  • Google introduces new 4K Plus add-on on YouTube TV

Google introduces new 4K Plus add-on on YouTube TV

If you think YouTube TV’s price has gone haywire, you’re not wrong. Currently, the price for a YouTube TV subscription is $65 per month, although the service started at a $35 tier several years ago.

Apart from the price customers must pay to get access to their favorite channels, Google added all sorts of perks that aren’t included in the base package. The most recent one is the 4K Plus add-on that does exactly that: it lets you watch 4K content.

However, you’ll only be able to watch “select live and on-demand content” in 4K from several channels like Discovery, ESPN, FOX Sports, FX, Nat Geo, NBC Sports, and Tastemade. Not to mention that in order for this to work, you’ll need an additional gadget like a compatible 4K enabled TV and/or streaming device.

Besides being able to watch 4K content, the new add-on will let you download shows to watch offline. Also, you’ll get unlimited streams at home, whereas until now you would be limited to just three streams.

Obviously, the new add-on isn’t free, so if you want to watch 4K content, you’ll have to come up with $19.99 per month. The good news is the first month is available for free if you sign up now, and then a price of $10 per month for one year. This is only available for customers in the US who have an active YouTube TV subscription and subscribe to the 4K Plus add-on for the first time.

  • Disney+ will offer 4K video, four simultaneous streams and more for only $6.99 per month

Disney+ will offer 4K video, four simultaneous streams and more for only $6.99 per month

Disney+, the beloved entertainment company’s new streaming service, will launch on November 12th priced at $6.99 per month. During the D23 Expo held in Anaheim, the company revealed some additional information about the Netflix competitor. For example, instead of dropping a whole season of an original show at one time, Disney will release them on a weekly basis. And the House of Mouse will allow Disney+ subscribers to stream content to as many as four devices at the same time and will not charge extra for 4K video streams. Subscribers will also be able to create up to seven different user profiles.

Netflix, on the other hand, is known for releasing entire seasons of new shows at one time, encouraging the binge-watching crowd to watch a complete season of a show in one sitting. While it allows up to five profiles to be created, Netflix subscribers must pay more ($15.99 per month) for 4K resolution and to stream on four devices simultaneously. This is a strange position for Disney to be in, as many fans of its theme parks will attest to (a one-day ticket to one park is a princely $109). But there is plenty of competition for your subscription dollars and Disney+ needs to bring in some revenue before it can even think about matching Netflix in terms of cost.

“With less than three months until launch, Disney+ will soon entertain and inspire audiences of all ages for generations to come, and we’re excited to preview some of the amazing original content being created for the service exclusively from our world-class brands today at the D23 Expo. Storytelling is the cornerstone of The Walt Disney Company and we’re thrilled to unveil a new slate of original shows from the Star Wars and Marvel cinematic universes, along with popular television franchises set to return with all-new series streaming only on Disney+.”-Kevin Mayer, chairman, Direct-to-Consumer & International segment, Disney.

Disney+ will be a mixture of classic Disney movies and animation (don’t forget that Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox means that the service will include every episode of The Simpsons) and original shows. The company has access to quite a few popular titles that will be used to create new adventures of popular characters. As pointed out earlier this year in a report from Loup Ventures, how many times can someone watch The Lion King? More likely to drive growth for Disney+ will be new episodes using the same characters from popular Disney classic cartoon and live films.

Disney announced yesterday that new originals are in development for Disney+ including:

    • The Mandalorian-the first live-action episodic series based on Star Wars which will follow “the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.”
    • High School Musical: The Musical: The Series-based on the popular High School Musical movies, this show “follows a group of students as they countdown to opening night of their school’s first-ever production of High School Musical.”
    • Lady and the Tramp-A “retelling” of the 1955 animated cartoon, but with real animal stars and CGI.
    • Noelle-A holiday-themed movie starring Anna Kendrick and Billy Eichner.
    • Encore!-This series brings former high-school musical castmates together to recreate shows they performed many years ago.
    • The World According to Jeff Goldblum-Enough said.

Other shows announced include the return of Hilary Duff as Lizzie McGuire in a new series, Muppets Now which will reunite Kermit and Miss Piggy, and another live-action Star Wars show. The latter will focus on Obi-Wan Kenobi and will star Ewan McGregor.

  • DoCoMo trials 4K video streaming for cars over 5G

DoCoMo trials 4K video streaming for cars over 5G

NTT DoCoMo joined forces with Toyota, Ericsson and Intel on a trial of 5G technologies for automobiles, achieving data speeds of up to 1Gbps in a vehicle traveling at 30km/h.

The trial of 4K video communications was conducted along Tokyo’s Odaiba waterfront. It involved a moving vehicle mounted with an Intel GO 5G automotive platform terminal equipped with an on-board antenna head.

The trial environment was constructed by DoCoMo using multiple Ericsson base stations and the Cloud RAN platform. Live 4K video was streamed at data speeds of up to 1Gbps downlink and 600Mbps uplink.

Further trials will be conducted by the four companies to test the practicality of advanced services for 5G connected cars and other applications.

The technology will also be demonstrated at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo from November 9 to 11 as part of the DoCoMo R&D Open House 2017.

NTT DoCoMo parent company NTT Group and Toyota have meanwhile agreed to collaborate on the research and development of an ICT platform for 5G connected cars.

  • Huawei demos 5G-LTE dual connectivity for 4K VOD

Huawei demos 5G-LTE dual connectivity for 4K VOD

Huawei has conducted a live demonstration involving 5G and LTE dual connectivity for a 4K video-on-demand service, achieving single user peak throughput of 21.1Gbps.

At last week’s Global Mobile Broadband Forum, Huawei conducted a demonstration based on its CloudRAN architecture.

With the development of new high-bandwidth services such as AR/VR and 4K video streaming and cloud-based services, Huawei said 5G new radio technologies will need to be deployed in central hotspots first to deliver the required capacity.

LTE networks are meanwhile continuing to evolve with the introduction of new technologies including 3D Massive MIMO.

Combining 5G and 4G networks has the potential to help operators protect their existing investments while improving network capacity, spectrum efficiency and coverage in urban areas.

“It is of vital importance to guarantee end users with a ubiquitous high data rate experience in densely populated urban city areas with high buildings and complex roadways,” Huawei CMO of wireless network products Dr Yuefeng Zhou said.

“Recently, 3GPP standardization has made significant progress in 5G and LTE dual connectivity. We expect to strengthen our cooperation with industry partners on 5G innovations based on these real application scenarios.”

  • HDR key to offsetting profit erosion

HDR key to offsetting profit erosion

High dynamic range, also known as HDR, is a new category of 4K TVs that emerged in 2016. HDR TV shipments will reach more than 4 million units in 2016 and growth to more than 30 million units by 2020, according to research firm IHS Markit.

The market for HDR compatible TVs, defined as any sets compatible with basic HDR formats but using standard dynamic range displays, will be as much as four times larger. By 2020, IHS Markit expects that nearly all of the 112 million 4K TVs shipped worldwide will be compatible with HDR, but only 30 percent will have true HDR performance capabilities.

Worldwide demand for 4K TVs continues to grow even though total TV shipments will decline slightly in 2016. The lack of unit volume growth in the total market and continuous price erosion, especially for categories like 4K, is a concern for TV manufacturers and retailers. New display technologies like HDR hold promise for improving ASPs and profits, but only if the technology and its benefits are communicated well to consumers.

“As with many new technologies in the TV market, the ability to introduce them to consumers in a way that communicates the value is crucial to achieving lasting premiums and profits,” said Paul Gagnon, Director of TV sets research for IHS Technology.

“In the case of HDR, only some sets have enhanced display performance that can allow the consumer to see the benefit, while the rest will have little discernable difference to consumers, who may become confused about the value of HDR as a result,” said Gagnon.

Standard dynamic range, or SDR, TVs will shrink rapidly as a segment within the 4K TV market, but remain the only choice for HD and 1080p resolution TVs as HDR benefits are featured primarily with 4K content.

The 4K TV market is growing quickly from 55 million units in 2016 to more than 100M units by 2019, achieving 100 percent share of 50-inch and larger TV shipments by 2019. As with many new TV technologies like 4K, HDR is featured in larger screen sizes where the additional costs are supported by larger premiums. More than 80% of HDR TV shipments will come from 50-inch and larger screen sizes.
