Royal Enfield Recalls 7000 Bullet Motorcycles Over Faulty Brake Caliper Bolt

Chennai-based motorcycle maker Royal Enfield has announced a recall for 7000 units of the Bullet range of motorcycles. The recall affects the Royal Enfield Bullet and Electra 350 and 500 variants that were manufactured between March 20 and April 30 this year. The recall is related to an issue of a faulty brake caliper bolt that failed to meet the required torque quality to standards, according to Royal Enfield and the recall is a proactive measure given the importance of the part concerned.

Royal Enfield further stated that corrective actions will be carried out on the affected motorcycles under the recall. Customers will have check whether their bike falls under the affected vehicles and need to get in touch with their nearest company authorized service center. The corrective measures will be done by the service center free of cost.

The Royal Enfield Bullet series is one of the oldest motorcycles to be sold from the manufacturer and retains the retro element in today’s modern-classic era. The Bullet 500 draws power from the 499 cc single-cylinder engine tuned for 27 bhp and 41 Nm of peak torque, while the Bullet 350 uses the 346 cc single-cylinder engine with 19 bhp and 28 Nm of peak torque. Both units are paired with a 5-speed gearbox. Both bikes were updated with the now mandatory ABS safety tech earlier this year to keep up with the new norms. The company is also working on the BS6 versions of its motorcycles, which could see the Bullet series receiving a new powertrain next year.

Commenting on the introduction of new upgraded Vespa and Aprilia, Diego Graffi, Managing Director and CEO, Piaggio India said, “As a global brand, we are committed to the safety of our customers and delighted to comply with the changing safety norms from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This move will improve the overall safety and riding standards of the two-wheeler industry. • KTM 125 Duke Bookings Open In India

KTM 125 Duke Bookings Open In India

In a surprising move, KTM India is likely to introduce the 125 Duke in India by the end of the year in the country. KTM dealerships in Mumbai and Pune have confirmed to carandbike that they are accepting bookings for the new entry-level street-fighter at a token amount of ₹ 1000. While the launch date has not been officially announced yet, reports suggest the launch is likely to happen by December 2018. Deliveries will commence soon after the launch. This will be the updated KTM 125 Duke that was revealed at the end of 2016 and shares its styling with the KTM 250 Duke. The naked motorcycle will also be the most expensive 125 cc offering to go on sale in the country.

Power on the KTM 125 Duke will come from the 124.7 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine tuned for 15 bhp and 12 Nm of peak torque. The motor is paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The bike comes with USD forks up front and a monoshock suspension setup at the rear, while braking performance comes from a 300 mm front and 230 mm disc at the rear.

Internationally, the 125 Duke is offered with ABS as standard, which could be skipped on the India-spec model since it is not mandatory for motorcycles below 125 ccc. Moreover, the bike will get a price advantage with the absence of ABS. The bike is likely to get CBS (Combined Braking System) instead, which is a lot cheaper in comparison. The TFT screen that is offered on the KTM 390 Duke is also likely to be given a miss to keep costs in check.

It is to be noted that the KTM 125 Duke was always intended to be an export-only offering ever since KTM commenced operations in India. While the motorcycle benefits from the same cycle parts as its older siblings, it also emerges as a more expensive offering compared to other “premium” 125 cc motorcycles. In Europe, the 125 Duke is largely targeted at A1 license holders with the government restrictions in place, making it a good-looking, fun-to-ride 125 cc bike for young buyers.

In India, the 125 cc segment is seen largely as a commuter segment for anyone looking for more power without compromising on efficiency. The KTM 125 Duke clearly does not belong to that segment, but could just be a lucrative choice for those looking at a fun-to-ride urban runabout. In terms of competition, the 125 Duke will compete against the Yamaha YZF-R15 V3, Yamaha FZ 25, Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 and the likes. So, yes, prices are likely to be around ₹ 1.50 lakh (on-road), which will make it about ₹ 20,000-30,000 cheaper than the KTM 200 Duke.

  • ABS-CBN scales back MVNO ambitions

    ABS-CBN scales back MVNO ambitions

Philippine media group ABS-CBN has scaled back its MVNO business in response to a declining subscriber base.

The company has cut the annual fees it is paying network provider Globe Telecom in half as part of efforts to curb losses from its ABS-CBN Mobile operations.

ABS-CBN CFO Aldrin Cerrado told the publication that the company plans to continue its mobile operations but has scaled down its ambitions, and has not yet decided whether to renew its MVNO agreement with Globe after it expires in two years.

He said the company’s annual fee for using Globe’s network has been reduced from 400 million pesos ($8.6 million) per year to 200 million pesos.

The cuts came after the MVNO reported a 13% decline in subscriber base for the first six months of 2016 to 520,000.

In addition, ABS-CBN’s strategy had been based on luring customers via offering exclusive access to television content via its iWant TV app. But the company has since altered its model to open up access to iWant TV to Globe and rival mobile operator Smart.

  • Singapore banks warn of new malware targeting mobile banking users

Singapore banks warn of new malware targeting mobile banking users

The Association of Banks in Singapore on Tuesday (1 December) warned consumers of a new malware that has been targeting mobile banking customers using Android smartphones.

In a press briefing, ABS director Ong-Ang Ai Boon said that since September “about 50” people have fallen victim to the malware, which poses as an Android software or WhatsApp application update and accesses users’ online banking accounts to make unauthorised purchases.

In the latter, a pop-up ad encourages consumers to tap it and download a “new” version of the program or risk losing access to the service. After downloading the “update”, the app will prompt the customer to input confidential information such as credit card details.

Current victims have lost up to a few thousand dollars from fraudulent online purchases made by cyber criminals, said Ong-Ang.

She disclosed that many of the purchases were made to overseas websites. A fraudulent purchase of budget airline tickets was made in one case.

Investigation into these scams is still ongoing by the banks affected and the police, she added.

“The weakest link is the consumer, if they are not careful. You must be vigilant. Don’t download unauthorized apps, don’t go to illegitimate sites and don’t simply click on any URL which you are not aware of. Because once you do that, you compromise your handphone,” Ong-Ang noted.

ABS advised consumers to take the following precautions: secure your smartphone with a password, install system updates to get the latest security features, install applications from trusted sources such as “Google Play”, only click on hyperllinks from messages and emails from a trusted source, and visit your bank’s website for more information.

According to the banking association, major retail banks in Singapore have seen an increase of mobile banking customers from 1.5 million in 2013 to 2.4 million in 2015.
