    AI solutions help reduce traffic accidents

    VinAI’s Driver Technology Software provides drivers with a 360-degree view of all surroundings, including blind spots, to help avoid traffic accidents.

    At the recent 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas (U.S.), VinAI showcased two smart driving features – Automatic Mirror Adjustment (AMA) and Jelly View, a 360-degree view mode. AMA is the world’s first auto mirror adjustment feature, according to a VinAI announcement.

    These are the two newest features of the Driver and Occupants Monitoring System (DMS/OMS) and Advanced Surround View Monitoring (SVM). Both are in-vehicle solution suites that apply AI to reduce traffic accidents and improve the driving experience.

    VinAI applies infrared cameras, vehicle sensors, and facial expression analysis technology (ranked 6th in the world), which detect the driver’s condition, such as drowsiness or fatigue, and also monitors for risky behaviors, including being distracted or using a phone. As soon as the system detects such issues, the DMS issues different levels of warnings throughout the journey, even when the driver is wearing sunglasses or a mask.DMS is compatible with various hardware platforms, enabling carmakers to easily integrate it into their existing systems without spending too much on transformation.

    The Automatic Mirror Adjustment (AMA) is also an outstanding feature, easily activated with just the touch of a button. AMA can automatically adjust the mirrors on both sides of the car to the perfect position, thanks to the driver’s eye position analysis.

    The system works by estimating the driver’s eye position three-dimensionally. Normally, this problem would require two or more cameras to solve, but VinAI’s advanced system can accurately predict eye position with a single infrared camera.

    The VinAI enhanced 360-degree panoramic view feature (ASVM) helps the driver keep a close eye on the outside world while driving. The driver can also adjust the view using the on-screen control panel by choosing Jelly View mode, a transparent wraparound view. With the support of Jelly View, the driver can observe the entire space surrounding the vehicle: the front, rear, behind and outside, from the trunk to the chassis.

    The system uses AI technology to collect images from four fisheye cameras as well as information from the accelerometer to construct the vehicle’s chassis view in real-time. This helps drivers observe blind spots through the rearview mirrors. From there, users can easily detect obstacles and avoid unexpected accidents on narrow roads, rough roads, or in parking lots.

    The SVM system won the VnExpress Innovation Awards 2022 and is currently being deployed in the VFe34 electric car in Vietnam. The Jelly View feature was first introduced to the public at CES 2023.

    Dr. Bui Hai Hung, General Director of VinAI Artificial Intelligence Research and Application Joint Stock Company, said the new AMA and Jelly View features had received positive reviews from professionals as well as consumers at CES 2023.

    These AI solutions can significantly reduce accidents, which are a big issue not just for Vietnam, but also for the world, including developed countries. This “life-saving” technology is highly applicable.

    VinAI has also developed various AI products in many other fields including smart cities. One such solution includes Smart Edge, an access control solution that uses facial recognition technology. Smart Edge is currently deployed to more than 50,000 people at Vinpearl resorts, Vinhomes Ocean Park, Vinhomes Smart City, and Vinhomes Grand Park. The feature has proven to be over 99% accurate.

    Just three years since its establishment, VinAI has registered 66 patents in Vietnam and the U.S. and has published 107 research papers at the world’s leading AI conferences.

    The Delhi Traffic Police released data of accidents in the capital city in 2018 and it shows that the fatalities in road accidents have gone up from 1584 deaths in 2017 to 1690 deaths in 2018. The report states that in 2018, 6515 road accidents occurred in Delhi in which 6086 people were injured while 1690 people lost their life.

    The fatality rate has increased by 6.69 percent though there has been a total decline in road accidents by 2.36 percent. Pedestrians were the most vulnerable victims. In 2018, 45.86 percent of the total persons killed in road accidents were pedestrians while scooter or motorcycle riders were second-most vulnerable with 33.72 percent killed in an accident.

    The fatalities have been showing a downward trend since 2009 but last year this trend reversed. The data also suggested that vehicles registered in Haryana were responsible for the highest number of fatal accidents in Delhi among other state vehicles. Out of the total 1657 fatal accidents, 150 were caused by vehicles registered in Haryana in 2018. The report also suggests that 743 accidents occurred during the day while 914 occurred during the night. The Traffic Department also identified 110 cluster points as accident-prone zones in Delhi and among the most dangerous stretches are on the Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, GTK Road, Rohtak Road and Grand Trunk Road.

    In 2018, cars/taxis caused 253 fatal accidents accounting for 15.26 percent of total fatal accidents which was the maximum number for a vehicle type.

    Car accidents are an unfortunate part of our everyday lives, whether you live in a large metropolis or small town. People are almost always the cause of these accidents; and unfortunately, accidents can result in significant injuries and even worse, fatalities. Your life is not the one at stake when driving, so be sure to use good judgment, follow the laws of the road, and be cautious. 

    Of course, just because you are a safe driver, or think that you are, does not mean that all the other drivers are. The ignorance and errors of other drivers should not fall upon your shoulders. The leading causes of car accidents are listed below and what you should when in these situations. 

    Distracted Driving: 

    More now than ever, are more drivers unfocused on the road. No longer is eating, applying makeup, reading or other crazy things drivers do that can cause an accident, but most accidents happen because of the phone. Currently, nearly every state or city has laws that apply to people driving with their phones and for an excellent reason. Jeffrey Preszler from www.preszlerlaw.com says that as of 2018, the number one leading cause of traffic accidents in Canada was distracted driving due to using a cell phone or other handheld electronic device. When you are driving, let that be it, and put the phone away; it may sound like common sense, but people still find ways to do something other than driving. Distracted driving is now the primary cause of all car accidents. 

    Drunk Driving: 

    Drinking and driving has been around for ages, yet for some reason, people are still doing it. There are other options such as rideshare or a classic taxi. Do not let someone drink and drive; if they have no other choice, let them sober up or have someone take them home. There is never an excuse to drink and get behind the wheel or watch someone do it. 

    Irresponsible Driving: 

    The irresponsibility of some drivers can shock a lot of people. Speeding, tailgating, changing multiple lanes and aggressiveness are just a few of the ways that plenty of preventable accidents can happen. Even if you are running late or the car in front of you is going way to slow, calm down, and realize that it is not just you that is driving. Others can feel the impatience or frustration of another driver on the road. 

    Lawlessness: 

    Running red lights, improper turns, lack of a turn signal, we all have been behind those drivers. They have almost caused you or someone else you know an accident because they either did not pay attention to the signs or they did not care. Look for all the traffic signs and any other visuals that will help you be a more conscientious driver. If you know the rules of the road and follow them, it will be more beneficial to you and other drivers. 

    Weather: 

    Other people are not only out of our control, but the weather is too. If it is raining, snowing or there are storms, try to stay off the road if at all possible. Severe weather causes many accidents and only because of a slick road. If you are in the car during a storm and you have a chance to pull over to wait it out, do that first. Otherwise, drive with extreme caution, paying close attention to your driving and other vehicles. 

    Construction and Roads: 

    The roads need to be maintained, so that means there is always construction going on, especially if you live in the bigger cities. Make sure you slow down since you would not want to hurt one of the workers. Also, as tempting as it is to swerve from the potholes or bumps in the road, you cannot do that with oncoming traffic or someone next to your lane. Slow down and watch for people and the state of the road to avoid an accident. 

    When you head for the car and get behind the wheel of your car, think for a moment that you have the luxury of being able to do it. Now think of all the other people that you will come into contact with on the road since you must share it with others and realize they have families and loved ones too. Getting distracted behind the wheel is not worth what could happen to you or others.

    KDDI, Toyota develop app to reduce road accidents

    Toyota Motor, Komeda and KDDI in September have jointly developed a smartphone application called Driving Barista, aimed at reducing the number of traffic accidents in Aichi Prefecture caused by drivers using their smartphones while driving.

    This is the first traffic safety initiative in Japan involving a smartphone application, which is to be carried out and jointly promoted by an automobile company, a communication company, and a food and beverage company.

    For thirteen consecutive years, Aichi Prefecture has had the highest rate of traffic fatalities in Japan. Furthermore, there were also 50,101 arrests involving the use of smartphones while driving, and the increase in violations of this nature has also intensified the problem.

    Toyota, Komeda, and KDDI will promote traffic safety in Aichi Prefecture through an educational initiative where participation is accessible for all, and can lead to a reduction in traffic accidents.

    The Driving Barista application can only be used within Aichi Prefecture. By using the gyro sensor to sense the tilt of the smartphone body, and the GPS to determine the distance driven, this application measures the distance the driver has driven while leaving the smartphone face down. When the cumulative distance reaches 100 km, the driver can receive a coupon for a cup of blended or iced coffee at a Komeda Coffee Shop.

    According to one survey, approximately 60% of respondents said they use their smartphones while driving, with approximately half of these respondents keeping only one hand on the steering wheel. Therefore, the companies hope that the new application will raise drivers’ awareness about not using smartphones while driving.

    “We have already been carrying out educational activities to prevent the use of smartphones while driving, and we hope that this initiative between the three companies will help solve the problem facing Aichi prefecture,” said Akira Dobashi, director in charge of CSR and environment at KDDI.

    “We developed the Driving Barista smartphone application as a fun way to help prevent traffic accidents,” said Dobashi. “We hope to contribute to accident prevention by providing a new experience for drivers.”
