  • Meta took down more than 7,000 fake accounts related to pro-China propaganda

Meta took down more than 7,000 fake accounts related to pro-China propaganda

Fake accounts on social media aren’t something new. Most likely, many of us have come across at least one fake account during our time on social media. Facebook reportedly holds the largest number of fake accounts compared to any other social network in the world. However, it appears that Meta has managed to eliminate at least some of them.

Meta shared details about a network of fake accounts that had spread pro-China propaganda on Facebook. The company mentions that the takedowns were tied to “individuals associated with Chinese law enforcement” who also ran similar fake accounts on other platforms.

The company often shares updates about taking down fake accounts that are up to no good, but what Meta’s security researchers found this time is pretty big. Meta got rid of 7,704 Facebook accounts, 954 Pages, 15 Groups, and 15 Instagram accounts, making it one of the largest networks of fake accounts ever discovered by the company.

Meta found several groups of fake accounts from various parts of China. The way the groups acted, made it seem like they might have been working together from a shared place, maybe an office. Each group had a specific schedule, being most active in the morning and afternoon. They took breaks for lunch and dinner and then had another burst of activity in the evening, so basically, they had a full-time job.

Ben Nimmo, who’s in charge of global threat intelligence at Meta, calls this move “the most prolific covert influence operation that we know of in the world today.” He also points out that the people running these accounts were also busy on X, Reddit, YouTube, TikTok, and Pinterest.

As per Meta, the fake accounts aimed to share pro-China messages, including positive commentary about China, criticisms of the US, and Western foreign policies. The company did verify that it discovered proof connecting these fake accounts to an earlier pro-China operation cleverly called Spamouflage that showed up in 2019.

In addition, the company also shared that it stopped numerous malicious domains and efforts to create fake accounts and Pages linked to the Russian Doppelganger operation, which aims to mimic official news and government websites to spread false articles undermining support for Ukraine. This operation has broadened its scope from France, Germany, and Ukraine to the US and Israel.

  • Google Accounts receives a major security feature today

Google Accounts receives a major security feature today

Google Accounts already have a few layers of security features meant to protect accounts from multiple types of online attacks. Today, the search giant launched a brand-new security feature, which seems to be the most powerful ever supported by Google Accounts: passkeys.

Passkeys aren’t just an almost foolproof protection method for those using Google Accounts, but a very convenient way to sign in. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, passkeys have been around for a while, representing an alternative to passwords. Passkeys are used to sign in to apps and websites and are not just much easier to use than passwords, but also more secure.

Basically, passkeys work the same way as many of the unlocking options that we now have available on just about every smartphone: fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock PIN. Instead of using a password, passkeys allow you to sign in to apps and websites using any of the methods mentioned.

As you can imagine, passkeys are safer than passwords because they’re resistant to online attacks, including phishing. They’re even more secure than SMS one-time codes.

Google announced that it’s now rolling out support for passkeys across Google Accounts on all major platforms, including Android and iOS. These will not replace current sign in options, but they will be available as an additional option that users can take advantage of.

Passkeys aren’t enabled by default, so you’ll have to set them up via your Google Account settings. As far as Google Workspace accounts go, administrators will soon have the option to enable passkeys for their end-users during sign-in for, the company confirmed earlier today.

The passwordless sign-in experience is certainly something more convenient and more secure than anything Google Accounts offer currently. Considering that most smartphones these days come with a fingerprint sensor or face unlock support, just about anyone will be able to use the new security feature.

  • Google will enable two-step verification by default on 150 million accounts before year’s end

Google will enable two-step verification by default on 150 million accounts before year’s end

We are now in Cybersecurity Awareness Month as Google points out in a new blog post, and as the search giant says, “For most of us, passwords are the first line of defense for our digital lives. However, managing a set of strong passwords isn’t always convenient, which leads many people to look for shortcuts (i.e. dog’s name + birthday) or to neglect password best practices altogether, which opens them up to online risks. At Google, we protect our users with products that are secure by default – it’s how we keep more people safe online than anyone else in the world.”
One of the best things that a smartphone user can use to protect his privacy is two-factor authentication (2FA), or as Google calls it, two-step verification (2SV). This adds another layer of security when logging in to an app. With 2FA/2SV, when entering the password to open an app you will receive a text message on your personal device with a unique one-time code that you type in to verify your identity and open the app.

As Google points out in the blog, adding that additional layer of authentication sharply reduces the chances that a hacker can break into an account. Google says that two-step verification is “one of the most reliable ways to prevent unauthorized access to accounts and networks.” It combines something you know, such as a password, with something you have such as your phone or a security key.

Google has made signing in using 2SV as seamless as possible by offering a prompt that requires a single tap to prove that you are who you say you are. Google states that the best way to keep its users safe is to turn on its security protections by default. As a result, it has started to automatically make its users’ accounts more secure and before the end of this year, it will auto-enroll an additional 150 million Google users in 2SV while requiring 2 million YouTube creators to enable 2SV.

The Alphabet subsidiary admits that 2SV is not for everyone and it is working on developing technology that reduces the reliance on passwords in the long term. At the same time, the company is always seeking to improve the experience of having your identity authenticated. At this moment, Google is auto-enrolling accounts that have the “proper backup mechanisms in place to make a seamless transition to 2SV.”

Back in 2018, Google said that only 10% of its accounts were using 2FA or 2SV. By the end of this year, that percentage will be much higher. And Google is also partnering with certain organizations to hand out over 10,000 security keys to high-risk users. Google has baked the capabilities of security keys directly into Android and offers iPhone users its Google Smart Lock app.

Google says that every day it checks the security of 1 billion passwords to make sure that accounts are not getting hacked. This is done using the built-in password manager on Chrome, Android, and the Google app. The password manager is also available on iOS. With iOS, Chrome can autofill saved passwords when logging in to other apps thus allowing iOS users to use just one single tap to log in on a site (instead of having to remember and type in a password).

Soon, iOS users will be able to use Chrome’s password generator on any iOS app in the same manner that Android users employ Autofill with Google. Also being rolled out is a feature that will allow users to access all of the passwords saved in the password manager from the menu of the Google app.

If you want to turn on 2SV or 2FA on your Android device and turn on the built-in security key, you must have a phone running Android 7 or higher. From the browser of your Android phone go to myaccount.google.com/security. Under the heading of Signing into Google select two-step verification. Scroll to Set up an alternative second step and tap Add security key. Select your Android phone and then Add. A confirmation that your phone was added as a security key will be sent.

To turn on two-factor authentication on iOS, follow these steps:

    Open Settings on your iPhone.
Tap the Apple ID banner at the top of the display.
    Tap Password & Security.
    Tap Turn On Two-Factor Authentication.
    Tap Continue.
    Tap Continue.
    Enter your iPhone’s passcode.
    Tap Done.

  • Crypto-Linked Spending on Cards Tops $1 Billion

Crypto-Linked Spending on Cards Tops $1 Billion

Crypto-linked spending on Visa cards topped $1 billion despite continued doubts about cryptocurrencies as a means of payment.

Credit card giant Visa achieved the feat in just the first half of 2021, according to a statement, underlining more steps to make crypto transactions smoother.

The firm said it was seeking to partner with 50 crypto platforms to improve ease of conversion and spending in digital currencies across 70 million merchants worldwide.

Despite continued regulatory pressures, crypto adoption continues to rise across the financial sector with global banks like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Standard Chartered and DBS launching various related offerings.

  • China Bans Crypto-Linked Social Media Accounts

China Bans Crypto-Linked Social Media Accounts

China’s crypto crackdown continues to ramp up as it banned several influential social media accounts focused on crypto-related content over the weekend.

At least a dozen popular Weibo accounts featuring content about cryptocurrencies have been suspended or shut down over claimed violation of the Chinese social media platform’s relevant laws and regulations.

This follows the announcement by Chinese authorities last month to intensify their crackdown on Bitcoin mining and trading behavior.

The latest social media crackdown is not a first for China which made previously similar moves to ban influential crypto-related accounts.

In 2019, Weibo banned the social media accounts of Binance co-founder Yi He and Tron founder Justin Sun.

  • Weibo Closes Social Media Accounts for Investment Fraud

Weibo Closes Social Media Accounts for Investment Fraud

Chinese tech giants are stepping up their own content-filtering efforts with Weibo leading the pack by shutting down 37 accounts for investment-related fraud.

According to a statement by Weibo owner Sina, the accounts were closed due to content issues regarding «misleading investment information» or «securities fraud».

The accounts seduce customers into purchasing illegal wealth management products and commit fraud by posting fake investment information, the statement said. Weibo will continue to crackdown on the illegal accounts and also welcomes users to report if any misleading information is found.

Chinese regulators have been pushing social media platforms to self-censor content with a focus on combating illegal or misleading information such as investment-related fraud.

In September, WeChat issued a statement claiming it had suspended or closed 45,000 accounts year-to-date for similar issues. The firm claimed that more than 36 percent of closed accounts involved fraudulent content and 25 percent involved false claims of high investment returns.
