  • Apple could get AirPods Pro 2 made in Vietnam

Apple could get AirPods Pro 2 made in Vietnam

Apple could make its wireless earphone, AirPods Pro 2, in Vietnam this year as it seeks to expand production outside China amid strict Covid-19 policies there, according to reports.

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted Tuesday that the new AirPods would be mass produced in Vietnam from the second half of this year.

“The shift in AirPods Pro 2 production can be attributed to the relatively uncomplicated supply chain and Vietnam’s better production environment (such as infrastructure and workforce) vs. most countries outside China.”

But he said that since the product introduction process of the device is still on in China, it is not easy to establish a complete non-China production site.

Apple has told some of its contract manufacturers that it wants to boost production outside China, citing Beijing’s strict anti-Covid policy among other reasons, the Wall Street Journal reported last week.

India and Vietnam, already sites for a small portion of Apple’s global production, are among the countries getting a closer look from the company as alternatives to China, it said, citing people involved in the discussions.

Apple had been seeking to diversify away from China before Covid-19 broke out in early 2020, but the plans were complicated by the pandemic, the report said.

Current lockdowns in Shanghai and other cities as part of China’s anti-Covid policy have caused supply-chain bottlenecks for many western companies, it added.

  • Apple’s AirPods held sway over all competitors in the TWS Bluetooth Headset market

Apple’s AirPods held sway over all competitors in the TWS Bluetooth Headset market

According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Apple’s AirPods dominated the market for True Wireless Stereo (TWS) Bluetooth headsets in 2020. Overall, the accessory remains one of the hottest products in tech as the category saw sales soar 90% last year. Even after last year’s growth, there is room for more.

Ville-Petteri Ukonaho, Strategy Analytics’ Associate Director, notes that globally, only one in 10 people own a Bluetooth headset. Ukonaho says that with companies like Apple and Samsung no longer including wired earphones in the box with new handsets, Strategy Analytics sees “huge potential” for Bluetooth headset sales.

Ken Hyers, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “TWS headsets drove global sales volumes in the Bluetooth headset segment. While the pandemic slowed demand briefly during the first half of the year, sales rebounded strongly during the second half. The Work From Home shift benefited the entire Bluetooth headset category in terms of sales volume growth.”

Hyers also touched on Apple’s current domination of the TWS Bluetooth headset market while also pointing out that the tech giant’s share is shrinking thanks to competition this year from Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi. Hyers said, “Apple maintained a commanding lead in the TWS segment in 2020, but its commanding share is shrinking as competition intensifies. Strong competition is expected from Xiaomi, Samsung, and Huawei in 2021. The TWS headset market is already hugely overcrowded and despite a strong sales outlook, there will inevitably be consolidation in the years ahead.”

Apple is expected to unveil two new AirPods versions this year, the third-generation AirPods and the second generation AirPods Pro. The new models could see the light of day this March. The first generation AirPods were released on December 13th, 2016 with the second-generation model launched last March. On October 30th, 2019, the AirPods Pro hit the market with new features including Active Noise Cancellation to remove ambient noise, and the Transparency mode to allow outside noises to be heard.

  • Apple report details iPhone Pro, AirPods 3, iPad upgrades, much more

Apple report details iPhone Pro, AirPods 3, iPad upgrades, much more

Apple is readying an onslaught of hardware products that’ll be announced over the next few months. The first of these will seemingly arrive in less than three weeks and today a new report by Bloomberg has detailed the company’s plans.

According to people familiar with the situation, Apple is preparing to announce three new iPhone models at an event next month. The lineup will reportedly include two ‘Pro’ models that’ll succeed last year’s iPhone XS series and a cheaper iPhone XR replacement which could be branded as ‘iPhone 11’ or simply ‘iPhone.’

This year’s premium models, as previous reports have indicated, will include a triple-camera system on the back that consists of a primary sensor, a telephoto camera, and an ultra-wide-angle alternative which grants access to a 120º field of view. The setup will capture three images simultaneously before stitching them together with the help of artificial intelligence to create a better photo that doesn’t cut out any important details.

Apple’s next-gen photographic system will take higher resolution pictures that can rival “some traditional cameras.” Improvements in “very low-light environments” are to be expected too in addition to drastically upgraded video recording capabilities. According to sources, the Cupertino-based company has developed a feature that allows video to be retouched while being recorded. Users should also be able to apply effects, alter colors, reframe, and crop.

The non-Pro iPhone 11 won’t be receiving a third wide-angle camera like its premium siblings but it should still inherit some important upgrades. Specifically, the smartphone’s expected to include a dual-camera system that’ll boast a 2x telephoto zoom camera and ultimately support an enhanced portrait mode.

All 2019 iPhones are set to include Apple’s yet-to-be-announced A13 processor paired with a new co-processor chip known internally as “matrix” or “AMX.” This will handle certain math-heavy tasks and may result in an improved augmented reality experienced. Speaking of which, Apple is readying new 3D cameras for its 2020 iPhone series that’ll take this to the next level.

Almost one year after Huawei first introduced the feature and around six months after Samsung announced its alternative, Apple has reportedly created its own reverse wireless charging system that’ll be present on this year’s ‘Pro’ models. The feature will let users power-up their AirPods by placing them on the iPhone’s rear. It should also work with the Apple Watch and other Qi-ready products.

This year’s premium models will be identical from the front to the iPhone XS and XS Max that they replace but some important changes have apparently been made. According to today’s report, a new multi-angle Face ID system that works even when the devices are flat on a table will be present. Additionally, Apple has reportedly enhanced water resistance dramatically. So much so that users should be able to submerge the new iPhones for far longer than 30 minutes.

Other changes will reportedly include a new “shatter-resistance” technology and a matte finish on the rear with some colors. Also worth pointing out is the presence of updated OLED displays which will ditch the 3D Touch system in favor of more advanced Haptic Touch.

Corroborating previous information, Bloomberg believes Apple will announce a new 10.2-inch entry-level iPad that’ll replace the existing 9.7-inch model. Exact details are yet to be revealed but a reduction in the thickness of bezels is to be expected alongside significant internal upgrades and potentially a dual-camera system on the rear.

In addition to this, the California-based company is reportedly preparing some upgrades to its iPad Pro series. The devices will look identical to the existing models from the front but should boast an iPhone Pro-like triple-camera system on the rear. Additionally, internal upgrades that’ll likely involve the addition of Apple’s A13X chip are to be expected.

The Apple Watch has been upgraded on an annual basis for several years now and 2019 looks set to be no different. But after introducing some rather drastic changes twelve months ago, it seems the company is preparing only minimal changes for this year’s update.

Bloomberg says Apple will be focusing primarily on the added features that watchOS 6 introduces and some new case finishes which should include ceramic and titanium model. Some internal upgrades are possible but concrete info is yet to emerge.

While on the topic of wearables, it seems a pair of premium AirPods is currently in the works. The version will be more expensive than the current $159 pair but should include new features such as water resistance and noise cancellation. Apple was initially planning a launch alongside this year’s iPhones but the introduction has now been pushed back until next year.

Completing Apple’s lineup of products is HomePod. The original continues to sell pretty poorly across the globe due to its high $300 price and it seems the company is planning to address this issue with a cheaper model that’ll have just two tweeters instead of the current model’s seven.

  • Apple’s AirPods 2 will help the ‘hearables’ segment to grow

Apple’s AirPods 2 will help the ‘hearables’ segment to grow

According to Counterpoint Research, wireless ‘hearables’ are the next big thing. The segment, which contains Apple’s AirPods and the Samsung Galaxy Buds, saw global sales of around 46 million units last year. But with the help of AirPods 2, this could catapult to 129 million units as early as next year.

Samsung, Google, Bose, and LG are all expected to grow

As noted by Research Director Pete Richardson, “2019 will be the year that hearables evolve into an important market.” For the most part, new releases from major brands will boost sales across the globe. However, the evolving digital habits of consumers are also expected to propel demand.

The likes of Samsung, Bose, Huawei, and LG all hold relatively small market shares at the moment. But as interest in the segment picks up throughout this year and next, each one is set to experience relatively strong growth which should translate into larger market shares.

New Google Pixel Buds and other releases from the likes of Amazon are expected to play an important role too. After all, these should integrate the likes of Google Assistant and Alexa, both of which are becoming increasingly popular among consumers.

AirPods 2 will propel the ‘hearables’ segment to new levels

As mentioned in the opening paragraph, for the foreseeable future Apple is expected to remain the biggest driving force of growth. Rumor has it that the brand is preparing a second-generation of its AirPods which should integrate a variety of new features and potentially some small design changes.

From afar, AirPods 2 are expected to look identical to the originals. But upon closer inspection, a new frosted glass-like coating should be visible. This, according to rumors, will improve grip and reduce the slipperiness, which means the new AirPods shouldn’t fall out of your ears so easily.

AirPods 2 should also introduce always-on Siri, which will allow users to activate the assistant with the words “Hey, Siri.” This feature was actually first teased way back in September by Apple but still hasn’t been confirmed officially.

Joining the improved Siri will apparently be some kind of water resistance and potentially some health-related features. More specifically, an earlier report suggested Apple was researching the possibility of a built-in heart rate monitor. However, this extra is far from guaranteed. One feature that does seem extremely likely at this point is support for wireless charging through a new charging case. Allegedly, this feature, which will charge both the case and AirPods simultaneously, will take the battery level from 0% to 100% in just 15 minutes.

Also expected from the new wireless accessory is Apple’s W2 Bluetooth connectivity chip. This can currently be found inside the Apple Watch Series 4 and halves the power consumption with respect to the W1 chip. As a result, battery life improvements are to be expected.

Of course, Apple’s AirPods are primarily meant for music and Apple is set to bring some improvements to the overall sound quality.

Most AirPods buyers aren’t bothered about sound quality

Rather ironically, despite the fact AirPods are meant for music, consumers aren’t buying them because of their sound quality. Counterpoint Research recently conducted an online survey of over 200 people regarding their preferences. In the case of AirPods, 68% of correspondents cited “comfort & fit” as a key reason for buying them. This was followed by “ease of use” and “portability,” which were mentioned by 56% and 44% of people respectively.

As it turns out, just 41% of the people surveyed cited “sound quality” as a reason for buying AirPods. For comparison, this factor was the key driver when it came to Bose products, with a whopping 72% listing it. “Noise cancellation” was also important with Bose headphones as it was cited by 68% of people.
