Philippines retailer The Villar Group plans to open more compact versions of its Allhome DIY and building-supplies stores.

The move is a bid to position outlets within closer range of shoppers reluctant to travel far from home during the coronavirus pandemic. The new “Quick Fix” stores will stock DIY and a broad range of homeware.

“With the lockdown easing out and when the economic situation improves, AllHome may see itself opening more new stores, given its capability to fast track fit-out construction,” AllHome VC Camille Villar said.

The new outlets are likely to be located next to The Villar Group’s AllDay convenience stores to take advantage of the firm’s property opportunities.

The building-supplies chain operates 45 stores throughout the Philippines, roughly half of which were opened last year as part of an aggressive expansion strategy.

Philippine home-store chain AllHome will expand its store network to push its selling space beyond 450,000sqm this year.

“We are set to bring AllHome to more locations in 2020,” said the firm’s chairman Manuel Villar Jr. “Our expansion program is both sustainable and strategic by taking advantage of the synergies between our real estate companies, such as Vista Land, as well as the opportunities in the home improvement industry in the Philippines.”

As of last year, the firm’s total selling area covered 313,000sqm.

In part as a response to the coronavirus outbreak, the firm has moved to secure its inventory sufficiently enough to cover its planned expansion and existing network for several months. China is one of AllHome’s major inventory sources.

“We can easily shift to our other existing sources, like Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, India, and even the US,” said AllHome president Benjamarie Therese Serrano. “Our fresh funds indeed came in at the right time when it comes to our inventory management.”

AllHome’s net income grew 225 per cent in the first three quarters last year. Its total revenues increased by 72 per cent to PHP8.2 billion (US$162 million).

AllHome Corp, the Philippines home-furnishings retailer, is looking to raise up to US$348 million in an IPO.

AllHome operates 25 large one-stop homewares and home-improvement stores, most of them in the nation’s capital city, Manila. The partial float would value the company at between $827 million and $1 billion, according to Reuters.

The shares will be listed on the stock exchange on October 10.

Robert Ramos, senior VP and trust officer at Eastwest Bank said that AllHome has a market advantage of already being entrenched in the category.

The company is likely to face competition when Ikea makes its debut in the Philippines in the Mall of Asia next year.
