GS Retail recruits local residents to deliver products

South Korean convenience-store operator GS Retail plans to hire local residents with ample knowledge about their neighborhoods to speed delivery of products in areas where alleyways and addresses may prove confusing.

GS Retail, which runs the convenience-store chain GS25, will begin testing its new ‘Neighborhood Delivery’ service, which is open to all applicants without limits to time and task.

Each person will be delivering products within a 1.5km radius of their current location. The products, too, will weigh less than 5kg, allowing retirees, homemakers, and after-work office workers to work without difficulty.

If a customer orders a product from a nearby GS25 convenience store through the Yogiyo app, the delivery person can respond to an incoming delivery call to bring the product to the customer.

Each delivery will pay US$2.35-$2.68 in commissions.

GS Retail plans to test the new delivery program at three convenience stores in Seoul’s Gangnam District starting Monday. On August 17, the program will be expanded to cover all GS25 stores throughout Seoul.

The company aims to infiltrate the $17 billion delivery market with ‘Neighborhood Delivery’, a short-distance quick-commerce platform based on 15,000 brick-and-mortar stores.

  • WhatsApp upcoming feature lets you use the same account on multiple devices

WhatsApp upcoming feature lets you use the same account on multiple devices

WhatsApp is testing new features all the time and we often learn about them before release. One of the important features that we hope to see coming to WhatsApp is the option to use the same account on multiple devices.

A new report coming from WABetaInfo confirms WhatsApp is now testing this new feature that allows users to have the same WhatsApp account on up to four devices. In that regard, a new UI that will manage all linked devices is now in the works at WhatsApp.

The new UI is meant to enable users to add new devices to their WhatsApp account or remove them if they need to. To add new devices to your WhatsApp account, you must use a code that will sent to you via SMS or WhatsApp Chat. The procedure hasn’t been finalized since the feature is still in the works, but it’s probably the easiest and most secure way at the moment.

The new option to add multiple devices on the same WhatsApp account is not yet available in any of the beta versions of the app, but the new Linked Devices UI does show up in one of the beta iterations.

  • OCBC Bank is first in Singapore to enable use of SingPass

OCBC Bank is first in Singapore to enable use of SingPass

Since 4 July 2020, OCBC Bank’s 1.8 million digital customers in Singapore have been able to use the SingPass Mobile app as an alternative login to access the full suite of digital banking services via the OCBC Mobile Banking app or Internet banking.

Using SingPass Mobile as an alternate login will especially benefit customers who currently use an access code and PIN instead of fingerprint or facial biometrics to log in to OCBC Bank’s digital banking platforms. The need to remember multiple access codes and PINs is eliminated while enabling customers to securely access digital banking services. This market-leading service has been enabled for OCBC Bank customers by integrating digital banking access with Singapore’s National Digital Identity (NDI) platform.

SingPass Mobile login will further accelerate digital banking adoption

Since the Covid-19 outbreak in Singapore, digital transactions among OCBC Bank customers have surged as the pandemic accelerated digital adoption.

Close to 100,000 ‘digital debutantes’ have started using digital banking for the first time this year. There has been a 40% jump in digital transactions performed by those aged 50 to 64, while those above 64 years old clocked a 48% increase in digital banking transactions from last year.

Managed by the Government Technology Agency (GovTech), the SingPass Mobile app allows users to transact with over 60 government agencies online securely. More than 1.6 million Singapore residents today use the SingPass Mobile app to access government e-services including checking their Central Provident Fund (CPF) account balances, filing taxes and applying for public housing. Many now also use the app for SafeEntry logins at venues to facilitate contact tracing.

Mr Aditya Gupta, OCBC Bank’s Head of Digital Business for Singapore and Malaysia, said: “Inclusion and accessibility have been core to our digital transformation narrative. I believe that offering SingPass – a trusted and widely used mode of digital authentication in Singapore – as an alternate login, will give more of our customers the confidence and convenience to bank with us digitally. We have partnered with GovTech to pioneer the co-creation of a trust ecosystem for Singapore’s banking industry using the national digital identity platform, which will radically improve how our customers access and experience our digital services.”

Mr Kwok Quek Sin, Senior Director, National Digital Identity, GovTech, said: “OCBC Bank is known for many of its innovative efforts in leading digital transformation and has been one of the early adopters of our National Digital Identity strategic platform. This month, OCBC Bank has started to offer SingPass as an alternative login to access their digital banking services. We are happy to be able to support our Singapore companies in their exciting digitalization journeys. GovTech will continue to push out more products on the national digital identity platform to help businesses enhance digital service delivery, improve customer experience and bring about productivity gains.”

Mr Sopnendu Mohanty, Chief FinTech Officer, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), said: “The foundation of the digital economy is the seamless integration of public digital infrastructures with essential services. We are delighted that OCBC Bank has broken new ground by enabling access to financial services with SingPass Mobile. MAS has been working closely with the financial industry to foster the adoption of foundational digital infrastructures such as national digital identity for seamless integration with the growing digital economy. With the convergence of SingPass Mobile, MyInfo, and PayNow, customers can open bank accounts, access banking services and make payments online seamlessly yet safely.”

OCBC Bank at the forefront of leveraging National Digital Identity infrastructure for digital banking services

In June 2018, OCBC Bank became the first in Singapore to enable instant deposit account opening using MyInfo – the national data repository – integrated with the Bank’s proprietary real-time digital know-your-customer process (e-KYC).

A year later, in May 2019, OCBC extended the use of MyInfo and OCBC Bank’s e-KYC process to online applications for cards, personal loans and lines of credits. This was then extended to home loans and car loans in Feb 2020.

Within three months of launch, digital card applications grew 3.5 times, while online personal loan applications grew nine-fold. Three in 4 credit cards are acquired digitally, and 3 in 4 deposit accounts are opened digitally leveraging MyInfo. The integration of MyInfo in the digital product application process has enabled OCBC Bank to offer 60-second approvals for car loans, and 60-minute approvals for home loans. One in 3 home loans and 2 in 3 car loans have been approved and accepted via this process within four months of its launch.

  • Meitu lets retailers test online makeup service during Covid-19

Meitu lets retailers test online makeup service during Covid-19

Chinese imaging app Meitu has offered its AR online makeup trial system to global beauty enterprises and retailers for free to help them overcome difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The firm’s Beauty Industry Support Plan was extended from limited-time free use in specific regions to apply universally. The plan was rolled out as a three-month free trial service in the wake of the outbreak for 10,000 beauty enterprises and retailers, with a three-month extension given to existing users – including Givenchy, Shiseido, Clarins, Bausch + Lomb, DFS, and other partners.

The software, called the Cosmetic Promotion Assistant, is based on Meitu’s facial-recognition and image-processing technologies and is. The system can also recommend suitable colors and styles based on the user’s facial features. It generates a virtual makeup effect within one minute, and also supports sharing and purchase functions, with multiple payment methods allowed.

In providing free trials to potential customers, users of the service have seen increased sales of makeup products such as lip gloss, blush, eye shadow, and foundation.

Enterprises and their beauty assistants are able to configure makeup effects on their own branded websites, which can then be shared to social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Purchase links provided on the trial page can redirect users to the vendor’s official website, or marketplaces like Amazon or eBay.

  • Food, gaming and business app downloads soar during crisis

Food, gaming and business app downloads soar during crisis

App downloads have soared during the coronavirus crisis, with the business, food & beverage and gaming categories showing the highest growth.

SaaS company Adjust has published in its App Trends 2020 report, in which it compares app downloads data from the first quarter of this year with the same period in 2019.

Adjust says business app sessions have undergone a huge rise (an increase of 105 percent over last year), with app downloads surging 70 percent. Revenue events have risen 75 percent, as users select premium app versions to assist the transition to work from home.

With many restaurants forced to offer takeout-only meals, F&B apps also saw a major increase in sessions (up 73 percent on this time last year). Installs of these apps have gone up by 21 percent.

But the fastest-growing category for app downloads was Gaming, with a 132-per-cent increase during the last week of March alone. There was a 47-per-cent year-on-year increase in gaming sessions and a 75 percent increase in installs in the first quarter of this year compared to last year.

“Beyond these increases in installs and sessions, the report shows little evidence to suggest that there’s been a fundamental shift in user behavior post-install,” said Adjust co-founder and CTO Paul H. Muller.

“Users are still taking the same actions in-app, such as averaging a little above two sessions a day, to churning at predictable points in the customer journey.”

  • Dark Sky announces acquisition by Apple and discontinuation of Android support

Dark Sky announces acquisition by Apple and discontinuation of Android support

Popular weather app Dark Sky made a huge announcement, and the forecast for Android users doesn’t look good. The company revealed that it has been acquired by Apple, causing some major changes for users in the near future.

Dark Sky, which describes itself as a hyperlocal weather app, made its name on down-to-the-minute precipitation forecasts based on a number of sources, including crowdsourced data from users who opt-in. Receiving widespread acclaim, the app quickly amassed over 1 million Android users, establishing itself as a formidable force in the weather service market.

Following the acquisition by the iPhone maker, announced in a company blog post, Dark Sky reportedly won’t go through any major branding changes (no iDark Sky for now), but support for Android will be discontinued on July 1, 2020.

A complete drop of support for a large portion of users is kind of a big deal, especially for Android users like me, but the company also announced that all active subscribers will be given a refund at the date of discontinuation, which will also affect Wear OS and web clients of the service.

Given Dark Sky’s reputation as the best weather app around, it’s sad to see it go as far as the Play Store is concerned. But based on the app’s #1 status in the Weather category of the iOS App Store, Dark Sky will likely still enjoy much popularity on the other side of the fence.

  • WhatsApp might launch self-destructing messages feature for individual accounts

WhatsApp might launch self-destructing messages feature for individual accounts

We already know that WhatsApp has been working on a self-destructing message feature. What we don’t know is when it will be made available to everyone and in what form. The self-destructing messages feature is quite common in apps like Snapchat and Telegram, but WhatsApp doesn’t yet include the functionality.

However, we know that WhatsApp tested the feature since last October, but decided to limit it to groups chat. The good news is the latest version of WhatsApp beta reintroduces self-destruct messages for individual accounts.

Unfortunately, since it’s still in the beta, WhatsApp might change its mind again and either limit its availability to a certain group of users or not release it at all. Well, the important thing WhatsApp has reconsidered its strategy and plans to bring it to all users, not just to some of them.

Those of you who have access to WhatsApp beta for Android will find the new feature in the Settings menu of each chat. Make sure to tap Delete messages and choose how long new messages will last before they are deleted. You can select from several options: Off, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, and 1 year.

Microsoft’s Your Phone app possibly getting Drag and Drop

Microsoft’s Your Phone app has been growing in popularity over the past several years. The app offers a link between your Windows 10 PC and your Android smartphone (requires a phone with Android 7 or newer), providing useful features for managing your phone.

Recently, Microsoft added support for RCS messaging for selected Samsung smartphones. Now, a Tweet by Aggiornamenti Lumia suggests that a new feature may be coming soon: Drag And Drop from your PC to your smartphone.

We do not know whether the rumored Drag and Drop feature will be officially released or when, and whether it will be exclusive to selected Samsung devices.

Other features of the Your Phone app include reading and sending text messages from your PC, as well as managing your notifications and calls. The functionalities available only for select Samsung devices are Content Transfer (copy and paste between PC and Android phone) and Phone Screen, which allows you to interact with Android apps and phone content while visualizing your smartphone’s screen on your PC.

You can find whether your phone is supported on Microsoft’s Your Phone app help page which offers a list of supported phones for every referenced app function.

  • Facebook launches faster, cleaner Messenger app for iOS devices

Facebook launches faster, cleaner Messenger app for iOS devices

It will probably take a lot of time for Facebook to integrate all its services into a single app, and we don’t even know if it will eventually succeed. But every major endeavor starts with a small step, and today Facebook made one.

The social network giant has just announced it has launched a brand-new Messenger app for iOS devices, which is cleaner, smaller and faster. The new Messenger for iOS is just 1/4 the size of the previous app and contains just 360,000 lines of code, down from 1.7 million.

Because of that, the app will load twice as fast and will consume a lot fewer resources while it’s running. Another important aspect is that Messenger for iOS is now simpler than ever. Facebook reduced the contact list from 40 versions to just one.

Although the app has been rebuilt from the ground up, some features might be temporarily unavailable, but Facebook promised to bring them back as soon as possible, so if you notice that something is missing, then you’ll have to wait for developers to add it.

Facebook has already started the rollout of the new Messenger for iOS, but it will take a few weeks for the app to appear for everyone, so give it time if you don’t see it in the App Store yet.

  • Robinsons developed a loyalty and engagement app

Robinsons developed a loyalty and engagement app

Singapore-headquartered department-store chain Robinsons has built a 120,000-strong loyalty program database in just 18 months using an app-based solution.

The program, called R, is signing up new customers every day through interactions with customers of the company’s five stores in Singapore and Malaysia.

The 161-year-old department store has reinvented its customer relationship strategy since teaming with Capillary Technologies to develop the app and associated data management and interpretation activities.

Danny Lim, Senior GM at Robinson, said the program evolved because the store wanted to communicate and interact better with its customer base than the previous credit-card anchored loyalty programs allowed. The application can be used by OCBC Robinsons Group Visa Card Members and Private Label Card Members and those signing up directly to the app, called ‘R-Listers’.

“We really needed to have more flexibility to reach out to our customers in the way that best resonates and works well with them,” Lim told Inside Retail Asia. “So through Capillary, we undertook a couple of initiatives towards integrating our customer base. And today we’ve got a relatively much more robust program that we are taking to the next level, year by year.”

Charuvagun S, who is regional director of Southeast Asia for customer success at Capillary, said the two companies decided a mobile application was the best way to start improving engagement with customers.

As a department store, Robinsons has hundreds of brands it is constantly trying to share news about with its customers – and shoppers in general. The app enables people to learn what is new in stores, something difficult or costly to achieve through traditional media like newspapers.

At the same time, the company is building a rewards program so people can acquire points and then spend them on items from a catalog of products.

“The mobile application has a lot of content in it that the consumer can interact with. They can look at the different brands available in the department stores, learn more about the brands and also understand where they are on the loyalty journey, how many points they have, and what they can do with those points.”

To build interest in the program the app highlights a catalog of items that they can redeem points to buy.

“So the idea was to make the engagement stronger, not just through push mechanisms, which are traditionally used – and we continue to use EDMs and SMS notifications – but also for customers,” said Charuvagun S. “Whatever they want to know about Robinson’s they can use the app to find out.”

The app was an immediate success upon launch. Robinsons’ customer-acquisition rate rose four-fold, from around 1000-1200 per month to 5000. Within 12 months, 60,000 customers had installed it on their phones.

Perhaps the most significant measure of the app’s success is the spending behavior of members. The average transaction value of members is running at 25 percent more than that of nonmembers, and there was a 25-per-cent increase in the average basket size.

Lim says a positive spinoff from developing the program is the additional insights into their customers’ shopping behavior, such as how much they spend by demographic group and what promotions or communications they are responding to. An early lesson was recognizing that the retailer did not offer as many reward options for customers wanting to redeem their points as they should have had.

“It was really important for us to be able to quickly react to this and increase our offering,” said Lim.

He believes that upgrading the reward system and developing a custom app for the business is an important step in preparing for future trends in digital commerce and customer relationships. He feels there is a lot of hype surrounding e-commerce when consumers are increasingly turning to mobile commerce: people are using their mobiles to shop, or they are viewing websites on their phones rather than a computer.

“There needs to be a lot of synergy in terms of omnichannel, of having a physical store presence and also really connecting to the digital world itself. E-commerce also serves as a marketing platform, aside from a selling channel.”

Charuvagun S agrees. “One of the challenges that retailers are facing is that there is this big movement of different technologies coming into the picture, of different solutions in the market. Being able to choose what is the right technology that fits into the overall plan and how the technology is to be leveraged to continue the brand story as well as improving the customer experiences is key.

“Somebody has to have a good understanding of retailers, to understand the whole ecosystem and to bring solutions that fit into the brand story. Also, like with so many things around, prioritization becomes key. Having a crawl-walk-run strategy and a six-month plan every half year to see what is to be implemented so as to learn more from those six months and take that feedback into the next six months; to continuously improve on the journey itself. That digital transformation journey itself becomes key.”

The next step for Lim is to integrate the rewards program app with the e-commerce platform so the entire pathway is seamless and that customers can buy products via the app.

Charuvagun S says the current rewards platform solution is focused on engagement. “It’s like having a salesperson sit inside a customer’s mobile phone to constantly engage the customer. Apart from that, we also bring data from different sources like transactional data, and other data like NPS (net promoter score) survey data into the platform.”

Pulling that data and engagement together via machine learning can provide a lot of insights into the business which can be used to refine and improve communication with customers.

Capillary has also been running tests to see how the app can be used to create more engagement when customers are in store. During the Black Friday sales, for example, new offers were added every 15 minutes, which would run for limited time spans, such as 30 or 60 minutes.

Filtering is a key part of the app which Capillary says it will continue to develop.

“If you have a specific communication going out to customers to talk about a new product that is being launched, we can be specific, communicating only with customers who have bought similar products or similar color or a range of products. All these can be filtered,” says Charuvagun S.

“It is a tactical communication where we can reach exactly the segment of customers who would be likely to respond to such a campaign.

“What’s happening today is that with the different technology touchpoints that we have, we’re getting a lot of data about customers from multiple places. If you go to an e-commerce site, you get a lot of clickstream data. If you browse for 10 minutes on an e-commerce website, I’ll get 1000 data points about all that you have been doing on the side. And we get a lot of data from social media on what you’re saying about the brand, whether you are talking good things or not, if you like the brand pages, etc. That is the other data that we are getting from social media.

“Then, we also get transactional information from what you do in the retail store and on other e-commerce sites. The challenge now is how do we make all this data actionable.”

Charuvagun S says the software should be able to ascertain what products customers are interested in on the site, down to the color and specific features. That information should enable personalized communication to a customer talking specifically about those products.

“That’s the key to how you leverage all the data that is coming into the system, in terms of providing that insight to the marketing team so it can take action, or automate the action.”

That, he says, is the focus area for both Capillary and Robinson’s during the coming months.

  • WhatsApp for iOS remains without dark mode

WhatsApp for iOS remains without dark mode

The iOS version of WhatsApp is one of the not so many popular apps that doesn’t have a dark theme yet. Facebook delayed the release of this long-awaited feature for so long that we were not even sure it was still coming or not.

But it looks like Facebook does plan to add a dark mode to WhatsApp for iOS, it’s just that it takes the company a lot longer than anyone would have expected. Although we would have wanted this story to be about the new dark mode coming to WhatsApp, it’s not.

However, if you have access to WhatsApp beta builds on your iPhone, you’ll be pleased to know that Facebook has started to test dark mode.

This specific version of WhatsApp for iOS is only available through Apple’s TestFlight platform, and can only be tested on an iPhone. Also, the beta version will only be available for download to select testers.

We have no idea how long it will take Facebook to bring dark theme to WhatsApp for iOS, but it shouldn’t be long now that the feature is ready for public testing.

  • New App Makes Retail Workplaces More Accessible for People with a Disability

New App Makes Retail Workplaces More Accessible for People with a Disability

The first workforce management solution app to be fully accessibility compliant has been launched, making retail workplaces in Singapore and across the Asia-Pacific region more inclusive for people with disabilities and an ageing population.

The new release of Humanforce’s mobile app complies with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 AA rating. This means it meets 100 percent of the recommendations for making content accessible to people with disabilities including colour-blindness and low vision.

“There is an unresolved tension between the business and technology vendor desire for integrating the most advanced technology solutions that often best meet the needs of millennial workers, and also making the workplace more inclusive of diversity,” explained Mike McGee, Chief Product Officer, Humanforce. “Too often we see the former being the priority at the expense of workers with a disability and those that make up our ageing workforce.”

Recent research from McKinsey found that businesses, such as large chain retailers, with higher diversity are more likely to achieve higher financial performance. However, people with a disability are often overlooked when it comes to workplace diversity. The Ministry of Manpower found in June 2018 that 28.6 percent of people with a disability in Singapore were employed, while 4.2 percent were unemployed but looking for work, which translate to an unemployment rate of 12.9 percent. Additionally, it found that 67.2 percent of people with a disability were outside of the labour force due to poor health or disability. This compares to a 2.3 percent unemployment rate for the entire Singapore population.

“Retail employers can be doing much more to make the workplace more inclusive for the people with a disability currently working and also to increase employment of the many people with a disability looking for work. And as we see the retirement age raised to 35 by 2030 and the re-employment age also go up to 70 by 2030, we’re also going to see the number of people with a disability in the workplace increase.

“A key piece of the puzzle is ensuring all the workplace technologies retailers invest in to increase their success don’t work to preference younger workers, while discriminating against workers with a disability and the ageing population,” added Mike.

  • Taxis, ride-hailing apps hike Tet ride charges

Taxis, ride-hailing apps hike Tet ride charges

Taxis are refusing to charge by the meter and ride-hailing apps have doubled ‘peak hour’ prices and added surcharges as Tet draws close.

Monday evening, five days before the Lunar New Year (Tet), Hoang Viet requested a car on ride-hailing app Grab. He was surprised to find that his 14-kilometer trip from an office block in Duy Tan street to the Gia Lam Bus Station cost VND280,000 ($12.11), more than double the usual price.

When he tried to request rides on other apps like Be and Fastgo, he found that the prices were cheaper, but was unable to find a driver who would accept his request.

Many others have reported running into similar situations since last week, especially during peak hours when travel demand is high as people rush to shop before Tet.

Ngoc Mai, another resident, said it took her half an hour to call a taxi home after taking her child to a shopping center in downtown Hanoi.

“Before opening the door, the driver asked me for VND120,000 ($5.2) for a 5-kilometer trip. This usually costs VND60,000-70,000 ($2.6-3) on regular days,” she said.

Mai then asked three other taxis parked around the mall, but received similarly high quotes, with drivers saying they were charging more because of traffic jams around the city. Mai ended up requesting a ride on an app, but it took 20 minutes for the driver to come to pick her up.

During the ride, Mai’s driver apologized and explained that the roads had become heavily congested over the last few days. Despite his company charging higher fees, he was making only VND1 million ($43) from less than 10 rides, while on normal days, his revenue could go up to VND1.5 million ($65), he said.

“It’s not that we want to reject passengers, but roads are now very busy, especially in downtown streets, where it could take an hour to go just one kilometer. Yes, we have raised prices, but Grab has done so as well,” said the driver of a traditional taxi who did not wish to be named.

Taxi prices are expected to go even higher, with most-ride hailing firms adding a surcharge to support drivers during the Tet holiday – from January 23-27.

From Wednesday, passengers will have to pay an extra VND10,000 ($0.43) per trip on GrabBike and VND15,000 ($0.65) on GrabCar, the Singapore-based company has announced.

Local ride-hailing firm Be also said it was adding a surcharge of VND20,000 ($0.86) per car ride during Tet peak times, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 4 p.m.-11 p.m.

Meanwhile, Indonesia-based Go-Viet has said it will charge an additional VND20,000 ($0.86) for GoBike rides for the first 2 kilometers, and an additional VND5,000 ($0.22) for every kilometer after. It will also charge an additional VND10,000 ($0.43) fee per trip during the night.

  • Facebook dark theme rolling out to more Android users

Facebook dark theme rolling out to more Android users

Facebook has been trying to implement the long-awaited dark theme into its Android app for many months, which isn’t something unusual. We’ve been hearing reports about the company’s struggles to finalize the feature, but it looks like Facebook’s endeavor turned into a marathon rather than a sprint.

Starting today, a lot more people have started to see the new dark theme in the Facebook app reports. We’re still not convinced that Facebook has finally nailed the feature for Android users and is making it available for everyone.

However, it’s a clear sign that the company is confident in the results and is rolling out the dark theme to more Android users, one of the final steps before a wider deployment. It’s probably just coincidence that a few days ago WhatsApp has finally managed to deliver the highly-anticipated dark theme to Android beta users.

We can’t promise you that you’ll see the new dark theme right away, but we’re certain it won’t take long until Facebook will start a wider roll-out of the feature, so stick around for more updates on the matter.
