  • Mercedes-Benz To Increase Its Share In Aston Martin

Mercedes-Benz To Increase Its Share In Aston Martin

Aston Martin is a celebrated British car manufacturer and the company is not in great shape financially. But in order to make the going easier, Aston Martin has announced that Mercedes-Benz will increase its stake in the company to 20 percent. In return, Mercedes-Benz will grant Aston Martin access to its latest technologies. These also include Mercedes’ technology for plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles. What this essentially means is that Aston Martin will reduce the cost and risk of developing its own technology for electrified vehicles and will focus on investment in other areas and expand its model portfolio.

Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin Lagonda, said “Today, we take another major step forward as our long-term partnership with Mercedes-Benz AG moves to another level with them becoming one of the Company’s largest shareholders. Through this newly expanded agreement, we secure access to world-class technologies to support our long-term product expansion plans, including electric and hybrid powertrains and this partnership underpins our confidence in the future.”

Mercedes-Benz will provide technology (including powertrain architecture for a conventional, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles) for all product launches through 2027. Aston Martin has plans to reach 10,000 unit sales per annum by 2024/25 although there is still a long way to go, with the British company delivering just 2,752 cars so far in 2020, which is a drop of 39 percent over 2019. But a part of that can be attributed to the global corona pandemic as well. Aston Martin’s operating losses for 2020 so far stands at £229m. The company aims to have a net income of £500m with interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization added back by the mid part of the decade.

In its recently released financial statement, Aston Martin says that the company has a plan to update its entire front-engined sports car line-up, introduce a new SUV model which will sit along-side the DBX, and launch a new range of mid-engine cars.

  • Aston Martin Has Posted A Loss Of $293 Million In First-Half Of 2020

Aston Martin Has Posted A Loss Of $293 Million In First-Half Of 2020

Carmaker Aston Martin, which has changed its boss and brought in a billionaire investor this year, posted a deeper first-half loss of 227 million pounds ($293 million) on Wednesday amid a slump in sales. Its main factory, which closed during the lockdown, is not due to reopen until the end of August as the firm focused on resuming production at a new site in Wales, where its first sport-utility vehicle, the DBX, rolled off the line this month.

Renowned as James Bond’s carmaker of choice, the firm has had a difficult time since floating in 2018 as it failed to meet expectations and burnt through cash, prompting it to give a stake to a consortium led by billionaire Lawrence Stroll.

Aston Martin is now focused on resuming production at a new site in Wales, where its SUV, Aston Martin DBX will be manufactured.

Since then, it has announced job cuts, reduced inventories, and picked a new chief executive among a series of changes, while it is also responding to the pandemic, which contributed to a 41% drop in sales.

“It has been a challenging period with our dealers and factories closed due to COVID-19, in addition to aligning our sales with inventory with the associated impact on financial performance as we reposition for future success,” Stroll said.

The firm’s half-year pre-tax loss of 227 million pounds compares to a loss of 80 million pounds in the same period last year. Revenue fell by nearly two thirds to 146 million pounds.

The Aston Martin DBX SUV has embarked on a testing program that will see it put to its performance limits while ensuring it functions as an off-roader.

The company said it had identified an accounting error in its U.S. region, meaning the firm’s loss was slightly more profound in 2019 with a reduction in earnings before interest and tax of 15.3 million pounds.

Aston’s first 4×4 is central to its turnaround plans as it enters a lucrative segment of the market in a bid to widen its appeal, including to more female buyers.

“We’re pleased with how it’s developing,” finance chief Ken Gregor said.

  • Aston Martin Callum Vanquish 25 Production Model Revealed

Aston Martin Callum Vanquish 25 Production Model Revealed

Just nine months after announcing the project, the production iteration Aston Martin Callum Vanquish 25 by R-Reforged has been revealed alongside confirmation that customer car build will commence in September. Designer Ian Callum has evolved the concept shown in 2019 with a revised interior, more trim options and definitive chassis and powertrain set up. In fact, Callum talked about this venture even in our exclusive episode of Freewheeling With SVP and gave us a hint that the car is on the way.

The Vanquish 25 now features over 350 engineerings, material, and design changes that transform the much-loved car into a more practical and relevant GT. Having covered over 32,000 kms of rigorous testing on UK’s broad range of road types and qualities, as well as multiple sessions on both the wet and dry tracks at Michelin’s Ladoux proving ground, engineers carefully determined a crisper set up to amplify the driving experience of a classic GT. Highly tuned rebound and compression of the Bilstein dampers provides composure with noticeably more agility and control. Careful bush selection, stiffer anti-roll bars, a 10mm lower ride height, up to 60mm wider track, and specific Michelin Pilot Sport tire compounds assure linearity in roll and composure without resorting to a rock-solid track feel that contemporary GTs often lean towards. Steering feel, aided by the fitting of a more slender wheel rim, lower seating position, and the suspension improvements, is sharper with more feedback to reward the enthusiast driver. The overall result is a more versatile GT eminently suitable for everyday use.

Ian Callum, Founder, Callum Designs, said, “The designers, engineers, and craftspeople have poured all their energy into breathing new life into the car, pushing the boundaries of every detail: flawless surface finishes, tight shut lines and a crafted interior I believe you’ll enjoy spending time in. I’m particularly impressed with how it drives. From the lower, more sculpted, and cossetting seat, the crisper steering with enhanced feel to just the glorious way it sounds, I think we have created something quite special.”

The Vanquish 25 by R-Reforged is offered with eight trim colors, three transmission variants – manual, auto and semi-automatic – as well as three bespoke 20-inch wheel choices. The car’s leather trim is provided by Bridge of Weir Leather Company, while Bremont’s removable pocket watch, an industry-first, remains prominent in the interior that now includes brushed or polished dark chrome details, and a walnut veneer option instead of carbon. Mulberry has developed the luggage to fit snugly in the rear of the cabin.

R-Reforged has now also revealed revisions to the engine and the engineers have detailed the area with carbon and leather dressing alongside the bespoke carbon intake system and tuned equal length stainless steel primary collectors that create a sonorous V12 howl from the 580bhp engine. The car will be built starting September with initial cars destined for Europe and Latin America.

  • Aston Martin To Shed Upto 500 Jobs In Cost Cutting Drive

Aston Martin To Shed Upto 500 Jobs In Cost Cutting Drive

British luxury carmaker Aston Martin plans to shed up to 500 jobs as it seeks to bring its cost base into line with reduced sports car production levels, it said on Thursday. The job cuts come a week after Aston Martin confirmed that Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG, would become chief executive on August 1, replacing Andy Palmer. The 107-year old firm said the job losses reflected lower than originally planned production volumes and improved productivity across the business. An employee and trade union consultation process will be launched in the coming days.

An employee and trade union consultation process will be launched in the coming days

Aston Martin, famed for being fictional secret agent James Bond’s car of choice, has seen its share price plummet since floating in October 2018. Last month it posted a deep first-quarter loss after sales dropped by almost a third due to the impact of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

“The measures announced today will right-size the organizational structure and bring the cost base into line with reduced sports car production levels, consistent with restoring profitability,” it said.

Aston Martin’s DBX SUV will be a key product for boosting volumes

It said its first sports utility vehicle (SUV), the DBX, which is key to boost volumes and appeal to new buyers including more women, remains on track for deliveries in the summer and has a strong order book.

Aston Martin is also reducing costs and removing non-critical expenditure in other areas, including contractor numbers, site footprint, marketing and travel. It said the restructuring is expected to deliver total annual savings of about 38 million pounds ($47.6 million). Restructuring costs are expected to be about 12 million pounds. Shares in Aston Martin, down 78% over the last year, closed Wednesday at 68.9 pence, valuing the business at 1.05 billion pounds.

  • Aston Martin Posts Deep Loss As Coronavirus Outbreak Hits Sales

Aston Martin Posts Deep Loss As Coronavirus Outbreak Hits Sales

Aston Martin posted a first-quarter pretax loss of 119 million pounds ($146 million) after sales dropped by nearly a third due to the impact of the coronavirus outbreak and the destocking of dealers, the carmaker said on Wednesday.

“COVID-19 and the resulting global economic shutdown has had a material impact on our performance this quarter,” said Chief Executive Andy Palmer.

The carmaker, which has seen core retail sales slump by an annual 31%, has furloughed staff, introduced additional safety measures and cut the pay of its senior management as part of measures to handle the crisis caused by the pandemic.

Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, who leads a consortium which took a stake in the company earlier this year, hopes to pursue a turnaround partly by sharing Formula One technology with the firm’s range of road cars.

But the firm said on Wednesday the pandemic meant it could no longer provide full-year guidance.

“Given the ongoing uncertainties, as is prudent, the company continues to review all future funding and refinancing options to increase liquidity,” it said.

  • Aston Martin Confirms Limited Edition V12 Speedster

Aston Martin Confirms Limited Edition V12 Speedster

Aston Martin has confirmed that a strictly limited number of the new V12 Speedster will make it production. The car will make its global debut later this year, with discerning drivers around the world offered the opportunity to acquire this sports car.

The V12 Speedster, created by in-house bespoke service Q by Aston Martin, is all about being a driver-oriented sports car and yes it is a two-seater. The new car’s design, while modern and dynamic, also clearly nods to both Aston Martin’s legendary 1959 Le Mans 24 hours- and 1000km of Nurburgring race-winning DBR1 as also the Centenary CC100 Speedster Concept shown in 2013. It’s forward-looking features are shaped from the same advanced materials and expert engineering used throughout Aston Martin’s contemporary sports car range.

Creating the new V12 Speedster has taken months of meticulous design and planning work by the teams from both Q by Aston Martin, and Aston Martin Design. At the new car’s heart lies a high-performance variant of Aston Martin’s now iconic, 5.2-litre V12 Twin-Turbo engine, capable of generating an output of around 700 horsepower and 700 Nm. The engine is mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission mounted towards the rear of the car. The company says that the engine note and sound quality play an important part in the overall experience.

Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group CEO, Dr. Andy Palmer said: “The V12 Speedster we’re proud to confirm today once again showcases not only this great British brand’s ambition and ingenuity, but also celebrates our rich and unrivaled heritage. The 88 enthusiast drivers and collectors who secure the keys to these cars can be confident that in doing so, they are also securing an iconic new piece of Aston Martin history.”

Deliveries of the car will start from the first quarter of 2021.

  • Billionaire Lawrence Stroll Seeks Big Stake In Aston Martin

Billionaire Lawrence Stroll Seeks Big Stake In Aston Martin

Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, owner of Formula One team Racing Point, is preparing a bid for a major stake in Aston Martin , Autocar magazine reported, sending the luxury sports car maker’s battered shares up 17 percent on Thursday.

Aston Martin, the drive of choice for fictional British secret agent James Bond, has seen its shares slump since its flotation in October 2018 as sales have failed to meet expectations.

Stroll, who is the father of Formula One driver Lance Stroll, is heading up a consortium looking to take a “major shareholding” in the British company, Autocar and the racefans.net website reported on Thursday.

Racefans.net said Racing Point could be rebranded as Aston Martin if Stroll succeeded in taking a controlling stake.

Aston Martin declined to comment and Racing Point said Stroll was unavailable for comment.

The carmaker’s shares were up nearly 17% at 5.88 pounds ($7.54) at 1414 GMT, valuing the business at about 1.3 billion pounds, but still far below their initial public offering (IPO) price of 19 pounds.

As the car industry consolidates through deals such as the Peugeot-Fiat merger, Aston has said it does not need to belong to a bigger automotive group, pointing to the success of stand-alone rival Ferrari .

But the sale of a stake could help boost the company’s prospects as it seeks to turn around a poor performance, which pushed it to a 92.3 million pound ($118.4 million) loss in the first nine months of the year.

In August, Aston’s biggest investor, Strategic European Investment Group, acquired an additional 3% stake in the company.

A month later, Aston raised $150 million in debt at 12% interest, hiking its borrowing costs, to bolster its balance sheet for the launch of its DBX sports utility vehicle next year, with the option for another $100 million.

The company’s hopes rest on almost doubling sales with its first SUV, which enters production in 2020, particularly by attracting more female buyers to the brand.

Aston is also the title sponsor of the Honda-powered Red Bull team, former world champions who won three races this year with Dutch 22-year-old Max Verstappen.

Aston will be competing in the World Endurance Championship and the Le Mans 24 Hours with its Valkyrie hypercar from 2021.

Mercedes’ parent Daimler also has a small stake in Aston.

Stroll, a collector of vintage Ferraris, has been involved in Formula One and motor racing for years and also owns Canada’s Mont Tremblant circuit in Quebec.

He made his money through investing in fashion brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and Michael Kors, but came to wider prominence in motor racing circles after bankrolling his son’s career.

Lance Stroll, 21, moved to Racing Point from Williams this season after a consortium led by his father bought the Force India team, which was co-owned by financially troubled Indian magnate Vijay Mallya and had fallen into administration.

The Silverstone-based team, which uses Mercedes engines, finished seventh overall this season but is planning a factory expansion.

  • Aston Martin Valhalla To Be Featured In The Upcoming 25th James Bond Movie

Aston Martin Valhalla To Be Featured In The Upcoming 25th James Bond Movie

Further extending its deep connection with the James Bond franchise, Aston Martin has recently revealed the carmaker’s new mid-engined hypercar Valhalla will be a part of the upcoming 25th Bond movie, staring actor Daniel Craig. In addition to the recently unveiled Aston Martin Valhalla, the new 007 movie will also feature the classic Series II V8 Vantage and the iconic DB5. While the Vantage was last seen in a Bond film more than 30 years ago when Timothy Dalton drove it in The Living Daylights, the Aston Martin DB5 has been a series regular driven by almost all major 007s. Last time we saw the DB5 was in the 2015 movie Spectre.

The new Valhalla will be the first mid-engined Aston Martin car to be driven by a James Bond, and only the second among all. Last time a James Bond character drove a mid-engined car was in the1981 movie For Your Eyes Only, and it was Roger Moore driving the Lotus Esprit Turbo.

As for the Aston Martin Valhalla, the all-new hypercar will be positioned below the company’s flagship, Valkyrie, which is more track-focused, and instead be a more road-friendly usable everyday car. An outcome of the collaboration between Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing, the Valhalla was earlier known as the AM-RB 003. The car uses a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and is powered by a twin-turbocharged V6, assisted by a battery-powered electric hybrid system. The powertrain system is expected to offer a combined power of up 986 bhp. The exhaust system uses dual outlets, which are positioned on top of the car, similar to the Porsche 918 Spyder.

While we are likely to see a pre-production model in the movie, the new Aston Martin Valhalla is expected to officially enter production in 2021. It is expected to compete with the upcoming successor of the McLaren P1.

  • The Aston Martin Valhalla Is The Company’s New Hypercar

The Aston Martin Valhalla Is The Company’s New Hypercar

Formerly identified by its codename AM-RB 003, Aston Martin’s latest mid-engined hypercar collaboration with Red Bull Advanced Technologies and Adrian Newey has been officially named the Aston Martin Valhalla. Named after the warrior’s paradise celebrated in ancient Norse mythology, Valhalla employs a lightweight construction method and radical aerodynamics pioneered in the Valkyrie. The Valhalla will be propelled by a combination of a high-efficiency, high-output turbocharged V6 petrol engine and a battery-electric hybrid system. Of course, it’s a limited edition model and only 500 examples of this all-carbon fibre hypercar will be built.

Together with the recently announced Vanquish Vision Concept, Valhalla continues this proud, seven decade old ‘V’ car naming strategy, providing an evocative and powerful moniker fit for one of the world’s most compelling ultra-high performance cars.

Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group Chief Executive Officer, Andy Palmer said, “Aston Martin model names always attract a lot of attention. They do so because they invariably capture an emotion or tell a story. In following the Valkyrie we knew the Aston Martin Valhalla needed to make a strong statement of its own, yet also offer continuity and a clear connection. Norse mythology contains such powerful language and rich storytelling it felt only right that the AM-RB 003 should follow the Valkyrie’s theme. For those fortunate enough to own one I’m sure they will recognise and appreciate the name’s connotations of glory and happiness, for there can be few more hallowed places than the driver’s seat of an Aston Martin Valhalla.”

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, 50 ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ DBS Superleggera special edition cars will be sold. Painted Olive Green to match the original 1969 Aston Martin DBS driven by James Bond in the movie, the new models will take bring in a brutish elegance to the DBS Superleggera. It is 50 years since filming began for the sixth James Bond film, which told the story of Bond villain ‘Blofeld’ and his ongoing attempts to hold the world to ransom. The 1969 Aston Martin DBS was James Bond’s perfect partner to save the world.

Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group Chief Executive Officer, said, “Aston Martin is synonymous with James Bond and the DBS from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service has provided great inspiration to the team tasked with creating this very special edition. This new DBS Superleggera will be an extremely distinguished ‘brute in a suit’, designed to capture the essence of the iconic DBS from the 1969 film but with a 5.2 litre twin-turbo V12, 715bhp engine!”

The 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 on the DBS Superleggera engine is set low and as far back in the chassis as possible to optimize the center-of-gravity and weight distribution, this high-performance engine develops 725PS at 6500rpm and 900Nm from 1800-5000rpm. Detailed tuning of the V12 together with an exhausting strategy with active valves and quad tailpipes ensures that the DBS Superleggera is audible wherever it goes.

The black drinks case opens via the bright metal clasp to reveal the matching red felt-lined interior, with space for two bottles of champagne and four champagne flutes.

Each of the 50 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service DBS Superleggera special editions will retail at 300,007 Euros, with first deliveries to customers commencing in Q4 2019

  • Aston Martin Shows Off DBS Superleggera Volante

Aston Martin Shows Off DBS Superleggera Volante

Aston Martin has opened the roof on the new DBS Superleggera Volante. This is the second Aston Martin to carry the Volante name following the introduction of the company’s Second Century Plan. The DBS Superleggera Volante has been designed in-house under the guidance of Executive Vice President & Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman. Aston Martin’s primary mission has also been to retain the coupe’s powerful dynamics, aggressive poise and astonishing performance.

Powered by Aston Martin’s own 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12, producing 715 bhp and 900 Nm of torque, the top speed of the DBS Superleggera Volante stands at 340 kmph. 0-100 kmph is done in just 3.6 seconds and it’s not just the power and torque that makes the difference but also the car’s aerodynamic credentials which help in commanding and exploiting the surface airflow to maximum effect. Up front, the car’s splitter and airdam work in unison, accelerating airflow underneath the front of the car to deliver true downforce and assist cooling by feeding air to the front brakes. The new deeper side strake draws more air from the front wheel arch to reduce lift and aid high-speed stability.

Executive Vice President & Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman said: “DBS Superleggera produces a spectacular and relentless level of performance and so for the Volante, we focussed on bringing that extra level of sensory overload that only an open-top Super GT can deliver inside the cabin. With the unique dynamics, beautiful yet brutish design and the unmistakable harmonics of Aston Martin’s 5.2-litre V12 engine, we believe we have delivered a unique and unforgettable driving experience that is synonymous with the traditions of the Volante name.”

Behind the front wheels, the ‘curlicue’ allows air to escape and flow smoothly along the car’s flanks, while the double diffuser at the rear allows air to exit cleanly and neutralise lift as efficiently as possible. A revised iteration – to accommodate the Volante’s clothed roofline – of the revolutionary Aeroblade ll system continues to deliver additional downforce at the car’s rear. At VMAX, the DBS Superleggera Volante produces 177kg of downforce, just 3kg less than the coupe, an impressive feat when considering the car’s fundamental aerodynamic changes.

The 900Nm of torque is fed via a carbon-fibre prop shaft to a new ZF 8-speed automatic transmission mounted at the back of the car. Specially developed adaptive software gauges the conditions the car is operating in, along with the driver’s demands, to ensure the car is in exactly the right gear at the right time.

Aston Martin’s engineers have worked hard to ensure the best possible roof and rear package is achieved, while still delivering conflicting targets of styling and durability. The roof operation takes 14 seconds to open and 16 seconds to close and can be operated from inside or, for added convenience, from the remote key within a two-metre radius of the car.

  • Aston Martin DBS 59 Pays Tribute To Its 1959 Le Mans Victory

Aston Martin DBS 59 Pays Tribute To Its 1959 Le Mans Victory

It was in 1959 that Aston Martin put up a spectacular show at Le Mans, which is one of the toughest endurance races in the world and managed a one-two finish that year. 60 years later, Aston Martin has designed a Special Edition DBS Superleggera to celebrate its 1959 Le Mans victory and will be calling it the DBS 59. The DBS 59 will be a limited edition model and Aston Martin will manufacture only 24 units which will represent each hour of the race.

The Aston Martin DBS 59 has been developed by the Q division of the company that carefully studied the DBR 1 race car which took the victory. Boffins at the Q by Aston Martin division have tried to mimic the race cars’ Racing Green paint scheme. In a bid to make the limited edition model look modern and contemporary, they have added new elements to it like the gloss finish carbon fibre roof panel, bespoke front grille, new brake callipers, 21-inch forged Y spoke satin dual-tone wheels and bronze finish on the Superleggera badging on the hood.

The cabin of the special edition DBS 59 is finished with the same weave design used in the DBR1 and the company has aesthetically used Bronze even on the inside. The paddle shifters are finished in Bronze along with the 59 edition logo on the seatbacks.  The entire cabin is finished Obsidian Black and Chestnut Tan Leather and the sun visor is embossed with the exact date on which the race took place.

The new DBS 59 Special Edition model celebrates the 323 laps which the Aston Martin race cars completed in the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1959. Aston Martin chose the Superleggera to design the DBS 59 model since it’s the fastest car in its stable.
