American fast-food chain A&W Singapore will open second outlet in Ang Mo Kio Hub in July.

The outlet at AMK Hub’s basement will span 2812sqft and seat up to 142 diners.

Unlike the Jewel Changi outlet, the AMK one will be ‘family-oriented’ and more flexible to accommodate larger groups of diners.

There will also be a counter for customers to watch waffles being made, and a selfie corner to satisfy millennials.

A retail section will sell merchandise such as t-shirts, caps and pins will be set up.

“The A&W brand is something people remember from childhood,” A&W international manager for business development Sally See said.

“We see baby boomers taking their children to the Jewel outlet. With the AMK Hub outlet, we hope they can relive those memories of the time when A&W used to be in Ang Mo Kio.”

Initially, the new store will trade during normal mall hours but it will eventually be open 24-seven.

The menu will feature A&W signature items, and will expand to include breakfasts as well.

More A&W Singapore stores are scheduled to open from the second quarter of next year with the Tampines and Jurong areas targeted.

A&W Singapore makes a Huge Comeback

American fast food chain A&W Singapore is making a comeback this week at Jewel Changi.

The chain made its original debut in the city back in 1966 with an outlet at Dunearn Road, burt closed all five outlets in 2003, exiting the market.

After the Jewel Changi return, a second outlet will be opened by June, and a third next year, however the locations have yet to be revealed.

“After opening here, we wanted to be able to scale [at] such a speed it would ease the crowd at the first outlet,” said Kelvin Tan, A&W International’s director of marketing and communication.

A&W Singapore also intends to apply for halal certification to cater to the big Muslim market in Singapore.

“The Muslim community formed a very big chunk of our business (in the past) and I think right now we will continue to respect and recognise that this particular market is very important to us,” Tan said.

And directly by A&W Restaurants, A&W Singapore’s menu also incorporates regional favourites such as the “golden aroma chicken” from A&W’s Malaysian and Indonesian outlets, and the “waffle sundae” from A&W outlets in Thailand.

Fast-food franchise A&W Malaysia is set to open around a dozen new outlets by next year.

The group currently operates 41 outlets in Kuala Lumpur and Perak that collectively employ 500 people.

Acting CEO Mohd Hasmadi Zainal said that the company has allocated around RM1.2 million (US$292,500) for each new branch. Seven branches will be opened by the end of this year, five of which will feature drive-through services, in key metropolitan locations such as Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Ipoh and Penang.

He added that better prospects for A&W Malaysia’s business are anticipated for the second half of this year based on these growth plans, given the positive performance of recently renovated existing branches.

A&W is a US-founded fast-food chain which is also about to make a return to Singapore after an absence of 13 years.

A&W to return to Singapore in 2018

he American fast-food chain’s root beer float, coney dog and curly fries are making a comeback. American fast-food chain A&W will set up shop in Singapore again, after exiting the market more than 10 years ago.

A&W CEO Kevin Bazner said that A&W has had an office in Singapore since 2016, and that the company is looking to open 30 to 40 new restaurants a year across Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

The company is currently looking for a retail space for its flagship in Singapore, which is scheduled to open next year. This flagship will also serve as a training store for other Southeast Asia outlets.

A&W – which stands for “Allen and Wright” – made its debut in Singapore in 1966 at Dunearn Road, and the first A&W drive-through opened in 1970 at Bukit Timah Road.

The fast-food joint’s hamburgers, hot dogs and root beer soon became hugely popular among Singaporeans and it is believed its success helped pave the way for other fast-food establishments to set up shop in Singapore, including McDonald’s (1979), Kentucky Fried Chicken (1977) and Burger King (1982).

However, by 2003, A&W faced stiff competition from its competitors and shuttered its remaining outlets in the same year.
