    Airtel taps Ciena for high-speed backbone network

    India’s Bharti Airtel has contracted Ciena to deploy a large-scale photonic control plane backbone network that will connect more than 4,000 towns across the nation.

    Under the agreement, announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the companies will collaborate to deploy a network spanning 130,000km.

    The network deployment, which the companies said will be one of the world’s largest photonic control plane deployments, forms part of Airtel’s Project Leap network transformation program.

    Airtel plans to use the network to serve exploding demand for high-speed data services, and to enable the delivery of high-speed broadband to end users over 4G/5G/FTTH architectures.

    For retail and enterprise customers, the network will also support bandwidth on demand, optical VPNs, latency based routing and dynamic data center interconnection.

    Airtel CTO Randeep Sekhon said the backbone architecture will be capable of working with data rates of 400Gbps and higher, and delivering low-latency software-controlled connectivity for cloud infrastructure.

    “Airtel has always pioneered the introduction of cutting-edge network technologies to serve its customers. We are pleased to work with Ciena to build one of world’s largest optical spine and leaf networks, which is also a big step towards 5G readiness by leveraging our huge fiber assets,” he said.

    “This will not only scale our network for massive capacity but also protect traffic and enhance service delivery to all our customers. It will also help Airtel further strengthen its position as a key enabler of digital experiences in an increasingly connected world.”

    Huawei Marine to build backbone network for PNG

    Huawei Marine has secured a contract to build a national subsea cable backbone network for the Papua New Guinea government.

    The company will work with PNG DataCo, an operator established by the Papua New Guinea government, to construct a national backbone network linking major coastal centers and islands in the nation.

    The 5,457km cable network will provide domestic connectivity across the nation’s 14 largest cities, as well as international connectivity via a link to Jayapura in Indonesia.

    With a design capacity of 8Tbps, the cable will be designed provide more than 70% of Papua New Guinea’s domestic bandwidth requirements. Currently domestic telecoms capacity largely relies on satellite and microwave communications due to the country’s unique geography.

    “This new system is very important to Papua New Guinea as it not only includes a new submarine cable network but also provides internet gateways and data centers,” DataCo managing director Paul Komboi said.

    “This will improve the whole ICT infrastructure in the country and greatly increase network coverage, capacity and the availability of Internet and broadband services to end users.”

    He said Huawei Marine was selected for the project through a competitive tender process.

    MobiFone builds 300Gbps packet-optical backbone

    MobiFone is leveraging Ciena technology to build the Vietnamese operator’s first high-capacity converged packet-optical  network.

    Currently provisioned with 300Gbps, the network spans more than 1,400 kilometers across the country from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.

    This will help MobiFone provide high-speed mobile broadband services to businesses and consumers in more than 25 local provinces.

    With the network, MobiFone will be able to easily scale and automatically adapt network capabilities.

    Additionally, the network will use Ciena’s intelligent control plane technology to ensure survivability even in the case of multiple fiber cuts.

    ELCOM, a Ciena BizConnect channel partner, provided deployment services for this project.

    “Ciena’s cutting-edge optical platforms enable us to have a state-of-art backbone system. Demand for high-speed fixed and mobile data services, video content and the move to the cloud mean that network services in Vietnam have never been more important,” said Le Nam Tra, chairman of MobiFone.

    “With Ciena supporting the next evolution of the MobiFone backbone we can provide the scale and reach our consumer and business customers need for regional and international connectivity,” said the chairman.

    Mobifone deploys 300Gbps packet-optical backbone

    Vietnam’s second largest mobile operator Mobifone has constructed its fist high-capacity converged packet-optical backbone network using equipment from Ciena.

    The operator has deployed a network spaning more than 1,400km from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. The network currently has a capacity of 300Gbps.

    Mobifone plans to use the network to provide high-speed mobile broadband services to businesses and consumers in more than two dozen provinces.

    “Ciena’s cutting-edge optical platforms enable us to have a state-of-art backbone system. Demand for high-speed fixed and mobile data services, video content and the move to the cloud mean that network services in Vietnam have never been more important,” Mobifone chairman Le Nam Tra said.

    “With Ciena supporting the next evolution of the MobiFone backbone we can provide the scale and reach our consumer and business customers need for regional and international connectivity.”

    MobiFone is currently a state-owned operator but is undergoing a privatization process. The company is seeking an international partner to take up to a 49% stake as part of this process, and international operators including Australia’s Telstra, Norway’s Telenor and Sweden’s Comviq have reportedly expressed an interest in making the investment.

    A recent report  from the Australian Financial Review indicates that Telstra is seen as a good fit as a formerly state-owned operator that has gone through the privatization process.

    Sources told the publication that Telstra met with Vietnamese officials in May to discuss a potential deal.

    Hanoi Telecom taps Infinera to expand backbone

    Vietnamese wireless operator Hanoi Telecom Corporation has expanded its backbone network using equipment from Infinera.

    Hanoi Telecom extended its existing Infinera TM-Series metro network with the vendor’s DTN-X technology for its backbone connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau.

    The new technology is allowing Hanoi Telecom to deploy 500Gbps super-channels – a first for the Vietnam market.

    Infinera’s Instant Bandwidth is also being used to allow optical capacity to be easily software-activated in 100Gbps increments.

    “We intend to advance the deployment of high bandwidth solutions to our customers in the Vietnam market by using the DTN-X XTC Series based on the innovative PIC technology,” Hanoi Telecom chairwoman and CIO Trinh Minh Chau said.

    “Infinera’s Instant Bandwidth allows us to differentiate our services through pre-deployed capacity which can be delivered on-demand via software defined activation. In addition, Infinera’s platforms have demonstrated the type of reliability and quality we are looking for in our network.”

    Infinera’s local partner Nissho Electronics Vietnam oversaw the rollout.

    Hanoi Telecom provides carrier and wholesale services focused mainly on wireless, broadband and VoIP services, as well as retail operations under the Vietnam Mobile brand. The company is one of Vietnam’s lagest wireless operators with more than 13 million subscribers.
