  • Bentley Bentayga V8 Design Series Unveiled

Bentley Bentayga V8 Design Series Unveiled

Bentley is introducing a new special edition model to the Bentayga range and is calling it the V8 Design Series. The changes on the Bentley Bentayga V8 Design Series are limited to aesthetics in a bid to enhance its road presence. Bentley has taken the standard V8 variant and has updated it with special colour schemes and finish from Mulliner on the exterior as well as inside the cabin.

On the outside, the bumper is finished in body colour and there are gloss black exhaust pipes at the rear. The seven-spoke alloy wheels are finished in dark gray and get monochromatic treatment which goes well with the shade. On the inside, the owner has the option to choose from a range of dual-tone colour options including red, orange, white and Blue and the accents are available as part of the design for the first time. The dashboard and console get contrasting accents as well and there is the Design Series badging on the seatbacks. The Bentley Bentayga V8 Design Series also features carbon-fibre palette running the length of the dashboard and similar trim on the doors.

Mechanically, the Bentley Bentayga will remain identical to the V8 standard version. It is powered by a 4.0-litre V8 motor which churns out 542 bhp at 6000 rpm and 770 Nm of peak torque between 2000 rpm and 4500 rpm. It takes 4.5 seconds to clock triple-digit speed and the top speed is limited to 290 kmph.

  • Bentley Continental GT To Summit Pikes Peak

Bentley Continental GT To Summit Pikes Peak

Bentley Motors is all set to return to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with the Continental GT. Well, of course, it’s going there with a purpose, as the company aims to capture the production car record with the car. Joining forces with Bentley is former ‘King of the Mountain’ Rhys Millen who has already helped Bentley set the record for the fastest SUV up the hill by driving the Bentayga up the 19.99 km course in just 10:49.9s – nearly 2 minutes faster than the previous record averaging 107 kmph and climbing almost 5,000 ft through 156 corners.

The expectations with him behind the wheel of the Continental GT are no different. Powered by the world’s most advanced 12-cylinder engine, the car develops 626 bhp and 900 Nm of torque. 0-100 kmph is done in just 3.7 seconds and it’s complimented by an advanced 48-volt roll control system for extraordinary dynamic ability. Twin-scroll turbochargers minimising turbo response time coupled with high and low pressure direct fuel injection optimise power and torque delivery. The Bentley Motorsport team – based at the company’s headquarters in Crewe, England – will prepare the car over the coming months.

Bentley’s Director of Motorsport, Brian Gush, said, “Bentley’s success last year along with the experience we gained will prove to be instrumental in preparing for our return to the mountain. The challenge to set the outright record for production cars is not one we underestimate, but we are confident in the combination of our W12 engine, the dynamic ability of the new Continental GT and the outstanding skill of Rhys Millen.”

  • Bentley ‘Be Extraordinary’ tour kicks off in Melbourne

Bentley ‘Be Extraordinary’ tour kicks off in Melbourne

Bentley has kicked off its Be Extraordinary tour in Melbourne, with the brand showcasing four models and a new, more affordable way of entering the Bentley brand.

With plans to expand the tour to include Brisbane, Bathurst, Sydney and Perth, the tour kicked off this week on the banks of the Yarra in Melbourne.

Located just outside Crown Casino, the Bentley marquee includes material samples and showcases iconic parts of Bentley’s history.

The Be Extraordinary tour has also been designed to launch Bentley’s new financial services, which make the ContinentalGT V8 and Flying Spur V8 more accessible to prospective buyers.

Both models now feature an attractive $399,000 drive away price, which can be packaged as part of a financial services product over 60 months, that comes out to $3999 per month.

“We had a look at the content and options that would be fitted to a standard GT V8 as an entry-level model to the brand. There has always been a misconception that Bentleys have been a million-dollar car and inaccessible to people. That’s a problem we’ve been looking to overcome in Australia,” said David Jackson, Bentley’s regional manager for the Asia Pacific region.

“We’ve introduced the ‘399 GT V8’, which has the options a customer would want — like the 21-inch alloys and sports exhaust – but you still come in with all taxes paid. That’s 399 on road. What we’re looking to do beyond this is expand the financial services to make the whole range accessible.”

Bentley has four vehicles on display at the Melbourne roadshow, including the Bentayga and Continental GT V8 Convertible, along with two examples of the $399,000 product in the Continental GT V8 and Flying Spur.

“There are a lot of people in different industries in Australia that are booming right now. Australia is a developing market and something like Bentley Financial Services then becomes an option for them. The point of this roadshow is to bring the Bentley brand to life for people,” Jackson said.

“People often don’t know about the Bentley brand and as part of this roadshow we have 21 extraordinary stories here. The point is to explain 21 things you may have never known about Bentley. Such as…James Bond in the Ian Fleming novels never drove an Aston Martin, he drove a Bentley.”

The Melbourne marquee and display will be around until Sunday 27 November, and operates from 11AM to 8PM each day. Residents of Sydney, Brisbane, Bathurst and Perth will also get to experience the roadshow later this year and next year.

“We are going to move this on to Sydney before the end of this year. It will stay there until Bathurst, and after Bathurst we will head to Brisbane, and the Grand Prix next year. Perth will then get it around April next year [2017],” Jackson said.

If you do get down to the display in Melbourne, ask to see the Linley Hamper by Mulliner in the rear of the Bentayga. This incredible picnic package includes a chilled champagne cooler with four crystal flutes.

There’s also storage room for a rug and a full cutlery set. And, at a reasonable $57,808, it seems like a no brainer option for your new Bentley Bentayga SUV.

  • Hyundai raids Bentley to turbo-charge Genesis luxury drive

Hyundai raids Bentley to turbo-charge Genesis luxury drive

After poaching Bentley’s design chief last year, Hyundai Motor said on Monday that it has also secured the services of the luxury marquee’s exterior designer.

Hyundai issued a statement saying Sangyup Lee will start work next month as its head of design, after Reuters reported the hiring of the Korean designer by the South Korean auto giant.

Lee is being brought in to work with Luc Donckerwolke, a Peruvian-born Belgian, to lead Hyundai’s development of its Genesis premium car brand – a project driven by Chung Euisun, heir-apparent to the Hyundai Group.

“Lee will help…enhance the design competitiveness of both the Hyundai and Genesis brands with his abundant experience in designing high-end luxury vehicles,” Hyundai said in its statement.

“His challenging and innovative design languages fit well with the DNA of Hyundai Motor.”

Hyundai Motor, which sells some 8 million cars a year, sees limited growth unless it breaks into new markets, a person close to the automaker told Reuters. For the South Korean firm, that means premium cars and maybe pick-up trucks and parts of Southeast Asia.

Lee said he has joined Hyundai Motor as a vice president in charge of Hyundai and Genesis design, reporting to Donckerwolke, who will head up Hyundai’s new Prestige Design Division, as well as being global head of Hyundai design – a reporting arrangement that Hyundai also confirmed on Monday.

Bentley spokesman Andrew Roberts confirmed Lee “has resigned from Bentley to take a position at another brand.”

Lee, 46, ran Bentley’s exterior design since 2012 having previously worked at Volkswagen group’s design center in California, and General Motors. He played a lead role in designing the Chevrolet Corvette, Stingray and Camaro – which featured in the “Transformers” movies – and Bentley’s Bentayga SUV.

    “CLEAN SHEET”

Lee told Reuters the ex-Bentley design duo aim to make Genesis a recognized global premium brand as new disruptive technologies such as autonomous, connected cars and alternative propulsion systems alter the auto design landscape.

“Because of these technologies, the car industry is about to hit a crossroads. The future is truly open,” he said. “It’s difficult to say if all the prestigious brands today will still be around in 10-20 years.”

Lee, who says he was first approached by Hyundai two years ago, said he and Donckerwolke plan to design Genesis cars from a “clean sheet of paper”.

“For decades, luxury brands such as Bentley, Aston Martin and Maserati have been about possession,” he said. “In the future, as disruptive technologies kick in, luxury is going to be about experience. People are going to look for a special experience rather than something special to own.”

    GLOBAL LEGACY

As “mobility on demand” – the once futuristic concept of calling up a robot-car by smartphone – takes hold, Hyundai predicts many households in the United States, its biggest market, will no longer own two, or three cars, but spend more on one car, said the person close to the company.

“That means upscale cars,” he said, adding “profitability-wise, the luxury segment is much better, too.”

That fits with Chung’s aspiration to not just drive the Genesis brand but elevate the Hyundai name to an elite global corporate league alongside the likes of BMW, Boeing and Apple.

“That’s his legacy. ES (Euisun) wants to make Hyundai a truly globally recognized and respected company,” the person said.

Chung was involved with hiring both Donckerwolke and Lee, as well as Manfred Fitzgerald, former brand and design director at Lamborghini who was named earlier this year as head of Genesis, said another person with knowledge of the matter.

  • Davidoff & Sparkle Roll seal huge China deal

Davidoff & Sparkle Roll seal huge China deal

Oettinger Davidoff AG and the Hong Kong listed Sparkle Roll Group have rubber stamped their earlier agreed multi-million dollar Davidoff cigar and cigar accessories joint venture for China, with Davidoff taking 49.9 % and Sparkle Roll 50.1%.

While the framework agreement was announced several months ago, the development is nevertheless a huge commitment for both companies with Oettinger Davidoff agreeing to subscribe for 499 Shares in the New Joint Venture Company, representing 49.9% of the total number of the issued shares at a total purchase price of US$1.497m (equivalent to approximately HK11.677m).

For its part, Sparkle Roll/CGL is subscribing for 501 Shares representing the 50.1% balance at a total purchase price of US$1.503m (equivalent to approximately HK$11.723m).

Commenting on the landmark arrangement, Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard (left), CEO and Board member of Oettinger Davidoff AG, said: “The signing of this Joint Venture agreement heralds a new era in our relationship with Sparkle Roll and in our commitment to building the Davidoff business in China.

“This market represents the single largest business opportunity for Davidoff in our time and I am convinced that with this new Joint Venture we will be able to exploit that opportunity to its fullest.”

Mr. Tong Kai Lap, Chairman of Sparkle Roll, said: “Since the individual customers of Sparkle Roll’s existing principal business in top-tier automobiles are predominantly people with high spending power, the Joint Venture will create synergies for both companies. The end products in both businesses are perceived to have the same target customer group and market positioning in the premium segment.”

The Sparkle Roll Group’s business reads like the Who’s Who of the luxury goods industry, with its main business principally engaged in the trading of top-tier automobiles, high-end watches and jewellery, fine wines and other branded consumer goods in the PRC, Hong Kong, Macau and Malaysia. It also operates dealerships for top-tier automobiles such as Bentley in Beijing and Tianjin, Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce in Beijing.

The original announcement relating to this deal was made earlier this year and referred to in Davidoff’s results statement earlier this year.

The first part of a comprehensive interview with Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard also appeared in the September issue of TRBusiness, with the second due to appear in the October TFWA show issue in a few week’s time.
