  • US Dollar Climbs Against Vietnamese Dong in Black Market Amid Global Uncertainties

US Dollar Climbs Against Vietnamese Dong in Black Market Amid Global Uncertainties

The U.S. dollar saw an incremental increase against the Vietnamese dong in the unofficial market on Thursday morning. Independent exchange centers traded the U.S. dollar 0.19% higher, at VND26,380, while Vietcombank maintained its rate at VND26,500.

    Global Currency Trends

Globally, the U.S. dollar stabilized largely on Thursday. The escalating U.S.-Iran tensions fostered a sense of uncertainty among investors, bolstering the demand for the U.S. dollar, a widely recognized safe-haven currency. Concurrently, the Japanese yen hovered around a 40-year low, with no imminent signs of recovery.

The dollar index, a metric that juxtaposes the U.S. dollar against a selection of currencies including the yen and the euro, slightly declined by 0.06%, settling at 101.05. The increasing geopolitical tensions between Washington and Tehran have triggered a rise in oil prices, intensifying inflation fears. This in turn has facilitated an appreciable gain for the greenback.

Meanwhile, the euro experienced a minor increase of 0.07%, closing at $1.1418. The European Central Bank (ECB) is scheduled for a meeting later on Thursday. It is expected that the ECB will maintain its interest rates, but will leave room for a potential rate hike in September. This anticipated move is in response to the recent surge in energy prices, which threatens to exert additional inflationary pressure.

  • US Dollar Takes a Dive Against Vietnamese Dong in Black Market Amid Global Weakness

US Dollar Takes a Dive Against Vietnamese Dong in Black Market Amid Global Weakness

Over the weekend, the U.S. dollar experienced a dip against the Vietnamese dong on the informal currency exchange market. The dollar was traded 0.34% lower at VND26,560 at unofficial exchange points, while Vietcombank maintained its rate at VND26,463.

    Global Dollar Weakness

On the global stage, the U.S. dollar was on track for its most significant weekly loss in 12 weeks. This downturn resulted from a lukewarm U.S. employment report, which led to diminished market predictions for an imminent Federal Reserve interest rate increase. This development brought some relief to the Japanese yen.

The overall weakening of the dollar also boosted the euro, which reached $1.1440, following a nearly two-week high the previous day. The euro ended the week up by 0.5%. Simultaneously, the British pound solidified its position to $1.3352, marking a 1.1% weekly gain, its highest in almost three months.

    Impact on other Currencies

The increased strength of the dollar also brought relief to the Japanese yen. The yen increased to less than 161 per dollar, a welcome shift after the sudden increase on Thursday, which took the currency from a 40-year low of 162.84 to 161.25. Despite this, market uncertainty surrounding potential intervention risks persisted.

The dollar’s decline came in response to slowed U.S. job growth in June. Further, the reduced payroll gains for the preceding two months triggered traders to scale back on predictions of a near-term Federal Reserve rate increase.

    Questions & Answers

What triggered the U.S. dollar’s dip against the Vietnamese dong?
The dip was triggered by the overall weakening of the U.S. dollar on the global stage, which was a result of a lukewarm U.S. employment report diminishing market predictions for an immediate Federal Reserve interest rate increase.

How did the global dollar weakness impact the euro and the British pound?
The weakness of the U.S. dollar led to the strengthening of the euro, reaching $1.1440, and the solidifying of the British pound’s position at $1.3352.

What caused the shift in the strength of the Japanese yen?
The shift in the Japanese yen was due to the overall increase in the strength of the U.S. dollar, which took the yen from a 40-year low of 162.84 to less than 161 per dollar.

As global markets reacted positively to a newly brokered tariff agreement between the U.S. and China—a development aimed at alleviating tensions in their trade relationship—the dollar maintained its strong position. • Coloring foods black, a growing trend in Vietnam

Coloring foods black, a growing trend in Vietnam

Whether its bread, ice cream, or moon cake, Vietnamese are increasingly preferring it to be black-colored. Tuan, owner of a bakery in northern Ha Long Town, sells 300-700 black banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich) a day for VND25,000-45,000 ($1.08-1.94) each.

He makes the bread using flour and bamboo charcoal, which is believed to be a natural detoxifier though there has been no formal research into it.

He said many people come to buy the sandwiches for their unusual look and taste.

Similar black sandwiches are also sold in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, and Dong Nai in the south. Hieu in HCMC’s Phu Nhuan District sells over 1,000 of them a day. A friend had suggested the idea to him after returning from Japan, where bamboo charcoal is a popular ingredient in food and beauty products.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival this year, on October 1, black charcoal moon cake was a sought-after item. Hang in HCMC’s District 3 sold out all 3,000 of her black moon cakes a week before the festival though they cost more than regular cakes.

But there are concerns about the use of imported bamboo charcoal without quality standards, he said. Bamboo charcoal is also used in ice cream. Mai Truong Giang, the owner of fried chicken chain Otoke Chicken which sells this product, said bamboo charcoal has been used in food in many countries for long to create an unusual look.

Coloring food black could just be a fad and fade away after a while, he speculated.

  • Suzuki Ertiga Black Edition Just Launched In The Philippines

Suzuki Ertiga Black Edition Just Launched In The Philippines

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga was introduced in India last year and is sold in a number of markets including several South East Asian countries. The new generation model is being offered with several upgrades overseas and latest one is a new special edition model for Philippines. The Suzuki Ertiga Black Edition brings an all-black interior to the MPV without making any changes to the exterior of the vehicle, which can otherwise be seen on the special edition Ertiga GT set for debut later this month in Indonesia.

Coming to the changes on the Suzuki Ertiga Black edition for Philippines, the model gets the all-black treatment in place of the beige themed cabin on the standard version. The automaker has also used darker wood trims on the dashboard to match the overall theme, while the plastics inside the cabin are black as well. The wood finished multi-function steering wheel continues to be on offer. The car continues to be offered as a seven-seater with the 2+3+3 layout. Internationally, the Ertiga misses out on the SmartPlay Studio infotainment system but does get a 10-inch touchscreen display with with Bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity.

Under the hood, the Philippines-spec Suzuki Ertiga draws powered from the 1.5-litre K-Series petrol engine tuned for 103 bhp, and is paired with a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine is also offered in India alongside the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel motor with 89 on tap. That said, reports suggest that the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga for India is all set to get the new Suzuki-developed 1.5-litre diesel engine under the hood. The new motor will meet the stringent BS6 norms and will effectively replace the 1.3 Fiat-sourced mill across the Maruti Suzuki vehicle range. There are also reports of a more premium six-seater version coming later this year and could be sold exclusively via the Nexa outlets.

  • Duck-Snack Maker Flounders with Weak IPO Pricing

Duck-Snack Maker Flounders with Weak IPO Pricing

One of the year’s quirkier IPOs had its wings clipped after investors’ appetites failed to take off for one of China’s leading makers of popular snack foods made from duck parts.

After making a splash with its original listing announcement, Zhou Hei Ya International Holdings Co. Ltd. couldn’t impress investors even with a growth story that includes annual profit and revenue growth of more than 40% annually between 2013 and 2015.

The offering in Hong Kong was ultimately priced at HK$5.88 (76 U.S. cents) per share, or near the bottom of its previously announced range of HK$5.80 to HK$7.80.

Hong Kong retail investors, who normally flock to IPOs for famous brands, gave the offering an especially cold shoulder. Of the 42.4 million shares available for those mom-and-pop buyers, representing 10% of the total offering, only 81% were actually sold.

That forced Zhou Hei Ya, whose name means “Zhou Family Black Duck,” to sell about 8 million orphaned shares from that portion of the allotment to institutional investors instead. Zhou Hei Ya raised HK$2.37 billion from the offering, far short of its original target of up to HK$3.3 billion.

A big name in the domestic snack-food market, Zhou Hei Ya hopes to use the funds to expand internationally. Started in 2002 as a family-run snack stall in the interior city of Wuhan, Hubei province, the company’s products are now sold in 750 retail stores across 40 Chinese cities. In addition to its namesake duck necks, its products also include local delicacies like duck feet, braised peanuts and duck tongue.

Braised snacks have a long history in China, where they are commonly sold at roadside stalls. But they are increasingly being marketed by major snack brands. Meat, tofu and other ingredients are simmered for hours in a rich savory broth, and many regions have their own special seasoning blends.
