Extreme Networks to buy Brocade’s data center assets

Software-driven networking vendor Extreme Networks has arranged to buy the data center networking business of Brocade for $55 million.

Extreme Networks has entered an agreement with Broadcom – which itself arranged to purchase Brocade in November last year for around $5.9 billion – to purchase Brocade’s data center switching, routing and analytics business.

The acquisition is expected to close within 60 days after the closing of Broadcom’s acquisition of Brocade, which is due during the quarter ending in July.

Extreme Networks said it expects the purchase to be earnings accretive by fiscal 2018 and to generate over $230 million in new annualized revenue.

“The addition of Brocade’s data center networking business significantly strengthens our position in the expanding high-end data center market and reinforces our strategy of delivering software-driven networking solutions focused on enterprise customers,” Extreme Networks president and CEO Ed Meyercord said.

“Today’s announcement, coupled with our recent announcements regarding our position as the stalking horse bidder of Avaya’s networking business and the successful completion of the integration of Zebra’s wireless LAN business, along with Extreme’s organic investments in R&D, will result in a state of the art, newly-refreshed portfolio of enterprise solutions for our customers.”

Broadcom announced an intention to divest Brocade’s IP networking business as part of its planned acquisition of the vendor, focusing on the company’s remaining fiber channel storage area network business.

Brocade migrates BookMyShow to new IP network

Brocade has migrated BookMyShow, India’s largest online entertainment ticketing brand, to a new IP network optimized for application performance.

The deployment has further enhanced the booking experience offered by BookMyShow by enabling it to better handle increasing peak demands and roll out new services on the fly. The solution also provides it with a flexible foundation to continue its rapid market penetration in India.

Alongside online movie ticketing, BookMyShow also offers non-movie ticketing for plays, sports, and live events, leading to a tremendous increase in its user base and the amount of data traffic across its platforms.

To meet the growing scale of its operations, BookMyShow has been constantly upgrading its technologies and infrastructure at the back end to continue offering a seamless booking experience, especially during the release of blockbuster films and bookings for key non-movie events.

“People in India are increasingly realizing the convenience and benefits associated with online ticketing,” said Viraj Patel, VP of Technology, BookMyShow.

“This, coupled with increasing smartphone and mobile Internet penetration, is resulting in more users experiencing BookMyShow. Over 70% of our transactions are already through mobile. This makes it imperative for BookMyShow to pre-empt demand and traffic spikes to ensure that its infrastructure can continue delivering a consistent and seamless booking experience.”

“Brocade has designed a solution optimized to our requirements, thereby preventing the surfacing of any new bottlenecks and, at the same time, enabling us to scale on demand while ensuring 100 percent uptime.”

“Delivering 24×7 e-commerce availability is always a challenge and online ticketing, with its spikes in demand, takes things to an extreme,” said Edgar Dias, senior regional director for Brocade India.

“With Brocade VDX 6740 switches and Brocade VCS Fabric technology, we have been able to provide BookMyShow with a network infrastructure that enables a more automated and dynamic operating model, allowing the data center as a whole to respond rapidly to changing patterns of demand. At the same time, this network architecture can be scaled to handle massive growth in online ticket sales in the coming years.”

Broadcom to acquire Brocade for $5.9b

Chipmaker Broadcom has announced a $5.9 billion deal to acquire network equipment manufacturer Brocade to enhance its position in the storage networking business.

The acquisition, which involves $5.5 billion in cash and the assumption of $400,000 in debt, includes the assets of Ruckus Wireless, which Brocade purchased for $1.2 billion earlier this year.

But Broadcom has announced that it intends to divest Brocade’s IP networking business, which includes wireless and campus networking, data center switching and routing, as well as SDN. This represents a substantial part of the Ruckus Wireless assets.

Broadcom anticipates that Brocade’s remaining fiber channel storage area network (FC SAN) business will contribute around $900 million to the company’s ebitda for its 2018 fiscal year.

“This strategic acquisition enhances Broadcom’s position as one of the leading providers of enterprise storage connectivity solutions to OEM customers,” Broadcom president and CEO Hock Tan said.

“With deep expertise in mission-critical storage networking, Brocade increases our ability to address the evolving needs of our OEM customers. In addition, we are confident that we will find a great home for Brocade’s valuable IP networking business that will best position that business for its next phase of growth.”

Viavi, Brocade readying subscriber data analytics solution

Viavi Solutions and Brocade are developing a joint solution that enables mobile operators to capture and analyze subscriber data to quickly resolve quality of experience (QoE) issues.

Viavi’s xSIGHT Targeted Subscriber Search (TSS) leverages the Brocade Packet Broker and Brocade Session Director to filter and deliver targeted subscriber traffic so only the data required to resolve customer experience problems is forwarded to xSIGHT TSS. In addition to significantly reducing resolution time for QoE issues, the solution enables mobile operators to open up opportunities for new value-added services.

The joint solution is in production at a US Tier-1 mobile operator to help provide better QoE to their subscribers and enable new premium services.

The xSIGHT TSS and Brocade Packet Broker target specific subscribers—for example, VIPs or corporate customers covered by SLAs—and capture correlated control and user plane traffic, at a scale applicable to a Tier-1 mobile network.

By reducing the average time spent gathering end-to-end subscriber traces from several hours to minutes, xSIGHT TSS and the Brocade Packet Broker may save mobile carriers up to tens of thousands of labor hours per year.

xSIGHT is Viavi’s customer experience assurance portfolio including an analytics platform fed by agents distributed throughout the network. The agents passively analyze traffic in real time, build network and application performance metrics and selectively store traffic for troubleshooting purposes. xSIGHT TSS is an agent which can be programmed to capture all control and user plane data for targeted subscribers defined by the service provider.
