    Crypto Finance Opens Singapore Branch

    Swiss digital investment specialist Crypto Finance has opened a branch in the Lion City. The company sees itself as a provider of services to the banking industry.

    Crypto Finance’s representative office in Singapore opens this month and will be led by the head of Asia, Alisher Tashpulatov, according to a media release on Wednesday.

    Tashpulatov previously worked in the crypto fund business of the firm and was involved in getting a license from the Swiss regulator as a crypto wealth manager. He then opened its Hong Kong office. He is being backed up by the crypto finance team, which has several team members with Asian experience, for instance, CEO and founder Jan Brzezek.

    The Zurich-based group will serve the demand for digital asset products and services, and attempt to bridge the gap between traditional banks and the crypto market.

    I believe that the Singaporean and Swiss business environment and orientation share many characteristics, including respect for diverse cultures and a work ethic that values merit, excellence, self-reliance, and hard work. The two countries share a great rapport, and it is almost intuitive for us as a Swiss business to establish ourselves in a like-minded and innovative country like Singapore, Tashpulatov said.

    Having spent years conquering new frontiers and climbing new peaks within the Swiss market, I am now happy to make a transition into a new, yet familiar, land, he added.

    Crypto Finance’s current activities in Singapore are focused on the areas of business that do not require regulatory supervision, and the firm plans to launch best-fit models of its offering in other Asian business hubs in the near future.

    BT chooses Juniper Networks to unify services for cloud initiative and 5G future

    BT will develop its 5G capabilities further after striking an agreement with Juniper Networks. The network developer will support BT in the delivery of its Network Cloud infrastructure initiative, which will allow various lines of its business on a single platform.

    A more flexible, virtualised network infrastructure will allow the biggest British telco to create new converged services for mobile, Wi-Fi, and fixed networks.

    It will also bring about a range of new applications that evolve services such as internet access, TV and business network functions.

    After EE, BT’s subsidiary, launched 5G in the UK on May 22, Guillaume Sampic, enterprise strategy director at BT, said that the benefits of 5G to businesses in terms of latency, speed, reliability and volume will “be a step change” from 4G.

    Commenting on the Juniper Networks agreement, Neil McRae, chief architect at BT, said: “BT is a global leader in ultrafast services, with growing demand from our ultrafast broadband services and ultrafast 5G services and has the perfect opportunity to combine several discrete networks into a unified, automated infrastructure.

    “This move to a single cloud-driven network infrastructure will enable BT to offer a wider range of services, faster and more efficiently to customers in the UK and around the world.”

    The Network Cloud infrastructure initiative will integrate seamlessly with BT’s other partners and solutions to move it closer to an automated and programmable network, which will benefit services such as ISP, TV, IT and its voice, mobile core, radio access and internal applications.

    BT is investing in a range of Juniper solutions across various tenants within the BT network, including a dynamic end-to-end networking policy and control for telco cloud workloads using Contrail Networking, cloud operations management using AppFormix and a scalable and flexible spine and leaf underlay fabric using the QFX Series.

    “As a renowned global service provider, BT is a shining example of how to evolve networks to become more agile,” said Bikash Koley, CTO, Juniper Networks. “By leveraging the ‘beach-front property’ it has in central offices around the globe, BT can optimise the business value that 5G’s bandwidth and connectivity brings.

    BT signs three-year deal with NATO

    The UK’s BT has extended its relationship with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military alliance, announcing a contract to support the alliance’s global operations.

    Under the three year contract with NATO’s Communications and Information Agency (NCI), valued at €5.9 million ($6.64 million), BT will provide support services to more than 70 NATO locations internationally.

    This will include sites spread across the Alliance’s 29 member countries, as well as other locations.

    “Digital transformation is a strategic driver for multinational organisations. Like many of our global customers, NATO faces a dynamic operational landscape and looks to harness the latest digital tools and technologies to enhance its performance,” BT CEO of Global Services Bas Burger said.

    “With our global secure network and expertise as a trusted supplier to governments, international agencies and multinationals, BT is well placed to support NATO in an increasingly digital world.”

    The NATO alliance consists of 29 member states from North America and Europe.

    Blockchain used for inter-carrier settlements in PoC trial

    Members of the International Telecoms Week (ITW) Global Leaders’ Forum (GLF), including PCCW Global and Telstra, have completed a proof of concept trial demonstrating how blockchain technology can transform inter-carrier settlement by streamlining complex transactions.

    The two operators as well as Colt Technology ServicesBTOrange and Telefonica, demonstrated the viability of a platform capable of settling voice transactions between operators within minutes rather than hours.

    The demonstration represents the first proof of concept blockchain trial to involve a multi-lateral series of relationships within the wholesale telecoms sector. It was the latest in a series of trials carried out by CLF members in collaboration with technology partner Clear, a blockchain specialist.

    The proof of concept was able to demonstrate that live data feeds could be successfully input into a distributed ledger, enabling traffic to be automatically verified and settled between two carriers.

    In a statement, the GLF said it is now reviewing its options over a potential governance structure to further develop the technology and implement a solution for the entire industry.

    “This latest PoC signals nothing less than the future of telecoms, whereby intensive manual practices can be securely automated across the wholesale ecosystem,” Colt Technology Services CEO Carl Grivner said.

    “This is a major step forward by Colt and its partners, meaning we can now invest further resources into driving both our and our customers’ businesses forward using the power of blockchain.”

    BT unveils new SD-WAN service for large enterprises

    BT has launched BT Agile Connect, a new software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) service that aimed at helping large enterprises with their digital transformation.

    The new service, powered by technologies from BT and Nuage Networks, uses software-defined networking (SDN) to determine the most effective route for traffic across a customer’s wide area network.

    According to BT, Agile Connect will give large enterprises greater control and insights over their infrastructure and traffic flows, allowing much faster and simpler set up of new sites with reduced network complexity and lower costs.

    Customers are able to prioritize applications or manage use of access services via an interactive portal. They also gain an improved visibility of application performance. Changes are implemented centrally without the need for expensive local technical support, the UK operator said.

    The new SD-WAN product runs on BT’s global wholesale network infrastructure, with Agile Connect equipment currently live within the networks of several large global organizations.  BT is now rolling the product out for new and existing customers as part of its Dynamic Network Services program.

    Agile Connect includes a BT pre-built controller infrastructure hosted on the internet and on BT’s multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network. It also uses BT pre-built MPLS Internet gateways to offer simple cloud-based connectivity between internet-connected and MPLS-connected sites.

    “Together, these features save customers from having to undertake time-consuming and costly design, delivery and on-going maintenance of controllers, interconnection gateways, security and monitoring systems critical to the performance of a SD-WAN,” BT said.

    Agile Connect is delivered as a single box located on the edge of their network, with further services added as additional devices. In the future, Agile Connect will support virtual network functions (VNFs), with new services deployed virtually to the Agile Connect device, removing the need to install multiple boxes, BT said.

    BT opens cyber security R&D hub in Sydney

    BT and the New South Wales government in Australia have announced the opening of a new global cyber security research and development hub in Sydney.

    The hub is an expansion of BT’s existing security operations center (SOC) in the city and will create up to 172 new highly skilled jobs over five years.

    The hub is BT’s first cyber security R&D facility outside of the United Kingdom and will employ highly qualified cyber security specialists.

    The areas of expertise in the new hub will include cyber security, machine learning, data science analytics and visualization, big data engineering, cloud computing, data networking, and the full life cycle of software engineering. The center will also offer job opportunities for 38 graduates with relevant degrees.

    The expanded operations center and R&D hub is part of BT’s global network of 14 Security Operations Centers, providing cyber security service for global customers in 180 countries around the world. BT is recognised by industry analysts as one of the world’s leaders in managed security services on a global level as well as in the Asia Pacific region specifically.

    Security solutions developed and supported out of the Sydney hub will be deployed for customers locally and globally. The hub will also host cyber security systems integration and services teams as well as BT’s newly created role of chief global engineer for cyber product development.

    Minister for Innovation Matt Kean said the NSW Government-backed Jobs for NSW would provide an A$1.67 million ($1.33 million) grant to BT.

    “This cutting edge operation will help keep Australia’s best cyber security talent here in NSW while nurturing our next generation of specialists to ensure we remain a regional leader in this fast growing industry.

    “As well as creating 172 jobs, including 38 jobs for skilled graduates over the next five years, BT will also make an A$2 million investment in capital infrastructure and a further multi-million dollar investment to employ cyber security specialists at the hub.”

    Mark Hughes, CEO BT Security, said: “We are thrilled at this exciting new opportunity to tap into local cyber security skills. Never before has cyber security been more important and we see potential for growth in New South Wales, Australia and further afield. The hub will be a cornerstone of our global cyber security capabilities and help us stay ahead in this fast moving space.”

    BT, Dell EMC explore new way to manage traffic

    BT and Dell EMC have entered a research collaboration  dedicated to exploring a new way of managing network traffic using agile, programmable telecoms networks.

    The proof-of-concept trial, which is taking place at the BT Labs in Adastral Park, Suffolk, will explore how disaggregated switching can create flexible networks which are more responsive to customer needs by using standard open network switches commonly found in data centers, coupled with specialist switching software.

    In contrast to the traditional integrated network switches currently used by operators and enterprises around the world, disaggregated switching uses merchant silicon based switching systems combined with either commercially available or open source system software.

    This represents a significant shift architecturally, based on server-like principles to the delivery of dynamic network services over fixed-line and wireless networks.

    BT is evaluating the performance of Dell EMC disaggregated switches against traditional integrated switching hardware to test the performance, economics and programmability of this new, virtualized approach, which is important as customers increasingly require more flexible, agile networks.

    Disaggregated switches have several potential advantages over traditional network switches, as they can be managed flexibly using Netconf protocol and YANG models. This makes the entire system inherently programmable and allows the switches to be operated in tandem to provide new network services or make configuration changes rapidly.

    BT will work with Dell EMC to look at a number of potential use cases as part of the trial as the company evolves its network strategy to maximize the benefits of SDN (software-defined networks), NFV (network functions virtualization) and programmable silicon. These include the instant activation of Ethernet circuits from a third party (such as an enterprise), and the ability of the system to deliver real-time network operational data.

    BT has launched a new security service that uses technology from IoT security company ForeScout Technologies to  provide real-time agentless visibility and control of devices connected to corporate networks.

    BT Managed Endpoint Access Security can support managed, unmanaged, private, BYOD and IoT devices.

    ForeScout’s agentless approach to network security is designed to real-time discovery, classification, assessment and monitoring of devices allowing end-customers to see what is on their network, from campus to cloud, and to securely manage it.

    ForeScout can also orchestrate a policy-based security enforcement operation, with leading IT and security management products to automate security workflows and accelerate threat response.

    “By bringing ForeScout’s technology into our portfolio, we extend our ability to protect organizations against the latest threats through improved visibility and control,” BT vice president for security David Stark said.

    “Whether it’s protecting a head office or a branch site, adding the ability to monitor just about any device connected to the network offers a much required additional layer of security to companies moving into the digital world.”

    The service will be available globally from June 2017.

    BT has announced the launch of “BT Connect Intelligence InfoVista-as-a-Service,” a new application performance management solution delivered from the cloud.

    The company said the new solution adds a scalable “as-a-service” flexible pricing model to BT’s applications performance management portfolio, BT Connect Intelligence.

    It delivers InfoVista’s Ipanema technology via BT’s cloud infrastructure, integrating all the capabilities organizations need to orchestrate the performance of business applications running across their network, BT said.

    BT Connect Intelligence InfoVista-as-a-Service gives enterprises greater flexibility and cost control as they manage the experience of users accessing business-critical applications across the corporate network, regardless of how they connect and how much bandwidth they use. It also gives enterprises a more predictable view of costs as its user-based pricing is not affected by the growth of network bandwidth.

    The new solution is available globally to both BT’s existing network customers and organizations using other network providers.

    The software underpinning the solution is delivered from BT’s cloud infrastructure and its management is now possible over the Internet.

    BT completes first stage Michelin deployment

    BT has delivered the first milestones of its global enterprise networking contract with tyre manufacturer Michelin.

    The contract was signed late 2016 and is now in deployment phase. It is designed to transform Michelin’s global network infrastructure and provide all the advantages of the latest network, unified communications and security technologies.

    Under the terms of the five-year contract, BT is to provide Michelin with managed network services for 216 sites in 43 countries across all continents.

    Managed from France, the services covered by the contract are set to play an important role in delivering Michelin’s strategic IT transformation program.

    Agnès Mauffrey, Group CIO of Michelin, said they are driven to look for new ideas to improve the performance of our products and the efficiency of our business.

    “We see a great match between these requirements and BT’s global reach, local in-country capabilities and strong global portfolio,” said Mauffrey.

    “Our aim is to create a platform for digital innovation which will give our people around the world high performance access to cloud-based services, allowing them to collaborate more effectively, she said. “This is being done in a secure and reliable environment over which we have complete control.”

    Luis Alvarez, CEO of BT’s global services division, said BT will support Michelin globally through a dedicated network operations centre and provide centralised network management.

    The contract includes services from several areas of the BT portfolio: BT Connect (network services), BT Security (security services), BT One (unified communications and collaboration services) and BT Advise (professional services).

    “We understand how important digital is to our customers and how cloud services integration can contribute to their success,” said Alvarez. “In the midst of this digital revolution, we also make sure that organizations retain control of their IT, so that the performance, reliability and security of their cloud applications meet all their business requirements.”

    BT is linking up the world’s five main foreign exchange locations to help boost the competitiveness of its global financial industry customers.

    The company is now offering BT Radianz FX express, which provides dedicated high-speed links between financial hubs in Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, the UK and the US. The five hubs are involved in almost 77% of the world’s forex trading, according to the 2016 BIS Triennial Central Bank Survey.

    The new Radianz FX express service claims to offer low-latency and cost-effective, fully managed connectivity that will give traders faster access to market data across the five locations, while making it easier for them to execute trades.

    Radianz FX express links directly into the five key third-party global data centers in the forex trading world. These data centers were selected because each of the locations hosts the IT infrastructure of significant clusters of the forex trading community.

    “Foreign exchange is the largest asset class by value traded globally.  An average of US $5.1 trillion is traded on FX markets every day,” BT VP of global industry practices Hubertus von Roenne said.

    Huawei forges 5G research partnership with BT

    Huawei has announced a partnership with UK-based operator BT to conduct joint research into potential new 5G applications.

    The companies will work at the BT Labs in Ipswich and other locations in the UK to explore aspects of 5G including future network architecture, a new air interface between devices and base stations, network slicing to proportion resources for specific services, 5G IoT applications and security technologies.

    The partners said they hope that the research will drive the development and industry-wide standardization of 5G technologies.

    “[Working with BT] we can explore the potential of 5G networks and analyze how this vital technology can best be delivered,” Huawei rotating CEO Ken Hu said.

    “The partnership also demonstrates Huawei’s continued commitment to partnering with world-leading business and academic organizations in the UK to further research and development. We have operated in the UK for 15 years and we look forward to continuing to help build a better connected UK in partnership with BT.”

    Huawei and BT have been collaborating on telecommunications R&D for 11 years. Most recently, the companies announced breakthroughs including a 3Tbps data transfer over BT’s core network, as well as research into 40Gbps speeds on the Openreach access network.

    BT, DCI Indonesia, and Equinix, a DCI partner, announced that they are working together to provide private cloud infrastructure in Indonesia.

    The companies said by using BT’s private cloud solutions as part of the BT Compute portfolio, enterprises active in Indonesia will now be able to reap the full benefits of the cloud to realise their digital transformation, launch new services more rapidly, mitigate risks, reduce costs and focus on business growth.

    The combination of BT and DCI data center capabilities also enables international businesses expanding into Indonesia to accelerate market entry, as they no longer need to invest time and resources to set up their own data center infrastructure and deploy business critical applications.

    Ron Totton, Southeast Asia managing director, BT, said, “Indonesia is a promising market for BT, where demand for private cloud and data center services is growing fast, especially in sectors such as finance, energy, and the telecom industry.”

    DCI Indonesia is the only tier-IV data center service provider in Indonesia providing the most stringent service level agreement of 99.999% uptime through dual configuration infrastructure that ensures redundancy.

    BT to build cloud infrastructure for Randstad

    HR services provider Randstad Group has contracted BT to build a new global IT infrastructure providing cloud connectivity to more than 3,500 sites worldwide.

    The network will connect 37 countries in Europe, North- and South-America, Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

    BT will consolidate, centralize and standardize Randstad’s network infrastructure, currently sourced from multiple domestic and regional providers. The new infrastructure uses BT’s IP Connect and Internet Connect services to combine the reliability and security of IP-based VPNs with the flexibility of internet connections.

    The network infrastructure will use BT’s Cloud Connect service to deliver high performance connectivity to multiple Amazon Web Services locations. In addition, BT One Cloud will deliver cloud-based voice services for Randstad’s 33,000 employees, hosted from data centers in Europe, North America and Asia. BT will also standardize Randstad’s in-office – fixed and wireless – networks.

    “We were looking for a global network and cloud services integration partner to help us gain more control over our network estate, increase efficiencies, maximize the benefits of the cloud and help accelerate our digital transformation,” said Bernardo Payet, general manager of Randstad Global IT Solutions.

    BT has announced the availability of BT Compute for Microsoft Azure, a new service that allows BT customers to order Microsoft Azure alongside BT’s own cloud services.

    The service enables customers to build hybrid cloud infrastructure with a single service wrap, contract and on a single bill.

    BT customers already use private and public cloud services – also known as hybrid cloud – hosted in BT Compute’s 48 data center globally.

    With BT acting as their cloud services integrator, and by using CMS, customers can manage their cloud services end-to-end from data center to network, maximizing the benefits and minimizing the complexity, risk and costs of moving to the cloud. Using local delivery with global scale allows BT to meet the evolving needs of organizations for cloud services and at the same time address the complexity of regulatory requirements.

    Integration of Microsoft Azure into the CMS expands the choice for BT customers. They gain access to Microsoft’s rapidly growing collection of integrated cloud services, including Infrastructure as a Service (Iaas) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) computing capabilities.

    Neil Lock, VP BT compute at global services, said “Hybrid cloud has become a major focus for many large enterprises as they choose a variety of cloud solutions to suit their complex business needs.”

    “In fact, BT research suggests that 90% of its largest customers expect to be using a combination of public and private cloud in the next few years. Through our relationship with Microsoft, customers can build their own hybrid cloud environment and enjoy the benefits of Azure whilst removing costly management concerns from the equation,” the executive said.

    The service will be available during the final quarter of the year.
