For more than 21 years, U.S. based personalized experiential toy retail brand Build-A-Bear has been sharing hearts and bear hugs globally, and after a long wait, Tablez – the retail arm of LuLu Group International, has launched the first Build-A-Bear store in India, at Toys”R”Us, Phoenix Marketcity in Bangalore. Build-A-Bear is a global customized stuffed-animal retail entertainment brand that aims to reach as many as 9 million households in the top 15 cities in India by 2025. Besides standalone stores, shop-in-shop formats of Build-A-Bear would be launched within Toys“R”Us.

On this special occasion, Adeeb Ahamed, MD, Tablez said: “The Build-A-Bear concept is a one-of-a-kind retail experience, and we are thrilled to open the first store in Bangalore. Build-A-Bear is synonymous with creativity and novelty for children. I am sure that each child that enters our store will cherish their experience and leave with an indelible memory.

“From standalone stores to shop-in-shop formats, Build-A-Bear is ready to reach out to families and kids in India and help loved ones create memories and spend more time together. We plan to open 20 standalone stores of Build-A-Bear across key cities in India over the next 10 years, along with shop-in-shop formats across all our Toys”R”Us stores as well.”

Dorrie Krueger, Build-A-Bear Workshop Chief Strategy Officer, said, “Together with Tablez India, we are excited to open the first Build-A-Bear store in India and continue to expand into this important global market. We look forward to introducing the Build-A-Bear brand and sharing the joy of making a new furry friend with millions of families.”

Build-A-Bear is a global brand that kids love and parents trust for fantastic family experiences. The ‘Choose Me’ wall at every Build-A-Bear store is where the empowerment journey begins as each guest chooses an unstuffed animal to bring to life. Accessories give customers the freedom to customize their creation. The heart ceremony is where one can add special wishes to their friend. During the stuffing process, a heart is placed in the bear along with special wishes, and the guest promises to care for their new furry friend once they are given the birth certificate. This signature ceremony brings each stuffed animal to life in a personal way, further ensuring a greater attachment.

Established in 1997, Build-A-Bear has helped millions find their own meaning in a new furry friend. The brand has nearly 500 stores worldwide and more than 180 million furry friends have been made globally in its 21-year history. Build-A-Bear helps guests mark special occasions, start friendships, and inspires people to make their own adventures. At Build-A-Bear, one is empowered to feel that anything is possible.

Further, a Build-A-Bear shop-in-shop format will follow in Vega City Mall, Bangalore; City Centre Mall, Mangalore and Phoenix Marketcity, Pune. Build-A-Bear plans to expand to as many as 65 shop-in-shop format stores and 20 standalone stores in India over the next 10 years.

Build-a-Bear signs expansion deal for Asia

As sales fall, US experiential retailer Build-a-Bear has signed a franchise expansion deal covering China, Hong Kong and Macau.

The new deal – with the local partner not yet revealed – will see the first store in Beijing in December. Hong Kong will follow with timing yet to be confirmed.

At the end of September, Build-a-Bear had 353 company-owned stores, including one at the Shanghai Disney Resort in China. International franchise stores numbered 90 in 11 countries.

With soft mall traffic in the US, both profit and sales fell in the third quarter for the company, which has relaunched its website and is planning to add more non-mall locations.

Profit came in at US$1.4 million for the three months to September 30, while total revenue fell to $82.4 million, down from $83.7 million a year earlier. Consolidated comparable sales decreased 7.4 per cent, while for e-commerce sales the drop was 18.2 per cent.

However, the company says its new web platform is expected to allow for improved performance in the holiday season and lead the way for increased omnichannel capabilities.

Apart from the web transition and unexpected impact from weather, it was estimated total revenue would have been slightly positive, says president/CEO Sharon Price John. Its lapse follows three consecutive years of building profit levels.

Build-A-Bear has been diversifying its portfolio beyond traditional stores, including a partnership with Carnival Cruise Line to introduce its retail/entertainment experience on its ships.

    Build-A-Bear builds back profits

Build-A-Bear Workshop has recorded its third consecutive year of increased profit.

CEO Sharon Price John has attributed the ongoing improvement in the once-challenged children’s experiential workshop concept to initiatives including store remodelling in the new Discovery format, which generated double-digit growth compared to our heritage stores, focusing on key consumer segments and investing in infrastructure.

“We made steady progress toward our stated long-term sales productivity goals as we achieved the highest average transaction value in our history and highest units per transaction since 2008. We remain committed to the ongoing disciplined execution of our strategy while we continue to leverage our powerful brand in order to deliver both sales and profit improvement,” she said.

In the 52 weeks to January 2, 2016, Build-A-Bear achieved total revenues of US$377.7 million, compared to $392.4 million in the previous financial year (which had 53 weeks, hence the higher figure).

Same store sales rose 1 per cent – growth was flat in North America, but increased 4.8 per cent in Europe, and online sales rose 11.8 per cent.

The company’s retail gross margin expanded 150 basis points to 47.1 per cent compared to 45.6 per cent in the previous year. Pre-tax profit  improved 11.7 per cent to $17.9 million.

During 2015, the company closed 20 stores and opened 25 locations, including 11 in its new Discovery format, to end the year with 329 Company-owned stores; 269 in North America and 60 in Europe. The company’s international franchisees ended the year with 77 stores in 11 countries.

In June this year, Build-A-Bear Workshop will open a new store in the new Disneytown retail precinct at the Shanghai Disney Resort in China.a
