    Chery-JLR Launches Freelander 8 in China Starting at 289,900 Yuan

    Chery and Jaguar Land Rover launched the Freelander 8 in China on Thursday, pricing the extended-range electric SUV from 289,900 yuan ($42,750) after incentives. The final entry sticker cuts 40,000 yuan from the pre-sales price announced in late August.

    Buyers can choose between five-seat and six-seat cabin layouts across Pro, Max and Max+ versions, which top out at 379,900 yuan. Six-seat configurations add 10,000 yuan to each trim. A flagship launch edition limited to 1,000 units and priced at 449,900 yuan sold out prior to the official debut.

    Powertrain and charging specs

    The 5.1-metre SUV runs on an 800-volt electrical architecture paired with a 60.3-kilowatt-hour ternary lithium battery from CATL, delivering 310 kilometres of pure electric range under China light-duty vehicle test cycle standards. A fast-charging cycle takes the pack from 20 per cent to 80 per cent in 12 minutes.

    A 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine acts as a dedicated range extender for a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. Output reaches 610 kilowatts (818 horsepower) and 813 Newton-metres of torque, driving the vehicle from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in 4.6 seconds. Standard chassis hardware includes dual-chamber air suspension, continuously variable dampers, and rear-wheel steering that delivers a 5.15-metre turning radius.

    Software and export plans

    Cabin systems operate on Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 chips alongside a 46.3-inch 8K display and Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 5 driver-assistance platform. Higher trims add multi-channel roof LiDAR hardware for advanced automated navigation.

    Foreign automakers in China have steadily lost market share to domestic extended-range producers such as Li Auto and Seres. By turning JLR’s legacy Freelander badge into an electric sub-brand built on Chery platforms and Huawei software, the joint venture is attempting to hold premium territory without relying entirely on British engineering.

    Chery-JLR plans to introduce six Freelander models over the next five years. Initial exports start between late 2026 and early 2027, led by left-hand-drive shipments to the Middle East.

    Epicland, the premium electric vehicle marque jointly developed by Dongfeng Motor and Huawei, has begun preliminary research into adding battery-swap capability to its upcoming second production model.

    The study marks the first time a brand inside Huawei’s automotive ecosystem has explored swappable battery architecture to lower retail costs and accelerate vehicle charging times.

    No final decision has been taken on whether Epicland will build its own proprietary stations or plug into a third-party public network. The brand opened pre-sales for its debut vehicle, the six-seat X9 extended-range SUV, on August 18 with prices starting from 299,800 yuan ($44,210) to 379,800 yuan. Deliveries for that model begin in the third quarter of 2026, with three additional vehicle lines scheduled to follow in 2027.

    Shared Platforms and Battery Networks

    Separating the battery pack from the vehicle purchase price allows carmakers to cut retail sticker prices while matching the refuelling speed of petrol cars. For new brands entering an aggressive price war across China, joining shared networks avoids the heavy capital expenditure of building proprietary charging points across hundreds of cities.

    Dongfeng already maintains joint battery-swap operations with CATL in central Chinese cities including Wuhan and Xiangyang. CATL operated 2,000 Choco battery-swap stations across 180 cities as of June 30, with plans to surpass 3,000 locations by the end of 2026 through partnerships with Changan Automobile, Chery, GAC Group, and Seres.

    Differentiation Beyond Huawei Software

    Hardware differentiation has become urgent for automakers partnering with Huawei. As the tech giant rolls out its Qiankun autonomous driving system and HarmonySpace cockpits across rival brands including Luxeed, Stelato, and Aito, software alone no longer guarantees a distinct competitive edge on showroom floors.

    Other emerging players are making similar calculations. Saidou Technology, backed by Seres, is in discussions to connect its upcoming Aiva brand to CATL’s network ahead of pre-orders for its ME7 model in early 2027. Epicland faces a clear trade-off: adapting its chassis to third-party standard packs requires engineering compromises, while constructing dedicated stations demands massive sales volumes to achieve operational break-even.

    Epicland will confirm the powertrain specifications and commercial launch schedule for its second model ahead of its wider three-vehicle rollout in 2027.

    Beijing Hyundai opened pre-sales for its Ioniq V electric sedan at the Chengdu Auto Show on Friday, pricing the entry model at 119,900 yuan ($17,680). The vehicle leads a planned rollout of 20 electrified models designed to rebuild the South Korean carmaker’s presence in China.

    Buyers can choose between three battery-electric variants ahead of the sedan’s formal showroom launch in September. The base 540 Max starts at 119,900 yuan, the 540 Max+ costs 129,900 yuan, and the top-tier 650 Max+ sells for 139,900 yuan. All three run on an 800-volt high-voltage fast-charging architecture and deliver up to 650 kilometres of range under China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle standards.

    Local Hardware and Chinese Software

    Developed entirely by Hyundai’s China design centre, the five-seat fastback sits on the group’s dedicated E-GMP platform. The sedan measures 4,900 mm long with a 2,900 mm wheelbase, featuring frameless doors and single-motor powertrains rated at either 140 kW or 168 kW. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Supplies the lithium iron phosphate battery packs in 53.5 kWh and 66.8 kWh capacities.

    Inside the cabin, the joint venture outsourced key digital systems to domestic tech firms. The dashboard holds a 27-inch 4K display powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8295 chip, while the operating software integrates artificial intelligence models from Baidu and ByteDance. Driver-assistance software comes via Beijing Hyundai’s partnership with autonomous driving startup Momenta, enabling highway-level assisted navigation.

    The Volume Target for 2030

    Foreign legacy carmakers have spent two years cutting prices and reshaping supply chains after losing market share to domestic manufacturers such as BYD. Rather than importing global variants at uncompetitive price points, Hyundai is shifting vehicle development directly into China and sourcing cheaper local components to defend retail volumes.

    Beijing Hyundai plans to add an extended-range electric version to the Ioniq V line later in the cycle. The company has set a target to sell 500,000 vehicles annually in China by 2030, with plans to export the Chinese-developed sedan to overseas markets later in the production run.

    Apple Inc’s talks with China’s CATL and BYD over battery supplies for its planned electric vehicle have been mostly stalled after they refused to set up teams and build U.S. plants that would solely cater to the tech giant, three people with knowledge of the discussions said.

    The firms informed Apple sometime in the past two months that they were not able to meet its requirements, the people said. But the U.S. company has not given up hope of resuming talks with either CATL or BYD, according to one source.

    Chinese battery makers are more advanced than rivals in the development of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries which are cheaper to produce and sources have previously said Apple favors this battery technology.

    CATL, the world’s No.1 maker of batteries for EVs, has been reluctant to build a U.S. factory due to political tensions between Washington and Beijing as well as cost concerns, said one of the people with direct knowledge of the talks.

    The Chinese firm has also found it impossible to set up a separate product development team exclusively working with Apple due to difficulties in finding sufficient personnel, the person added.

    BYD, which has an iron-phosphate battery plant in Lancaster, California, declined to build a new factory and team that would solely focus on supplying Apple, said two of the sources.

    The stalled discussions have meant that Apple has been considering Japanese battery makers and it sent a group of people to Japan this month, they added.

    Panasonic Corp is one of the companies that Apple is considering, said one of the people.

    The sources declined to be identified as the talks were confidential. Apple, BYD and Panasonic declined to comment.

    CATL said in a statement to Reuters that it denied “the relevant information”.

    “We are evaluating the opportunity and possibility of manufacture localization in North America,” the statement said, adding that it has a dedicated professional team exclusively for each customer.

    Sources said last year Apple was aiming to launch an electric car by 2024. Apple has not publicly disclosed its plans. The stall in discussions comes at a time when U.S. President Joe Biden is seeking to make the United States a powerhouse in electric cars, setting a goal of having half of all new vehicles sold in 2030 electric.

    Any delays in securing battery supplies could further impede EV development for Apple which last month lost the head of its car project, Doug Field, after he decided to return to Ford Motor Co.

    Tesla Inc, which has been making some of its Model 3 and Model Y cars in China with LFP batteries from CATL, said this week it intended to use that battery chemistry outside China as well.

    CATL and BYD use a type of battery pack technology to improve the performance of LFP batteries. Without that, LFP batteries usually offer much shorter driving ranges and lower energy density than the more expensive lithium batteries that use cobalt and nickel.

    U.S. commercial electric vehicle maker Electric Last Mile Solutions Inc (ELMS) on Thursday said it has signed a battery supply deal with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL). The financial terms of the deal, which runs through 2025, were not disclosed. CATL’s batteries power the Class 1 small delivery vehicle that ELMS began building last month at its plant in Mishawaka, Indiana.

    The companies are also exploring a setup where CATL would have a U.S. plant that would make battery cells and ship them to the ELMS plant in Indiana for assembly into battery packs, an ELMS spokesman said. “We reached an important milestone to secure battery capacity in an extremely challenging supply environment,” ELMS’ deputy chief financial officer, Rob Song, said in a statement.

    Battery makers are boosting production to meet soaring worldwide demand as carmakers accelerate the shift to electric vehicles to comply with tougher emission rules aimed at tackling climate change. CATL, which supplies numerous global automakers including Tesla Inc, Volkswagen AG and General Motors Co, has not announced where it would open a U.S. plant, but last year purchased a facility in Glasgow, Kentucky. Kentucky state officials in September 2020 offered incentives to CATL for a potential battery pack plant there.

    Ningde, China-based CATL, which already has U.S. sales offices, has previously declined to comment on plans for the American market. President Joe Biden has made it a priority to support the rollout of electric vehicles to make the United States competitive with China.

    Under the deal with ELMS, CATL will provide lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries using simpler cell-to-pack technology. The LFP chemistry is less expensive and safer than cobalt- or nickel-based cathodes in other batteries.

    In August, Troy, Michigan-based ELMS, which went public in June through a reverse merger with a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC), said despite impacts from COVID-19 and industry-wide supply chain problems it was on track to build 1,000 vans this year.

    Following the small van, which has a starting price of $34,000 before federal tax credits, ELMS plans to build a larger Class 3 truck in the second half of 2022.

    Chinese EV Battery Maker CATL Extends Deal With Tesla

    Chinese electric vehicle battery maker CATL said on Monday it has extended a battery supply deal with U.S. EV maker Tesla Inc to 2025.

    Ningde-based CATL said in a stock exchange filing that it would supply battery cells to Tesla, which is making Model 3 sedans and Model Y sport-utility vehicles in Shanghai, until December 2025.

    Other Tesla battery suppliers include Panasonic Corp and LG Energy Solution.
