    L Catterton targets Japan’s furniture sector with stake in Seki Furniture

    L Catterton, an investment firm supported by luxury goods group LVMH, has entered into a strategic partnership with Seki Furniture, a prominent furniture producer and retailer in Japan.

    Established in Okawa in 1968, Seki Furniture originated as a wholesaling business and has since evolved into a leading omnichannel company. Currently, it operates 26 retail outlets, incorporating its Crash Gate brand, and maintains a formidable online presence.

    Seki controls the majority of Japan’s wholesale residential furniture market and is broadening its reach into sectors such as offices, hotels, restaurants, and hospitals.

    The company is backed by an expert in-house design team and an extensive supplier network. Its brands, notably Relaxform, garner recognition for their design, quality, and affordable pricing.

    CEO Hideki Haruta stated, “Moving ahead, we aim to collaborate with L Catterton to achieve additional medium- to long-term growth and augment our corporate value. We remain committed to providing our customers with services and products that offer enduring value.”

    This investment follows L Catterton’s previous investments in home furnishing businesses, including Restoration Hardware and Boll & Branch.

    Earlier this year, L Catterton entered into a strategic agreement with Megabass, a high-end Japanese fishing gear manufacturer, to assist in the company’s expansion.

    LVMH-backed L Catterton invests in Japanese cosmetics company Etvos

    Japanese cosmetics brand Etvos has received a significant investment from global private-equity firm L Catterton’s Asia fund.

    The LVMH and Groupe Arnault-backed fund will partner with Etvos’s existing management to extend growth, with special attention to expanding store footprints and enhancing customer experiences.

    Following the completion of this investment, LVMH Japan president Norbert Leuret and Chanel G.K former special advisor Masatoshi Kuroda will join Etvos as non-executive directors to enhance the board composition.

    “This investment is a testament to the tremendous efforts and hard work of the Etvos team and we are pleased to partner with L Catterton as we accelerate our growth,” said Etvos CEO Hifumi Ogawa. “We look forward to leveraging L Catterton’s unmatched sector expertise and wide network of industry contacts as we expand our retail footprint, enhance the customer experience, and further expand our high-quality product portfolio.”

    The investment is L Catterton’s first in a Japanese cosmetics brand.

    In a marriage of high fashion and finance, a new partnership is being formed by luxury products company LVMH with two equity firms, Catterton and Groupe Arnault.

    They have agreed to create L Catterton, combining private equity firm Catterton’s North and Latin American interests with LVMH and Groupe Arnault’s European and Asian private equity and real estate interests, now under the Singapore-based L Capital and the L Real Estate banners. Under the terms of the agreement, L Catterton will be 60 per cent owned by the partners of L Catterton and 40 per cent jointly owned by LVMH and Groupe Arnault.

    This will make L Catterton the largest global consumer-focussed investment firm with six distinct and complementary fund strategies specialising on consumer buyout and growth investments across Asia, Europe, and North and Latin America, as well as prime commercial real estate globally. After various successor funds are closed, L Catterton expects to grow its assets under management to more than $12 billion, drawing on 27 years of experience with more than 120 investment and operating professionals in 17 offices across five continents. It will be led by global co-CEOs J. Michael Chu and Scott A. Dahnke, currently managing partners at Catterton.

Its investments include CorePower Yoga, Kettle Foods, Nature’s Variety pet food, Noodles & Company, Outback Steakhouse, PF Chang’s, Plum Organics, Restoration Hardware, Protein Bar, Snap Kitchen, Sweaty Betty and Wellness pet food.

    L Capital invests in companies across Asia and Europe in such sectors as beauty and wellness, fashion and accessories, food and beverage, media and entertainment, and special retail. Founded in 2001 with support from LVMH and Groupe Arnault, it specialises in lifestyle brands and selective retail businesses in Europe. L Capital – Asia is Asia’s largest consumer-focussed private equity firm with headquarters in Singapore, and regional offices in Hong Kong, Melbourne, Mumbai and Shanghai. Its investments include 2XU, Asiaray Media, Bateel, Charles & Keith, Emperor Watch & Jewellery, Jones the Grocer, Marubi and Sasseur.

    Subject to customary regulatory and certain investor approvals, the L Catterton transaction is expected to close early this year.
