    Nepal to shut down CDMA from 2022

    The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has reportedly decided to switch off CDMA services in Nepal from 2022.

    The regulator’s Radiofrequency Policy Determination Committee has decided on a policy of CDMA network shutdowns in order to pave the way for refarming spectrum in the 800-MHz band.

    Currently only Nepal Telecom operates an active CDMA service, under the brand Sky. The service is currently available in most areas of the country, but the user base is low due to the preference for GSM services in the market.

    Nepal Telecom had decided in 2017 to stop investing further in both CDMA and Wimax, but has not currently set a date for the network shutdown.

    The operator plans to return its 6 MHz of 800-MHz spectrum to the regulator after the network shutdown.

  • DoCoMo licenses wireless patents to Huawei

    DoCoMo licenses wireless patents to Huawei

    Japan’s NTT DoCoMo announced it has granted a standards-essential patent license for its wireless technologies to equipment vendor Huawei.

    The operator has now granted patent licenses to more than 10 companies and plans to pursue more such licensing deals in the future.

    As a result of its extensive R&D efforts over the past two decades, DoCoMo currently holds more than 5,300 standards-essential patents for W-CDMA, LTE and LTE-A technologies, the company said.

    The company licenses its patents both as part of patent pools lumping together interrelated standards-essential patents from multiple vendors, and through direct deals with individual licensees.

    Financial terms of the licensing deal have not been disclosed. DoCoMo said it plans to build up 5G intellectual property as it continues to contribute to the development of the standard, and will continue to pursue licensing deals for its patents via patent pools and individual negotiations.

    Huawei may acquire stake in Bakrie Telecom

    Huawei is reportedly set to acquire a 9% stake in struggling Indonesian CDMA operator Bakrie Telecom as part of a debt repayment procedure.

    Bakrie Telecom secured shareholder approval to issue convertible bonds worth 56% of shares in the company, that will then be divided among its 50 creditors.

    The convertible bonds are worth around 7 trillion rupiah ($530.5 million), with a price per share of 200 rupiah, four times higher than the company’s current trading price.

    As Bakrie’s largest lender Huawei will receive bonds accounting for 9% of Bakrie Telecom shares. Indonesian independent telecom tower operators Protelindo and SUPR will receive stakes worth 7%  and 6.8% respectively, according to the report.

  • RCom to upgrade CDMA network to 4G from May

    RCom to upgrade CDMA network to 4G from May

    India’s Reliance Communications (RCom) has revealed plans to progressively upgrade its CDMA customers to 4G starting in May.

    The operator will upgrade its CDMA network to LTE using the newly liberalized 800-MHz spectrum starting on May 4, citing a letter sent from the company to the Department of Telecom.

    RCom will progressively move its roughly 5 million CDMA customers onto 4G as the rollout progresses.

    RCom has already liberalized its 800-MHz spectrum in 16 of India’s 22 telecom circles and recently received clearance from India’s cabinet to do the same in four more.

    The first round of spectrum liberalization cost a hefty 53.83 billion rupees ($806.5 million), while the second will cost around 1.3 billion rupees. In the remaining two circles, RCom has already paid for liberalized 800-MHz spectrum.

    The sources stating that RCom plans to take advantage of its spectrum sharing pact with Reliance Jio Infocomm by deploying its own network but mostly using Reliance Jio’s infrastructure to provide the 4G services.

    RCom and Reliance Jio plan to leverage each others’ spectrum to ensure they are both capable of providing pan-India 4G coverage and competing against the nation’s three largest operators, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, which have already launched 4G.
