  • GM Korea to offer more Chevys on local market

GM Korea to offer more Chevys on local market

GM Korea, the Korean unit of General Motors, will bring in more Chevrolet models produced outside the country if local demand rises, a company executive said Wednesday.

“Chevrolet is a global brand. We have a very diverse portfolio. We will make sure that customers in Korea will have access to Chevy models brought from around the world,” GM Korea President and Chief Executive Kaher Kazem said in a showcase for the face-lifted Spark.

The upgraded Spark will go on sale next month in Korea after it is produced at the Changwon plant, 400 kilometers (248 miles) south of Seoul, for local and international markets.

To select the right Chevrolet models for the Korean market, GM Korea conducted a consumer survey from May 8 to 20. The six models posted on the Chevrolet webpage were the Equinox, Traverse, Tahoe and Suburban sport utility vehicles and the Corvette sports car and Colorado pickup.

The company didn’t provide the survey results as the poll was for its own reference.

The Equinox SUV will be displayed at the Busan motor show next month and is expected to hit dealerships within this year, the CEO said, adding that the introduction of Chevy cars fully depends on domestic demand.

As the demand for SUVs has been on the rise in global markets, carmakers have beefed up their lineups with SUV models in recent years.

The New Spark is the first model of 15 new and upgraded vehicles GM vowed to launch in the Korean market in the next five years as part of its commitment to bolster its operations in Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

“We start today with the Chevrolet Spark to open a new chapter together in Korea. The Spark is an extremely important vehicle not only for domestic customers but also for international customers,” Kazem said.

The Spark comes with eight air bags and other safety features, such as forward collision alert, side blind spot alert, lane departure warning and low-speed collision mitigation braking systems.

The Spark is available in 48 markets and is the best-selling mini car in the United States, with sales of 176,627 units in the six years through 2017, the company said.

The 1.0-liter gasoline model with a manual transmission sells at the starting price of 9.8 million won ($9,100), and prices go up to 13 million won depending on options. The price for the Spark with an automatic transmission is higher than the manual model by 1.8 million won, it said.

GM and the state-run Korea Development Bank (KDB), the two biggest shareholders in GM Korea, recently signed the binding agreement that will permit a combined 7.7 trillion-won lifeline – 6.9 trillion won from GM and 810 billion won from the KDB – to keep the loss-making Korean unit afloat.

Under the deal, the Detroit carmaker is banned from selling any of its stake in GM Korea before 2023 and is required to keep its holding in the unit above 35 percent until 2028.

In February, GM announced its plan to shut down one of its four car assembly plants in Korea by May and asked the KDB to extend a financial helping hand to GM Korea. The Korean unit has continued to post net losses worth an accumulated 3.134 trillion won over the past four years through 2017 due to lower demand for its models.

Chevrolet Sales Thailand Hands Out 500 One World Futbols

Chevrolet Sales Thailand recently donated 500 One World Futbols and numerous books to 25 schools within the province of Nakhon Pathom. The donations were facilitated through a coordinated effort with local dealership Chevrolet Chor Erawan Nakhon Pathom.

Chevrolet Thailand and Chevrolet Chor Erawan Nakhon Pathom also coordinated a Chevrolet Play for Dreams corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity that saw two customers take delivery of brand-new Chevrolet Colorado pickup trucks.

“Play is a fundamental human activity that can inspire children and adults alike. Thanks to the support offered by Chevrolet Chor Erawan Nakhon Pathom, we are able to engage with young students today, fueling their ingenuity and imagination for the future of Thailand,” said Wail Farghaly, Managing Director of GM Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand.

Chevrolet has thus far donated a total exceeding 24,000 One World Futbols throughout Thailand as part of its One World Play Project. The Play for Dreams event enabled students to get an up-close look at the new Colorado while receiving their futbols.

Two of Chevrolet Chor Erawan Nakhon Pathom’s customers, Karun Khiaothongnoi and Prapas Bunpen, took delivery of their new Colorados in the presence of several executives, including Farghaly; Nataporn Jiramahapoka, Director of Sales and Network Development, Chevrolet Sales Thailand; Wiwat Chanwaowarm, Managing Director, Chir Erawan AutomobileNakhonpathom; Kanya Chanwaowarm, Assistant Managing Director, Chir Erawan Automobile Nakhonpathom; and Thanachart Chanwaowarm, Retail Operator, Chir Erawan Automobile Nakhonpathom.

“We had a very successful launch of the new Colorado and have received many positive reviews from dealers, customers and the media. Today, we’re delighted to welcome Mr. Khiaothongnoi and Mr. Bunpen to the Chevrolet Colorado ownership family, and through a combination of the quality of the product, connectivity, and Complete Care program, we hope that they become customers for life,” Farghaly added.

  • GM Korea to sell 10 Chevrolet Aveo compacts online

GM Korea to sell 10 Chevrolet Aveo compacts online

GM Korea said on Sept. 19 it will sell 10 units of its new Chevrolet Aveo compacts via Auction, a local online shopping site affiliated with eBay Korea, on Sept. 26.

This is the first time in Korea that a carmaker has decided to sell vehicles online.

Even though the unprecedented online car sale seems more like a marketing activity, industry watchers say other carmakers could follow suit considering consumer reaction, especially among youngsters who prefer online shopping rather than visiting physical shops.

“Through the collaboration with Auction, we hope to appeal to female drivers in their 30s and 40s, the new Aveo’s target customers,” a GM Korea official said.

In August, Ticket Monster, a daily-deal site, stirred controversy after it sold 20 Jaguar XF sedans via its website without consulting the carmaker’s UK headquarters. Jaguar Land Rover Korea at the time hinted at a legal action for damage to its brand value and creating confusion.

The retail price of the Aveo is 17.79 million won (US$16,000). GM Korea plans to offer diverse benefits to those who purchase the car online, including online cash points worth 5 million won.

  • GM China sets year to date retail sales record

GM China sets year to date retail sales record

General Motors and its joint ventures booked record retail sales of 2,197,192 vehicles in China during the first eight months of the year, which was up 2.3% year on year. The increase, the automaker said, was driven by successful new product launches and an improved mix of SUVs and MPVs.

In August, domestic sales by GM and its joint ventures declined 4.8% to 248,815 vehicles, owing to softness in the overall vehicle market.

GM China president Matt Tsien said: “Recently launched models such as the Buick Excelle GT and Cadillac ATS-L have been well received by consumers and produced solid sales growth.”

Increased demand for several SUV and MPV models helped offset the market slowdown in August. The Buick Envision and Baojun 560 led the sales growth during the month, rising 161.7%, while sales of the Baojun 730 MPV more than doubled.

Buick enjoyed its best sales ever in China in the first eight months of the year. Sales rose 5.4% year on year to 581,544 units, led by the Excelle GT and Envision. In August alone, Excelle GT volume jumped 77.6%.

Cadillac also set a record in the first eight months of the year with sales rising 12% year on year to 49,186 units. Sales of the ATS and ATS-L reached a new high for the period.

Chevrolet sales declined 7.4% to 391,677 units year over year between January and August. However, sales of the Trax urban SUV surged 146.2% to a record for the eight-month period.

Baojun sales jumped 282.5% to 223,367 units, an all-time high from January to August. The Baojun 560 SUV exceeded expectations in its first six weeks on the market.

Wuling sales declined 8.1% to 948,643 units in the January-August timeframe due to continued contraction of the mini-commercial vehicle market.
