Burberry Sees Remarkable Christmas Sales Boost, Thanks to Chinese Market Surge

Burberry, the iconic British luxury brand, surpassed its holiday season sales forecasts, with the most significant surge being noted in its Chinese market.

    4th Quarter Financial Overview

According to the latest fiscal report of the quarter ending December 27, Burberry witnessed a 3% annual increase in comparable store sales, leading to a revenue of £665 million. Of particular note was the growth in Greater China, which saw a 6% rise in store sales. The Asia Pacific (APAC) region also reported a sales increment of 5%. Unfortunately, no sales growth was observed in Europe and the Middle East during this period.

Joshua Schulman, the CEO of Burberry, attributed these promising figures to the brand’s successful implementation of their Burberry Forward strategy. He cited an improved sales growth rate and enhanced revenue quality across different retail channels and geographical locations.

    Key to Success

Burberry’s win in Greater China and APAC was primarily fuelled by a considerable uptick in Gen Z customers, who contributed to double-digit growth.

Schulman commented on the positive customer response to Burberry’s immersive Timeless British Luxury campaigns and experiences. The brand’s core outerwear category continued to demonstrate resilience, with rising customer interests now also observed in accessories and ready-to-wear collections.

“As we step into the 170th year of Burberry, these results substantiate the enduring strength of our iconic brand and instill confidence in the journey ahead,” Schulman added.

  • Thailand’s New Year spending to hit $2.9B

Thailand’s New Year spending to hit $2.9B

Consumer spending during the New Year holiday is expected to reach 103 billion baht ($2.96 billion), pushed by the country’s continued economic recovery from the pandemic.

The estimated spending is an expansion of 20.1% from the 85.7 billion baht posted during the previous New Year period, the highest increase since 2007 and the first time in three years consumption exceeds 100 billion baht.

“Consumer spending is expected to be the most active in three years during the upcoming New Year festive season, boosted in part by the government’s recently approved ‘Shop Dee Mee Khuen’ tax rebate scheme,” said Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC). “This will be good for the economy.”

On Tuesday, the cabinet approved a series of stimulus packages to increase consumer spending during the New Year period, including the Shop Dee Mee Khuen tax rebate scheme, under which consumers can claim up to 40,000 baht in tax deductions for goods and services purchased between Jan 1 and Feb 15.

The maximum spending eligible for tax deduction is split into two parts: 30,000 baht for products or services for shoppers who receive paper tax invoices, and another 10,000 baht for shoppers who ask for electronic invoices.

The measure does not cover the purchase of some products and services, including alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, cars, motorcycles, boats, hotel rooms, tour guide fees, utility bills, mobile phone bills, internet service bills and insurance premiums.

According to Mr Thanavath, the tax rebate scheme is expected to generate about 60 billion baht worth of spending, which would help drive the country’s economic growth in the first quarter of next year by 0.1-1.0 percentage points.

Saowanee Thairungroj, a member of the UTCC’s advisory board, said most of the spending will be slated for parties, overseas travel and merit- making. Spending on luxury goods and popular New Year gifts is predicted to increase from the previous year, she said.

Ms Saowanee said average spending is estimated at 33,944 baht per person, up from 30,634 baht in the same period last year.

Luxury products represent 45.8% of average spending, followed by travel at 18.4%, durable goods at 14.4%, parties at 11.3%, garments and shoes at 3.9%, liquor/wine at 3.5%, merit-making at 2.6%, and others for the remainder.

The survey found notably higher consumer spending on luxury products, travel, durable goods, liquor/wine and parties, with spending on luxury products increasing to 15,556 baht per person from 14,142 baht last year.

Spending on travel rose to 6,262 baht from 5,445 baht, durable goods gained to 4,899 baht from 4,082 baht, parties increased to 3,835 baht from 3,335 baht, and liquor/wine rose to 1,173 baht from 656 baht in the previous New Year season.

In terms of requests from the government, most respondents cited tackling corruption, more consumer spending stimulus measures, a reduced cost of living and higher daily wages.

For 2023, people also expressed concerns about increased use of drugs, the economic outlook, the high cost of living, unemployment, debt and fresh Covid-19 outbreaks.

Darrell Lea cooks up 70 tonnes of Christmas Puddings

Calm down, Australia. It might have been a tough, tough year… but at least Darrell Lea Christmas puddings have returned to supermarket shelves to make things feel joyful again.

Handcrafted in Australia, these puddings have a light and fluffy nougat center, are smothered in creamy milk chocolate, and topped with edible Christmas holly.

Darrell Lea made over 70 tonnes of puddings this year, using 25 tonnes of milk chocolate and 10 tonnes of desiccated coconut!

These legendary nougat treats were first launched by the Aussie confectionery company in the 1940s and have been selling out yearly ever since.

It goes without saying that the $10 puddings are still Darrell Lea’s best-selling Christmas product.

The nougat pudding isn’t the only item on our Christmas list this year. Also returning are their (completely addictive) Crunchy Christmas Balls, their famous Rocklea Road, ginger pieces smothered in dark chocolate, and Caramel Snows (featuring caramel fudge drizzled with white fondant and dark chocolate).

It’s beginning to taste a lot like Christmas.

  • Kiehl’s Seoul pop up exhibition uses digital engagement to share Christmas cheer

Kiehl’s Seoul pop up exhibition uses digital engagement to share Christmas cheer

A three-day Kiehl’s Seoul pop-up store was unveiled on Saturday, drawing several of South Korea’s most famous KoLs and incorporating multiple digital touchpoints and VR.

For the first time, Shinsegae Duty-Free allowed a single brand to take over the entire center court on the 10th floor of its Myeongdong department store, the hub of its downtown duty-free retail space. Kiehl’s Travel Retail Asia Pacific created multiple installations around the golden mirror carousel in the center of the floor, the highlight a real snowmobile where guests could don a virtual-reality headset and speed through the streets of downtown New York City.

The pop-up store was opened by popular K-pop R&B star Eric Nam and Kiehl’s Travel Retail Asia Pacific GM Petrina Kho.

Two of South Korea’s most famous KoLs were also on hand:  Risa Bae and Ha Neul, both of whom boast more than 1 million followers on Instagram and spent more than an hour posing for selfies with fans.

The pop-up space was themed Make it Merrier with Kiehl’s and was designed to appeal to both children and adults. One of the installations allowed people to customize a children’s storybook and – by scanning a QR code – download it in digital form. Others included QR-based interactions where visitors could answer questions to redeem free samples of Kiehl’s products.

The pop up was topped off with a giant colorful animated 360-degree video wall on the balcony of the 11th floor, framing the centre court. Artwork for the pop up was created by Finnish graphic artist and illustrator Janine Rewell

Kiehl’s has built a reputation for sustainable practices and corporate social responsibility and this event reinforced that commitment. The company committed up to US$10,000 to the charity Room to Read, by donating $1 for every sale of 125ml Ultra Facial Cream Holiday Limited Edition between November 1 and December 31. The funds will be used to purchase books.

Dr Geetha Murali, Room to Read’s CEO, told guests at the launch the cash would be sufficient to fund reading programs for 200 children in developing countries.

“Room to Read’s mission is to create a world free of illiteracy and a safe place in schools for young girls to read and study.” The organization’s internal research shows that 80 percent of the children it has helped to date have graduated from school, compared with just 20 percent on average in the countries they work in.

Meanwhile, all the displays created for the pop up were made from sustainable wood and after they are disassembled this week, all the items will be donated to schools and charities for children to enjoy.

Kho said the pop up was designed with the spirit of “giving and sharing”.  It follows a successful series of Kiehl’s Loves promotions in Bangkok, Hainan, and Seoul earlier this year.

“Holiday is a joyous time of the year and Kiehl’s is delighted to push the boundaries of disruptive and engaging retail expressions with Shinsegae Duty-Free through our immersive popup,” she said.

Hong Seok Ho, merchandising division senior VP at Shinsegae Duty-Free, said the partnership with Kiehl’s was part of the retailer’s mission to constantly deliver “unique and inspiring retail experiences” for customers.

  • Myer turns up the tech scene this Christmas

Myer turns up the tech scene this Christmas

Myer once again has launched a technology-fuelled Christmas campaign, with this year’s campaign including a bluetooth-enabled stocking and online hub where Aussie kids can write a letter to Santa, create a wish list (which parents can share with friends and family) and track the whereabouts of Santa on Christmas Eve.

The “Christmas is where we are” campaign launched on Sunday with a TV spot featuring “Sally”, a girl who is worried how Santa will find her, since her family has decided to go camping over Christmas.

Myer, together with creative agency Clemenger BBDO, answered that question with its Myer Global Positioning Stocking, a $34.95 bluetooth-enabled stocking that can be paired with a mobile device via the Myer Connect app.

Once connected, users can access an interactive map where they can create a wish list, which can be shared with friends and family, write a letter to Santa and track Santa’s whereabouts on Christmas Eve.

The campaign follows Myer’s first foray into tech-fuelled Christmas ads, with its “Naughty or Nice” baubles last year. Customers could connect the $20 baubles via the Myer app and see if they glowed red or green, depending whether they were on Santa’s naughty or nice list.

The baubles reportedly sold out in 11 days, according to Ad News, and Clemenger BBDO said it would look to use the data gathered through the campaign for re-marketing.

The launch of 2019 campaign is just the beginning of Myer’s Christmas push, according to chief customer officer Geoff Ikin.

“You will see over the coming weeks our Christmas campaign come to life – with the launch of our Giftoriums, Santalands and iconic Christmas windows – which positions Myer as the one-stop-shop for Christmas this year,” he said in a statement.

  • Bunnings to have full e-commerce offer by Christmas

Bunnings to have full e-commerce offer by Christmas

Bunnings managing director Michael Schnieder has announced he expects the homewares and DIY retailer will have its e-commerce operations online and fully operational nationwide before Christmas 2019.

The business has trialled a more limited online offering in select locations, but has previously stated it would roll-out a more robust offering by September 2020.

“We believe that, done right, our click and collect offer will be rolled out across Australia by Christmas – well ahead of schedule,” Schneider said.

“This follows the successful introduction of click and collect in Tasmania in April. We’ve been really delighted with the progress and customers’ response to the offer.

“This is a real testament to our team, who have worked hard to make this happen, ensuring we are building an offer that delivers choice and convenience when it comes to how people want to shop with us.”

Schnieder also indicated that he expects lower interest rates and the Coalition’s incoming tax cuts to spur customers into spending, delivering some relief in a difficult retail environment – one which NAB chief economist Alan Oster said fallen to levels not seen since the GFC.

Bunnings has the fourth most visited shopping and classifieds website in Australia, but only enabled online ordering of select items in June of 2018.

The DIY retailer has previously said it will shift some of its focus toward first-time DIY customers to target the “next generation of customers”.

The trends of high-density living and long-term renting have informed the business’ products moving forward, as opposed to its more traditional large-scale renovation focus.

  • Amazon sees ‘record breaking’ holiday season

Amazon sees ‘record breaking’ holiday season

Global online marketplace Amazon has announced a record-breaking holiday season, with customers shopping en-masse across both the Christmas and Boxing Day sales events on the storefront. “This season was our best yet… we are thrilled that in the U.S. alone, more than one billion items shipped for free this holiday with Prime,” Amazon chief executive of worldwide consumer Jeff Wilke said.

While the online store didn’t provide sales figures, Australian purchases saw a love of gaming push sales of the Nintendo Switch and New 3DS XL consoles dominate the holiday period, as well as Sandisk memory cards and various video games compatible with the systems themselves.

Fashion brands Birkenstocks, Bonds, Champion, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger and Puma were also noted as being “particularly popular” through the period.

“We were delighted to see so many Australian consumers shopping across all categories on Amazon.com.au in the run up to Christmas [and] during our Boxing Day Sale Event,” Amazon Australia country manager Rocco Braeuniger said.

“Our first year in Australia saw us increase selection five-fold to over 100 million products and introduce many new products and services for customers to enjoy, [and] we look forward to bringing much more to Australian consumers in 2019.”

In the lead up to the event, research from PayPal noted that it expected a quarter of Australian shoppers to head online on Boxing Day, with 70 per cent of those surveyed stating that online shopping is less stressful.

“Australians are looking for the best deals, not the stress that’s traditionally associated with heading out to the shops for the Boxing Day sales,” PayPal shopping expert Liz Lefort said.

“Increasingly those deals, or better deals can be found online, and Aussie shoppers are taking heed of that.”

  • Vinomofo launches click and collect for Christmas

Vinomofo launches click and collect for Christmas

Online wine retailer Vinomofo will launch a click and collect service tomorrow in the lead up to Christmas.

The service will operate from the company’s Bridge Street warehouse in Port Melbourne and will be open 9-5 Monday to Friday for customers to collect their online orders, with a 2-hour processing time.

Vinomofo co-founder and joint CEO Andre Eikmeier said the service has enabled it to bridge the gap between online and offline.

“Click N Collect enables us to not only provide our mofos with exceptional service, but also helps to bridge the gap between online and offline,” he said.

“We now have a great mechanism to share our love, passion and ethos with our tribe personally when they come to collect from us.

“We’ll be engaging with our tribe personally, talking about their wine choices and welcoming them into everything we’re proud of as they walk through the doors of our warehouse.”

Vinomofo has set up a specific customer pick-up point at its warehouse, which will be manned by a dedicated customer service representative.

Click and collect has become a popular online delivery option among Australian booze buyers in recent years, with both Coles and Woolworths’ Dan Murphies brand also capitalising on demand for fast-turnaround online ordering.

Earlier this year Woolworths launched one-hour click and collect through its BWS brand, while Wesfarmers has also rolled out a similar offer under First Choice Liquor.

Vinomofo’s head of culture Michael Ellis said the service will be limited to its Port Melbourne warehouse in the immediate term, with no plans to roll-out the service into other states with depots or through a partnership with another retailer.

“What’s most important for us is having consistency across the whole transaction and user experience and delivery is one of those things we’ve never been able to control once the wine has shipped, so what we’re excited about now is coming in and having that more personal interaction with us…as for partnerships, not something we are looking at right now,” he said.

  • FedEx ready for the Christmas rush

FedEx ready for the Christmas rush

FedEx expects says it expects to handle 380-400million packages on its global network between Black Friday (24 November) and Christmas Eve.

It also predicts that it will more than double its average daily volume of 13 million shipments on three Mondays over the Christmas period.

It attributes the surge to e-commerce-savvy consumers making more last-minute purchases.

FedEx’s main European hub at Paris-Charles de Gaulle regularly handles over 300 aircraft per week and handles around 1,200 tonnes of freight per day. The Central and Eastern Europe hub in Cologne handles 58 weekly flights to and from Europe, the US, and Asia.

Worldwide, over 400,000 team members are preparing for the peak season on the FedEx global network, which consists of more than 650 planes (the second largest airline in the world in terms of number of aircraft) and more than 150,000 motorised vehicles.
