    A prominent Taiwanese petrochemical manufacturer has already adopted this collaborative solution to secure sensitive operational data. The two companies will share their respective industry applications and R&D technology to co-develop an integrated AI development and management platform.     As the first airline to form such a partnership with CHTTL, CAL will focus on enhancing the AI service experience and strengthening corporate management of on-premises AI applications.     The company is increasing its investment in undersea cable infrastructure, allocating up to TWD 2 billion (USD 60.9 million) in 2025. The deal aims to support CHT’s objective of achieving 80 percent population coverage as well as boost 5G subscriptions to over 20 percent of its current subscriber base.     Taiwanese incumbent carrier Chunghwa Telecom has signed an MoU with Japan’s Softbank for collaboration on artificial intelligence (AI) and IoT.

    In a statement, the companies said the technological and commercial cooperation aims to develop use cases for future smart cities in Taiwan.

    It will also involve ST Solutions Taiwan Co. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of SoftBank Corp.

    The pair said they plan to leverage their insights and experiences from the collaboration in AI, IoT and related fields.

    The collaboration will initially focus on such areas as global IoT platforms, smart infrastructure, smart agriculture as well as utilization of high-accuracy location data and big data.

    The partnership with Softbank is Chunghwa Telecom’s latest push in IoT.

    In February, the Taiwanese operator inked a deal with Ericsson to use the Swedish vendor’s IoT Accelerator platform to develop IoT services for its enterprise customers.

    Max Chen, president of mobile business group, at Chunghwa Telecom, was quoted as saying in the statement that the partnership with Ericsson will boost its capabilities in machine learning and IoT operations.

    “As Taiwan’s industry is mainly export-driven, Chunghwa Telecom’s IoT innovation drive will help local industries to expand their international IoT business horizon,” Chen said.

    Chunghwa may need to change bands for ST-2 satellite

    Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom could be required to the change frequencies it is using for its ST-2 satellite in order to accommodate the use of 5G on the 3.4-GHz to 3.6-GHz frequency range.

    Taiwanese regulator NCC plans to conduct experiments to see if the operator’s satellite system can coexist with 5G servicesv.

    If it is found that there are potential interference problems, the regulator may order Chunghwa Telecom to use different frequencies for its satellite service, which is used by a number of TV channels to transmit broadcast signals.

    The NCC believes that the order would not cause much disruption as it would affect only one transponder of the satellite system.

    The ST-2 contains 10 transponders in the frequency band in question – the C-band in satellite parlance, which uses 3.7-GHz to 4.2-GHz spectrum for downlink and 5.9-GHz to 6.4-GHz for uplink. It also has 41 transponders in the 12-GHz/14-GHz Ku-band.

    The report adds that the NCC may offer compensation to Chunghwa Telecom to cover the costs of the spectrum relocation.

    Meanwhile the Taiwanese government is expected to make its final decision over the use of spectrum in the 3.4-GHz to 3.6-GHz range for 5G by June, while the NCC has established a taskforce to draw up the rules for a 5G auction.

    Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom is upgrading its video security framework as it seeks to expand its multimedia-on-demand (MoD) service offering to include 4K ultra-high definition video streaming.

    The operator has upgraded to the latest generation of the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS), VCAS Ultra, to support new delivery models and next-generation streaming services for its MoD offering.

    VCAS Ultra is designed to allow operators to provide premium ultra-HD services and advanced hybrid network deployments. It includes enhanced content security profiles to meet the service requirements for UHD including multi-network video watermarking technology.

    “As we enter this exciting new domain of premium video delivery, we couldn’t be more pleased to already have such a deep level of confidence in our security framework and trust in Verimatrix to navigate us through the complex requirements associated with UHD/4K services,” Chunghwa Telecom deputy principal engineer Dr. Chih-Cheng Lo said.

    “Selecting VCAS Ultra was an easy decision, but we also know it is the optimal solution to support our future goals as we continue to evolve to stay ahead of the competition.”

    In October, Chunghwa Telecom announced plans to develop original video programming and films to drive growth and allow expansion overseas, in the face of growing competition from local cable TV companies.

    The operator announced an ambition to transition into a digital media company with both a telecoms and multimedia presence.

    But Chunghwa’s video on demand service has reportedly lost NT$30 billion ($1.02 billion) since launching 13 years ago.

    Chunghwa taps Ericsson for trial NB-IoT system

    Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom has contracted Ericsson to deliver a trial narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) system, and plans to use the system to test a range of IoT devices and applications at its laboratory.

    Ericsson will provide an end-to-end NB-IoT solution comprising a radio system, massive IoT RAN software, virtual EPC, virtual subscriber data management and an IoT smart device and application service.

    The two companies have also agreed to continue to work together to identify 5G use cases and applications for the digital transformation of industry verticals such as transportation and utilities. Ericsson and Chunghwa Telecom signed a 5G collaboration memorandum of understanding at Mobile World Congress 2017 in February.

    NB-IoT, a 3GPP standards-based low power wide area (LPWA) technology promises significant improvements in areas including indoor penetration, power consumption and system capacity that will be needed to support future IoT applications.

    “Ericsson has long been our leading network provider and has demonstrated the strong device life-cycle management and integration capabilities that are required for a system of this type,” Chugnhwa Telecom EVP and president of Telecommunication Laboratories Chen Shyang-Yih said.

    “NB-IoT technology is one of our primary focuses in 2017, and we are keen to explore more opportunities based on the new technology.”

    Chunghwa also recently announced plans to introduce four-carrier aggregation (CA) this month using the 1,800-MHz spectrum refarmed following the nation’s 2G switch-off.

    Chunghwa Telecom to deploy 4CC CA this month

    Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom plans to introduce four-carrier aggregation (CA) by the end of the month to take advantage of its refarmed 1,800-MHz spectrum following the nation’s 2G switch-off. The operator also plans to increase its number of 4G base stations by 40% this year, mostly in urban areas.

    With the upgrade to four-carrier aggregation, Chunghwa Telecom expects to boost peak speeds to up to 500Mbps, up from 300Mbps over three-carrier aggregation.

    The upgrade will first commence in urban and commercial areas of Greater Taipei as well as some northern Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp stations. By the end of the year, the upgrade is to be extended to all metropolitan areas as well as 12 train stations.

    In remote areas, Chunghwa plans to deploy UMTS 900 base stations to allow subscribers to continue making calls over 4G after the 2G switch-off.

    The operator has a capex budget for the year of NT$30.3 billion ($993.7 million), to be spent primarily on 4G and fiber deployments.

    Chunghwa Telecom had 7.12 million 4G users by the end of March, around two thirds of its total subscriber base. The company also had the largest number of 2G hold-outs at the time of the 2G switch-off at the start of the month – around 60,000.
