Roku adds important new streaming service, but you’ll have to pay for it

Roku has been adding a bucketload of new channels since the beginning of the year, so it’s probably “unusual” to report about a single service being added to the streaming platform. Still, this is quite an important streaming service for those who want to stay in the loop with the latest news.

Starting this week, Roku users can access content offered through CNN+, the subscription streaming from CNN. Although the new service doesn’t come for free, the fact that the option is there should be good enough.

In case you didn’t know CNN+ offers about 8-12 live daily shows, new CNN+ Original Series and a library of more than 1,000 hours of programming from the CNN Original Series and CNN Films teams. Subscribers also get access to the streamer’s Interview Club feature on desktop, mobile and tablets, which houses a passionate community.

Of course, to get access to the robust content offering available on CNN+, you have to pay either $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year. The good news is a 7-day free trial is available via the Roku channel store for those who want to try it before becoming subscribers.
  • CNN taps Beme to launch new media outfit

CNN taps Beme to launch new media outfit

CNN is funding and launching by summer of 2017 a standalone startup and it has tapped with Beme co-founders Casey Neistat and Matt Hackett to build the new brand.

The new company will be devoted to filling the world with timely and topical video and empowering content creators to use technology to find their voice.

For the new outfit, CNN is hiring dozens of producers, builders, developers, designers and content creators of every mold.”

The deal also means that CNN has acquired Beme, which is the digital innovation piece of a multiyear development deal that will result in the formation of a new media company “bringing together technology and storytelling.”

CNN said it was approaching this project as a startup, with Andrew Morse (GM, CNN Digital Worldwide), Chris Berend (SVP, digital video), Casey Neistat and Matt Hackett are the new brand’s founders.

“And just like Great Big Story, it will operate as a separate, stand-alone business as part of the CNN Digital portfolio,” the company said.

As for Beme, the app will cease to exist and the innovation team will focus on launching the new company and building premium and transformative technology-driven experiences for CNN’s portfolio of businesses. Users will be notified and will have ample time to download their videos.

All 11 Beme employees will join CNN as a distinct technology group, dedicated to charting the future of CNN through innovative mobile video products –- some as stand alones, others as enhancements to the vast array of existing products in the CNN portfolio.

  • WeChat replaces waiters at Chinese restaurant

WeChat replaces waiters at Chinese restaurant

A Chinese restaurant in Beijing has replaced its front-of-house staff and diners use messaging app WeChat to order and pay.

Diners at Renrenxiang Restaurant launch the app on their smartphone to browse the menu and place their order. They then pay for their meal using the messenger service, and are given an order number, reports Springwise.

Their meal is prepared in the kitchen and their number called out over a loudspeaker when it is ready. The customer can then collect their food. After eating, they leave their crockery on a cleaning table.

Customers do not even need to be in the restaurant to order. One frequent diner who works nearby says she orders while still in the office, then strolls to the restaurant. By the time she arrives, her meal is ready.

Meanwhile, the noodle restaurant’s owner is looking at cutting his overheads even further, reports CNN.

“There will be four ‘no’s in the restaurant – that is, no waitress, no cashier, no merchandiser and no chef,” says Renrenxiang founder Liu Zheng. “I did this because I’m following the technology development trend in China.

“Thanks to the app, we can cut out unnecessary expenditure, simplify management and focus more on taste and quality.”

The app also collects customer-related data – such as what dish is most popular, and what age groups visit more frequently. Renrenxiang uses the data to improve its marketing strategy. But despite its high-tech approach, the restaurant does not have its own website.

Also, it is not the first restaurant to offer waiterless service. In 2007, a restaurant in Nuremberg, Germany, began to offer fully automated order and table services. There are also similar eateries in Japan and the US.

Using robots to cook, serve and clean is also becoming more common in China.
