Moiselle flies in customers as sales slide

Hong Kong luxury fashion retailer Moiselle has revealed a raft of innovative strategies to restore flagging sales.

Hit by a $31.9 million loss for the first half of the trading year due to declining spending by Mainland Chinese tourists, Moiselle is introducing new ranges and even flying in loyal customers for exclusive product displays.

The company has reigned in its store openings and is putting the squeeze on landlords to reduce rents.

Last week Moiselle revealed its sales had fallen by 21 per cent to $161.2 million mainly due to weak consumer sentiment and sluggish retail sales in its Hong Kong home market, which accounts for 55 per cent of its turnover. Gross margin fell from 82 per cent in the first half of last year to 76 per cent in the latest period.

The group operated 92 retail stores and counters in Hong Kong; first- and second-tier cities of China; Macau, Taiwan and Singapore as at September 30 – three fewer than at the end of March. It closed five stores in hong Kong during the six month trading period.

Moiselle – which sells under the Moiselle, Mademoiselle, Coccinelle and French-influenced Germain brands – has shifted focus to a more tailor-made sales model in Hong Kong, targeting members of its VIP customer club, and has formed partnerships with several Mainland Chinese online shopping websites.

The organised shopping visits by customers from Mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore to its product showrooms in Hong Kong target its most loyal customers with high spending power. The tours began in May and started generating income in July.

Meanwhile, Moiselle forged ahead with a strategy of diversifying its product offer to target different segments of the high-end and upper middle markets for women’s fashion apparel and accessories. It expanded its Moiselle and Germain ranges into menswear. It launched European accessories labels Sequoia and Coccinelle into the apparel market through exclusive distribution agreements to add impetus to its business development.

In its stock exchange filing, Moiselle said it did not expect Hong Kong’s retail market to turn around “any time soon”.

“China’s economy has shifted to a lower gear and the growing trend towards a higher proportion of the Mainland Chinese visitors with weaker spending power in Hong Kong seems irreversible. Moreover, the Hong Kong dollar, which is pegged to the greenback, is poised to enter a phase of appreciation against many other currencies as the US Federal Reserve Bureau looks set to raise the benchmark interest rate in the foreseeable future. These developments are likely to weigh on both the shopping tourism and average purchase value in Hong Kong, where the group derives most of its revenue.”

Italian accessories brand Coccinelle has opened a pop-up store on Jeju Island in partnership with Bluebell Korea.

Located in Jeju Tourism Organization’s duty free shop, the 20sq m space opened on 23 October and features the brand’s new store concept.

Open displays and bright steel feature heavily in Coccinelle’s minimalist store

The store features open displays to showcase bags and accessories as well as wall display modules and bag stands made from bright steel, said to give the interior a “timeless elegance”.

The pop-up highlights Coccinelle’s Autumn/Winter 2015 collection which includes key piece the Arlettis bag.

A big board with the Autumn/Winter 2015 campaign, which features American-Italian model Emily DiDonato as the face, dominates the back of the pop-up.

Coccinelle Head of Travel Retail Emanuele Mazziotta commented: “We are honoured to be on Jeju Island at Jeju Tourism Organization Duty Free Shop with Bluebell and we thank them for their support with this opening. Jeju Island is a well known tourist destination in the Asia Pacific region and represents another key location in our expansion plan. Another important opening will happen soon in the region.”

Coccinelle has further extended its global network of shops with three new openings in China and Morocco and on board the St Peter Line cruise ship, which sails the Baltic Sea.

The three locations opened in August and September and carry the Autumn/Winter 2015 collection, which channels ‘relaxed femininity, effortless glamour and spontaneity’ according to the Italian accessories brand.

The collection is an expression of the #FeelGood concept that interprets the true spirit of the brand, “a positive attitude that Coccinelle transforms into a game of colours (chocolate, amber, ivy green and bicoloured fuchsia combined with wine red), of contrasts and details,” says Coccinelle.

The Arlettis Bag is said to be the ‘key bag’ of the season featuring a stirrup-shape golden latch and a double variation of leather, calfskin and suede across different models.

The personalised 30sq m shop-in-shop at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport Terminal 2 opened in partnership with Dufry, and features the new store concept.

“Bright steel for the wall display module and fumé mirrors give the interior a timeless elegance and make the best use of the available space and open displays that showcase bags and accessories,” adds the brand.

Emanuele Mazziotta, Head of Travel Retail, says: “We are pleased to be present at Chengdu Shuangliu Airport. Chengdu is a key business city and represents an important milestone for our expansion plan into China domestic and travel retail channels. We want to thank Dufry for all the efforts and support for this opening.”

Coccinelle has also opened a corner at Casablanca International Airport in partnership with International Duty Free Shops and an additional corner on board of the Baltic Sea’s St Peter Line cruise ship.

Emanuele Mazziotta, added: “We want to thank International Duty Free Shops; Casablanca Airport is another important opening for Coccinelle in 2015 and the first one in the region.

“In September we have also opened a corner on board of St Peter Line cruise ship, following the recent openings on Costa Crociere cruise ships with Starboard. This additional location on the Baltic Sea show our interest and trust in the cruise business”.
