    Cebu Pacific Equips Airbus A330neo fleet with SITA Swiftbroadband Cockpit Connectivity

    Cebu Pacific Air, the Manila, Philippines-based low cost airline, will equip its fleet of Airbus A330neo aircraft with an upgraded form of SITA for Aircraft’s AIRCOM cockpit connectivity technology with Swiftbroadband-Safety (SB-S).

    The AIRCOM connectivity is being factory-installed on a fleet of 16 new A330neos from an Airbus order first placed by Cebu Pacific in 2019, that now also includes a Flight Hour Services (FHS) materials management contract signed by the two companies during the 2022 Singapore Air Show last month. SITA first signed a global connectivity services distribution agreement with Inmarsat in 2017 to start leveraging Swiftbroadband-Safety within its suite of cockpit communication applications that it now brands as AIRCOM Cockpit Services.

    SB-S is Inmarsat’s Aircraft Communication, Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) over Internet Protocol (IP) networking technology that permits previous aircraft data transmissions solely done over the legacy ACARS network to be done faster and cheaper using IP as a gateway for air-to-ground and aircraft-to-controller data transmissions and messaging.

    Sumesh Patel, President of Asia Pacific, SITA, said in a statement that “Cebu Pacific is the first airline to take advantage of these capabilities to boost safety and deliver greater operational efficiencies on their new fleet.”

    Three specific connection types are provided over SB-S, including character-based ACARS data services for Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Contract (ADS-C) and Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC). ADS-C, CPDLC, real-time prison reporting, and flight data streaming along with aircraft performance data downloads can also be provided over the SB-S prioritized IP channel. Additionally, the regular IP channel can be used as a voice and data communication channel for Airline Administrative Control (AAC) and Airline Operations Center (AOC) applications.

    According to SITA, some of the specific applications Cebu Pacific can use on AIRCOM with SB-S that are not enabled without Swiftbroadband include real-time updates for flight optimization tools and graphical weather applications.

    The SITA cockpit connectivity agreement for Cebu Pacific comes following the airline’s announcement earlier this month that it will begin expanding its domestic network, including re-starting flights to Siargao, Surigao, and Calbayog after closing those and many other routes due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions.

    Cebu Pacific received its first A330neo in December and now has two of the 459-seat aircraft in its fleet. Mike Szucs, Chief Executive Adviser at Cebu Pacific, expects every Airbus model aircraft in its fleet to feature the new engine option variant by 2027.

    “We turned to SITA given their expertise in the aircraft domain to help us navigate the challenges and complexities of the aircraft communications landscape, and prepare us for that future,” Javier Massot, Chief Operations Adviser, Cebu Pacific Air, said in a statement. “Having high-speed connectivity and greater capacity is essential to access more advanced digital applications that support decision-making onboard. It will enable our pilots and operational staff to access information in real-time and deliver a better service for our passengers.”

    Hyundai’s Virtual Cockpit Concept Gets Steering-Mounted Touchscreens

    The Hyundai i30 with the new virtual cockpit comes with a new steering wheel that comes with wide bridges one either side to house the two vertical displays. The touchscreen offers the driver controls to the music system, menu and mode change among others. In fact, the display even comes with a new, freely configurable icon design for easier understanding and two actuator modules underneath the surface allowing for a stronger and more consistent haptic feedback which optimises the usability for the driver. Hyundai focused on improving the existing concept of touch displays with haptic feedback on the steering wheel, similar to the centre display. The centre display can be used to control the car’s features like climate control, speaker setting and much more.

    As for the instrument cluster, it comes with a multi-layer display (MLD) that is claimed to come with a new, very natural way of attention control. Unlike regular displays, the MLD consists of two displays, which are stacked behind each other at a distance of 6mm that offer visual 3D effects – While one part of the graphic is shown on the front display and the other part on the rear display. In the area where the graphics overlap, the impression of an object in space is created. Regina Kaiser also said that “We are doing research on the learnability, intuition and potential driver distraction of the virtual cockpit.” In fact, the company study revealed that Hyundai’s new cockpit is significantly below the limits of the globally acknowledged motor vehicle safety associations AAM and NHTSA.

    Hyundai says that to date, the company’s steering wheels and cockpits have undergone a major development process and the technology continues to evolve. “We are continuously working on new technologies that make our cars perfectly intuitive and user-friendly”, said Regina Kaiser. While the cockpit is still in the early prototype stage, the company says that it’s nonetheless an important milestone and fairly advanced compared to the existing technology, parts of which we’ll be seeing in some of the future models from Hyundai.

It’s called the Qs Inspiration concept and it draws inspiration from the company’s DNA.

    With the Qs Inspiration, Infiniti confirms a new form of design language from Infiniti which we will see on its future electric cars. The Qs is inspired by the art and modern architecture of Japan. Inside, the minimalist cabin combines striking artistry and craftsmanship, and it features two distinct zones – a clutter-free cockpit designed to engage the driver, and a relaxed passenger zone that make the most of the generous interior space.

    Indonesian Aircraft Maker Showcases N219 Cockpit Simulator

    Indonesian aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) is showcasing its new product, N219 cockpit simulator, at the Indonesia Business & Development (IBD) Expo 2016 being held from September 8 – 11.

    “We are showcasing CN235 model and N219 cockpit simulator,” the spokesperson of PTDDI, Irland Budiman, said on Friday.

    The simulator is the main attraction at the PTDI booth as visitors are allowed piloting the N219 and fly as if they are in N219.

    Irland said N219 was included in the booth of best innovation products created by Indonesian human resources.

    N219 is a multi-purpose twin-engine aircraft designed to be operated in remote areas. It is a developed version of NC212, produced by PTDI under CASAs license.

    Indonesia Business & Development (IBD) Expo 2016 is witnessing the participation of 118 companies with 700 subsidiaries and 1,100 local government enterprises.

    The event, which features the BUMN (the state-owned enterprises) awards, an exhibition, an international conference, seminars, and many other programs, is being held under the theme: State-owned Enterprises are Agents of Development.

    The Expo is a platform to promote and market various innovative products as well as an opportunity for stakeholders to explore investment opportunities.
