In a bold and surprising move CHANEL debuts capsule of €1000 sneakers

French luxury brand Chanel has launched a capsule featuring 500 pairs of €1000 (US$1185) sneakers to celebrate its takeover of French high-fashion streetwear retailer Colette.

Courtesy of Karl Lagerfeld, the sneakers are part of singer Pharrell Williams ongoing collaboration with Adidas Originals.

The resale value of the sneakers have shot up to $32,000 after 120,000 shoppers registered to buy them. The 500 buyers will be chosen by an independent ballot process.

Williams says he expects the resale value of the sneakers to go up to $40,000 as any of his merchandise is known to resell for multiple times its value. For example, his Adidas collaboration with his band Nerd is now going for up to $10,000.

There is also a philanthropic twist to the collaboration as Williams and Chanel plan on donating profits to the Chanel Foundation, which supports women’s empowerment.

It is one of the final collaborations for Colette with the department store set to close on December 20.

  • Balenciaga is the hottest fashion label

Balenciaga is the hottest fashion label

Balenciaga has overtaken Gucci as the hottest fashion label, according to the latest Lyst Index.

The index draws on data analysis by fashion-search platform Lyst in conjunction with the Business of Fashion website. The 4.5 million data points analysed include sales, searches and consumer perceptions of 5 million products and 12,000 brands.

Its result is despite Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Gucci being named best fashion brands globally just last month by Interbrand consultancy.

Ranking the world’s hottest brands and top-selling products, the Lyst Index ranked Gucci first in this year’s second quarter, followed by Kanye West’s Yeezy and Balenciaga. However, the Spanish fashion brand continued to rise, displacing Gucci in the third quarter, with Virgil Abloh’s Off-White rising to third – a jump of 31 places in three months.

Lyst says Balenciaga’s rise was because of a new logo and the Colette residency in Paris keeping the brand top of mind “while Demna Gvasalia continues to design products that drive the fashion narrative online”.

Additionally, the platform praised Gucci for being a “consistent performer”, reports High Snobiety.
Rounding out the top 10 are Vetements, Givenchy, Valentino then Saint Laurent, while Stone Island leaped from 41st to eighth, followed by Moncler (previously 20th) and finally Raf Simons (previously 21st).

Lyst Index also looked at the most influential rappers in fashion for the quarter, listing (in order) Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams, Cardi B, Drake and A$AP Rocky.

Stage one of the project is expected to be completed by November. Australia Fair owner YFG Shopping Centres has engaged Hutchinson Builders to carry out the 13-month project, which includes a major expansion and makeover of Coles and an upgrade of the centre’s Scarborough Street facade.

Australia Fair’s exterior is also getting a facelift, to create a contemporary facade for the retail, dining and entertainment complex, with the structure to feature lighting and fresh signage bearing the centre’s new branding.

Other new tenants joining Australia Fair’s retail offering who have recently opened at the centre include, Ted Ross, U Grill, Joy Stylist and Green Valley Butcher. Brazilian restaurant and bar The Grill House, Vintage Grind, Stella Saigon Street Food, Chikar, Wrap and Roll and LiquorLand are also set to open their doors over the next few months, while several existing traders are relocating or undergoing a fresh fit-out.

Meanwhile Colette’s opening adds to its over 160 stores worldwide.

The retailer announced it will have new collections dropping weekly and will feature handbags and jewellery.

Ramon Otten, Australia Fair general manager, said the “highly anticipated” store opening would enhance the centre’s offering for shoppers, as upgrades to the ground floor continue to modernise the mall and its exterior.

“We are delighted to welcome Colette by Colette Hayman to Australia Fair, and expect this internationally successful brand to be very popular with our young and fashion-conscious demographic,” Otten said.

“Colette by Colette Hayman is known for fun, stylish and affordable handbags and accessories for all occasions, which we feel makes the brand a fresh and exciting addition to the expanding retail offering of our new-look centre,” he said.

Otten added it was “gratifying” to see the centre’s transformation take place, with a view to opening ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, held on the Gold Coast.
