    Colt brings IP-based ISDN phone service to Japan with VoiceLINE(v)

    Colt Technology Services has announced an expansion of its VoiceLINE(v) service to Japan, making this offering now available in 14 countries globally.

    Colt VoiceLINE(v) delivers direct ISDN to a customer’s TDM-based PBX alongside enhanced geographic coverage via Next Generation IP technology, utilising SIP Trunking to be delivered over a variety of IP-based access points.

    VoiceLINE(v) will replace Colt’s existing VoiceLINE ISDN, with customers now being able to continue to use their TDM or hybrid IP-TDM PBX.

    For more than 20 years, Colt has offered high-quality voice services underpinned by the most comprehensive network, with its ISDN and SIP interfaced voice offering serving thousands of customers throughout Europe and Japan. With the launch of VoiceLINE (v) in Japan, customers can now benefit from traditional ISDN infrastructure with modern SIP trunking delivered over the Colt IQ Network – ensuring they are able to meet the challenging demands of the modern workplace.

    While delivering ISDN services over SIP, Colt provides the opportunity to transition easily, from both a commercial and technical perspective, to SIP Trunking whenever enterprises are ready. Delivering a futureproofed VoIP-based ISDN telephony service, which offers more features than traditional TDM voice, allows enterprises to continue using their current PBX and telephone devices without having to invest in their own IP network.     Blockchain used for inter-carrier settlements in PoC trial

    Members of the International Telecoms Week (ITW) Global Leaders’ Forum (GLF), including PCCW Global and Telstra, have completed a proof of concept trial demonstrating how blockchain technology can transform inter-carrier settlement by streamlining complex transactions.

    The two operators as well as Colt Technology Services, BT, Orange and Telefonica, demonstrated the viability of a platform capable of settling voice transactions between operators within minutes rather than hours.

    The demonstration represents the first proof of concept blockchain trial to involve a multi-lateral series of relationships within the wholesale telecoms sector. It was the latest in a series of trials carried out by CLF members in collaboration with technology partner Clear, a blockchain specialist.

    The proof of concept was able to demonstrate that live data feeds could be successfully input into a distributed ledger, enabling traffic to be automatically verified and settled between two carriers.

    In a statement, the GLF said it is now reviewing its options over a potential governance structure to further develop the technology and implement a solution for the entire industry.

    “This latest PoC signals nothing less than the future of telecoms, whereby intensive manual practices can be securely automated across the wholesale ecosystem,” Colt Technology Services CEO Carl Grivner said.

    “This is a major step forward by Colt and its partners, meaning we can now invest further resources into driving both our and our customers’ businesses forward using the power of blockchain.”

  • More wholesale operators join blockchain trial

    More wholesale operators join blockchain trial

    More operators have joined the joint blockchain trial being conducted by HKT’s PCCW Global and telecoms and data center services company Colt.

    Members of the ITW Global Leaders’ Forum (GLF), including Australia’s Telstra, Hong Kong based HGC Global Communications, Spain’s Telefónica and the UK’s BT, are now getting involved in the initiative.

    The trial involves the use of blockchain to automate the inter-carrier settlement of wholesale international services.

    During a proof of concept trial in March, conducted with blockchain startup Clear, the companies demonstrated how blockchain can reduce the labor-intensive process of inter-carrier settlements from hours to mere minutes.

    Now the solution developed for the trial is being utilized in real time, with PCCW Global and Colt now using live data to settle and verify traffic, PCCW Global said.

    The companies aim to expand the bilateral testing to encompass multilateral relationships within the wholesale telecommunications industry.

    “We are very pleased that this PoC is expanding to include more carriers. A lot of the conversations at the GLF have been around how innovative technologies such as blockchain can be used to improve the overall efficiency of the industry,” PCCW Global CEO and GLF chairman Marc Halbfinger said.

    “With the PoC expanding to include more carriers, it is clear that the industry is seeing the benefit of becoming further aligned. Industry cooperation in this area will be incredibly powerful for the whole sector.”

    Colt has selected NEC and Netcracker Technology to enable and support its large-scale OSS transformation and for support in the deployment of the next-generation of its infrastructure, including virtualization.

    Colt will leverage Netcracker’s future-proof, next-generation OSS and Service Orchestration solution, which is a part of NEC/Netcracker’s Agile Virtualization Platform and Practice (AVP).

    Colt is a global high-bandwidth connectivity provider that delivers services to metropolitan small, medium and large enterprises as well as wholesale carriers in nearly 30 countries, through its intelligent, purpose-built, cloud-integrated network known as the Colt IQ Network.

    Netcracker’s OSS and Service Orchestration solution, a component of NEC/Netcracker’s AVP’s Hybrid Operations Management solution, will enable Colt to optimize its physical network and quickly monetize new investments.

    Also, Netcracker’s solutions will also prepare Colt’s infrastructure for the use of both physical and virtualized environments.

    NEC/Netcracker’s Service Orchestration solution will give Colt the ability to enable new levels of provisioning automation. This will shorten the time it takes to deliver new services to customers, eliminate the risk of provisioning errors brought about by manual processes and give Colt more accurate views into the network in order to provide enhanced support.

    “Our customers continue to expect new services to be delivered to them faster, which requires us to optimize our intelligent network and pave the way for fast-growing bandwidth requirements,” said Rajiv Datta, CTO at Colt.

    Colt optimizes routes between Tokyo, Chicago exchanges

    Colt Technology Services has launched newly optimized low-latency network routes linking stock exchanges in Tokyo and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

    The enhancements aim to benefit traders in Chicago who require fast connectivity to Tokyo, or exchange venues in Tokyo that require low-latency connectivity to Chicago.

    Connectivity will be provided through the company’s private Ethernet-based Colt IQ Network. Latency between Tokyo and Chicago is expected to reach a mere 121.07ms between each endpoint after network optimization.

    Exchange venues across the globe will be able to utilize Colt’s ultra-low-latency network that links financial markets in Japan and America. Enterprises in other industries that require leased bandwidth, advanced security, and low-latency Ethernet services are also expected to benefit from these optimizations.

    Bandwidth is selectable from a range of 1Mbps to 10Gbps, and offers optional protection and redundancy.

    Colt has also commenced optimization of other key routes in the Asia-Pacific region.

    The company said its network is configured to be fully redundant, from the infrastructure and backbone to the local loop. Point-to-Point, Point-to-Multipoint, and Multipoint-to-Multipoint topology options are available. Colt’s services are based on MEF9 and MEF14.

    Colt Asia Cloud PBX Service to launch in April

    Colt Technology Services has announced it will launch its Colt Asia Cloud PBX Service for enterprises in the region starting in April.

    The company will offer an all-in-one solution combining PBX functionality, IP phones and remote access connectivity to the office.

    The service is aimed at alleviating customers from the need of purchasing their own PBX. Instead customers will use the PBX system installed within Colt’s data centers in exchange for a a small upfront cost and monthly fee.

    Calls made using the service within the same organization will be treated as internal extension numbers and be placeable for free.

    Numbers provided by the company will be able to use the full set of PBX features including call transfer, hold and conference calling.

    “Cloud computing is already a standard in today’s IT environment. This reality also applies to voice communications, including telephony, that are indispensable to corporate business,” Colt CCO for Asia Kenji Hioki said.

    “With this service, Colt is dramatically reducing the cost of acquiring PBX and corporate telephony, in turn reducing the associated maintenance and overhead expenses that come with a communications network spanning multiple sites.”

    Colt Technology Services has announced the expansion of its SDN-enabled on-demand portfolio.

    The company said the new solutions are designed to “enable the digital transformation of today’s demanding businesses.”

    Colt’s Ethernet on Demand service supports dynamic real-time ordering, provisioning and flexing of high bandwidth connectivity between locations connected to the Colt IQ Network, the company said.

    This includes more than 5,000 enterprise buildings and 200 data centers that are currently eligible across 11 countries in Europe, creating an industry breakthrough never before realized on this scale. Colt also plans to further expand its reach to additional locations during 2017, including Asia.

    The new service allows businesses located in Colt-connected enterprise buildings to intelligently meet variable additional demands for high-bandwidth applications, such as cloud connectivity, disaster recovery or real-time data backup.

    Colt’s Ethernet on Demand service is the latest innovation available from the company’s On Demand Portfolio. It follows the launch of Colt’s DCNet On Demand in 2016, which transformed the user experience for managing high bandwidth connectivity between data centers.

    Colt’s On Demand Portfolio, which allows enterprises to consume Ethernet connectivity services on the Colt IQ Network in real-time via an intelligent online customer portal, bypasses the legacy service delivery processes.

    It also gives customers full control and the ability to flex bandwidth requirements up and down instantaneously, using the portal. The on-demand flexibility also extends to pricing, giving customers the option to choose per-hour pricing plans, as well as more traditional fixed term contract durations.

    Colt expands financial extranet in APAC

    Network and communications service provider Colt has expanded its Colt PrizmNet financial extranet by connecting to Equinix‘s IBX data centers in Hong Kong and Singapore.

    Colt said the deal with Equinix has allowed the company to double the size of its footprint in Hong Kong, by making it available to financial companies located close to local exchanges as well as those co-located at the HKEx data center.

    The agreement will also allow Colt to interconnect with key foreign exchange (FX) trading centers in APAC and globally, including direct connectivity to the largest FX trading facility in Asia, Equinix’s TY3 data center in Tokyo.

    “It is often challenging for traders in Asia to connect to the region’s scattered liquidity centres, particularly its FX markets,” Colt head of solution sales for capital markets Richard Man said.

    “By expanding the availability of Colt PrizmNet in Hong Kong and Singapore to customers hosted in Equinix IBX data centres in each city, we are able to provide an even more flexible and cost-effective solution.”

    Colt also connects to key Equinix data centers across Europe and the US, including London, New York, Frankfurt and Zurich. The company operates its own network of 34 data centers across Europe and Asia.
