  • Asian Licensing Conference lifting off in Hong Kong

Asian Licensing Conference lifting off in Hong Kong

The Asian Licensing Conference at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre is being held this week.

The event, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), focuses on the latest market trends and opportunities in the region through the lens of some of the industry’s top licensees and project owners.

The 18th edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Licensing Show and the ninth Asian Licensing Conference opened on Monday, discussing the latest market trends and sharing licensing success stories.

“As an increasing number of businesses explore licensing as a way to move up the value chain, Hong Kong will have a key role to play in facilitating the growth of the industry,” said Margaret Fong, executive director at HKTDC.

The first session, Asian Licensing Market Outlook, featured Lisa Reiner, Beanstalk MD in Europe & Asia Pacific, who offered three key points of advice for brand owners: be open to products that are relevant to local consumers; be active in protecting trademarks; and be willing to explore other routes to consumers, such as e-commerce and multiple distributor networks.

During the event, VP of Asia Pacific and Middle East at National Geographic, Mark Coleman and Claire Gilchrist, VP in Asia Pacific of Hasbro Consumer Products discussed how brand stories can provoke consumer interest.

At the second plenary session of the Asian Licensing Conference, several enterprises shared their licensing success stories, including Royal Selangor Marketing, a Malaysian company with a 135-year history that specialises in quality pewter.

Robert Goodchild, head of licensing at Aardman Animations, said: “We work with many brands all over the world and it is all about bringing colour and character to campaigns. By bringing character to a campaign we can reach new audiences and build commercially successful partnerships.”

Aardman collaborated with premium British lifestyle brand Joules last Christmas, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of both Joules and Aardman’s hugely popular Wallace & Gromit animation. Aardman also created a bespoke photoshoot with British retailer Harvey Nichols, and used its characters and humour to bring a lifestyle brand to life in a collaboration with British sofa brand DFS, emphasising the fact that both brands produce everything in the UK.

  • New features added to the official Google I/O 2019 App

New features added to the official Google I/O 2019 App

You know that the annual Google I/O developers conference is just around the corner when the latest Google I/O app becomes available in the Google Play Store. With Google I/O taking place this year from Tuesday, May 7th through Thursday, May 9th, the app is now ready to be installed on your Android phone. Now laid out in Google’s Material Display (bright white backgrounds, Google Sans font), the app allows attendees and the curious alike to view the schedule of sessions for the conference. In fact, those planning on making the trip to Mountain View can reverse seats for each event through the app.

In addition, the Google I/O app allows attendees to create a schedule that they can view, and set reminders to go off before each session starts. This custom schedule can be synced between a developer’s mobile devices and the Google I/O website. This year, the app also adds events to the user’s personal calendar and allows those attending the conference to view the grounds using Augmented Reality. Individual sessions can now be found by looking under topics and speakers, and the home page will show upcoming events, announcements and more. For those interested in the Keynote, it will take place at 10 am PDT (1 pm EDT) on May 7th.

With the use of Material Design, Google has added a Dark mode for the app that shows up once the Battery Saver has been enabled on an Android phone. This will change the app from showing black text on a white background to white text on a black background. Dark mode has been added as a feature on many of Google’s core Android apps over the last year and protects users’ eyes from the blinding white background when the app is viewed in the dark.

When you install the app, make sure it is for the 2019 Google I/O conference. Even though the Google Play Store listing showed that we were installing the 2019 app, we received last year’s app instead.

  • Asia’s Largest Logistics and Maritime Conference Opens

Asia’s Largest Logistics and Maritime Conference Opens

The sixth Asian Logistics and Maritime Conference (ALMC) today (22 November) launched its two-day run at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. More than 70 leaders from the logistics and maritime industries are speaking at the conference. Today’s activities included the plenary session “China’s Grand Initiatives: Where are the Opportunities?” The ALMC is the largest event of its kind in Asia, welcoming industry elites from some 30 countries and regions. The conference is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Carrie Lam, Acting Chief Executive of the HKSAR, said, “Strategically located at the heart of Asia, Hong Kong has long been the gateway to southern China, and the bridge between the Mainland and the rest of the world. Our infrastructure is world-class, rated first in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report. Our robust economy, trade freedom, regulatory efficiency, and excellent logistics services have made Hong Kong one of the world’s busiest logistics hubs.”

In her welcoming remarks, Margaret Fong, Executive Director of the HKTDC, said: “The ALMC aims to help the industry navigate choppy economic waters and chart a course towards new business opportunities. The three main themes of ALMC 2016 are the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s 13th Five-Year Plan and cross-border e-commerce. In each case, the logistics and maritime industries are front and centre. In just a few short years, the Belt and Road Initiative has moved from the drawing board into reality, with new ports, roads and railways linking markets along the Belt and Road routes from Asia to Europe via the Middle East and North Africa. In addition to infrastructure, world-class shipping and logistics services and know-how are required to fully realise the potential of the Initiative.”

    China’s grand initiatives

A highlight of this year’s ALMC was this morning’s plenary session “China’s Grand Initiatives: Where are the Opportunities?” Three high-profile speakers examined key strategies of the Chinese mainland – the Belt and Road Initiative, “Internet Plus” and “Made in China 2025”. The three speakers were HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, DP World; Zhao Huxiang, Vice Chairman, China Merchants Group; and Joseph Phi, President, LF Logistics.

Addressing various topics, seven forums were also held today focusing on the Supply-chain Management, Logistics, Air Freight and Shipping sectors. As well as helping the logistics industry analyse the latest market trends, the forums also shed light on how the manufacturing and trading industries can capitalise on the latest logistics solutions to grow their business, lower costs and increase competitiveness.

The first Supply-chain Management & Logistics Forum “Relocating Your Manufacturing Base – the Pros and Cons”, heard from speakers about the risks and opportunities from a supply-chain management perspective. Speakers included Dr Qu Jian, Vice President, China Development Institute; Dr John Cheh, Vice Chairman and CEO, Esquel Group; Takeshi Kondo, General Director, Yusen Logistics (Vietnam) Co, Ltd; and Tommy Lui, Director & Group Chief Representative – Southern China, Li & Fung Development (China) Ltd.

Other forums today included “Changing Landscape of Asian Air Cargo”, “Expert Panel: What’s on the Horizon for Liner Shipping?”, “Staying Ahead in Temperature-controlled Cargo Handling”, “Expert Panel: Tanker and Gas Trade Outlook”, “Sustainability – Greening the Supply Chain” and “Expert Panel: Dry Bulk Market Outlook”.

    Cross-border E-commerce

Tomorrow’s plenary session will be on the topic of “Cross-border E-commerce: Who Will Rule the Game?” The HKTDC has invited Dr Guo Dongbai, CTO, AliExpress; Zheng Changqing, Senior Director, eBay Inc; Andrey Zatsepin, Head of International Logistics, Ozon.ru; and Haruko Takachi, CEO, Japan Post International Logistics Co, Ltd. to discuss the latest developments in cross-border e-commerce.

The rapid development of digital technology is disrupting the retail industry, prompting the HKTDC to enrich this year’s ALMC programme for supply chain management and logistics. Tomorrow’s forums include “Omni-channel Strategy: Navigating the Future of Retail”, which will showcase outstanding examples of multi-channel retailing and examine online-to-offline (O2O) integration and ways to improve the customer experience. Expert speakers include Pieter Paul Wittgen, Co-Founder and COO, Grana.com; Filippo Gori, Business Development Director, International Brands, Vip.com; and Malcolm Monteiro, CEO, Asia-Pacific, DHL eCommerce. The trio will discuss the impact of omni-channel retailing on supply chain management and logistics.

Other forums tomorrow include “New Opportunities for Modern Logistics Industry in the PRD Region and Zhuhai from the completion of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge”, “Big Data, the Cloud and Your Business”, “Dalian Development Area – Core of Liaoning FTA, uprising International Financing, Logistics and Shipping Centre of Northeast Asia” and “Linking North America and Asia: Transpacific Trade back on Track”.

    Exhibition and business matching sessions

To help industry professionals gather the latest market intelligence and services, and promote Hong Kong’s advantages in logistics, the HKTDC is once again organising an exhibition alongside the conference. Nearly 100 exhibitors are showcasing their e-logistics solutions and logistics, maritime and related services. The HKTDC is also arranging more than 150 one-on-one business matching sessions to help participants foster new business partnerships.

  • CASBAA confab debuts in Macau

    CASBAA confab debuts in Macau

The CASBAA Convention annual conference debuted in its new venue, Studio City, Macau, marking the 25th anniversary of CASBAA which is dedicated to representing key players from the cable and satellite broadcasting industry under the motto ‘represent, inform, connect’.

Irwin Gotlieb, the Global Chairman for GroupM, was first to take to that stage to discuss the changing nature, and measurement of viewing behaviors. He also touched upon how the way to reach audiences via the marketing funnel is the same but a granularity of data can now inform decisions for each stage of the funnel. He underscored how media will continue to play a role becoming more targetable, addressable and eventually part of the transaction process.

Also on the subject of measurement, Ben Reneker of S&P Global Market Intelligence highlighted how machine-driven predictive measurement models are now able to inform strategic decisions on marketing and investment.

Oliver Wilkinson, managing director for PricewaterhouseCoopers, provided statistics to illustrate that pay TV is not dead, despite what the headlines say, and that it remains a primary form of entertainment.

Doing deals in China was the topic for Bennett Pozil, EVP of East West Bank, who discussed the migration of content both ways as well as some of the pros and cons of doing business in China.

Reaching a vast audience through tailored video and gaming content was the topic for Chad Gutstein, CEO of Machinima who highlighted that their most valued content was when viewers felt they had a connection to the creation of it. On a video note, Ricky Ow from Turner International predicted that Machinima’s e-Sports will be as successful as the English Premier League.

James Schwab, co-president of VICE announced the opening of the company’s first full-service office in Jakarta, Indonesia.  He discussed how their local content policy over digital channels has helped the company grow exponentially over the last few years. The recent move into TV has been important for VICE as it gives them the ability to invest more in content.

On the second day, Dave Downey, CEO of INVIDI Technologies, illustrated how “addressable” advertising could be used to predict viewing behaviors. Basil Chua, CEO from AsiaMX, talked about the need to understand viewer habits, flagging that they are watching content not devices. Both believed that the advertising formats would result in big wins for operators.

Intrinsically linked to the advertising discussion is the subject of measurement and Craig Johnson, Nielsen’s media managing director for South East Asia, Pacific and India, highlighted some of the current challenges OTT has presented with measurement, suggesting that viewership on other devices could represent an additional 15% to 20% of media usage that is not accurately measured yet. The introduction of smart-meters could help more accurately chart multi-device viewership and content sources.

Content from Japan took the spotlight with Eriya Kawachi, director of sales and promotions at Club TV Japan, showcasing some platforms that have been winning in popularity outside of Japan with Club TV. Richard Woo, consultant for WAKUWAKU JAPAN, discussed how Japanese content is well known for its creativity, uniqueness and a certain wackiness.

Korean content also featured on the agenda with Miles Ki Young Choi, founder and CEO of Bethel Group Media Contents, talking about how interactive content was key to the future, flagging interactive drama as something they were championing. Byeong-Joon Song, CEO Group 8, saw simultaneous distribution as important for Korean content, highlighting difficulties with penetrating the Chinese market and Tom Taehyun Kim, CEO and executive producer at K Production, confirmed that superb storytelling was of course essential for content to have wider appeal.

  • Aruba rethinks network procurement with NaaS

Aruba rethinks network procurement with NaaS

At the Aruba APAC Atmosphere 2016 conference held late last month in Singapore, Aruba Networks President Dominic Orr announced the launch of network-as-a-service, which supports the delivery of the company’s new Mobile First Platform.

    Core applications for Gen-Mobile era

The core applications on Aruba Networks’ new Mobile First Platform are supported by its existing network infrastructure, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth low energy (BLE), wired and WAN. The platform comprises network controls, network management, policy management, cloud networking, network analytics and location services. These applications supports the delivery of third-party IT services and business applications that form a mobile apps ecosystem.

Examples of the IT services that are available on Aruba’s Mobile First Platform include Citrix, MobileIron (MDM and enterprise mobility services), splunk (operational intelligence), ArcSight (an HP company that provides cyber security), Okta (identity management and single sign-on), Check Point, Intel Security, Juniper, and Palo Alto Networks.

As for business applications, the Platform also supports Skype for Business, AT&T, Aislelabs (enterprise mobile wallet marketing platform), kasada (cryptographic data firewall and our password-less authentication), RetailNext (in-store analytics), Envoy (visitor registration) and eventboard (visitor and room management).

“The Gen-mobile has given rise to rapid IT forces like the internet of things (IoT) and mobility. This is not just about the use of next-generation devices, like the Wi-Fi-connected TV boxes like the Apple TV, but the applications on top,” said Anthony Wai, sales engineering director of Asia Pacific, Aruba Networks (a HPE company), in an exclusive interview.

In a typical workplace environment, an organization needs to refresh the network infrastructure once every three to seven years. For example, they would need new routers and new switches to conform to new standards of the wireless network. In the past, when IT procurement was largely driven by IT, addressing user experience tended to be an afterthought. The situation today is reversed, however. “Many of the IT procurement decisions today are now user-driven. For example, the line of businesses (LoB) would first provide to their banking customers a banking application. They would then instruct IT to handle the infrastructure matters,” Wai said.

    Utility-like network procurement models

To catch up with the fast pace of new mobile apps development and delivery, and the increasingly shortened cycle of network infrastructure upgrades, IT and the other LoBs would benefit from a flexible network services procurement model, such as network-as-a-service (NaaS), said Wai.

“NaaS enables the subscription of network infrastructure services using an opex model instead of a capex model. By subscribing instead of acquiring these network services, customers can benefit from the latest technologies, and need not budget a sum of capex to invest in the next round of network technology upgrades,” Wai said.

  • Indonesia to host Forbes conference

    Indonesia to host Forbes conference

Indonesia is set to host the Forbes Global CEO Conference for a second time. The gathering will see business players and thought leaders from around the world discuss possible solutions to the continuous global economic slump.

Now in its 16th year, the conference will host at least 42 speakers and has received confirmation from 300 delegates who have been invited to come to the conference in Jakarta, a change of pace from the 2013 conference held in Bali.

Forbes Media chairman and chief editor Malcolm Stevenson “Steve” Forbes, Jr. said that Jakarta was chosen to host this year’s conference due to its continued growth even during the global economic slowdown.

The country’s sheer size and President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s efforts to establish economic reforms have caught the eye of business players from across the globe.

“Even though it’s facing some economic challenges with the collapse of commodity prices, Indonesia is still achieving higher growth rates than many of its neighbors. You have a president who is determined to make major economic reforms to unleash the potential of the Indonesian economy,” he told on Friday.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has pushed for economic reforms and has issued 13 economic stimulus packages that aim to increase investment and nurture growth.

The economy grew 5.2 percent year-on-year (yoy) in the second quarter, beating average estimates of 5 percent from economists and Bank Indonesia’s (BI) forecast of 4.9 percent.

The growth domestic product (GDP) growth rate was higher than the 4.9 percent yoy reported in the first quarter and the 4.7 percent posted in the second quarter of 2015.

With the second quarter result, the economy has so far expanded by 5.04 percent this year.

However, despite positive-looking growth, experts have predicted that the official 5.2 percent growth target for the whole year may still be unattainable as the second quarter’s performance was largely due to a surge in consumption and production during the Ramadhan and Idul Fitri festivities, a trend that typically happens every year.

Meanwhile, not much is happening on the global stage. The World Bank has forecast that global growth will only reach 2.4 percent by the end of the year.

“So you look around the world and business leaders, whether with established companies or start-ups, they face very real headwinds,” Forbes said.

Mayapada Group owner Dato’ Sri Tahir said the conference was an important event to show off the economic reforms that Indonesia had made to cut costs and create a conducive investment environment.

“Through this platform, the President can explain to these 300 and more delegates about Indonesia’s future. This platform is
important to introduce Indonesia to the world and the world to Indonesia,” he said.

Mayapada Group is one of the sponsors of this year’s conference.

The conference, themed “Rising to the Challenge”, will feature distinguished Indonesian and international speakers.

They include Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) chairman Thomas Lembong, CT Corp. chairman Chairul Tanjung, AirAsia Group chief Tony Fernandes and Ayala Corporation chairman and CEO Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala.

The conference will be held from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.

Erik-Juul-Mortensen-China's-Century-lead The TFWA China’s Century Conference will take place from 7-9th March 2017 in Guangzhou, at the port city’s Four Seasons Hotel. The official host of the event will be Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Co.

Erik Juul-Mortensen, president TFWA said: “TFWA China’s Century Conference is an essential diary date for anyone interested in the considerable commercial opportunities the Chinese market presents, as well as all those who want to gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese traveller both at home and outside China.”

The city of Guangzhou – northwest of Hong Kong on the Pearl River – is the third largest city in China and is said to have played ‘a pivotal role in the country’s economic development.’

    CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT

Its Central Business District, where the event will be located, underwent a major renovation in preparation for the Asian Games of 2010. The city now boasts a rapidly developing international airport, which is home to China Southern Airlines, and connects Guangzhou to the rest of China, Europe, Asia Pacific and beyond.

A spokesperson from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Co said: “Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Co is delighted to be the Official Host for next year’s TFWA China’s Century Conference.

“As the premier event for the duty free and travel retail industry in China, the conference brings together all the major companies involved in the market, and we believe Guangzhou is the perfect venue for such a gathering.

“Our city is one of the historic centres of trade in China and is attracting increasing numbers of business and leisure travellers, partly thanks to the efforts we are making to develop Guangzhou Baiyun as an international hub airport. We are confident this conference will be a big success and we look forward to welcoming delegates to our airport and to this vibrant city.”

SHANGHAI CONFERENCE DRAWS ALMOST 400 DELEGATES

The first TFWA China’s Century Conference took place in 2013 in Beijing. The second conference, which was held in Shanghai in 2015, welcomed 388 delegates including senior executives from numerous airlines, airports and duty free and travel retail operators.

Over the two days, 120 meetings took place between the industry’s airports, concessionaires and brands. TFWA China’s Century Conferences have featured speakers from leading airports, airlines and retailers, as well as high profile researchers, academics, authors, editors and specialist consultancies.

TFWA’s unique ONE2ONE meeting service has played a key role in the event’s continuing success, while an exciting social programme with a range of glittering events held in the most impressive venues ensures that there is plenty of opportunity for more informal networking.
