Toyota, Panasonic To Set Up Firm To Connect Cars

Japan’s Toyota Motor and Panasonic Corp said they plan to establish a joint company to develop “connected” services to be used in homes and urban development. The tie-up deepens the partnership between the companies, which in January announced a joint venture to build electric-vehicle (EV) batteries, pooling the R&D and manufacturing strengths of one of the world’s largest automakers and battery makers to compete in the fast-growing EV market.

In their latest venture, Toyota and Panasonic said they will set up a new company early next year to focus on technology that could be used to offer personalized services in the home. The pair plan to be 50-50 partners in the new firm and will increase cooperation at their respective housing operations in Japan.

“We will put our respective strengths together to offer new value in everyday life,” Panasonic President Kazuhiro Tsuga said in a joint statement on Thursday.

The move comes at a time when lower-emissions vehicles and ride-sharing services have opened up the auto industry to new competitors, leaving traditional car makers and their suppliers scrambling to find alternate revenue streams.

Toyota has been developing connected cars that can share information on usage – data that could be leveraged for on-demand ride-sharing, insurance, and maintenance.

The automaker has said it will tap into its partner network and its operations which range from building and selling cars, homes and companion robots to expand into new transportation and home energy services.

“If we are able to use this network going forward not only to manufacture and sell vehicles but to also provide new services, our future possibilities will greatly expand,” President Akio Toyota told reporters on Wednesday.

“In addition to cars, I think that having our own housing business and connected business will be a big advantage for us.”

  • Cashmaster Launches QR-Connect in APAC – New Integration Software Solution for Cash Management

Cashmaster Launches QR-Connect in APAC – New Integration Software Solution for Cash Management

Cashmaster Asia today announced the Introduction of Cashmaster QR-Connect, a QR code application providing enhanced software functionality for its Cashmaster One range of count-by-weight cash counting devices that offers an innovative, simple solution to integrating with back office or POS systems. When installed, count data is presented as a QR code on the display of the Cashmaster One device that can be scanned by a standard POS scanner or the camera of a mobile/tablet device.

The count data is instantly transferred to the POS or other system. The QR code avoids the need for USB or ethernet cable connectivity between the POS and the Cashmaster Cash counter – effectively providing wireless transfer of the cash count (including vouchers/coupons in addition to notes and coins) as well as other information for process traceability, such as cashier ID and till ID.

In a connected world, a deeper level of integration and seamless transfer of data to the POS is a growing requirement for Cashmaster’s clients. Its customers are looking to remove multiple levels of manual processing of data across their businesses in order to: reduce opportunities for errors; speed up the processing of data; give more real-time information that businesses can use to make better, faster decisions; and provide greater accuracy and accountability to their enterprises. Integration can be seen also as a key component in a loss prevention strategy.

No matter the level of operation, these solutions provide data in a format that can be easily digested by cash management and analytics programs for big, medium or small companies. As competition increases, the rewards of deploying Cashmaster One and Cashmaster QRConnect can show directly in bottom line improvements. Gordon McKie, Group CEO of Cashmaster, commented, “Companies are under intense pressure to maximise income and improve efficiencies, while at the same time motivating staff. It’s a complex dynamic that Cashmaster understands; it has also been a powerful imperative for us in designing the intuitive technology for cash management that helps clients achieve those goals.

“Solutions can be tailored to customers’ specific needs, from simple off-the-shelf tools requiring minimal customer resources to implement, to working with customers’ IT teams in providing more complex solutions. With a proven quick return on the initial investment to boot.”

Cashmaster is a global company that specialises in the design and manufacture of count-by-weight cash counting devices using the most advanced touch-screen technology. The company has more than 30 years’ experience in creating innovative and reliable cash handling solutions for a wide range of international clients including supermarkets, convenience stores, retail, banking, fast-food restaurants and coffee shops.

  • Singapore’s cellcos to adopt Mobile Connect

Singapore’s cellcos to adopt Mobile Connect

Singapore’s mobile operators M1, Singtel and StarHub have agreed to adopt the GSMA’s Mobile Connect authentication standard for universal secure mobile-based authentication.

The three operators are building a unified platform to enable integration with online service providers using a common API.

Once implemented, the functionality will allow Singapore consumers to create a universal trusted digital identity for access to compatible telecoms, banking, e-commerce, entertainment and travel services.

For online transactions that require greater levels of security, consumers will also be provided with a unique personal code.

GSMA research indicates that 87% of consumers leave a website when asked to register, and many face difficulties remembering a growing list of usernames and passwords, with 40% using a forgot password feature monthly.

Implementing the single sign-on functionality therefore also benefits online service providers, which the research suggests stand to improve page views by 67% and likelihood to purchase by 48%.

The first online services that support the operators’ new authentication function are expected to launch in the second half of next year.

The GSMA’s Mobile Connect is currently available in 22 countries, including China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

    Shenzhen-Hong Kong Connect project approved

The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) today have given in-principle the approval of the structure of the proposed Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect.

The project will provide mutual stock market access between Hong Kong and Shenzhen via a northbound trading link and a southbound trading link. There will be no aggregate quota under Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect.

Today’s joint announcement issued by the SFC and the CSRC also abolishes the aggregate quota under Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect with immediate effect.

“The expansion of mutual stock market access represents yet another milestone towards strengthening the interconnectivity between the stock markets in Hong Kong and the Mainland as well as consolidating Hong Kong’s position as a major offshore renminbi centre,” said Mr Carlson Tong, the SFC’s chairman.

The launch of Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect is subject to the finalization of all necessary regulatory approvals, market readiness and relevant operational arrangements.

A separate announcement on the commencement of Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect will be made in due course.

  • GSMA launches Mobile Connect in India

The GSMA has launched its Mobile Connect authentication service across India, in collaboration with six mobile operators.

Bharti Airtel, Idea, Aircel, Vodafone India, Tata Teleservices and Telenor India have all started offering Mobile Connect services.

A range of Indian digital service providers in sectors including commerce, finance and banking, health services, media and entertainment, travel and hospitality and B2B have agreed to make use of the system

GSMA director general Mats Granryd said the Indian launch marks the culmination of a year-long collaboration with the Indian mobile operators to introduce a single, secure mobile-based authentication system to the market.

“With Mobile Connect, mobile operators are fulfilling an important role in the digital identity space, giving users control over their own data and enabling Indian consumers, businesses and governments alike to interact and access online services in a convenient, private, and trusted environment,” he said.

Mobile Connect  employs a user’s unique mobile number and combines it with a unique PIN for more secure use cases to verify and grant online access to services.

The system is now being implemented by 42 operators in 22 countries worldwide, making it available to nearly 3 billion customers.
