    Sigma, Tech Mahindra partner on connected car

    Sigma Systems and Tech Mahindra have announced the launch of a connected car service subscription management platform for the automobile industry.

    The joint platform was selected and will be an integral part of a global automobile manufacturer’s connected car services program, paving the way for emerging on-board digital and IoT based applications.

    The companies said the service subscription management platform is a fully automated, cloud-based SaaS solution designed and delivered with scalable platform architecture and Open API’s.

    It consists of key Sigma portfolio products including Sigma Catalog and Sigma Order Management.

    The platform will drive consumers’ digital experience on new connectivity services while being mobile network operator agnostic and using eUICC SIM, the companies said.

    The platform will provide lifecycle management of connected car services and subscriptions manage roaming scenarios and control data consumption by driving policies and enhance end-user experience.

    KT, Hyundai Mobis join to develop connected-car tech

    KT said Thursday that it will collaborate with Hyundai Mobis to develop self-driving and connected-car technology.  The two companies agreed to work on real-time navigation technology and vehicle-to-everything technology, which will allow cars to communicate with connected devices. To enable development, the telecommunications company said it will install 5G infrastructure at the Hyundai Mobis test-drive course in Seosan, South Chungcheong.

    The fast 5G network will allow sensors on a Hyundai Mobis self-driving car to send significant amounts of data to servers immediately to allow for accurate real-time traffic navigation. The process takes minutes in existing 4G networks.

    The cooperation comes as the two prepare for the fast-growing connected car market. Industry researcher IHS Markit predicted connected-car sales to reach 72.5 million units by 2023 from 24 million units in 2015.

    Following Amazon’s Footsteps, China’s JD.com Launches In-Car Delivery

    JD is launching a service in China where online shoppers can have their purchases delivered to anywhere they can park their cars.

    The Chinese e-commerce giant has launched an ‘in-car delivery service’ in partnership with electric vehicle maker NIO, a similar concept to that unveiled by Amazon in the US in April.

    The JD In-Car Delivery Service will use connected car technology that automatically locates customers’ cars, then enables JD’s delivery personnel to pop the trunk of  the car using a Personal Digital Assistant to the car, deposit the consumer’s order, and lock the trunk again.

    To maximise security, the device is programmed so only the specifically authorised JD delivery person will be able to open the car trunk, while the entire delivery process can be monitored using in-car cameras.

    JD, which boasts 90 per cent of its orders can be delivered same- or next-day, will deliver to vehicles parked at home, at the office, or in a range of other approved areas.

    “The offering adds a new, convenient option for consumers with cars who may not be available to accept deliveries in person, such as office workers who park their cars in the company lot during the day, or commuters who leave their cars in their driveways while they are out,” said Bing Fu, head of planning and development, with JD Logistics.

    “Imagine the convenience of finishing work for the day and knowing that your orders are already waiting in your car for you, ready to drive home. You can have the peace of mind that, even when you’re not at home, your JD orders have been stored securely in your trunk. JD In-Car Delivery makes that possible.”

    The company plans to partner with other leading automakers in China to expand the service across connected car models in coming months.

    To use in-car delivery, JD consumers who own compatible car models can link their JD account with their account on the automakers’ connected car platforms.

    SKT, Ericsson, BMW achieve 3.6Gbps for 5G connected car trial

    SK Telecom achieved what it says is the world’s fastest 5G speed for a connected car during a demonstration conducted with Ericsson and BMW Korea.

    SKT said the trio has successfully tested its pilot 5G network on a connected car running at 170 kilometers per hour, reaching a 3.6Gbps transmission speed over the 28-GHz band.

    The demo was conducted at the German car maker’s driving center in Yeongjong Island, Incheon, where the trio first successfully tested its pilot 5G network for multi-vehicular communications last November.

    SK Telecom said with 5G avoiding obstacles is difficult at high speeds, but the operator achieved this through the application of advanced beamforming and beamtracking technologies.

    “Connected car is regarded as the barometer for 5G as it can only be realized through the combination of all 5G technologies. As ultra-high speed and ultra-low latency are prerequisites for realizing autonomous driving and immersive media services, the 3.6Gpbs transmission speed we successfully demonstrated today not only brings us a step closer to realizing autonomous driving, but will also have a great impact on a broader range of industries,” SK Telecom said in a statement.

    The demo significantly enhances the stability of connected car services by improving image recognition and V2X (Vehicle to Everything Communication) technologies, the operator added.

    “That is, a vehicle will be able to communicate, in real time, with other vehicles, traffic lights and surveillance cameras to understand and respond to unexpected situations and obstacles… in a much shorter time.”
