    Esprit names new COO

    Hong Kong-listed apparel brand Esprit has appointed an experienced lawyer as its new COO to help continue to drive the brand’s renaissance.

    After four years of rolling losses exceeding US$1 billion, Esprit issued a shock profit warning last month projecting its first half year in the black since 2017. It lost US$503 million in the year to June 2000.

    This week William Pak assumed the role of executive director and COO. Biographable details provided by the company via a stock-exchange filing describe Pak, 42, as an attorney licensed by the New York state bar and the spouse of Christin Chiu, Esprit’s chairwoman and an executive director.

    “Mr Pak is a seasoned executive with extensive operating and management experience. He has over a decade of a successful career in leading companies in the financial services and fund management industry,” said the filing. “His industry expertise also includes technology, alternative energy, mining and real estate. He is experienced in identifying and revitalising underperforming areas and driving favourable results while ensuring sustainable growth.”

    Prior to his career in finance, Pak was a lawyer in the investment funds practise at White & Case’s New York and Hong Kong offices.

    He will be paid US$231,000 annually (HKD1.8 million) and report to CEO Mark Daley who was appointed in January.

    Chiu was appointed to Esprit’s board after Hong Kong company North Point Talent Ltd, became the company’s single largest shareholder mid last year. North Point is the investment vehicle of Karen Lo, a descendent of the Vitasoy founding family.

    Philippines Targets Ex-Wirecard COO

    The Wirecard scandal continues to unravel as authorities in the Philippines file criminal complaints against its former chief operating officers and others.

    The Philippine’s National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) filed criminal complaints against individuals involved in the Wirecard scandal over accused violation of banking, cybercrime and e-commerce laws, according to a report citing a text message from Justice Minister Menardo Guevarra.

    NBI recommended charge against ex-Wirecard COO Jan Marsalek, Manila-based lawyer Mark Tolentino, Joey Dela Cruz Arellano, Judith Singayan Pe, and other unnamed individuals, according to a separate statement from the prosecutor general’s office.

    If found guilty, the charged individual could face up to 12 years of imprisonment and a maximum fine of around $42,000.

    Wirecard continues to face the aftermath of a scandal involving 1.9 billion euros ($2.3 billion) of missing funds despite documents that allege its previous existence and witness by auditor EY.

    Tolentino’s law firm was used by Wirecard to open foreign currency bank accounts with BDO Unibank and Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) – the two banks that the German firm claimed held the now missing funds.

    Arellano is being accused of issuing forged documents confirming that Wirecard held cash at BPI and receiving payments for the task by Pe and other unnamed individuals.

    Ex-AirAsia executive joins Malaysia Airports as COO

    Malaysia Airport Holdings (MAHB) has appointed former AirAsia executive Mohammed Shukrie Mohammed Salleh as its new chief operating officer.

    MAHB says that Shukrie will oversee strategies related to airport operations, safety and security, as well as planning and development.

    Shukrie was formerly AirAsia Malaysia’s chief operating officer, before moving to the current position.

    It is the second senior leadership appointment at the airport operator in 2019. In January, MAHB appointed its former finance chief Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin as its chief executive.

    On Twitter, AirAsia group chief executive officer Tony Fernandes lauded the move, saying that he was “thrilled” that Shukrie would be joining MAHB.

    “He values partners, can communicate well and is a positive human being and a team player. These are qualities that have been lacking in MAHB so I’m sure with him there now things will improve,” he adds.

    AirAsia and MAHB have been embroiled in a legal spat over passenger service charges and service levels at Kuala Lumpur International airport. MAHB has initiated court action against the budget carrier over unpaid passenger service charges, while the low-cost carrier then responded with a counter-claim against the airport operator and has been pushing for mediation.

    MAHB manages 39 Malaysian airports, including those in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu.

    Dolce & Gabbana names Fabrizio Cardinali COO

    Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana has appointed Fabrizio Cardinali as chief operating officer and board member.

    Prior to joining the luxury brand founded by the Sicilian design duo, Cardinali was the chief executive of Alfred Dunhill. As the chief of the British men’s brand, Cardinali was replaced by Andrew Maag back in January 2017.

    During his four-year tenure at Dunhill, Cardinali lead the expansion of Dunhill’s specialist product range and focused on growing the British brand’s retail presence, which included the opening of its flagship store in Mayfair, London.

    Prior to Dunhill, Cardinali served as Dolce & Gabbana’s sales and marketing director, before taking up the role of chief executive at Richemont-owned Lancel.

    AirAsia X dedicates aircraft to remember late COO

    AirAsia X has dedicated an aircraft to remember their late chief operating officer Anaz Ahmad Tajuddin, who passed away on Jan 13 from cancer.

    AirAsia group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes filmed two Facebook live videos of the sombre event held on Tuesday, unveiling the aircraft with Anaz’s smiling face on the fuselage together with the phrases “A truly passionate Allstar” and “Anaz the legend”.

    “We’re here to give tribute to our wonderful staff Anaz, who left us all too quickly,” said Fernandes in the video.

    Anaz was 43 when he passed away. Meanwhile, AirAsia X chief executive officer Ben Ismail said that the Airbus A330 aircraft was delivered about three weeks ago, and has since travelled to Japan, Australia and China.

    “We are celebrating Anaz being one of the most important men in AirAsia,” said Ben.

    “As you can see, I dedicated one of our aircrafts to him. We love him. I love him,” he added.

    AirAsia executive chairman Kamarudin Meranun said they have gathered to remember “our dear brother Anaz” who was a “very passionate Allstar”.

    “It’s happy because we still remember him but it’s also a sad affair,” said Kamarudin.

    AirAsia chief executive officer Aireen Omar also commended the artistic touch on the plane.

    “I will always remember Anaz,” said Aireen.

    Anaz’s family and other AirAsia staff were also present at the event.

    AirAsia’s group COO dies

    AirAsia has confirmed that its Group Chief Operating Officer, Anaz Ahmad Tajuddin, 43,  passed away at 5.50am today after battling cancer.

    In a statement, the budget airline said he would be buried at the Tanah Perkuburan Raudhah, Kota Seriemas, Negri Sembilan, after after Friday prayers at the Masjid Kuarters KLIA.

    Telstra names Robyn Denholm COO

    Telstra has named Robyn Denholm as its new chief operations officer, replacing Kate McKenzie, who retired in July after working with the Australian incumbent for 12 years.

    Denholm will assume her new role in early 2017, and will be based in Sydney. Acting COO Brendon Riley will return as group executive global enterprise and services while acting GES group executive David Burns will return as group MD network applications and services, Telstra said in filing Monday.

    “Robyn has been a senior executive and director in a range of complex technology environments which make her ideally qualified for the role, leading a highly capable team within Telstra,” Telstra CEO Andrew Penn said. “She also brings strong understanding of the Australian market and Telstra as the leading network provider, as Juniper has been a valued partner of Telstra.”

    Australian-born Denholm was most recently EVP, CFO and COO of Juniper Networks. She is a board member of renewable energy and electric vehicle company Tesla Motors and the Swiss robotics, power and automation technology company ABB.

    Denholm served at Juniper Networks from 2007 to mid-2016.  She joined Juniper after 11 years with Sun Microsystems most recently as senior vice president of corporate strategic planning.

    Hutchison Telecom HK appoints Cliff Woo as CEO, replacing Peter Wong

    Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited (HTHKH) has appointed Cliff Woo Chiu-man (pictured) as new chief executive and executive director, with effect from January 1, 2017.

    Woo, 62, will succeed Peter Wong King-fai, who will retire from his position on the same day, after working for the company for over 20 years.

    A 30-year telecoms veteran, Woo is currently serving as chief technology officer of Hutchison Asia Telecom Limited and director of Hutchison Telecommunications (Australia) Limited.
