    Vodafone Idea taps Ericsson for cloud packet core

    India’s Vodafone Idea has contracted Ericsson to deploy a cloud packet core to enhance its existing core network.

    The deployment forms part of the operator’s ongoing network modernization program. It is aimed at enabling speedier introduction of new services and providing full-service continuity over the operator’s network.

    Under the agreement, Vodafone Idea will deploy Ericsson core network applications and network functions including the Ericsson virtual Evolved Packet Gateway (vEPG), Service Aware Policy Controller (vSAPC) and Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVi) solutions.

    The NFVi solution is designed to enable operators to deploy virtual telecom, OSS, BSS, IT and media applications at a low total cost of ownership.

    “Data consumption in India is growing rapidly and users are looking for new, richer experiences every day,” Vodafone Idea CTO Vishant Vara said.

    “At Vodafone Idea, we endeavor to stay ahead of the curve by investing in technologies and solutions to address the evolving demands of millions of our customers in India. We are confident that Ericsson’s vEPC solution will enable us to meet our strategic goals.”

    Ericsson head of digital services for SEA, Oceania and India Alvise Carlton added that the project is one of the vendor’s largest virtual evolved packet core deployments globally to date.

    “This will not only provide VIL the scale and reach to address the growing data traffic levels in India, but the advanced cloud infrastructure will also enable VIL to tap new revenue streams in SMEs and IoT.”

    Huawei completes 5G NSA core network test

    Huawei said it has become the first vendor to pass China’s 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) core network test, which constitutes an important part of the country’s 5G R&D trials for operators that hope to deploy 5G commercial networks early and quickly.

    The test, which covers key core network technologies and service processes, was part of the third phase trial organized by the IMT-2020 Promotion Group and conducted at the Beijing lab of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT).

    The test is based on the commercial 5G core network solution released by Huawei at the Mobile World Congress 2018. Technologies tested include: gateway selection in control and user plane separation (CUPS) architecture, 5G ultra-high bandwidth, dual-connection to LTE and new radio (NR), independent billing for 5G NR, and terminal access management.

    The key service processes include: terminal registration, service requests, mobility management, and session management.

    China’s three major carriers – China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom – as well as the network technology workgroup of the CAICT were involved in the network test, Huawei said.

    As of year-end 2017, Huawei had built 15 pre-commercial 5G core sites around the globe.

    China Mobile HK migrates to cloud core network

    China Mobile Hong Kong has migrated its services to an NFV-based cloud core network provided by Huawei.

    The operator has migrated its legacy networks to cloud networks based on the 3GPP system. Working closely with Huawei, the migration took only around six months, according to CMHK CEO Sean Lee.

    “The synergy between CMHK and Huawei is expected to ensure our entire cloud networks will be smoothly put into commercial use, bringing better service to our customers,” he said.

    CMHK’s new cloud core network provides services for more than 20 network systems including IMS, evolved packet core, mobile number portability, HSS/HLR and mobile switching center server.

    Lee said the migration will pave the way for CMHK’s eventual migration to 5G based on the Network 2020 vision.

    “On CMHK’s cloud network, network elements in [the] IMS, packet switched and circuit switched domains are co-deployed. VoLTE, VoWiFi and mobile data services are co-operated,” Huawei VP of cloud core networks Wang Yonge said.

    “Compared to legacy core networks, cloud core networks are more elastic and robust. CMHK and Huawei are jointly developing new technologies, such as network slicing and edge computing to lead the transformation to cloud networks.”

    News of the completion of the project comes shortly after CK Hutchison’s Three UK announced plans to deploy a fully integrated cloud native core network in collaboration with Nokia.

    Dtac taps Nokia to revamp core network

    Thailand’s Dtac has become the market’s first mobile operator to implement an SDN-ready IP/optical network using equipment from Nokia.

    Dtac is implementing the technology to replace its existing IP core routing and DWDM infrastructure, in order to achieve the capacity to serve Thailand’s fast-growing mobile subscriber base.

    The deployment also includes Nokia’s security gateway for Dtac’s LTE network.

    “Over the last two years we’ve seen demand for mobile broadband grow exponentially,” Dtac CTO Prathet Tankuranun said.

    “As we prepare for future advanced technologies we’ve made a strategic choice for an SDN-ready IP/Optical network because it gives us the control and agility needed to run an efficient network that can rapidly adjust to evolving demand patterns. This deployment with Nokia is an important next step in our migration towards full SDN automation.”

    Nokia Thiland head Sebastien Laurent added that the deployment “provides the foundation for an SDN-centric network and will allow dtac to implement on-demand services while also easing operation and maintenance demands.”
