  • Crocs shoes lose EU patent in court blow

Crocs shoes lose EU patent in court blow

An EU court ruled on Wednesday that the design of Crocs shoes cannot be patented in Europe in a blow to the US-based maker of the plastic clogs.

Luxembourg-based judges upheld a 2016 decision by the EU’s intellectual property office to cancel the patent because Crocs made the design public before registering it.

Crocs have sold 300 million pairs around the world, according to their manufacturers, attracting devotees because of their comfort and seeming indestructibility, but attracting mockery too for their chunky shape.

“The General Court confirms the cancellation of registration of Crocs’ design because it was made available to the public before its registration,” said the General Court of the European Union, the bloc’s second highest court.

It said Crocs were originally granted a patent in the EU in 2005, but a rival French shoe manufacturer, Gigi Diffusion appealed against the decision in 2013.

The EU patent office agreed, saying that Crocs’ design had already been made public in 2003 on its website and at a boat show in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and therefore “lacked novelty”.

Under EU regulations any design which has been made public in the 12 months prior to a patent application cannot be given a patent.

Balenciaga’s Platform Crocs sold out in a blink of an eye

In October 2017, Balenciaga unveiled an official footwear collaboration with Crocs on the runway in Paris. The Crocs, naturally, divided opinion.

Critics thought that Balenciaga was trying too hard and collaborated for the wrong reasons, while others might not have loved the design but appreciated the attempt at something different.

Now, several months on, the Balenciaga Platform Clogs are officially available for pre-order on sites like Barneys New York.

Just moments after Balenciaga x Crocs’ Platform Clogs were made available to pre-order online, both pairs in the drop, sold out.

They come in two colors, pink and “toast,” which is more like a dark tan color. A rather genius customization option in the form of pins can be attached to the perforated upper.

Retail is $850 because, well, they’re still Balenciaga, so if you’re flush with cash and want to be what might resemble a walking meme, head to Barneys via our links below to secure yourself a pair. Crocs start expanding in India, opens store in Jaipur

Crocs, the US footwear brand, as promised has started its retail expansion drive in India and opened a store at MGF Metropolitan Mall in the city of Jaipur.

The store features a full line-up of the brand’s flats, loafers, sneakers, flip flops and its signature trademark clogs

On the opening of the new store, CEO of Crocs India, Deepak Chhabra said the company wants to reach a customer looking for both comfort and style and opening in Jaipur is key as the city is an attraction for tourists.

Crocs is expected to open more stores in the coming months across the country as the company had earlier said that it will open 50 standalone stores this calendar year to drive growth, especially in East and North-East part of the country.

Chhabra in a statement earlier had said that the company is growing at over 35 per cent year-on-year and expects to double its India business within three years.

The company globally sold 55 million pairs of shoes in 2016 while in India it sold 1.5 million pairs.

At present, the company has 1,000 points of sales including over 35 exclusive stores. The brand’s new campaign Come as You Are with brand ambassadors John Cena, Drew Barrymore, Yoona and Henry Lau is celebrating the uniqueness of individuals and aims to inspire everyone to be comfortable in their own shoes.

  • Crocs store is closing door

    Crocs store is closing door

One in four Crocs stores will be closed globally as the maker of the world’s ugliest shoes plots a survival plan.

The store cull was announced along with another quarterly loss: the shoemaker finished its last three months US$44.4 million in the red, albeit a better performance than the same period a year earlier when it lost $73.9 million.

Global sales were down 10.2 per cent to $187.4 million but in Asia the company says its retail sales declined by a whopping 16.6 per cent.

Total Asian revenue was $68.8 million, down 9.8 per cent year-on-year, with wholesale revenues down 5.3 per cent (explained as a result of the sale of the South African business in April 2016). Retail sales in Asia declined 16.6 percent, despite the opening of nine stores since 2015. Online sales declined 7 per cent in Asia, which Crocs says was the result of weak sales in China on Singles’ Day.

In Europe, revenue was down 14.2 per cent.

As it restructures to ensure its survival, Crocs CEO Gregg Ribatt will step down on June 1, to be replaced by Andrew Rees who has for the past two years been president. The two roles will now be combined and Ribatt will remain on the company’s board.

Rees told an analysts’ briefing that customers are responding favorably to new colors and prints added to the core Crocs molded product line.

“We’ve also confirmed the importance of any newness to our iconic molded footwear through new color and graphic introductions, and through the expanded use of licensed characters,” he said.

“Our spring/summer 2017 collection rolled out to warm-weather doors in November and early reads are encouraging. Going forward, our innovation and newness will be most heavily concentrated on core clogs and sandal, slips and slides where we see the greatest opportunity for growth.”

Crocs is also banking on the endorsement of the product by celebrities Drew Barrymore, John Cena, Yoona Lim and Henry Lau who will feature in the brand’s latest Come As You Are marketing campaign launching in April.

    Full year figures

Crocs’ full-year picture was nowhere near as bad as the last quarter’s. Total sales were $1.04 billion, down only a little from the $1.09 billion of a year earlier. On a constant currency basis, revenues declined 4.7 per cent.

The company recorded a full-year net loss of $16.5 million, far better than the $83.2 million of 2015. Excluding non-recurring charges, the adjusted loss was $26.9 million.

Rabat says Crocs has been reshaped into a company that :”functions more efficiently and effectively” and is in “a far better place now than two years ago”.

“And while the operational work is critical, it is not yet, and I emphasise yet, translating into the financial gains we continue to believe are achievable.”

Since 2014, Crocs has halved its SKU count, boosted the appeal of core sellers and added new collections.

Once the store cull is complete in 2018, Crocs will operate about 400 outlets, adding $35 million to its bottom line in 2019. At the end of 2016 it had 558 stores.

Carrie Teffner, Crocs EVP and CFO, says that given volatile market conditions, the company is not setting mid-term revenue and margin targets.

“That said, we continue to believe that… longer term, the business can deliver EBIT margins in the 10 per cent range.”

  • Smartphones outpace tablets in Asian eCommerce

Smartphones outpace tablets in Asian eCommerce

For the first time, 34 per cent of browser-based online transactions globally are now made on a mobile device, compared to slightly more than 30 per cent last quarter.

And smartphones are starting to outpace tablets.

These were key findings of the fourth quarter edition of the Mobile Payments Index by Global payments technology company Adyen, which tracks mobile payment data from browser-based transactions across its client base and monitors Asian eCommerce shopping patterns.

It also found that many consumers in Asia are increasingly using mobile devices to shop online. This is being driven particularly by such major payments methods as Alipay, JCB and UnionPay. JCB had the highest share (54 per cent) of mobile payments on the Adjen platform, up from 47 per cent the previous quarter. Alipay increased to 44 per cent (up from 35 per cent) while UnionPay reached 31 per cent (from 23 per cent).

“The checkout stage of the shopper journey is not the end, but the beginning of an on-going relationship with the consumer,” says Adyen Asia Pacific president Warren Hayashi. “Merchants with a frictionless mobile checkout experience are driving repeat traffic, especially in Asia.”

For the first time, the index shows that smartphones have overtaken tablets as the preferred device for online shopping – 17.5 per cent on smartphone against 16 per cent on tablet, compared to 14 per cent and 17 per cent respectively the previous quarter.

When it comes to mobile payments globally, the trend to use smartphones rather than tablets continues for the 10th consecutive quarter. Last quarter this share was up 2 per cent to 68 per cent on smartphone versus 32 per cent on tablet.

Smartphone use far outweighed tablet in Asia, with 29.5 per cent of online payments on a smartphone compared to 4.5 per cent on a tablet.

In terms of average transaction value, iPad led the way for the first time at $107, edging out not just smartphones but also desktop/laptop, the traditional leader (at $106). Following were Android tablets at $86, iPhone at $83 then Android smartphones at $73.

Adyen has been tracking the evolution of mobile payments since June 2013. The index is based on its global browser-based mobile payment transaction data. It does not track in-app mobile payments. With its headquarters in Amsterdam and San Francisco, Adyen serves more than 4500 businesses, customers including Airbnb, Booking.com, Crocs, Dropbox, Facebook, KLM, Mango, Netflix, Spotify and Yelp.

Yue Yuen sales rise on retail rollout

The world’s largest branded athletic and casual footwear manufacturer and retailer Yue Yuen Industrial says retail and wholesale sales of sportswear in Greater China rose 19.6 per cent in the first nine months of this year, due to an expanding store network.
