    PLDT, Smart Lauds Government’s New Cybercrime Lab

    Philippines’ major telecoms group, Smart and PLDT said it welcomes the country’s new Digital Forensics Platform and Laboratory launched by the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, or ICC.

    The new facility aims to improve the government’s initiatives to fight cybercrime, especially, online sexual abuse and exploitation of children.

    Following the unveiling of this new laboratory, the group said that it has strengthened its cyber security systems as it continues its cooperation with the local government in fighting across the digital landscape.

    The new facility will help CICC to work closely with other law enforcement agencies in the country to conduct comprehensive digital and forensic investigations.

    The group’s Chief Information Security Officer, Angel Redoble, meanwhile stressed that they will continue to address these challenges in the cyberspace.

    “Children became more vulnerable to cyberattacks after the pandemic forced them to stay at home and get online to study and connect with friends, and cyber criminals have also been targeting them. We have fortified our cyber defenses and strengthened our coordination with the government to make the internet safer for kids.”

    According to PLDT and Smart, they have beefed up their efforts to support the government in its crackdown on online child abuse. By the end of May this year, it has blocked nearly 300,000 URLs linked to these criminal activities.

    The group has also collaborated with other private and public sectors in urging the country’s president to sign into to law the bill against online child sexual abuse before he steps down from office on June 30.

    Citing the growing cost of cybercrime in the economy, the Australian government has directed the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) intelligence agency to utilize its offensive cyber capabilities to disrupt, degrade, deny and deter organized offshore cyber criminals.

    Currently used to help target, disrupt and defeat terrorist organizations such as Daesh, the offense capability is subject to stringent legal oversight and is consistent with Australia’s obligations under international law, the government announced.

    It will function as part of the Government’s crime-fighting arsenal and contribute to the broader strategy of preventing and shutting down safe havens for offshore cyber criminals. However, cyber security and law enforcement measures will continue to sit at the forefront of Australia’s response to cybercrime threats.

    This directive follows the Government’s public acknowledgement of ASD’s offensive cyber-capabilities when Australia’s Cyber Security Strategy was launched in April 2016, for which the Government contributed A$230 million.

    Additionally, the Defence White Paper contains up to A$400 million to enhance the cyber-capabilities of Australia’s defence forces.

    Cybercrime is conservatively estimated to cost the Australian economy A$1 billion ($766.1 million) annually. The recent WannaCry and Petya ransomware attacks have affected governments, businesses and individuals around the world. With constantly evolving strategies, cyber-criminals are increasingly targeting businesses directly.

    Each year thousands of internet users fall victim to a cybercrime that leaves them out of pocket. Research from Kaspersky Lab reveals that over half (52%) of internet users who’ve lost money at the hands of cybercriminals have only got some, or none, of their stolen funds back.

    With the variety and sophistication of online financial threats against consumers growing, losses from online fraud, identity theft and hacking are now running at billions a year. And with many cases going unreported, the true economic cost is likely to be significantly higher.

    The research reveals how costly these attacks are for internet users, and how lucrative they’ve become for cybercriminals. On average, internet users lose $476 per attack and one-in-ten people surveyed said they lost more than $5,000.

    A large majority of internet users say they conduct financial operations online (81%) and just under half (44%) store financial data on their connected devices.

    As more users go online to manage their finances, more cybercriminals are looking for opportunities to cash in, making it important for users to have robust internet security in place to protect themselves and their money. Nevertheless, only 60% of internet users protect all their devices.

    Attitudes to online safety could be influenced by users mistakenly thinking lost money will be automatically refunded to them. Almost half (45%) say that they assume they will be reimbursed by banks for financial cybercrime without any problems, but as the survey shows, over half (52%) of people affected haven’t had all their stolen money returned.

    “Cybercriminals are continually looking for new ways to exploit and defraud consumers and that’s why it’s important for internet users to be on their guard at all times,” says Vyacheslav Zakorzhevsky, Head of the Anti-Malware Research Team at Kaspersky Lab.

    “Cybercriminals can conduct financial crimes via malware, phishing and more. Don’t assume you will always get all your money back if you become a target and funds are stolen from you. The best way to safeguard your finances online is to make sure you don’t become a victim, and for that we recommend specialist software that protects your identity and keeps sensitive data out of the hands of the cybercriminals.”

    Cybercrime rising Asia as cashless payments rise

    Cashless payments are growing rapidly in Asia-Pacific and so is cybercrime, costing the region an estimated $US 81 billion.

    With new combinations of malware customised for local markets, phishing and social engineering attacks as well increasing e-commerce and ATM fraud, businesses are increasingly at risk for payment data theft, according to the PCI Security Standards Council.

    Singapore’s cards and payments market is one of the most competitive and attractive in the Asia-Pacific region. Already, 69 per cent of consumer spending in Singapore is made through electronic payments.

    It’s against this backdrop that global payment and cybersecurity experts met at the PCI Asia-Pacific Community Meeting in Singapore to collaborate on helping businesses prevent, detect and respond to cyberattacks that can lead to payment data breaches and fraud.

    “We simply must work together to advance payment security,” PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) international director Jeremy King told attendees.

    “New technologies are driving adoption of cashless, mobile and digital commerce in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region, and it’s critical that we ensure consumers remain confident in the security of their financial information with every payment transaction. As payments evolve, businesses must prioritise data protection with robust security standards and practices.”

    The PCI SSC has reinforced its mission to foster secure transactions globally and emphasised that as new cyber threats emerge, and advances in technology change the way payments are conducted, PCI Standards will evolve to protect the next generation of payments. Regional and industry experts speaking at the event included representatives from the PCI Security Standards Council, Interpol, Verizon, Diners Club Singapore, Foregenix, Beijing Information Technology and Pen Test Partners.

    Presentations and discussions addressed a mix of regional and global topics ranging from new threats via the Internet of Things; cybersecurity trends in Asia-Pacific; Point-to-Point Encryption for protecting payment data throughout the entire processing environment; preventing skimming at ATMs and the future of mobile and digital commerce.

    PCI SSC GM Stephen Orfei said the Asia-Pacific region has made tremendous advances in payment security in the past decade.

    “More and more companies in the region are making cybersecurity a top priority.  With the rapid growth in mobile payments, now, more than ever, we must join forces to devalue payment data and make it useless to criminals.  It is very encouraging to see industry and public-private partnerships in Asia-Pacific working together to address the ever expanding cyber threats from around the world.”

    The PCI Security Standards Council is a global forum that is responsible for the development, management, education, and awareness of the PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and other standards that increase payment data security.

    Key focus areas at the PCI Asia Pacific Community Meeting included:

    • Devaluing data with point-to-point encryption: More and more solution providers in Asia-Pacific are encouraged to adopt the PCI Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE) Standard to provide solutions that devalue data and simplify security and PCI DSS compliance efforts for businesses.
    • Simplifying security for small merchants: The PCI SSC Small Merchant Task Force urged banks, technology providers and security assessors with small business customers to adopt and disseminate newly published PCI Payment Protection Resources for Small Merchants.
    • Improving security of online and mobile payments with stronger authentication: PCI SSC chief technology officer Troy Leach discussed the newly released device standards (PTS POI v5 and HSM v3) that support online and mobile payment security. PCI SSC is collaborating with EMVCo to support 3-D Secure 2.0 (3DS 2.0), which provides a way for consumers to directly authenticate their card with the card issuer when shopping online.
