Daegu citizens use social media to support restaurants hit by coronavirus

Citizens of South Korean city Daegu are working together on social media to prop up local businesses hit hard by the rapidly growing coronavirus outbreak.

A Facebook page introducing restaurants in Daegu posted Friday that many establishments are losing money due to the coronavirus epidemic. These restaurants saw their sales fall and are struggling to use up food and ingredients.

The Facebook page posted a message saying, “If there are restaurants who need help using up ingredients, please let us know. We will help as best as we can.”

Citizens are taking steps to make sure that restaurant food going unsold due to a drop in customer numbers doesn’t go to waste.

When such information was made public, inquiries were made by various local restaurants, including steak restaurants and cafes that sell desserts and beverages.

Site managers received and posted the remaining materials, prices, contact information and photos from restaurant owners. Some posts also showed a welcoming phrase, “Used up all the ingredients.”

There were also citizen reports to publicize the situation at traditional markets, where many elderly vendors are not familiar with the internet.

One citizen said: “There are a lot of fruits at Seomun Market stalls and so on. Delivery is also possible,” and provided the site manager with the location and the phone number.

Other Facebook pages that deliver various news in the region have also joined the initiative.

Homeplus Special to open first store in Daegu

Korean discount store chain Homeplus has opened a bulk products and grocery store hybrid called Homeplus Special in Daegu.

The new concept store is housed in the original Homeplus outlet that opened 20 years ago, now converted to operate the new big-box-plus-retail model following underwhelming sales figures and strong rivalry from industry competitors.

The new hybrid-store concept will allow the brand to target both individual shoppers and businesses that buy in bulk, and aims to eliminate seasonal price differences with blanket, year-round discounts.

A Homeplus spokesperson said the business plans to convert 15 branches into Homeplus Special stores this year. Another outlet opened yesterday in Busan.

The plan for new Daegu Shinsegae

Korean retail giant Shinsegae Department Store’s new Daegu Shinsegae is a large-scale shopping and entertainment complex connected to a transportation hub in the southern city.

Covering more than 103,000 sqm, it is Shinsegae Department Store‘s second large-scale branch outside of Seoul, following the Centum City branch in Busan. As well as traditional shopping areas, Daegu Shinsegae has a rooftop aquarium, indoor and outdoor mini theme parks, an art gallery and a concert hall.

Shinsegae invested KW880 billion (US$755 million) in the project, the largest amount for any single Shinsegae Department Store branch.

Daegu Shinsegae shares four floors with the new Dong-Daegu Intermodal Transfer Center, the culmination of a five-year project together with the Daegu Metropolitan City Government and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. It offers access to KTX and subway trains as well as buses.

“We hope to use the transfer centre to create a network of consumers in nearby cities as we have to target consumers across the north Gyeongsang province area rather than just focussing on Daegu,” says store CEO Jang Jae-young.

“Our market research found that Daegu consumers are unwilling to travel to other cities like Busan in order to shop, but on the other hand consumers from other cities are willing to come to Daegu,” says Daegu Shinsegae deputy chief Hong Jung-pyo.

He says the centre will be different from the Shinsegae branches in Seoul, which gain most of their revenue from luxury products. Its strategy instead will be to attract a more mass consumer base with its family entertainment and young casual attractions.

More than revenue, however, Jang says Daegu Shinsegae will first focus on smooth running and working with the surrounding community.

Shinsegae bets big on rooftop entertainment

Shinsegae Department Store’s newest location in Daegu is set to open next month, and it will include a massive 56,000-square-foot aquarium and indoor park on its roof, the company revealed Wednesday.

The move is a bid to attract more visitors with family-friendly entertainment options. Incorporating more amusement facilities into its department stores and shopping malls has been Shinsegae’s main strategy in breaking through a prolonged slump in the retail business.

The aquarium, which will feature some 200 types of animals including rare ones like manatees, sea lions and elephant seals, will occupy the ninth floor of the store. An indoor park with oversize furniture a la Alice in Wonderland and an outdoor plaza with plants and fountains will be adjacent to the aquarium.

“The Daegu branch will be different from the concept of existing department store and focus on providing value and experience to visitors,” Shinsegae Department Store CEO Jang Jae-young said. “We will become a landmark in the North Gyeongsang region and attract people who were originally planning to go to an amusement park, zoos or baseball games during the weekend with our diverse cultural facilities.”

This is the first time a Korean department store is installing an aquarium on the top floor. The heavy weight of water tanks requires most aquariums to be located at ground or on lower levels. Shinsegae, though, has defied convention by placing all its entertainment facilities on the roof.

“The construction cost is double compared to when building [an aquarium] on ground level, but we boldly invested to provide more pleasure to visitors,” Shinsegae said in a statement.

A 600-seat concert hall and art gallery that will host exhibitions and auctions are also in the space.

The Daegu location is the last of Shinsegae’s six-projects initiative announced early this year, which also includes the recently-opened Starfield Hanam in Gyeonggi, the largest retail complex in Korea.

CEO Jang said the series of projects marks Shinsegae’s “quantum jump” that it has been preparing for over three years, and once complete, its retail businesses will be “free of market share competition.”

Shinsegae Group in massive expansion plan

Shinsegae Group says it will invest 4.1 trillion won ($3.4 billion) this year and hire 14,400 new staff to expand its retail business and revitalise the “sagging domestic economy”.

“The overall retail sector has been struggling to deal with continued sluggish domestic consumption,” a Shinsegae Group official said. “But we decided to invest more and hire more workers to find new growth engines and help inject vigor into the stagnant domestic market.”

Shinsegae, Korea’s largest retail group, will open 10 shopping centres across the country in 2016, including the massive Hanam Union Square southeast of Seoul, built on a 117,000 sqm site and employing 5000 staff. That project is worth 1 trillion won alone,  (US$832 million).

The company’s discount arm E-Mart, is building a logistics centre in Gimpo, in the Gyeonggi province, to support an expanded online business as it ramps up competition with rivals including Coupang. It also plans to increase the size of many of its existing stores as well as opening new shops in Vietnam and other Southeast asian markets.

Three new Shinsegae department stores will open their doors – in Hanam, Gimhae (in South Gyeongsang Province) and in Daegu. Stores in southern Seoul and downtown Busan will be expanded.

And the company’s Shinsegae Duty Free operation is putting the finishing touches on an upmarket duty free store inside its downtown Seoul department store. That shop is scheduled to open in May.

“Business conditions at home and abroad have largely been unfavorable for us,” said Shinsegae Group vice chairman Chung Yong-jin.

“We expect to bear fruits this year from our investments in multipurpose shopping centers, duty free shops and department stores. We will continue to invest and hire workers as a leading retailer to help bolster the domestic economy,” he said.
