  • Apple’s Key Supplier Tata Boosts Security Measures Amid Dark Web Data Leak Investigation

Apple’s Key Supplier Tata Boosts Security Measures Amid Dark Web Data Leak Investigation

Tata Electronics, a primary supplier for tech giant Apple in India, has increased its internal security measures following a potential leak of confidential client files on the dark web, according to a source from Tata and two industry representatives.

In response to the incident, Tata has engaged an international consultant to perform a forensic audit. The company has also reported the incident to the Indian government and its customer base. The source from Tata chose to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the situation.

The cybercrime group known as World Leaks claimed responsibility for uploading over 200,000 files onto the dark web. These files allegedly include design documents for components used by both Apple and Tesla, another of Tata’s clients. The authenticity of the data remains unverified.

Tata acknowledged the occurrence of a “cybersecurity incident” but assured that its operations were not affected, without providing further details.

In addition to Apple and Tesla, the leaked data is believed to include at least 16 files and folders from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) and 23 from Qualcomm. Both companies supply parts for iPhones.

    Increased Security Measures

Following the breach, Tata Electronics strengthened security protocols across all its facilities and offices. Remote access to sensitive internal tools, such as those used for placing purchase orders, was limited to a select group of employees. Prior to the incident, these tools were more accessible. The updated protocols apply across Tata Electronics and are not limited to specific factories.

The investigation into the breach continues, with Apple’s security team reportedly collaborating closely with Tata. The security enhancements include stricter regulations for accessing Tata’s official network from outside the company’s premises.

Implications for Tata and its Clients

Tata Electronics, led by former Intel and Applied Materials executive Randhir Thakur, is a critical part of Apple’s strategy to expand iPhone production outside China. However, the breach poses a significant setback to Apple’s supply chain. Tata is also facing scrutiny over alleged farmland contamination near one of its iPhone parts plants in India.

World Leaks claimed to have published more than 204,341 files containing Tata Electronics data, amounting to over 630.4 gigabytes. The exposed documents include purported “product reliability test” details of a TSMC component and mechanical specifications for a power management integrated circuit from Qualcomm.

Despite the challenges, India is expected to manufacture 26% of the world’s iPhones by 2026, a significant increase from the 6% it produced four years ago, as reported by research firm Counterpoint.

    Questions & Answers

How has Tata Electronics responded to the data breach?
Tata Electronics has increased internal security measures, limited remote access to sensitive systems, and engaged an international consultant for a forensic audit.

What does the leaked data purportedly contain?
The data allegedly contains design documents from Apple and Tesla, and files from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co and Qualcomm.

What are the potential impacts of the breach on Tata and its clients?
The breach could interrupt Apple’s supply chain and increase scrutiny on Tata, which is already facing allegations of farmland contamination in India.

Reliance Retail Expands Jiomart’s Reach With 600 New Dark Stores Across India

Reliance Retail has expanded its network in India by opening over 600 dark stores. These new outlets are in support of the company’s rapidly growing quick commerce service called JioMart, which boasts a delivery promise of under 30 minutes.

    What are Dark Stores?

Dark stores, as the name suggests, are not traditional retail outlets. They are small, localized fulfillment centers that are used to handle online orders, either for delivery or pickup. They have been redesigned from conventional retail spaces to facilitate speedier order processing. The primary distinguishing feature is that they do not cater to walk-in customers.

Reliance Retail strategically selected the locations for its new facilities in both urban and suburban areas. This strategic placement is intended to improve speed and efficiency in serving the company’s expanding online clientele.

    JioMart’s Unique Service Models

JioMart app provides its users with three distinct service models. First is the quick delivery model that promises delivery within 30 minutes. Second is the scheduled delivery model that offers a wider variety of products. The third model is subscription-based, providing early morning doorstep delivery of daily essentials.

The JioMart app faces competition from other quick commerce platforms in India such as Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and BigBasket.

    Reliance Retail’s Competitive Advantage

Dinesh Taluja, Reliance Retail’s CFO, stated that the company’s extensive scale and physical presence give it a competitive edge over others in the industry.

“We operate through a network of over 2000 stores, covering more than 4000 postal codes. This gives us a much broader reach than any other quick commerce player,” he explained.

  • Consumer Reports urges dark chocolate makers to reduce lead, cadmium levels

Consumer Reports urges dark chocolate makers to reduce lead, cadmium levels

Last month, Consumer Reports said 23 of the 28 dark chocolate bars it tested included potentially harmful levels of lead, cadmium or both for people who eat more than one ounce of chocolate a day.

Five had elevated levels of both metals: two from Theo, and one each from Hershey-owned Lily’s, Mondelez-owned Green & Black’s, and Trader Joe’s.

Consumer Reports said many consumers eat dark chocolate for its potential health benefits and relatively low sugar levels, but “there’s nothing healthy about ingesting heavy metals.”

The chocolate makers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The National Confectioners Association, a trade group, said the California health guidelines that Consumer Reports used and considered “the most protective available,” are “not food safety standards” and that chocolate remains safe to eat.

Consumers have been sued at least nine times by Trader Joe’s over its dark chocolate since Consumer Reports released its study.

Hershey’s and Mondelez have also been sued over the magazine’s findings, as have other chocolate makers, including Godiva and Lindt (LISN.S).

  • Amazon brings Dark and Light modes to Alexa app on iOS devices

Amazon brings Dark and Light modes to Alexa app on iOS devices

An important update is now rolling out to Alexa app users on iOS devices. The update adds support for both Light and Dark modes, allowing users to switch between them on the fly, as well as Dynamic Type support.

The update is meant to further improve Alexa’s accessibility features. Thanks to the newly added Dynamic Type support, iOS users will no longer have to choose the size of the text within the Alexa app. Instead, the app will now automatically choose the text-size set at a system level.

As far as the new Dark/Light modes go, the new feature lets Alexa app users switch between them or let the app handle usage of the modes automatically. By default, the Alexa app will switch appearance at sunrise and sunset, but users can permanently set the app to either Light or Dark Mode from the iOS’s Settings menu.

Previously, the Alexa app did have a dark mode, but it didn’t display a completely black background whereas the new one added in the update does a better job at mimicking the black color. The updated Alexa app has already been uploaded to the App Store, so feel free to download it to benefit from the recent changes.

  • Facebook testing Dark mode for iOS

Facebook testing Dark mode for iOS

What do you do when your social-media site is under attack because of your policies that allow offensive posts and posts filled with hatred to ferment until they blow up? Why you start pushing out Dark mode for the mobile version of your site. Of course, we are talking about Facebook. The social-media giant has lost a lot of high-rollers from its advertising roster over the last week including Verizon. The nation’s largest carrier spent nearly $1.9 million on Facebook and Instagram ads from May 22nd to June 20th. As more and more big-name advertisers pulled out, Facebook’s stock cratered leaving co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg some $7 billion poorer on Friday alone.

Facebook has started rolling out Dark mode for “a small percentage of users globally right now.” Dark Mode inverts the typical black text on a white background to black text on a white background. This prevents users from having the white-hot background irritate their eyes at night or in a dark room. On phones using an AMOLED display, it can save battery life since OLED panels create the color black by turning off pixels in the appropriate area. Pixels that are turned off do not draw on the phone’s battery.

There have been rumors for years about a Dark mode for Facebook and occasionally Facebook has tested such a feature. The most recent story we wrote about it was posted three weeks ago. Meanwhile, Dark mode has surfaced on Facebook Messenger, Facebook Lite, WhatsApp, and Instagram. It is also offered to users of the desktop (web) version of the site.

A Facebook user who shared an image of Facebook in Dark mode on Twitter was apparently using the first developer beta of iOS 14. To see if you have Dark mode on your Facebook app, go to settings and if a Dark mode button appears, congratulations. You have Dark mode for Facebook. Unfortunately, we did not get Dark mode yet on our iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 13.5.1 and our Pixel 2 XL running Android 11 beta 1. Unless Facebook really does broaden the distribution of this update, it will turn out to be another disappointment for those Dark mode fans who want the UI for their Facebook app.

  • Google Search gets dark mode settings toggle for iOS and Android

Google Search gets dark mode settings toggle for iOS and Android

A tweet from the Google SearchLiaison reveals that starting today and for the remainder of the week, Google will be disseminating an update for the Google Search app for Android 10, iOS 12, and iOS 13. By default, the app will follow the system-wide setting of your phone. So if your iOS or Android device is set on dark mode, that is how the app will appear by default.
You can override the default settings.
Let’s say that you have your Android phone set on dark mode system-wide but for some reason, you like the look of the Google Search app in light mode better. You can change this by going into the app’s settings to make the adjustment. On Android 10 or on iOS 12/13 you can open the Google Search app and tap the three-dot More tab at the bottom right corner of the screen. From there, tap on Settings > General, scroll down to Theme, and change the setting. This will not affect your system-wide settings. While our Pixel 2 XL received the update, it has not yet hit our Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max.
Dark mode inverts the UI on the phone from dark text on a white background to white text on a dark background. It prevents the user and any passersby from having their retinas melted by the blaring white background light during the night or in a dark room. It also helps extend battery life a little on phones with an AMOLED display. That’s because such panels create the color black by turning off pixels in the appropriate location. Pixels that are turned off don’t use the phone’s battery, so the more black on the screen, the less energy the phone is consuming.
If you haven’t received the update yet, check back in later during the week. Remember, Google says that it will be rolling out the update for the rest of the week.
  • Beta version of popular Google app gets Dark Mode for all Android users

Beta version of popular Google app gets Dark Mode for all Android users

Another reason to use Dark Mode is to preserve the battery life on handsets that sport an AMOLED display. That’s because such panels create the color black by turning off the pixels in the appropriate area of the screen. Pixels that are turned off do not draw on the phone’s battery, saving some power. Dark Mode has become so popular that both iOS and Android now allow users to enable it system-wide.
To become a beta tester for the Google app, head over to this Google support page and follow the directions. You can only have one version of the Google app installed at one time, and if you’re unhappy being a beta tester you can always return to the public version of the app.
Once you sign up as a beta tester for the Google app on your Android phone, you can turn on Dark Mode by going to Settings > General > Theme > select Dark or System Default. On phones running Android 10, this means that you can choose to have the Google app in Light Mode all of the time, Dark Mode all of the time, or have it match the system setting. On phones running an earlier version of Android, go to Settings > General > Theme > select Dark or Set by Battery Saver. On pre-Android 10 phones, this will give you the option of running the Google app in Light Mode, running the app in Dark Mode, or running the app in Dark Mode once the Battery Saver is turned on.
  • Facebook dark theme rolling out to more Android users

Facebook dark theme rolling out to more Android users

Facebook has been trying to implement the long-awaited dark theme into its Android app for many months, which isn’t something unusual. We’ve been hearing reports about the company’s struggles to finalize the feature, but it looks like Facebook’s endeavor turned into a marathon rather than a sprint.

Starting today, a lot more people have started to see the new dark theme in the Facebook app reports. We’re still not convinced that Facebook has finally nailed the feature for Android users and is making it available for everyone.

However, it’s a clear sign that the company is confident in the results and is rolling out the dark theme to more Android users, one of the final steps before a wider deployment. It’s probably just coincidence that a few days ago WhatsApp has finally managed to deliver the highly-anticipated dark theme to Android beta users.

We can’t promise you that you’ll see the new dark theme right away, but we’re certain it won’t take long until Facebook will start a wider roll-out of the feature, so stick around for more updates on the matter.

  • Two variations of Dark theme are reportedly being developed for the iOS version of WhatsApp

Two variations of Dark theme are reportedly being developed for the iOS version of WhatsApp

Whether you’re using Android or iOS, Dark theme is all the rage these days. Both Android 10 and iOS 13 feature system-wide Dark theme settings and more and more apps are including such an option. Why? for a couple of reasons, really. At night, or in a darkened room, the usual white background (with black text) can strain the user’s eyes and annoy innocent bystanders. In Dark theme, the black or gray background with white text isn’t as offensive to one’s eyes.

Besides saving your eyesight, there is another reason to toggle on Dark theme; for phones sporting an AMOLED display, using Dark theme can save some battery life. That’s because OLED panels create the color black by turning off all pixels in the appropriate area of the screen; pixels that are turned off do not draw energy from the battery. But keep in mind that to save battery life, the version of Dark theme used by an app must have a black background, not a dark gray one.

Now you might recall that back in March, the beta version of WhatsApp for Android received a Dark theme feature, but only on the settings page. Because this configuration used a version of Dark theme with a gray background, those testing it did not score any additional battery life. And in fact, Android users with the public version of WhatsApp have yet to receive the feature at this point in time. As for iOS users who employ WhatsApp, they could end up with one of two different versions of Dark theme according to WABetaInfo.com. For those of you unfamiliar with WhatsApp, it is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world and is owned by Facebook.

It seems that when Apple released the system-wide Dark theme for iOS 13, WhatsApp’s developers went back to the drawing board and came up with a new version of Dark theme from scratch. WABetaInfo.com says that two different configurations are being developed. One uses a dark black background while the second configuration uses a lighter gray. The first variant would seem to offer the best battery life savings. Both versions have the same configuration for Dark bubbles.

While it isn’t clear which one will be found on the iOS version of WhatsApp, the first configuration is the one that Facebook has decided to use for Instagram. The report does speculate that the app itself might choose from the two options depending on the settings of the iOS device that has the app installed.

Apparently, the Dark theme feature for WhatsApp is still being developed so it might be sometime before iOS and Android users get the opportunity to try it out on the public version of the respective apps.

  • Apple Music massive update adds dark mode

Apple Music massive update adds dark mode

Apple Music beta experimented with a couple of new features that were made available to testers not long ago. Starting today, all those features added to the beta app are available to everyone who uses the Apple Music app on their Android phones.

First and foremost, Apple Music now has a brand new dark mode, specially designed for low-light environments. It should be easy on the eyes and save some of your phone’s battery at the same time, so we strongly suggest using it whenever possible.

The next major improvement is Chromecast support, a new change that lets Apple Music users stream their favorite music to their TV or connected speakers. Two other new features have been implemented in this update: live lyrics and access to live radio stations.

The first allows Apple Music users to listen to their favorite music with perfectly timed lyrics, while the second new feature listed above will give them access to more than 100,000 broadcast radio stations from around the world.

All the new features and improvements mentioned above are available in the latest version of Apple Music for Android, which you can download now via Google Play Store.

  • Apple’s new Reminders app dark theme leaks out

Apple’s new Reminders app dark theme leaks out

Google slowly introduced us to the systemwide dark mode in Android Q by painting its own apps in morbid colors on a piecemeal basis. It brushed over the Phone app, Contacts, Calendar, Keep notes, you name it.

Apple, however, will be going all out with the iOS 13 dark mode, it seems, theming the launcher, toggles and system settings, as well as its stock apps. While we already rendered what dark mode would look like on iOS, based on some leaked info, we now have a real preview of one Apple default app’s dark theme.

The difference with the current rendering of the Reminder app is pretty striking, yet in sync with the dark theming that has been sweeping the industry lately, and now Apple is following suit with its own take on the matter. Gawk at what’s about to be unveiled just a few short hours from now.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2019 takes place June 3-7 in San Jose, and starts with a keynote later this morning at 10 AM Pacific Time where a bunch of new software updates – iOS 13, watchOS 6 and tvOS 13 – are to be introduced.

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 update adds Night mode improvements

Samsung Galaxy S10 update adds Night mode improvements

Samsung continues to improve the Galaxy S10 family with important new features and additional functionality. The upcoming update focuses on camera enhancements by adding a couple of nifty new features, as well as improvements to the phones’ performance when taking night shots.

As the title says, it appears that the Galaxy S10’s decent Night mode has just been upgraded to very good. According to SamMobile, the May security update improves the Night mode by allowing users to take much cleaner pictures in low-light conditions.

The differences are quite important as the update reduces noise that sometimes appears in night pictures. Moreover, Galaxy S10 users will now be able to use the Night mode with the ultra-wide camera, and even though noise still pops up in pictures taken with it, they are brighter and more detailed.

Another important improvement is the fact that you can take Live Focus photos with the telephoto lens, something that was only possible with the Galaxy S10 5G. The new addition will allow users to take bokeh pictures of large objects much easier.

Now, the update is currently being deployed in Switzerland as May 2019 security patch, but all three Galaxy S10 units should receive it worldwide in the coming days. We don’t have a release date for the United States, so you’ll just have to hope it will be rolled out sooner rather than later.

  • Google adds Dark mode to an Android Apps

Google adds Dark mode to an Android Apps

If your eyes feel strained at the end of every day, it could be because of Google’s Material Design, which it is using on many of its core apps. Because Material Design uses plenty of bright white background, it can be blinding to look at at night or in a dark room. Not only can the light hurt a phone user’s eyes, but it can also be annoying to other people in a dark room.

To combat this, Google started adding a Dark mode feature on apps that it gave a Material Design makeover. This changes the appearance of an app from having black text on a white background, to show white text on a black background. While many only use Dark mode at night or in a movie theater, others just like the look and keep the setting enabled on all compatible apps at all times.

And thanks to the use of the black background, those using a phone sporting an AMOLED screen could end up extending their battery life. The color black is created on an AMOLED display by turning off the RGB sub-pixels in the screen. This means that battery power is not needed to make an OLED panel display the color black. An LCD screen uses a backlight and when the color black is called for, the pixel turns opaque blocking the LED light from being seen on the display. In this case, there is still a draw on the battery to power the backlight.

The latest Android app to receive the Dark mode option is the Google Calculator app for Android. This is a must-have for the calculator, which has a huge white box that covers the top 40% of the screen. Dark mode can be found in version 7.6 of the utility app, although only version 7.5 is currently available from the Google Play Store. Once the new version is installed on your Android phone, open it and tap on the three-dot overflow menu in the upper right corner. You’ll see a box with several options; click on Choose theme. You can select from the regular retina melting Light theme, Dark theme or Set by Battery Saver. The latter is supposed to turn on the Dark theme once the battery saver feature is enabled.

Android Q and iOS 13 are both supposed to include a system-wide Dark mode. We should learn more at Google I/O and WWDC, which start May 7th and June 3rd, respectively.

  • Facebook Messenger dark mode now Available

Facebook Messenger dark mode now Available

Facebook has been widely testing Messenger’s dark mode for about a month now, and while the feature might have been available for everyone, you couldn’t enable it from the settings menu.

The only way to enable dark mode in Messenger was to send a crescent moon emoji in any chat, an Easter Egg activation available on both Android and iOS platforms.

Starting today, Facebook is making it easier for everyone to enable and disable the dark mode in Messenger by adding a toggle in the Settings menu. To activate the feature, simply tap your profile photo in Messenger to access settings and toggle dark mode to switch the chat from white to dark.

According to Facebook, the new dark mode for Messenger should provide lower brightness while maintaining the same contrast and vibrancy. The new feature should also remove the glare from the phone for use in low light situations, which should allow users to take advantage of Messenger regardless of where they are.

Facebook mentions that the dark mode is already available globally in Messenger settings, although some users may have to wait a few more days for the new feature to arrive.

  • WhatsApp closer to protecting the retinas of Androids

WhatsApp closer to protecting the retinas of Androids

There are two words that when seen in print by a smartphone user, will instantly get him or her to react by installing a particular app, or checking to see if an update has been received for an app already installed. Those two words are Dark Mode. This is a feature that reverses the typical black text on white background so that the screen shows white text on a black background.

Android Q is supposed to feature a system-wide Dark Mode in its final version, and iOS 13 is rumored to have the same thing. Google added the feature over the last year to a number of core Android apps that it updated to the retina melting Material Design. The latter features plenty of bright white in the background. Dark Mode, as we’ve just insinuated, helps protect users from a blinding white background that is intensified at night or in dark rooms. It also can save some battery life on phones with OLED screens since more black in the background means fewer energy consuming pixels need to be turned on. And many feel it just is a different and “cool” look.

Those with the beta version of WhatsApp installed on their Android phone have received version 2.19.82 of the app. The feature, while still under development, is hidden in the latest update, and right now it is being tested on the settings pages only. The iOS version of WhatsApp already has a Dark Mode. What might not seem obvious from the screenshots is that a dark gray, and not black background is being used by WhatsApp for its Dark Mode, which means you can scratch out the additional battery life you were hoping to achieve when the new feature is fully enabled on the regular Android version of the app.

Besides Dark Mode, the new beta update adds the name of an audio file to the bar found on the display that includes the play button.
