    Smart Mobility Consortium holds C-V2X demo in Hong Kong

    Hong Kong’s Smart Mobility Consortium has held the city’s first demonstration of the use of cellular vehicle to everything (C-V2X) technology for connected cars.

    The demonstration was conducted at Hong Kong Science Park as part of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Asia-Pacific Forum 2017.

    It used operator HKT’s C-V2X trial network, using the 2.6-GHz band for vehicle-to-infrastructure communications and 5.9-GHz for vehicle-to-vehicle communications.

    A vehicle fitted with C-V2X technology demonstrated scenarios including the transmission of vehicle-to-vehicle do not pass, vulnerable road user, blind spot or lane change warnings, alerts sent in cases where vehicles need to make emergency stops and intersection collision warnings.

    The Smart Mobility Consortium was founded in March by HKT, Huawei, Qualcomm and the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI).

    “Three months ago, we shook hands and signed the MoU to establish the Smart Mobility Consortium. Today, we are working hand-in-hand to bring the first demonstration of C-V2X technology for pushing safe mobility in Hong Kong,” HKT group managing director Alex Arena said yesterday.

    “The demonstration shows how C-V2X alerts drivers to dangers under different use cases on the road and emergency traffic conditions, which will make the roads safer and Hong Kong a better city to live in. Being the mobile network technology leader in Hong Kong, HKT will continue to push and realize C-V2X technology & applications, in support of the Government’s Smart City vision and strategy.”

    M1, Huawei complete 5G mmWave demo

    M1 and Huawei have completed a 5G demonstration over 73-GHz E-band spectrum, achieving Singapore’s highest 5G transmission speeds of 35Gbps.

    The demonstration at M1’s main operating center in Jurong has validated the performance of 5G using millimeter wave high frequency bands, the companies announced.

    M1 CTO Denis Seek said 5G will support the massive number of low-latency connections critical to driving the next wave of technological development in areas including virtual and augmented reality, the connected car and autonomous vehicles as well as IoT applications.

    “Singapore’s mobile networks are widely acknowledged as amongst the most advanced worldwide, and M1 is committed to staying at the forefront of 5G technology to ensure our consumers enjoy the best experience and latest smart applications,” he said.

    In Hong Kong, SmarTone and Ericsson recently conducted the city’s first 5G demonstration using millimeter wave spectrum.

    Smart, Nokia conduct Philippines’ first 5G demo

    The Philippines’ PLDT, through mobile subsidiary Smart, has completed the first showcase of 5G speeds in the nation.

    During the trial the companies achieved a peak speed of 2.5Gbps using 100 MHz of spectrum, as well as a latency of just 1ms.

    The demo was conducted at the Nokia Manila Technology Center in Quezon City, and demonstrated use cases for 5G including 3D 360-degree VR streaming and the Nokia AirFrame data center platform for distributed cloud architectures capable of supporting real-time IoT operation.

    “We are excited to work with Nokia in conducting cutting-edge research and development for 5G,” PLDT and Smart CEO Manuel Pangilinan said.

    “This is a key part of our efforts to transform the PLDT and Smart network into the country’s most future-ready data infrastructure delivering a wide range of gigabit digital solutions.”

    He said 5G will be critical to realizing Smart’s full vision for the IoT. The operator has a track record of investing in and helping drive the development of the IoT, including the founding the Philippines’ first Internet of Everything consortium in 2014.

    Nokia’s Bell Labs predicts that there will be up to 5 billion IoT devices connected through mobile networks by the year 2020.

    Singtel, Ericsson complete SEA’s first 5G demo

    Singtel and Ericsson have completed the first live demonstration of 5G prototype technology, achieving a peak throughput of 27.5Gbps.

    The demonstration used Ericsson’s 5G radio prototypes to showcase the capabilities offered by the new networking technology, which also included demonstrating a latency as low as 2ms.

    At the demonstration, Singtel and Ericsson also showcased the world’s first end-to-end low latency live video streaming over 5G.

    Ericsson and Singel signed an MoU last year to collaborate on testing technology candidates for the 5G standard. Last week, the companies completed a live trial of pre-standard License Assisted Access (LAA) technology over Singtel’s 4G network.

    Singtel group CTO Tay Soo Meng said the collaboration is aimed at ensuring the operator’s customers have access to the latest mobile technologies.

    “We strive to upgrade our networks with cutting-edge enhancements, constantly offering our customers all the possibilities that technology brings. Singapore is at the forefront of the most connected cities in the world and now we want to take it to the next level,” he said.

    “5G is very important to the Singtel Group as it will support advanced communication needs. To ensure the Group continues our technology leadership in the mobile communications domain, we are exploring, studying and trialling pre-5G technologies with Ericsson.”

    The operator is preparing for the anticipated standardization of 5G in 2020 by deploying key pre-5G technologies including carrier aggregation, 256QAM and NB-IoT.
