  • Apples focuses on high-end audio market

Apples focuses on high-end audio market

Apple is returning to its roots when it comes to music products and is starting to embrace the world of audiophiles who are prepared to pay more for premium, higher-quality speakers and music devices.

Take the release of the HomePod in February. Apple‘s new home speaker is designed to compete with Amazon’s Echo devices. A key part of Apple’s marketing for the device focuses on the audio quality.

“HomePod is a powerful speaker that sounds amazing and adapts to wherever it’s playing,” Apple says on its website. “It is the ultimate music authority, bringing together Apple Music and Siri to learn your taste in music.”

Apple already has its own line of headphones, and even has an entire separate brand for them: Beats. Apple bought Beats for $3 billion (£2.1 billion) in 2014, and got its hands on the company’s trendy headphones business, its fledgling music streaming service, and Beats founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre.

But the Beats brand never felt like a natural fit for Apple. The company built up its profile by making sure that celebrities and sports stars wore its distinctive, colourful headphones. Apple, however, prefers to be far more low-key in its endorsements and design choices. Design chief Jony Ive favours white, minimalist products, for example.

Apple now seems to be planning to start again on headphones and is reportedly working on something that seems much more Apple-y.

High-end audio products are nothing new for Apple. In fact, it brings the company back to the release of the iPod.

The iPod Classic was practically tailor-made for audiophiles with its 80GB or 160GB hard drive and support for lossless music. Wired said that it was “the natural choice for people who are serious enough about audio quality to include their listening equipment in their signature files.”

But over the years Apple has moved away from catering to audiophiles. It’s a small market, after all, and Apple does not want to risk releasing niche products. So newer iPhones made it incredibly difficult to play lossless music, and Apple eventually discontinued the iPod Classic. “Farewell Apple iPod classic, We Audiophiles Will Miss You,” PC Magazine wrote.

There have been glimmers of hope for audiophile Apple watchers over the years, though.

Ive likes to play loud music in the Apple design studio. Maybe that was a sign that an Apple stereo system was on the way. Apple founder Steve Jobs had been working on a new, lossless music format with musician Neil Young. Maybe Apple was about to get back into lossless audio in a big way (it wasn’t). U2 singer Bono said that he was working on a top secret music format with Apple. Perhaps that was the high-resolution audio fans had been waiting for.

The audiophiles revolted. “How do you justify an iDevice to an audiophile?” read one forum post. “With the lackluster audio properties inside the devices and the inability to make adjustments to the sound it is a hard sell to someone who cares about audio, for a company that claims to love music.”

Another forum post had the title “Apple Music… Seriously?” Audiophiles bemoaned the lack of proper lossless audio support. Sure, some people made the point that Apple’s music format is basically identical to standard lossless formats. But audiophiles never saw Apple as a serious player in that space.

Now, that all seems to be changing. The HomePod received positive reviews from Reddit’s audiophile community. Apple vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller even tweeted a link to a post from the subreddit reviewing the speaker.

The release of a line of premium Apple headphones would do even more to establish Apple’s audiophile credentials. Until recently, the closest thing you would find to an audiophile product in an Apple Store was a speaker made by a third-party company such as Devialet. But that is likely to change as Apple develops its own line of speakers and headphones.

During this soft launch period, a section of the store’s complete retail area will be open while the full sales floor undergoes an extensive two-phase remodel and renovation. Gold Phantom Opéra de Paris | Devialet limited edition in Asia Pacific

Following the announcement of their 10-year partnership, Devialet is releasing a limited supply of Gold Phantom Opéra de Paris | Devialet to its key flagships across Asia Pacific region.

The partnership and licence agreement will see the two organisations work together upon a shared vision of excellence and strong ties to France’s musical and historical heritage.

The three main focuses of the project will be a Devialet sound discovery area within the Palais Garnier, a co-branded product line, and an Opera “hors les murs” (outside the walls) project, offering a new way to listen to and experience opera.

Jean-Philippe Thiellay, Deputy General Director of the Paris Opera said; “The search for new forms of outreach and development is an integral part of our mission. Devialet is a magnificent partner for us, with a uniquely French take on innovation and excellence that is completely in line with the Opera’s own vision. The Paris Opera will celebrate its 350th anniversary in 2019, and is constantly seeking new ways to reinvent itself as an institution.”

Devialet can claim such a partnership as one of its kind and Quentin Sannié, cofounder and CEO of Devialet commented :  “Working alongside the Paris Opera, a symbol of excellence, and having a presence in the Palais Garnier, the visionary work of an innovator of his time, has been a dream for almost 10 years. We want to use this project to contribute to the influence of French creativity around the world.”

Retail in Asia joined the launch of the limited edition of 88 pieces available in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is one of three chosen destinations in the world to release the covetable collection’s edition otherwise only available within the sound discovery area of the Opera Garnier, Paris.

The launch at the Devialet private lounge in Lee Garden One in Causeway Bay presented the Gold Phantom Opéra de Paris | Devialet as if it was an artwork dominating the hall. Once unveiled, the guests were transported to the Opéra de Paris on the musical notes of the The Phantom of the Opera.

Drawing on the iconic gilded interiors of the Auditorium, each Gold Phantom Opéra de Paris | Devialet features the Paris Opera logo and gold leaf gills finished by Ateliers Gohard, according to meticulous and time-honored oil gilding methods.

Handed down across 3 generations of traditional and fine application, they have treated each of Phantom’s side panels with the same original mastery used to restore and illuminate the gold of the Palais Garnier itself.

The design, being finished by Ateliers Gohard makes the collaboration between Opéra de Paris and Devialet a 360 degree experience of the excellence of French art in its myriad of realizations.

Each gold leaf is applied by hand for a unique and irreplaceable patina. Once the leaf has been applied, it cannot be removed. Absolute perfection is required first time round.

  • Devialet is expanding in Asia

    Devialet is expanding in Asia

Nowadays, new technologies and innovations enable consumers to improve their lifestyle. In the domain of audio, it allows music to be more accessible, while delivering a better quality of sound. It is through this vision that Devialet operates in the industry.

Devialet is a French tech start up and innovator in breakthrough sound technology. The brand invented proprietary technologies to deliver the highest sound quality including ADH (Analog Digital Hybrid) Intelligence. This invention enables hybridization between the preciseness of analogue sound and the power of digital to produce a sound with the upmost clarity without any saturation or distortion. This innovation constitutes a major milestone in the history of the audio industry. Founded in 2007 by three French co-founders, Devialet quickly imposed itself in the audio market as a high-tech innovative brand. Indeed, its disruptive technology is combined with an iconic design to offer desirability and uniqueness.

Two lines are available on the market at the moment. The Expert Pro range, introduced in 2010, features the best performance amplifier systems for audiophiles regardless of the price and size. In parallel, the Phantom – a high performance wireless speaker featuring Devialet’s proprietary technology has been available since 2015. Phantom is the pinnacle of high-end audio devices, delivering a revolutionary acoustical experience that has zero distortion, saturation or background noise. The Phantom is available in three different specifications: Phantom (750W, 99dB), Silver Phantom (3000W, 105dB) and Gold Phantom (4500W, 108dB).

As Julien Bergère, General Manager of Devialet Asia Pacific tells us, it is hard to identify a specific profile of consumer. He justifies his opinion by stating that “music is universal” and customers need to “experience the power of Devialet sound for themselves”. To Julien, it’s “always interesting to welcome a customer whose intention is to purchase a Bluetooth audio system retailing at 300USD for example, who then ends up purchasing our Phantom which starts at just over 2,000USD”. In order to create such opportunities, Devialet is working on further developing its brand awareness and securing high visibility and high traffic premium retail locations. In this way, the brand can deliver an intense audio experience that potential customers will remember.

In addition to its strategic locations, Devialet also places great emphasis on its store design to enhance the customer’s experience. All of the boutiques have at least one sealed listening room where customers can enjoy sound demos from the Phantom range. This original retail concept allows the brand to share the Devialet difference with potential customers and in the case of the Harbour City store with two listening rooms – multiple clients can enjoy a private demo at the same time. According to Julien Bergère, this is the “key to discovering the power of Devialet sound”. This concept was first introduced in Hong Kong in 2016. An immersive room (a Devialet pop-up concept) was installed in Pacific Place for local customers to experience the Phantom.

Moreover, this pop-up triggered the beginning of Devialet’s retail expansion in Asia. The first flagship store opened in January 2017 in Hong Kong’s IFC mall, followed by the opening of a second store in Harbour City on June 22nd 2017. A Devialet immersive room will also open in Festival Walk in July. Elsewhere in Asia, a Devialet immersive room launched in Taipei on 1st June and the brand will open two stores in Singapore in July to accelerate its expansion in the region.

This consequent growth comes with the Devialet’s will to innovate and share their passion. Julien Bergère mentions the importance of partnerships to enhance the brand’s experience further. As he says, “we are looking for partnerships that speak to our hearts as musicians”. In March of this year, Devialet launched a partnership with the French leather-maker Berluti to create a limited edition leather Cocoon (the Phantom travel bag), which is available in Hong Kong with extremely limited quantities. In parallel, Devialet announced a 10-year partnership with the Paris Opera, which will start in September with a series of collaborations. This includes a Sound Discovery Area inside the Paris Opera, a co-branded product line and an Opera “hors le murs” outside the walls project, offering new way to listen to and experience opera through live-streaming. Again, this illustrates the constant desire to innovate and improve consumer’s lifestyles and elevate the listening experience.
