    OnTheList launches in Singapore

Hong Kong’s OnTheList flash-sale concept has launched in Singapore.

The first OnTheList Singapore sale will run from September 19 to 22 in Ngee Ann City Tower B.

It marks the first overseas foray by the independent, members-only flash-sale concept platform, founded in 2016 by French entrepreneurs, Delphine Lefay and Diego Dultzin Lacoste.

OnTheList contracts to brands to move excess inventories in short-term sales, with discounts as high as 90 per cent. By selling to a pre-registered, members-only audience, the sales do not undermine those at mainstream stores, or clutter them with racks of off-price merchandise.

Consumers enrol to attend sales online, with options of free access or a paid premium membership giving advance access to sales.  A separate website has been built for OnTheList Singapore.

“When I was working in Hong Kong’s retail industry, there was an absence of options for distributors and brands to clear old inventory occupying valuable warehouse space,” explains Delphine Lefay. “To fill this gap, we founded OnTheList as an independent third-party platform and it was the first of its kind in Asia.

“Through flash sales we hosted, we offered consumers access to premium products at attractive prices, and brands the opportunity to clear past-season items and connect with new customers,” she adds.

Dultzin Lacoste says this method of clearing stock also promotes sustainability and minimises environmental impact within the retail industry, as old inventory does not go to waste.

“OnTheList’s business model also gives brands the opportunity to reach out to a wider consumer database, engaging them through the flash sale platform as a first touch point.”

In just two years, the business has gone from a few pop-up sales to over 150 flash sales and partnerships with over 250 premium brands, including Armani, Clarins, Diane Von Furstenberg, Ferragamo, Kenzo, Roberto Cavalli, and Ted Baker Le Creuset and Havaianas. In Hong Kong, OnTheList now has a permanent venue for its flash sales, but has grown so big it still needs short-term venues, often running multiple sales concurrently.

OnTheList has now cleared more than 1 million items from its brand partners – and in one four-day sale last year it sold a pair of Havaianas every six seconds.

OnTheList Singapore will launch with monthly pop-up sales, announcing participating brands just 10 days prior to the sale.

“We are expanding into Singapore because its retail market has many similarities with Hong Kong’s,” says Lefay.

OnTheList Singapore also hopes to tap into the large tourism market, as tourism receipts in the city have reached record highs during the past two years.

“As visitor arrivals from China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam have increased tremendously, it is an opportune time for OnTheList to attract high spenders from the region and to use Singapore as a launchpad for future expansion in Asia and beyond.”

Diane von Furstenberg seeks new investor for DVF

Diane von Fürstenberg has decided to look for an investor willing to acquire a stake in her US label and support it through a new expansion phase.

“I’m not about to sell my business, but the time has come to give the company the senior management it deserves,” the 70-year-old designer has told Women’s Wear Daily (WWD). “I’ve decided we will probably sell a stake in the company.”

A spokesperson for the label says talks are at an initial phase, and no target date has been set.

In the past few years the label has reduced the number of items in its ready-to-wear collections by 40 per cent, and has also streamlined its retail and wholesale networks.

“Retail sales are going through a difficult phase for all brands right now,” says the company, founded in 1972. “In terms of physical stores, we have not renewed a number of leases and, effectively, we have deliberately rationalised our distribution.

“Meanwhile, our e-tail business is performing extremely well.”

In May last year, Jonathan Saunders joined Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) as its chief creative officer, overseeing all design and creative. The founder is still chairman.

Headquartered in New York City, DVF has a global distribution network in more than 55 countries, including Asia Pacific, with 1500 points of sale including 148 DVF owned and partnered stores.

  • Takashimaya Vietnam opens doors

    Takashimaya Vietnam opens doors

Three years after the Japanese luxury department store chain announced plans to enter Saigon, Takashimaya Vietnam opened its doors at the weekend.

As the anchor tenant of  downtown Ho Chi Minh City’s Saigon Center, Takashimaya takes up a whole five floors making it by far the nation’s largest department store – and likely its most expensive.

The first impression that the department store makes is its spacious interior. Concessions to brands have been arranged to leave unusually wide aisles – ensuring the store was comfortable even on its crowded grand opening day.

The first floor of Takashimaya houses the food maison, most of which is filled by Japanese F&B brands such as Minamoto Kitchoan, Gyumaru, Azabu Sabo, Yamazaki and Suizan. Some tea brands make their way into that space, including Vietnam’s own Phuc Long, Singapore’s TWG tea, and B Tea.

Targeting the high class consumers in Saigon and Vietnam, Takashimaya has chosen carefully the brands to appear in their stores, including luxury brands coming to Vietnam the first time, complemented by the high level of customer service Takashimaya offers elsewhere in the world.

The second floor is exclusively for ladies with international fashion names such as Banana Republic, Bebe, Bonia, Braun Buffel; footwear from Clarks, Geox, Cole Haan; bags from Carlo Rino, Cromia; and Furla with its first flagship in Vietnam after years being distributed by Ha Vang company.

The rest space is occupied by cosmetics brands, including Korean labels Skinfood, which marked the store’s opening with a special event ‘Makeup Style for Your Summer’.

“We offer free makeup and manicure for our customers for two days. Besides, when they buy our products, they will receive a gift set,” said Kieu Oanh, senior PR & marketing executive of Skinfood Vietnam.

For women, the excitement continues on the next level of Takashimaya: a heaven of luxury cosmetics, jewelleries and fragrances. Christian Dior is prominently located at the front, with rival Lancome opposite. Lancome also opened its own ‘Lancome Cafe’ – a style boutique, where women can take free makeup lessons and receive gifts for the best ‘artwork’.

Other brands include Bobbi Brown, Shiseido, Estee Lauder, Swarovski, and Mac.
