SM Group, Disney seal strategic deal

SM Group is to collaborate with The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia to bring Disney brands closer to Filipinos through mall, retail, entertainment and amusement opportunities.

The two companies say they aim to bring Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars brands to life through “unique Disney experiences at SM’s many leisure and entertainment properties”.

Fans can look forward to a host of innovative offerings including Disney branded events, promotions and other unique experiences themed around fan-favorite Disney brands and characters.

“We are thrilled to be associated with the iconic Walt Disney Company,” said Edgar Tejerero, president of SM Lifestyle Entertainment.

“Henry Sy Sr envisioned and purposed a second home for Filipinos across the nation where they can create memorable bonding activities with their families through amusement facilities, retail centers, and food establishments, all found in one mall. Sixty-five years later, and with 52 malls across the Philippines, it had just been high time that SM forged an official collaboration with the best family entertainment company in the world,” Tejerero said.

Rob Gilby, MD of The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia, said Disney makes millions of Filipinos laugh and smile with its stories and characters every day.

“We have worked with the various arms of SM group over the years and today we are delighted to announce our collaboration on a comprehensive plan to create magical moments and memories that will last a lifetime for fans across the Philippines.”

SM says it has synergised the efforts of all its subsidiaries – including SM Supermalls, SM Markets, The SM Store, Toy Kingdom, and its lifestyle and entertainment arm, SM Lifestyle Entertainment – to produce a complete and one-of-a-kind Disney experience for its patrons: from the moment they enter the mall to watch a movie, to the time they purchase their favourite snack and Disney merchandise. Patrons can also take their SM Cinema and Disney experience with them home, or wherever they go, through the newly launched Blink app.

As a precursor to an already successful association, Disney and SM have worked together to bring multiple experiential events to the Filipino families such as the recent Avengers Experience in SM North Edsa, where guests were treated to life-size characters, Avenger-themed games, and a ‘meet and greet’ with Captain America, Thor and Black Widow.

To officially jump start their partnership, SM and Disney will be launching a “Star Wars Galactic Christmas” to welcome the latest instalment of the movie, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The exhibit will include life-size figurines of characters from the movie, interactive games, and official merchandise from the SM Store and Toy Kingdom.

The Disney, Uniqlo relationship began in 2009, when the company launched its first collection of UTs (Uniqlo T-shirts) featuring iconic and treasured Disney characters, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. Through Magic For All, Uniqlo will extend its collaboration beyond the UT and sweat parka lines and introduce new LifeWear items beginning in fall 2015.

Products will range from Ultra Light Down, fleece, and flannel shirts to umbrellas, plush toys, and other offerings featuring Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse and then expand to include popular characters from Star Wars, Pixar Animation Studios’ Toy Story, Marvel’s Avengers and Disney’s Frozen.

Customers will be introduced to Magic For All at D23 Expo, The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, in Anaheim, California from August 14-16.

A concept store featuring the full product range will open in Shanghai at the end of September. Currently under construction, it will occupy the fifth floor of the five story Uniqlo Shanghai Global Flagship, the brand’s largest worldwide.

  • Mini ‘ocean worlds’ for China malls

Mini ‘ocean worlds’ for China malls

Hong Kong listed theme park operator Haichang Holdings has revealed a plan to open ‘mini ocean worlds’ in China malls.

In an interview with the South China Morning Post, CEO Wang Xuguang said the company has decided to embark on a new growth strategy rather than copying rival developers pursuing the “bigger is better” course.

“We had heated discussions when mulling over development, but we decided to follow a light-asset strategy rather than building more large parks like others are doing,” he told the newspaper.

With more and more theme parks opening outside major Chinese cities – the new Disney World under construction in Shanghai the most publicised example, Haichang is wary of over supplying the market. So rather than build massive parks to attract customers, it wants instead to take the parks to the people.

“We believe there’ll be projects running into trouble over the coming few years. We will keep a close eye on any acquisition opportunities in the market.”

Wang said his company also plans to offer its operational experience and know-how to other park operators or shopping centres who want to set up small aquariums.

“Today in China developers are building their parks bigger and bigger using renowned foreign design companies and purchasing quality equipment from around the world, but a successful amusement park is not just a matter of money,” he said.

Haichang Holdings currently runs seven marine-themed parks in eastern and southern Mainland China cities, along with another Disney-style attraction. It has two under construction: Dream World in Sanya, on Hainan Island, and Polar Ocean Park at Shanghai, some 30 minutes from the new Disney attraction.
