    Alibaba Group sales jumps high

Alibaba Group sales soared 41 per cent in the December quarter as its customer based neared 700 million. The Chinese company’s turnover for the three months reached US$17.057 billion and its net income attributable to shareholders $4.807 billion. “Our resilient operating and financial performance is a direct reflection of our persistent focus on better serving our growing base of nearly 700 million consumers across retail, digital entertainment and local consumer services,” said CEO Daniel Zhang. “Our growth is also driven by the power of Alibaba’s cloud and data technology that helps expedite the digital transformation of millions of enterprises.”

Alibaba group sales from core commerce increased 40 per cent to $14.958 billion, while the cloud-computing division posted 84 per cent growth, turning over $962 million. The digital media and entertainment division achieved 20 per cent growth to reach $944 million.

In a statement, Alibaba said its Taobao platform achieved “robust user growth and enhanced engagement”. Last December, its China retail marketplaces had 699 million mobile monthly average users, representing a quarterly net increase of 33 million. The annual active consumers on its China retail marketplaces was 636 million for the 12 months ended December 31, compared to 601 million for the 12 months ended September 30 last year, “reflecting successful user acquisition programs, such as referrals through the Alipay app”.

More than 70 per cent of the increase in annual active consumers was from third-and-lower tier cities.

    Tmall thrives

Alibaba said GMV on its Tmall business grew 29 per cent year on year in the December quarter, outpacing the industry.

“This robust growth was driven by strength in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), apparel and home furnishing categories,” the company said.

During the quarter, Tmall signed up new brands to the platform including Valentino, Ermenegildo Zegna, Stuart Weitzman and Sergio Rossi which opened flagship stores and joined the Tmall Luxury Pavilion.

Meanwhile, Alibaba’s proprietary grocery retail chain Freshippo (formerly Hema) continued to expand its footprint, “optimise its stores and introduce new initiatives that improve customer experience”. As of December 31, there were 109 self-operated Freshippo stores in China, primarily located in tier 1 and tier 2 cities, which continued to achieve “robust same-store sales growth” through the quarter.

    ‘Robust’ Lazada growth

Alibaba’s Southeast Asian e-commerce platform Lazada achieved what the company described as “robust growth” in GMV. The company upgraded Lazada’s technology, which resulted in boosting the number of active users and achieved greater user engagement on Lazada’s mobile app.

“We continue to invest resources to integrate Lazada’s business and technology operations into Alibaba with the aim of building a strong foundation for us to extend our offerings in Southeast Asia.”

  • Ermenegildo Zegna acquires Thom Browne

    Ermenegildo Zegna acquires Thom Browne

The Italian company Ermenegildo Zegna Group has acquired 85 percent of the business at a $500 million valuation. Browne is the sole other shareholder.

The American designer label, best known for its intellectual and imaginative take on silver-spoon tropes — most notably, its signature shrunken grey suits — is partnering with a strategic investor on a bold expansion plan that will likely broaden its customer base and reach.

Today, Thom Browne announced that Italian menswear stalwart Ermenegildo Zegna Group has acquired an 85 percent stake in the company, valuing the business at approximately $500 million. Browne, the label’s founder and chief creative officer, is the only other remaining shareholder.

The transaction marks a brisk, successful exit for private equity firm Sandbridge Capital, which has held a majority stake in the brand since 2016.

“Thom and I took great care in choosing a new partner who would continue to both honor and celebrate Thom’s uniquely visionary approach to marrying the highly conceptual with the beautifully commercial,” Ken Suslow, founding managing partner at Sandbridge, said in an email to BoF. “It was readily apparent from the very beginning that Gildo and the Zegna Group constituted this ideal partner in every important respect.”

Chief executive Rodrigo Bazan, who joined Thom Browne in 2016 from Alexander Wang, will continue in his role. According to a report, Thom Browne generated $100 million in sales in 2016 and was on track to reach $120 million to $125 million in 2017.

In July 2018, Bazan said the company is still growing, with 31 directly owned retail stores in New York, London, Milan, Tokyo, Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Singapore. (A store in Miami is set to open in October.) “If anything, we’re containing the growth,” Bazan said.

“My goal is to keep Thom Browne independent,” Ermenegildo Zegna, chief executive of the Zegna Group said. “It’s a good company, a good organisation, a good business and profitable. The company has to stay autonomous from Zegna with support and help from the group. It will be a gradual approach. If something is working, don’t change it, just support it.”

In addition to leveraging Zegna Group’s global reach to expand the Thom Browne retail footprint, the New York-based fashion house will also benefit from Zegna’s expertise in fabrics and manufacturing. While Browne has volleyed between manufacturing in the US and Italy, most of his clothing is now produced in Europe.

Browne said that he was “proud” of the new partnership. “I think the most important thing is that Zegna represents the best quality,” he said. “As conceptual as my collections may be, the quality is the most fashionable part of what I do across the board.”

In return, Thom Browne will provide a contemporary fashion play for the family-owned textiles giant, whose current portfolio includes its flagship luxury menswear brand, sister-line Z Zegna and womenswear label Agnona. Zegna described the Thom Browne brand as one that appeals to consumers with a “millennial mindset.”

“I never put an age to it,” added Browne. “I think it’s just because of the way I approach design. It’s the youthful sensibility and spirit.”

Zegna also cited Thom Browne’s “thriving” women’s business — which launched in 2011 and now makes up 35 percent of sales — and its resonance with younger generations as proof that the brand will offer long-term value for the group. The deal also marks Zegna’s first notable investment in an American brand in recent history. “Both Thom Browne and Zegna have not fully utilised the opportunity of the US market, which is growing very very well, second only to China,” he said. “We believe in the market, and we can do much better with both brands.”

In July, he announced a partnership with Spanish football club FC Barcelona as the team’s official off-field outfitter. Most recently, the company has been working on signaling that Thom Browne is about more than runway showpieces and suiting. “That’s one of the reasons we bought Thom Brown,” Zegna said. “He’s the master of fun casualisation.”

Relaxed, yet still stylised, pieces — from sweatpants to quilted jackets — now play a starring role in the line’s commercial collections. At the time of the Barcelona announcement, Bazan said that that the brand will “continue to expand the product pricing architecture to touch more consumers, while continuing to prioritise quality.”

For Browne, the deal marks natural progression. While it was adamant on maintaining a financial stake — “I founded the business and it was just really important to know that I still had a piece of it,” he said — the series of investors he has brought on over the years, from Japan’s Stripe International to Sandbridge and now Zegna, have helped to continue building the business in the way he wants to build it: led by creativity.

“The most important thing for me that there was a real personal connection to all of them. It’s the reason why they worked,” he said. “With Ken and Sandbridge, it worked because we had a really close friendship. It’s refreshing to know that you can grow a successful big business and still be a gentleman. Sitting down with Gildo, I saw in him a true gentleman.”

  • Ermenegildo Zegna invests in India’s Raghavendra Rathore

Ermenegildo Zegna invests in India’s Raghavendra Rathore

Italy’s Ermenegildo Zegna has purchased a minority stake in Raghavendra Rathore, as the Italian suit maker looks to expand the luxury men’s brand and mature India’s luxury fashion market.

In partnering with Reliance Brands for a collective stake, Zegna’s equity investment is set to elevate Raghavendra Rathore as a business and brand, putting it on an international playing field.

While information was not disclosed of the partnership, there is huge potential for the Indian label to grow its custom menswear and accessories, its ability to enhance customer engagement, as well as to get more sourcing and back-end support. That’s in addition to opening more stores.

“Like Reliance, we are strategic and not merely financial investors,” Ermenegildo Zegna, CEO, Gildo Zegna told the Press Trust of India.

“As regards the investment in Raghavendra Rathore, it is significant as it is a first for a global fashion house making a strategic investment in the business of an Indian designer. In some sense, it heralds the coming of age and maturing of India’s luxury fashion business.”

Rathore, the Indian menswear designer famous for his Jodhpur Bandhgalas, currently has seven standalone stores in India.

Ermenegildo Zegna, which has its own menswear brand, retails through three stores in India, all run by Reliance Brands.

Reliance Brands has a portfolio of over 40 international brands that span across the luxury, bridge-to-luxury, high-premium and upscale-street lifestyle segments. Brands include Gas, Diesel, Marks & Spencer and Steve Madden.

Last year, Reliance Brands acquired a 46.6% stake in Genesis Luxury Fashion, which operates brands such as Armani, Canali and Michael Kors.

Ermenegildo Zegna presents a multisensory experience

Ermenegildo Zegna, one of the most luxurious  Italian fashion houses for modern gentlemen, hosted an experiential cocktail event “Crafting Modernity” at the Hong Kong  Maritime Museum.

The event was an interactive, multisensory celebration where guests were guided through an intimate look into Ermenegildo Zegna’s creativity and artisanship, as well as their latest offerings – from the iconic PELLE TESSUTA Leather Collection, to the new arrivals of Zegna Toyz Collection which is also exclusively made in PELLE TESSUTATM.

The Zegna Toyz Collection, which was officially launched in Hong Kong at the event, features a wide range of home, travel and gaming products all made in PELLE TESSUTATM. The items are dedicated to the modern man for three different moments of his life: “Essential” is a collection of small leather goods for the gentleman’s business life and includes, among other things, a coin case, a business card case and a sunglasses case. “Toys” is a selection of leisure and entertainment travel games, which includes a domino set, a playing card set and a game cube. The “Technological” offer consists of a series of multimedia accessories, such as headphones and turntable, created in collaboration with Master & Dynamic, the premium audio brand known for its sophisticated sound tools.

At the event multisensory experience was created to stimulate the senses and guide each guest to connect with the brand on a deeper level and to truly experience and appreciate the innovation of the PELLE TESSUTA and the Zegna Toyz collection. Guests were invited to record a personalised audio message that can be immediately stored and also realized in a soundwave art on a plastic card, and when given to a loved one, can be played back by scanning the QR Code on the card face.

Another highlight of the evening was  the headphone and vinyl record player created through a special collaboration with Master & Dynamic, resulting in a beautiful set of  top-of-the-line music gear that stands out with its timeless design that is both elegant in its lines and sophisticated in its bearing.

To celebrate the collections, award winning bartender James Barker tailor –made 3 different signature cocktails inspired by Ermenegildo Zegna and its latest collections.
