South Korean beauty company Amorepacific Group is set to launch the Etude brand in Indonesia.

The firm has partnered with local lifestyle retailer PT Mitra Adiperkasa Tbk (MAP) to boost the growth of its business in the territory.

MAP plans to expand Amorepacific’s presence beyond Jakarta and across Bali, Surabaya and Bandung, giving more local customers better accessibility to the Etude brand, as well as Amorepacific’s other global brands such as Sulwhasoo, Laneige and Innisfree.

“We are looking forward to working with MAP, the largest retailer in Indonesia to unlock the enormous potential the country has to offer,” said Amorepacific Group president Dong-hyun Bae.

“With their expertise in retail, MAP and Amorepacific’s global brands are expected to create a great synergy and thereby provide the best quality service to the customers in Indonesia.”

Amorepacific Group, the largest global beauty company headquartered in Korea, has launched Etude House in India.

Etude House has become the third Amorepacific brand introduced to India after Innisfree and Laneige. The brand made its debut on the Indian market on April 30th exclusively through beauty retailer Nykaa.

Amorepacific plans to expand e-commerce channels to increase reach with millennial customers in the territory, communicating with Indian consumers through Instagram.

“The Indian beauty market is growing by nearly 10 per cent every year, and this fast growth is driven by millennial customers with increasing disposable incomes and growing interests in global beauty,” said Amorepacific’s group strategy unit head Lee Chang-kyoo. “We see tremendous potential in India to support our goal of strengthening the experience of Asian beauty in the region.”

“With the launch of Etude House in India, we seek to offer the best beauty experience to our Indian customers – with products that are backed by over 70 years of studies in natural ingredients and world-class innovative technology. This year, we plan to boost our brand operations through online channels.”

Nykaa chief business officer Nihir Parikh added: “Over the last two years, Nykaa brought Korean beauty to India, introducing customers to their unique innovations and ingredients. The category has been a great success with our customers, who are keen to experience such global trends.”

  • China ripe for AmorePacific

    China ripe for AmorePacific

AmorePacific, South Korea’s largest cosmetic company, has reaffirmed its commitment to China, seeing further room for growth in the rising middle-class consumers there, the firm said Thursday.

AmorePacific has shown stellar performance in China with a range of luxury and low-end brands, thanks to the rising popularity of Korean drama and pop. It logged 5.66 trillion won (US$4.93 billion) in sales last year, up 20.1 per cent year-on-year.

The Korean multinational owns the cosmetics and retail brands Etude House, Laneige, innisfree, and sulwhasoo, among others.

“By 2020, the middle class population is expected to reach 500 million, and its size and influence will greatly expand in the next decade,” AmorePacific CEO Suh Kyung-bae said during a monthly meeting with senior officials earlier this month.

While Beijing has applied non-tariff barriers, such as those on ingredients and the approval of foreign brands, Suh expects the focus of regulations will move to distribution to curb counterfeit items and the grey market.

“However, the tightened retail regulations will have a limited impact on companies that have already established distribution channels in the Chinese market,” Suh said.

While fledgling cosmetics producers have bloomed over the past years, Suh expects it will take time for them to match the level of its technology and brand power.

“We will have to keep an eye on the growth of emerging local companies, but brand power is not something they can get in a short period of time,” he said.
