  • More Chinese seniors embrace WeChat

    More Chinese seniors embrace WeChat

The ubiquitous WeChat is continuing to expand its reach across all age groups – especially among people aged 55 and above. According to the 2018 WeChat Data Report released at the WeChat Open Class Pro 2019 event in Guangzhou this week, seniors recorded the fastest growth of any age group last year. WeChat says more people are sharing more content on the platform: users are sending more messages, making more voice and video calls, and posting more frequently on their WeChat Moments timelines.

Figures for September show WeChat had 1.082 billion monthly active users and 45 billion messages were sent daily on the app, up 18 per cent on the previous year. The number of calls daily – 410 million – was double the previous year’s number. From 2015 to last year, the volume of text messages rose 110 per cent, voice messages rose 212 per cent, image volume by 255 per cent and videos by a massive 1900 per cent.

WeChat Pay is taking an increasing share of payments at retailers, with monthly transactions up 150 per cent in September, compared with the previous year. Transactions by consumers aged 55 and above in department stores rose by 320 per cent year on year.

More people are using WeChat for work and more businesses are using WeChat to connect with customers and staff, according to the report.

The company said WeChat Mini Programs, launched two years ago, has been widely adopted by users and businesses with more than 600 million people using Mini Programs at least once a week on services or products from more than 200 industry segments. The number of transactions (by volume) increased sixfold last year.

In a statement, WeChat said it would continue to create more advanced tools, open APIs and enhanced cloud services so developers can help businesses build Mini Programs more efficiently.

During the past year, WeChat has introduced features such as Scan-to-Buy enabling users to pay without queueing at cashiers and Smart Recommendations based on users’ past purchases to help merchants increase conversion and operational efficiency, grow their membership programs, reduce manpower costs and deliver more personalised services to customers.

The WeChat Open Class Pro event is for merchants and developers. The photos accompanying this story are from the event.

  • Homeplus hosts 1st beer sommelier competition

Homeplus hosts 1st beer sommelier competition

Twenty-seven people have been awarded the auspicious title of beer sommelier by discount chain Homeplus. The discount chain’s first Macmelie Contest – macmelie is a portmanteau of the Korean word maekju, or beer, and sommelier – on Saturday saw 200 contestants gather at a convention center in Gangnam District, southern Seoul, to take a comprehensive test for a chance to become Homeplus-certified beer sommeliers.

A total of 10,000 people had taken an online preliminary test to qualify to attend the Macmelie Contest.

The 27 contestants who passed the test on Saturday with over 70 points out of a 100 were awarded Macmelie ID cards. They were also given the opportunity to be the first to try out Homeplus’ newest beer imports and work together with the company to develop new beer products.

The test included a written paper, worth 60 points, and a more interactive round – inevitably including a beer tasting test – worth 40 points.

Some of the written questions tested contestants’ basic knowledge of beer, for example by asking for the German city that hosts Oktoberfest or the brew’s four core ingredients. Other questions were more difficult. One asked for the historic period when Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria adopted the German Beer Purity Law, while another asked for the number of indents that beer bottle caps have.

The interactive questions were also challenging. Contestants had to guess how many milliliters of beer a cup held and also identify beer types by taste.

Lee Ik-jin scored the highest out of all contestants with 84 points. “I didn’t expect to win first place, but I think my experience drinking a lot of beer in the past helped.”

Homeplus currently offers around 690 types of local and foreign beer. The company says it hopes to enrich Korea’s beer consumption culture through its Macmelie contest.

“We’ve been offering beer from around the world to meet rising demand that we are now even called the beer mecca,” said Kim Min-soo, a brand marketing manager at Homeplus.

  • Asia’s Newest Fashion Event CENTRESTAGE Draws to Successful Conclusion in Hong Kong

Asia’s Newest Fashion Event CENTRESTAGE Draws to Successful Conclusion in Hong Kong

CENTRESTAGE, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s (HKTDC) new fashion brand promotion and launch platform, ended Saturday (10 September) on a high note. The four-day (7-10 September) international fashion event welcomed some 200 fashion brands from 20 countries and regions showcasing their latest fashion collections. The trade show attracted close to 8,300 buyers from 71 countries and regions, with nearly 40 per cent of buyers coming from Asia other than Hong Kong.

    centrestage-2

“CENTRESTAGE is an ideal promotion and launch platform for international, especially Asian, fashion brands and designer labels,” said HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau. “We are pleased that the debut event has captured the attention of the Asian fashion industry, successfully attracting fashion brands and buyers keen on expanding their Asian business to come and promote, source and launch new collections and explore cooperation opportunities. And it provides a platform for local new designers to showcase creative designs to media and buyers in the region. CENTRESTAGE is an effective event for driving regional fashion exchange and development while solidifying Hong Kong’s position as a fashion capital.”

Nearly 60% cautiously optimistic about overall sales; nearly half engaged in e-tailing business

To better understand the industry players’ views on the outlook for the fashion industry and product trends, the HKTDC commissioned an independent market research agency to conduct on-site surveys during CENTRESTAGE, interviewing some 270 exhibitors and buyers. The survey found that most respondents are cautiously optimistic about overall sales in 2017. Nearly 60 per cent of respondents expect overall sales in the coming year to remain steady, while 27 per cent expect overall sales to increase.

Thirty-three per cent of respondents anticipate production costs or sourcing prices to rise, but 65 per cent of respondents said they would not increase the FOB price or retail price, indicating that the industry is generally reluctant to transfer the increased costs to customers or consumers.

In terms of markets, the respondents expect Hong Kong, Japan and Korea to have the best growth prospects among traditional markets in the coming two years, while 60 per cent of respondents consider the Chinese mainland to be most promising among emerging markets.

The survey also sought to understand the product trends of the fashion industry. 60 per cent of respondents consider women’s wear to have the best growth potential, followed by men’s wear and kids’ wear. Nearly half of respondents have engaged in e-tailing business, selling mainly women’s wear (69%), casual wear (41%) and fashion jewellery (12%).

A number of trend seminars were held during the event. Michael Leow, Asia/Pacific Sales & Marketing Head for Fashion Snoops, said “Nowstalgia” will be a key trend in the coming year. The trend blends nostalgic and contemporary elements while incorporating the convenience of modern technology. During another seminar, Erica Ng, WGSN’s Senior Editor, Retail Intelligence, Asia Pacific, said the millennial lifestyle is transforming traditional retail. Retailers will need to find synergies between mobile apps, online shopping, physical retail and social media to effectively capture market share among this generation.

    Fashion promotion and launch platform

The survey also found that nearly 90 per cent of fashion buyers consider Hong Kong trade shows a major channel to contact new suppliers. At the same time, 92 per cent of exhibitors use Hong Kong trade shows to find new buyers. These findings indicate that CENTRESTAGE, being a regional fashion promotion and launch platform, is an important channel to promote industry cooperation and generating business opportunities.

French women’s fashion brand Edward Achour Paris was exhibiting in Hong Kong for the first time. Edward Achour, the brand’s designer, said, “CENTRESTAGE offers a great opportunity for our brand to open new markets, and the results have been encouraging. We have met many buyers from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Indonesia and other countries. Four Chinese mainland buyers even placed orders on-site.”

    centrestage-3

Hong Kong’s anagram, a brand that specialises in upmarket women’s fashion collections, had come to CENTRESTAGE to develop the international market. Its Brand Director, Winnie So, said, “International buyers have shown keen interest in our brand. We have established connections with wholesalers from Malaysia, Singapore and the US and a distributor from Vietnam. A buyer from New York has already confirmed orders and expects more orders after the show. CENTRESTAGE’s opening to the public on the last day was also an opportunity to promote our brand to the consumers.”

ILOVECHOC is a street fashion brand from the Chinese mainland targeting mainly young customers. The brand has a sales network of more than 300 retail stores across the mainland. Gu Yu, the brand’s Vice President, said they were participating in CENTRESTAGE to expand their sales presence in the international market. “The show has drummed up extensive interest and we have met many buyers from Southeast Asia. A number of buyers from Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia even wanted to explore cooperation. Hong Kong is a major fashion hub in Asia and CENTRESTAGE can bring together industry players from around the world. This platform can certainly facilitate our business expansion.”

    Finding new brands

La Rinascente, a long-established high-end department store group in Italy, saw CENTRESTAGE as an ideal opportunity to explore business opportunities in Asia for the first time. “CENTRESTAGE is a platform to find new brands and understand the fashion industry in Asian markets,” said Andrea Bonecoo, Buying Manager, la Rinascente SpA. “The business matching service introduced Hong Kong’s I.T Group to me. We held useful talks to exchange ideas and establish initial contact. We will communicate further to study future business cooperation. This show is the start of our effort to get to know more about Asia.”

Indonesian fashion boutique, Lucy House, joined CENTRESTAGE to source more new brands for its customers, according to Lucy Kurniawan who operates the company. “CENTRESTAGE offers a good platform to meet designers and this visit has generated good business opportunities,” she said. “I am now negotiating with a Hong Kong designer for the evening wear collection. An initial order would involve about 100 pieces in different styles. CENTRESTAGE has brought together some appealing designer brands. I will definitely visit the show again next year.”

Fida Alkaud, a buyer from Harvey Nichols Riyadh, Saudi Arabia came to CENTRESTAGE to look for contemporary evening wear. She said, “I am so happy to have found new brands which suit the tastes of our customers. These brands include Marquess & Homa, Guy Laroche Furs, Shelina and Camelia. I really appreciate HKTDC’s business matching service because it saves me a lot of time finding the right brands. The fashion shows are also very fascinating and I have found b.yu Designs at fashion show.”

Meili Inc. is one of the mainland’s largest fashion e-tailing brands. Margaret Yao, Business Cooperation Director, said she visited CENTRESTAGE to find new brands and explore cooperation opportunities. “The business matching meetings arranged by the organiser generated positive results. I found a Hong Kong designer and a US brand offering some suitable products to sell on our website. I have also identified four fashion brands from Thailand and will be in further discussions with them.”

Lotte is Korea’s biggest department store operator running 40 stores across the country. Hyeon Ji Sun, Lotte’s buyer, said, “I am visiting CENTRESTAGE to find new brands, especially sportswear and lifestyle wear brands. People in Korea love sports and outdoor activities, so demand for related fashion items is very strong. So far, I’ve identified two brands from Hong Kong. CENTRESTAGE is an interesting show where I can see a variation of trendy designs from many countries. I will come again to find more new brands.”

Indonesia is hosting the fourth Asian SME (small medium enterprise) Conference 2016, from Sept. 13 to 17 in Kota Kasablanka shopping mall in South Jakarta.

Cooperatives and SMEs Minister Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Puspayoga said the conference should facilitate SME players in strengthening their competence to face the global competition.

“I hope SME players get optimally empowered,” the minister said in a statement as quoted by tempo.co on Tuesday.

He said he expected Indonesian SMEs to thrive in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). “Good products, good services are not enough to survive the AEC,” he said. Thus, the conference was expected to give SMEs solutions to thrive in the AEC.

The conference is targeting 700 participants from 15 countries.

Puspayoga said Asia had become the center of economic growth and the biggest market in the world. Asia is ready to compete with other continents, he said.

The event is presented by Asian Council for Small Business (ACSB) and endorsed by the ministry and the International Council for Small Business (ICSB). The event will have seminars with speakers from Malaysia, the US, Taiwan, among others and visits to cosmetics company Martha Tilaar Group and to Bandung in West Java.

Erik-Juul-Mortensen-China's-Century-lead The TFWA China’s Century Conference will take place from 7-9th March 2017 in Guangzhou, at the port city’s Four Seasons Hotel. The official host of the event will be Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Co.

Erik Juul-Mortensen, president TFWA said: “TFWA China’s Century Conference is an essential diary date for anyone interested in the considerable commercial opportunities the Chinese market presents, as well as all those who want to gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese traveller both at home and outside China.”

The city of Guangzhou – northwest of Hong Kong on the Pearl River – is the third largest city in China and is said to have played ‘a pivotal role in the country’s economic development.’

    CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT

Its Central Business District, where the event will be located, underwent a major renovation in preparation for the Asian Games of 2010. The city now boasts a rapidly developing international airport, which is home to China Southern Airlines, and connects Guangzhou to the rest of China, Europe, Asia Pacific and beyond.

A spokesperson from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Co said: “Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Co is delighted to be the Official Host for next year’s TFWA China’s Century Conference.

“As the premier event for the duty free and travel retail industry in China, the conference brings together all the major companies involved in the market, and we believe Guangzhou is the perfect venue for such a gathering.

“Our city is one of the historic centres of trade in China and is attracting increasing numbers of business and leisure travellers, partly thanks to the efforts we are making to develop Guangzhou Baiyun as an international hub airport. We are confident this conference will be a big success and we look forward to welcoming delegates to our airport and to this vibrant city.”

SHANGHAI CONFERENCE DRAWS ALMOST 400 DELEGATES

The Four Seasons is located in the centre of Guangzhou’s Central Business District, close to the famous landmark Canton Tower. Occupying the top third of the 103-storey Guangzhou International Finance Center, which is one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers, it can truly claim to offer visitors ‘a room with a view’.

The first TFWA China’s Century Conference took place in 2013 in Beijing. The second conference, which was held in Shanghai in 2015, welcomed 388 delegates including senior executives from numerous airlines, airports and duty free and travel retail operators.

Over the two days, 120 meetings took place between the industry’s airports, concessionaires and brands. TFWA China’s Century Conferences have featured speakers from leading airports, airlines and retailers, as well as high profile researchers, academics, authors, editors and specialist consultancies.

TFWA’s unique ONE2ONE meeting service has played a key role in the event’s continuing success, while an exciting social programme with a range of glittering events held in the most impressive venues ensures that there is plenty of opportunity for more informal networking.

Edrington brands shine at DFS Masters event

Edrington Asia Travel Retail has sold more than $1.7m-worth of fine and rare bottlings of The Macallan and Highland Park Scotch malt whiskies at DFS Group’s Masters of Wine & Spirits’ (MOWS) events, since its launch in 2011.

Edrington has also welcomed the latest new ‘revamped format’ of the event in Singapore, which Ryan Hill, Managing Director says has ‘opened up this unique experience to an even broader set of consumers’.

This latest edition of the prestigious annual event was held over four floors of the DFS’ T Galleria Singapore on Scott’s Road in downtown Singapore, featuring a collection of rare wines, spirits and Champagne.

What was previously an invitation-only event for top-tier VIPs was opened up to all DFS’ customers this year, featuring tastings from leading brands across a four-week period where Edrington showcased its travel retail exclusive range of The Macallan and Highland Park whiskies, with the recently released Macallan Rare Cask Black taking centre-stage.

Opening up this year’s MOWS event was a positive move, according to Edrington. Very rare ‘vintages’ were also on show with The Macallan.

    EXCLUSIVE RARE TASTINGS

The company said: “Taking over the LOYAL T lounge for two nights, Edrington also hosted a series of exclusive invite-only tastings with members of DFS’ LOYAL T program and VIPs. The highlight of these educational sessions was an exclusive tasting of the Macallan Fine & Rare 1946 – one of the whiskies comprising the Five Decades Collection.

“The tasting was led by Darryl Haldane, The Macallan’s Head of Education, who told the unique story of the 1946 – one of very few peated Macallans ever produced due to a post-war coal shortage. Guests were also able to taste The Macallan No.6 – part of the 1824 Series and another product of The Macallan’s longstanding partnership with Lalique.”

The second night of the event saw featured The Macallan Fine & Rare 1949 and Highland Park Ragnvald and was co-hosted by Darryl Haldane and Martin Markvardsen, the Highland Park Brand Ambassador.

Interestingly, the company said this was the first time a Highland Park Brand Ambassador has hosted a private tasting with VIPs from DFS, with feedback from guests highlighting a ‘significant new found interest in the brand’.

Edrington’s Ryan Hill commented: “What has set this year’s event apart is the new, revamped format which has opened up this unique experience to an even broader set of consumers, providing an excellent opportunity to educate the next generation of connoisseurs.

    DFS ‘THRILLED’ WITH ‘INCREDIBLE PROGRAMME’

“Alongside this, the private setting of the LOYAL T bar gave us an opportunity to conduct intimate group-tastings of some particularly rare expressions of The Macallan with a carefully selected group of DFS’ most loyal customers.”

Adding her comments, DFS Group’s Brooke Supernaw, Senior Vice President Spirits, Wines and Tobacco said: “We’re thrilled that The Macallan has joined us for the fifth year at Masters of Wines and Spirits held at our own T Galleria by DFS store for the first time. Daryl and his team created an incredible programme, surprising and delighting our customers with their fantastic product offering and an unforgettable tasting experience.”

Created exclusively for DFS, The Macallan 5 Decades Collection, features five Fine & Rare vintages from 1946, 1950, 1975, 1989 and 1995, each drawn from a single unique cask representing a different decade, to commemorate SG50 [Singapore’s independence jubilee-Ed], alongside this year’s DFS Masters of Wines and Spirits.

The company added: “Exceptionally rare are the Fine & Rare 1946 and 1950, which are a couple of the oldest expressions that have ever been released to the public in the history of The Macallan. A truly iconic showpiece of liquid history, the 5 Decades Collection is presented in a specially designed bespoke cabinet.”
