  • Netflix is adding a cheaper plan for those who want a lower price and will watch ads

Netflix is adding a cheaper plan for those who want a lower price and will watch ads

During an interview at the Cannes Lion advertising festival, the CEO of Netflix Ted Sarandos gave the most direct indication that it will launch a cheaper, ad-supported subscription tier to the embattled streaming service.

In essence, Mr. Sarandos said that the company will be “adding an ad tier; we’re not adding ads to Netflix as you know it today.” After the pandemic boost wore out, Netflix hit the skids in terms of subscriber count as people spent less time watching TV shows and movies.

At the same time, new streaming services from juggernauts like HBO, Disney, or Apple, grew to rival Netflix, all the while it kept spending borrowed billions on content creation. Well, that crazy content spending was curtailed, a lot of shows were cancelled, and now Netflix will try and boost subscriber numbers by going downmarket.

Currently, the Netflix plans start from the Basic one at $9.99 per month with SD (up to 480p) picture quality, followed by the Standard $15.49 a month plan that offers 1080p definition, and go up to the Premium Netflix tier at $19.99 per month which includes 4K UHD quality streaming on up to four devices.

Besides cracking down on password sharing, Netflix will likely introduce the new ad-supported subscription tier at something close to the Apple TV+ $4.99 subscription price and will try to recuperate the difference with ad revenue. Or, as Ted Sarandos eloquently puts it:

  • Food, beverage businesses remain open through Tet

Food, beverage businesses remain open through Tet

Food and beverage establishments are working through Tet or abbreviating their holidays to make up for a year of poor business due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Crab restaurant chain Vua Cua is delivering through the holidays, and some of its outlets closed for two days out of the nine.

“I believe that many people will stay in HCMC during the holiday as they refrain from traveling,” CEO Doan Thi Anh said, adding that last year sales during the holidays were up 300 percent from normal days.

Tet, the Lunar New Year, is by far Vietnam’s most important festival, and most restaurants and other business establishments close for at least a week.

But this year many are either not closing or are opening early to cash in on an opportunity to earn some money after a desperate year.

Japanese chain Mirico reopened three of its six outlets in HCMC on Wednesday.

“We hope the number of customers during Tet this year (starting January 29) will reach the same as last year so that we can make up for months of closure,” manager Luu Hoang Huy said.

Two restaurants in the Quan Bui chain in Thu Duc City are also open for seven days of the nine-day holidays.

“I think many foreigners won’t return to their country this year and we anticipate a lot of customers during the holidays,” a media representative of the chain said.

For the first time since its establishment in 2018 Lagom Café in District 3 will remain open during most of the Tet holidays.

The decision was based her workers’ request, owner Do Thi Ly Na explained. They preferred to work saying the months off due to social distancing in the city were enough for them, she added.

In December revenues from food and accommodation rose by nearly 58 percent from November.

“Most well-known downtown restaurants have been operating at full capacity and even had to turn away some customers,” Le Nguyen Minh Man, owner of Hong Kong Town restaurant in District 1, said.

Business seems set to be “vibrant” in the first quarter, he said.

However, his restaurant would close through the holiday since his workers had been stuck in HCMC for a year and wanted to return home, he said.

Buying materials is challenging since suppliers are closed, and restaurants need to prepare ahead, he said.

Paying workers triple or even five times their normal salary is key to ensuring good service during Tet, he added.

  • Philippine Shopping Festival delayed due to coronavirus outbreak

Philippine Shopping Festival delayed due to coronavirus outbreak

The first Philippine Shopping Festival, a nationwide sale promotion aimed at getting people into malls, has been postponed due to the rise of coronavirus disease worldwide.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) announced the postponement of the month-long event just one day before it was supposed to start on Sunday, saying it prioritized the safety of the public more than a visitor or tourist arrivals and revenue.

“The malls are still free to continue (their) day-to-day operations. The DOT also recommends that malls follow the precautionary measures set by the Department of Health, such as checking the temperatures of mall-goers before allowing them to enter and the provision of more hand sanitizers in their premises,” said Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.

The Philippine Shopping Festival was intended to be the country’s answer to Singapore’s Great Sale and Hong Kong’s Summer Sale.

DOT targeted attracting foreign and local tourists where they could expect 15 to 70 percent discounts on Philippine-made products including food and dining, jewelry and fashion, crafts, furniture, and decor as well as beauty and wellness.

Shopping is the most common tourist activity in the country at 38 percent based on the department’s Visitor Sample Survey in 2018.

Puyat advised the public to maintain proper hygiene and follow the guidelines set by the Department of Health to contain the spread of the virus.

The department has not yet decided on a new date for the Philippine Shopping Festival.

The shopping festival is supported by the Philippine Retailers Association, Philippine Franchise Association, Philippine Owners Association Inc, Hotel Sales and Marketing Association and others.

  • Korea Sale Festa kicked off last week

Korea Sale Festa kicked off last week

The Korea Sale Festa beginning Sept. 28 will fail to fulfill its aim of boosting consumption and helping small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as a growing number of retailers and consumers have turned away from the government-initiated discount event.

Since 2016, the government has hosted the Korean version of Black Friday to stimulate domestic consumption.

However, consumers have pointed out low discount rates and the poor quality of products sold during the event.

Retailers have also complained about the ineffectiveness of the event. “Department stores and discount chains regularly hold discount events, so their sales do not grow significantly during the Korea Sale Festa,” a retail industry official said.

Amid the growing criticism, the government even cut the budget for the event and its duration.

According to Rep. Yoon Han-hong of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will spend 3.45 billion won (US$3 million) on the Korea Sale Festa this year, down from 5.1 billion won last year.

In particular, the budget for traditional markets and SMEs decreased to 1.3 billion won from 2.77 billion won, while that for the promotion of the event is 2.15 billion won, down from 2.32 billion won.

Most of the 2.15 billion won has been used to cast SHINee’s Choi Min-ho as spokes-model for the Korea Sale Festa, and entertainers who will perform on the eve of the event. They include Red Velvet, EXO, NCT 127 and several other singers and comedians.

The length of the Korea Sale Festa has also been shortened to 10 days this year from 34 days last year.

Given that the event will be held after the peak shopping season of the Chuseok holidays, SMEs and vendors at traditional markets will face difficulties in boosting sales.

Against this backdrop, the number of companies participating decreased to 231 this year from 446 last year, as a growing number of retailers, hotels and restaurants declined to offer discounts.

“Despite the recent slump in domestic consumption, the trade ministry does not pay any attention to the Korea Sale Festa, as it focuses only on the shutting down of nuclear power plants,” Yoon said. “The government should come up with measures to boost consumption and support SMEs.”

The ministry decided to spend 2 billion won on the Korea Sale Festa next year, down 1.45 billion won from this year. Some observers expect the Moon Jae-in administration will move to abolish the event initiated by the previous Park Geun-hye administration.

  • What’s the new luxury?

    What’s the new luxury?

Luxury brands are increasingly leveraging music festivals to turn young and affluent attendees into customers, with some going as far as to run their own events and concerts.

Luxury brands would have once distanced themselves as far as possible from the mud and grime of a music festival. Today, however, they cannot get enough of the summer festival season with some even running their own concerts and events. What has caused this change in tune? And how can luxury brands best position themselves alongside music and festivals?

    Why Festivals Matter
Luxury consumers can be found in abundance at racecourses, regattas and other seasonal sporting events. Every year brands compete for sponsorship rights in the hope that some of their attendees will turn into customers.

Younger generations spend their time differently, however. While some of their forebears would not be seen dead at a music festival, a growing number of affluent millennials and Gen Z attend several festivals and concerts every year.

Most of the 14 million people in the UK (OnePoll) and 32 million in the US (Billboard) who have attended a festival in the past two years fall into these age brackets and luxury brands can no longer ignore them: Bain & Co predicts that by 2025 millennials will count for 40 percent of the global luxury market and Gen Z five percent; figures that will only build beyond 2020.

    Festival Fashion and Instagram Installations
Coachella traditionally kicks off the annual festival season and, in the build-up to April’s big event, luxury fashion houses ready seasonal festival fashion lines. Their target audience is less about the quarter of a million attendees at Coachella than the quarter of a billion reached through social media.

Through social media, the music festival becomes a little more than a backdrop to the involuntary catwalk that is beamed across the world to millions. Influencers and celebrities are clad in the latest lines for the occasion and countless others coaxed into branded installations designed for maximum Instagram-ability.

This year saw Swarovski send Chiara Ferragni to Coachella in a new jewellery line, Gigi Hadid announced a new Moschino collaboration with H&M and Revolve styled over 450 influencers for the festival.

    Music Matters
For most festival goers, however, music is more important than fashion. Unexpected hits between live music and luxury include Burberry Acoustic, a series of performances and recordings of young British artists pioneered by former CEO Christopher Bailey. As well as accompanying catwalks, Burberry Acoustic acts as another social media channel, attracting nearly 3 million views on YouTube.

Luxury department stores have also used music to get more young consumers through their doors, picking up on research that millennials prefer experiences over goods. Macy’s hosts ‘mini-concerts’ in New York, Selfridges has ‘Music Matters’ in London and Galeries Lafayette hosts ‘Music Machines’ in Paris. These live performances are often run in-line with other festival-esque experiences such as yoga classes, cookery courses and other pop-ups.

    Beyond the Music
One major change to festivals over the past decade has been a focus on other attractions to appeal to a wider audience. Whereas food and drink were merely prerequisites to performances, their roles are now often reversed.

This provides another avenue for luxury brands to gain exposure at festivals. Mulberry have hosted picnics at Wilderness Festival in the UK, an event that spends and promotes as much on its food as music. The same event hosts a Veuve Clicquot bar while other champagne houses are touring the country this year: Laurent Perrier is at Cornwall’s Great Estate Festival and Bollinger at Hay Festival.

    Branded Festivals
Few luxury brands have managed to marry the commune-spirit with the commercial by running their own festival. Krug Champagne pioneered the luxury festival with their 2016 ‘Krug Island’ and 2017 ‘Into the Wild’ one-day festivals in the English countryside which paired little known artists with big name chefs and, of course, Krug Champagne. With no plans for a 2018 event, however, Krug seems to have abandoned the concept.

It is not only luxury brands who have struggled to get their own festivals off the ground. Drinks brand Innocent have dropped their ‘Un-plugged’ festival series, Apple their Apple Music Festival and Virgin their V Festival among countless others. Organisers have cited low ticket sales and high start-up costs among the reasons for ceasing these events.

    Getting the Balance Right
The dichotomy of a festival organiser is to balance commercial forces against the bohemian utopia that runs deep in every festival. When one outweighs the other – as it often does at a branded festival – it puts people off.

But the same forces apply to existing festivals. Attendees of Coachella recently felt it had become overly commercial and started the #Nochella movement boycotting the event. Though tickets prices and the personal views of its billionaire backer were blamed, major retail outlets on the festival grounds did it for some.

These successes and failures show the careful balance that luxury brands need to strike when it comes to music and festivals. Like traditional sponsorship, however, the best results will come when a brand is paired with an event of similar values.

  • About 20,000 people get their caffeine fix at the Singapore Coffee Festival

About 20,000 people get their caffeine fix at the Singapore Coffee Festival

About 20,000 coffee fiends got their fix and more at the second edition of the Singapore Coffee Festival, which ended yesterday.

The four-day event featured more than 90 exhibitors including coffee purveyors, equipment distributors and cafes, as well as workshops, talks and live entertainment at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre.

Exhibitors and visitors who attended last year’s festival praised this year’s edition for its more spacious layout with 11,500 sqm spread over two floors, and greater variety of products on offer. Last year’s event was held at the F1 Pit Building.

Many vendors reported brisk business at the weekend, with festival favourites such as The Coffee Academics’ Coffee In A Cone, cream muffins by bun-maker Hattendo and coffee-roasted pork chop buns by patisserie-restaurant chain Antoinette drawing long queues.

Hattendo was left with just 100 cream muffins after yesterday’s brunch session, and had made about $3,000 in sales a day, said Hattendo Singapore chief executive Daisuke Ishioka.

“We prepared more than 1,000 every day, and every day it has sold out. We are selling more than we expected to,” he said.

Splitting each day into two sessions – brunch and sundown – helped with crowd control and gave vendors time to replenish stocks.

Antoinette’s pork chop buns, created specially for the festival, proved so popular that they will be added as a weekend menu item at its restaurants soon, said its sales and marketing manager, Ms Wong.

A repeat participant at the coffee festival, Antoinette has seen a doubling in sales this year, with up to 2,000 buns sold over the four days.

A Barter Market, live music and fireworks displays at Sunrise Wharf on Friday and Saturday were among other highlights of the festival, which also hosted the 2017 Singapore AeroPress Championship by Common Man Coffee Roasters on Friday.

  • Festival tourism market now being tapped

Festival tourism market now being tapped

Festivals take place throughout the year in different localities, but they are not organized in a professional way to achieve international stature. Meanwhile, tourism sites do not pay appropriate attention to festival tourism, though they can see the number of tourists increases in festival seasons.

Da Nang, with one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet, is a rendezvous for travelers thanks to the Da Nang International Firework Competition (DIFC).

However, as Huynh Van Hung, director of the Da Nang City Culture & Sports Department, said, since DIFC is a competition, letting off fireworks is the only activity of the event, while there was no extra activity on the occasion.

DIFC only lasted two days and is organized once every two years. According to Ngo Quang Vinh, director of the Da Nang Tourism Department, a survey in 2015 found that after a firework competition, the Han Market’s management board reported a twofold increase in revenue.

Da Nang has changed its approach. Having realized the great potential of festival tourism, the city’s authorities decided to turn DIFC into DIFF (Da Nang International Firework Festival) this year, which lasts from April 30 to June 24.

As such, Vietnam, for the first time has a festival lasting throughout the summer.

This is the biggest firework festival in SE Asia with five places for firework performances and a series of associated events, which all have made Da Nang busy throughout the summer.

Da Nang hopes it would become an attractive destination point for about 2 million travelers in summer thanks to the ‘firework city’ brand.

Among tourism complexes, Sun World Ba Na Hills can best exploit the potential of festivals to attract travelers. Visitors to the leading resort in Vietnam in any season can enjoy the festive atmosphere.

In spring, Ba Na is brilliant with the colors of hundreds of flowers in Spring Flower Festival. In summer, the Wine Festival and beer- B’Festival are held. In autumn and winter, visitors will be able to enjoy the Halloween Festival and Christmas season.

In 2016, the resort received 2 million visitors.

  • Indonesia to attend International Yoga Festival in India

Indonesia to attend International Yoga Festival in India

Through its Wonderful Indonesia brand, Indonesia will promote its vast tourism potential at the annual International Yoga Festival, due to be held in the Indian city of Rishikesh on March 1-7, 2017.

To this end, the Indonesian Tourism Ministrys Deputy for International Marketing I Gde Pitana will be sent to head a delegation attending the event, the ministry noted in a press statement here on Tuesday.

Pitana said promoting the archipelagos tourism sector in this “City of the Divine” of India is a strategic move, as Indonesia also has several interesting destinations for practicing the art of yoga, and India is a potential market, which has yet to be tapped optimally.

At present, with its growing number of outbound tourists, India has become an important contributor of foreign visitors to Indonesia, he pointed out.

Several factors that may have attracted them to visit Indonesia are related to the two nations cultural similarities and the archipelagos diverse tourist destinations. The increasing trend of Indian travelers visiting the archipelago is also driven by Garuda Indonesias Mumbai-Jakarta flight.

With its diverse tourist destinations, Indonesia has plenty to offer to Indian travelers. Hence, it is necessary to implement various promotional strategies to attract more outbound tourists from the country, Pitana stated.

“One of our efforts is promoting the Wonderful Indonesia brand in India,” he revealed.

For the International Yoga Festival, Indonesia is sending a delegation, setting up a pavilion, as well as displaying and distributing the Wonderful Indonesia promotional materials, Pitana remarked.

The Tourism Ministry is offering support to singer Ayu Laksmi from Balis Svara Semesta (Sound of the Universe) to perform at the worlds largest yoga festival in which yoga lovers from 110 countries are expected to participate.

Laksmi and Semesta will perform at the opening and closing sessions of this annual event. During the festival, Indra Udayana, an artist and envoy of peace, and yoga instructor Anjasmara will also join the performers.

“This event is expected to help boost the image of Indonesias tourism industry to offer greater exposure in India. This is indeed a good opportunity to attract more outbound tourists from India and other countries,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the Tourism Ministrys Deputy Assistant of the Asia Pacific Market Development Vinsensius Jemadu stated that an awareness campaign package of the Wonderful Indonesia brand will be prepared for Indias electronic media.

“We shall also dispatch a Wonderful Indonesia team and prepare attractive souvenirs for the visitors at the Indonesia Pavilion,” he noted.

Bali will be highlighted at the event, as it is the main destination offered to Indians who have known the resort island as a popular place for yoga and spas.

Promoting the Wonderful Indonesia brand in India is expected to strengthen the positive image of the archipelagos tourism sector and to attract more Indian travelers to visit Indonesia, Jemadu remarked.

The Indonesian Tourism Ministry has noted that the biggest contributors of foreign tourists to Indonesia in 2015 were Singapore, with 1,571,982 visitors; Malaysia, with 1,247,270; China, with 1,141,330; Australia, with 1,051,141; Japan, with 528,465; South Korea, with 359,468; India, with 293,415; the UK, with 280,198; the US, with 263,429; and Taiwan, with 211,528.

Referring to the countries of origin and number of foreign tourist arrivals during the period between January and October 2016, the five main contributors were Singapore, with 1,177,695 visitors; China, with 1,221,422; Australia, with 1,011,077; Malaysia, with 989,739; and Japan, with 434,352.

As one of the largest economies of the G-20, India is regarded as a huge potential source of foreign tourists.

The Ministry of Tourism is targeting 15 million international tourist arrivals in 2017.

  • Minister hopes festival will promote Indonesian pearl to the world

Minister hopes festival will promote Indonesian pearl to the world

Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti hopes that the Indonesian Pearl Festival (IPF) 2016 will introduce Indonesias original pearls to the world.

“I hope the Indonesian South Sea Pearl (ISSP) would be introduced to pearl stakeholders and enthusiasts. The exhibition which has been held regularly would open access to the people,” the minister said when opening the IPS in Jakarta Wednesday.

The exposition displays the Indonesian sea kept pearls to the public she said.

It was the duty of everyone to introduce the Indonesian pearl to pearl stakeholders and enthusiasts, the minister said.

If the ISSP is recognized as a new commodity which has a high value, it would benefit Indonesia, as it would serve as a new source of economy to Indonesia.

The Indonesian pearl has good potential for the world market and therefore, noted designers are called on to present the latest pearl designs, she stated.

“Many people will come to know and love the pearl when they see the creative and up to date designs,” the minister added.

If the Indonesian pearl potential is cultivated properly it would boost the Indonesian economy, Minister Susi reminded earlier.

Pearls have become the target of illegal export practices, she said, and added that in 2014 the pearl exports to Hong Kong were worth US$49.8 million.

The figure is very different from the Indonesian pearl export data.

In 2015, Hong Kong imported pearls from Indonesia worth $34.2 million. But Indonesias pearl export data to Hong Kong showed that it was worth only about $1 million.
