    Samsung will develop payment cards with fingerprint scanners with Mastercard

    Samsung and Mastercard have partnered up to develop a fingerprint-authenticated payment card. Yes, we’re talking about an actual, physical card with a built-in fingerprint scanner. This innovation will increase the security of contactless payments and give users another layer of safety – while looking pretty darn cool.

    The card will work with every in-store (POS) terminal that supports Mastercard. When buying, the user will use their fingerprint rather than their PIN to secure the payment that they make. Especially in a pandemic this new type of card introduces a safer and more convenient way for users to authenticate their way of payment, because it excludes the need to touch the POS device.

    The new security chipset will be delivered by Samsung’s System LSI Business and will not use existing Mastercard hardware.

    “As consumers embrace the safety and convenience of contactless payments, Mastercard will leverage its cybersecurity and intelligence expertise and global payments network in this three-way partnership to enhance cardholder security with a biometric solution supporting fast, frictionless payment experiences that are protected at every point,” said Karthik Ramanathan, Senior Vice President, Cyber & Intelligence Solutions, Asia Pacific, Mastercard.

    In 2017 Mastercard unveiled their plans for a similar card that doesn’t require users to put their PIN in. This new endeavor uses the same concept but the sensors are now going to be produced by Samsung.

    Samsung Card is owned by Samsung Life Insurance, which is one of the biggest credit card companies in South Korea. The company will be the one releasing the product in South Korea later this year.

    Qualcomm unveils world’s biggest fingerprint sensor for smartphones

    Qualcomm was the first company to introduce an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, the 3D Sonic Sensor, the same piece of technology that’s now embedded under Samsung Galaxy S10’s stunning display.

    Fast forward one year and the US company announced an upgrade to its last year ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, the 3D Sonic Max, which promises to accurately scan a fingerprint in three dimensions.

    Unlike the first iteration that only allows users to scan one fingerprint, the 3D Sonic Max lets you scan two fingerprints at the same time. 3D Sonic Max, the latest version of Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor offers a recognition area that is 17x larger than the previous generation, allowing for increased security via simultaneous two-finger authentication, increased speed and ease of use.

    This makes the 3D Sonic Max the world’s largest fingerprint sensor and also the first in the world to enable two-finger authentication. On top of that, 3D Sonic Max promises to deliver 1::1,000,000 rather than 1::50,000, which should prevent fingerprint spoofing and inaccurate results. Qualcomm also claims that its new fingerprint sensor is faster than the previous generation, but doesn’t say by how much.

    We have yet to learn which handset makers will implement Qualcomm’s new fingerprint sensor into their phones, but it looks like Samsung might be one of its clients.

    WhatsApp close to adding fingerprint locking feature to Android app

    WhatsApp is quietly testing new ways to make its mobile app more secure. The latest addition to the Android app could be the fingerprint locking feature, which is now being tested in the beta channel.

    WhatsApp has been working on the fingerprint locking feature for quite a few months now, but the new function is not yet ready for prime time. Previously known as Authentication or Screen Lock, the new feature can be enabled from the Settings menu under the Account / Privacy tabs.

    Keep in mind though that you will still be able to reply to messages directly from notifications, as well as answer WhatsApp calls since the app will only ask you for authentication when you want to open WhatsApp.

    Fingerprint lock will also allow users to choose when they must authenticate to use the app, but they can also choose when exactly WhatsApp will automatically lock after use: immediately, after 1 minute, after 30 minutes.

    For the time being, the new feature is available only in WhatsApp for Android beta, although you need version 2.19.221 or newer to find it in the Settings menu. If everything goes well during tests, Fingerprint Lock might be deployed to all Android users in the next couple of weeks.

    The Samsung Galaxy A90 is expected to debut in early April, and with less than three weeks to go some extra information about the smartphone’s most important feature has just leaked. As confirmed earlier this week by Samsung’s own website, the Galaxy A90 will be the company’s first and only smartphone to feature a ‘notchless Infinity screen.’ Naturally, this means that there will be no controversial notch or display cutout, with the smartphone instead expected to sport slim bezels all around.

    This prediction was today backed up by a leaked Galaxy A90 screen protector which clearly shows razor-thin bezels and a slightly larger chin. To further solidify the rumors, tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer weighed in on the matter by reaffirming the lack of a notch and pointing towards bezels that are just 1.2mm thick and a chin that measures in at 3.6mm. On a related note, it’s worth pointing out that Hemmerstoffer also believes the Galaxy A90’s display will boast a huge 6.73-inch diagonal, thus putting it on par with the Galaxy S10 5G and subsequently making it one of Samsung’s biggest smartphones ever.

    Expect a pop-out camera mechanism that also rotates

    Despite the company’s efforts to develop in-screen camera technology, Samsung recently admitted that ‘perfect full-screen’ smartphones are still a few years away. Because of this, the South Korean giant has apparently opted for a more unorthodox solution on the Galaxy A90. To be precise, Samsung’s upcoming smartphone is said to include a pop-out camera mechanism which houses the selfie cameras. These sensors, however, can also be used as the rear sensors thanks to a rotating mechanism that the pop-out module includes. Details about the cameras remain quite scarce, but the general expectation is that the device will feature at least three. According to previous leaks, the primary one will sport a whopping 48-megapixel resolution. The resolution of the other sensors hasn’t yet been revealed, but one will probably sport a wide-angle lens, while the other could act as a dedicated depth sensor.

    As a result of this unique setup and the lack of rear cameras, the Galaxy A90 is also expected to sport a very minimal rear design. In fact, the only noticeable element will probably be the Samsung logo – the Galaxy A90 is expected to adopt an in-display fingerprint scanner.

    An impressive processor that could beat the Snapdragon 845

    The inside of Samsung’s upcoming device remains a bit of a mystery. One rumor claims the company is preparing a budget Snapdragon 855-powered flagship which could easily be the Galaxy A90 – the smartphone is expected to sit directly beneath the Galaxy S10e in Samsung’s lineup. However, tipster Ice Universe believes this isn’t the case. Rather than using Qualcomm’s latest flagship chip, the historically-reliable source believes Samsung’s Galaxy A90 will make use of the yet-to-be-announced Snapdragon 700-series chip currently referred to as the ‘Snapdragon 7150.’

    Little is known about this chip right now, but the expectation is that it’ll take advantage of the 8-nanometer manufacturing process. Moreover, in terms of performance, it should sit somewhere between last year’s Snapdragon 845 (10-nanometer) and the newer Snapdragon 855 (7-nanometer) found inside the Galaxy S10 series. No further details about the Galaxy A90’s internal setup were provided, but the smartphone will most likely debut with a minimum of 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. However, more impressive variants with extra storage and potentially more RAM do seem extremely likely. Completing the smartphone’s setup should be Android 9 Pie straight out of the box and a 3,700mAh battery. But considering the rumored display size, it’ll remain to be seen what kind of battery life results this produces. In any case, improved fast charging of up to 25W is now expected.

    The Xiaomi Mi A1 became almost an overnight success when it was released back in September of 2017. So much so, that Xiaomi followed it up with the Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite last summer. And now, as revealed by XDA Developers, the Chinese brand is preparing a third-generation of the lineup.

    Codenamed ‘bamboo_sprout’ and ‘cosmos_sprout’ – all Android One smartphones include the ‘sprout’ suffix in their codenames – the new devices are expected to launch later this year commercially as the Xiaomi Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite. From what can be gathered, both smartphones are currently being tested with ‘fod.’ In Xiaomi terms, this stands for an in-display fingerprint scanner, something that would probably be capture the attention of consumers.

    Nowadays, the general consensus is that traditional fingerprint scanners like the ones found on the Mi A2 series are much quicker and precise than in-screen implementations, especially optical in-display ones. But to regular consumers who don’t know too much about tech, the newer solutions are much more futuristic, hence why Xiaomi is probably looking to include them on the Mi A3 lineup.

    The specifications of these two devices remain a bit of a mystery at the moment. However, XDA Developers reports that both smartphones will come equipped with 32-megapixel selfie snappers.These will probably be contained inside small, waterdrop-like notches – almost every phone Xiaomi launches now includes this design feature.

    As for a release date, the Xiaomi Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite will probably be announced in late May or early June prior to a launch soon after. Pricing hasn’t yet been revealed.

    ABI Research predicts in a new report that fingerprint sensors in smartphones will surge to reach a 95% penetration rate of smartphone shipments by 2022.

    This will prompt new opportunities for biometric technologies, such as eye recognition, to be utilized as part of novel identification and payment applications for both the banking and governmental markets.

    “While enterprise markets aggressively adopt vein recognition technologies in physical access control applications, eye recognition technologies will soon be one of the most secure modalities for consumer electronics authentication and secure mobile payments,” ABI Research industry analyst Dimitrios Pavlakis said.

    With each passing market quarter, biometric technologies are extending their reach in consumer electronics, while OEMs in the Asia-Pacific region are aggressively driving new implementations.

    This will fuel an exponential growth in mobile banking and payment apps as banks and financial organizations prove to be less timid when embracing new biometric implementations. ABI Research finds that OEMs and service providers are now actively targeting the emerging IoT, smart home, and automotive segments as future growth areas for biometrics.

    “Vein recognition workforce management software and access control solutions in the enterprise market depict an impressive 18% five-year growth rate, boosted by market leaders like Fujitsu and Hitachi,” concludes Pavlakis.

    “Innovative startups like HYPR are making strides in improving biometric blockchain capabilities, while wearable pioneers like Nymi are triggering a domino effect with heart rate-empowered payments.”

    Japanese firm unveils fingerprint payments in Indonesia

    Japanese tech company Liquid has launched a biometric payments service in Indonesia that operates at the point of sale.

    Currently the project is being tested at an enterprise level, with the service offered to the Salim group’s workforce of around 500,000.

    “We are looking forward to developing the next generation payment and business platform in Indonesia, which will contribute to changing people’s lifestyle and have a big business impact in Indonesia,” said Yasuhiro Kuda, CEO of Tokyo-based Liquid.

    Users of the service need to register their fingerprints and deposit money in advance. They can complete payments within three seconds with the system’s fingerprint readers, which have an error rate of one in a trillion, according to Liquid.

    The company will start registering users’ fingerprints this month and start installing fingerprint readers later this year at stores run by Salim, whose businesses range from food and car sales to convenience store operations.

    Liquid is currently providing such fingerprint payment services to tens of thousands users in some cities in Japan.

    The company is aiming to expand the business in Indonesia, counting on the economic growth of the most populous country in Southeast Asia.

    Thailand’s MVNOs will need to implement a new online fingerprint ID registration system for both prepaid and postpaid mobile SIMs by March, after regulator the NBTC declined to exempt them from complying with the new registration regime.

    The online registration system is being introduced as a requirement for both mobile operators and MVNOs as part of an NBTC decision from late last year.

    But MVNOs had been calling on the regulator to exempt them from the order on the grounds that it will impose additional costs that may make it difficult for them to compete with the major operators.

    NBTC secretary general Takorn Tantasith as stating that the regulator has decided that consumer interests must be put first, and a fingerprint system will be required to ensure greater security in mobile banking as Thailand moves towards becoming a cashless society.

    He also said operators will be able to deduct the costs of implementing the system from their annual universal service obligation fee.

    The new online fingerprint ID system will complement the existing compulsory SIM registration system. While operators are required to implement access to the system, end-users will choose whether to submit their fingerprints.

    Thailand to adopt fingerprint registration for SIMs

    Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has revealed plans to require all mobile operators to introduce an online fingerprint ID system for prepaid and postpaid mobile SIM registrations.

    The regulator has given a tentative deadline of February for operators to support mandatory fingerprint ID registration.

    NBTC officials told the publication that the system is designed to ensure greater security in mobile banking and reduce the risk of fraud as Thailand continues to transition to a cashless society.

    Around 14 million of Thailand’s 103 million mobile subscribers are already using mobile banking services, according to the report.

    According to the report, while the operators will be required to implement a fingerprint registration system to complement their existing mandatory SIM registration systems, mobile customers will not be required to submit their fingerprints. The fingerprints will be stored on an NBTC database server.

    The fingerprint system was developed by the Engineering Faculty of Kasetsart University, which won a tender to supply the system for 15 million baht ($421,000).

    Operators will be able to deduct the costs of implementing the system from their annual universal service obligation fee, which amounts to around 3.5% of operators’ total revenue.

    Hitachi has developed a finger vein authentication system that does not require specialized hardware, using an ordinary smartphone camera with software processing to validate the identity of a user.

    This is the first time that such a solution has been demonstrated, Hitachi said, and the implication is that it can be used to easily the identity of returning customers for online shopping.

    The finger vein authentication system was among a host of other innovations demonstrated on the exhibition show floor of the company’s Social Innovation Forum 2016 held this week in Tokyo, Japan.

    The company aims to introduce its new finger vein authentication system for online shopping and financial transactions within a few years.

    At the moment, the system entails the use of an authentication app that takes a photo to read the vein patterns and compares it with pre-registered data. Several fingers are authenticated for greater security and higher accuracy, and by leveraging on the color recognition technology to detect the finger veins quicker, the process takes around one second.

    This makes it faster than the traditional user-ID and password systems, which forces users to remember a password. Moreover, the use of vein patterns is also considered as more secure as they are more difficult to forge or spoof compared to other biometric methods such as fingerprint, facial recognition or voiceprint.

    This is because finger veins hardly change, and are also unlikely to be counterfeit, according to company officials. This makes them perfect for integration into even lower-end smartphones without dedicated fingerprint scanners.

    Xiaomi launches smartphone with ultrasound sensor

    Chinese handset maker Xiaomi has launched a new smartphone that uses technology allowing the vendor to push the screen all the way to the top edge of the device.

    The MIX smartphone uses a technology from Elliptic Labs to replace the standard hardware proximity sensor with ultrasound software.

    The technology, named INNER BEAUTY, uses ultrasound instead of infrared to detect when a device is being held up to a user’s face and disable the screen’s touch functionality. It also allows the speaker to be completely invisible, clearing up the top area of the phone.

    According to Xiaomi, the MIX display uses 91.3% of the surface area of the front of the phone, compared to just 67.7% for the iPhone 7 Plus.

    Besides allowing for a larger screen, Elliptic Labs’ BEAUTY ultrasound proximity software has the potential to address common issues with hardware proximity sensors, such as unreliability in extreme weather conditions or in response to dark hair or skin colors.

    Eliptic Labs said OEMs will also be able to reduce costs by removing the hardware sensor in favor of a more cost-effective software solution.

    “We are thrilled to have our ultrasound proximity software featured in the new smartphone from world leader Xiaomi. Elliptic Labs is the only ultrasound proximity feature vendor designed into a tier-1 mobile handset,” Eliptic Labs CEO Laila Danielsen said.

    “This is a significant validation of our Elliptic Labs’ value proposition and we are confident this will pave the way for additional design wins for our innovative ultrasound proximity product in the coming quarters.”
