Major Store Openings in Southeast Asia

Muji, under the management of Ryohin Keikaku Co., is set to open its biggest Southeast Asian store at Central World in Bangkok on November 28. The spacious 3270 square meter store will provide customers with Muji’s complete range of products, from clothing and furniture to household items and food. Additionally, the store will stock locally developed products designed to reflect Thai lifestyles.

Muji presently operates a network of 39 stores across Thailand.

    Expansion in Vietnam

In Vietnam, Muji is refurbishing and enlarging its original store in Ho Chi Minh City to cover a sprawling area of 2990 square meters. This renovation will result in the brand’s largest store in Vietnam. The reopening of the store is scheduled for later this year, in alignment with Muji’s fifth-year anniversary in the country. Apart from its usual offering, the revamped store will also feature a wider range of locally sourced and developed products.

Muji’s expansion in Southeast Asia is a part of its overall strategy to amplify its global presence. As of August, Muji had a total of 1474 stores worldwide, which includes 717 outlets in Japan and 757 spread across various international locations.

    European Expansion

Looking beyond Asia, Muji is also reviving its European growth strategy. A flagship store is scheduled to open on Rue de Rivoli in Paris towards the end of next year.

Earlier this year, Muji also launched its largest domestic store in Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. This store is approximately 10 times larger than its previous outlets.

  • Esprit to quit Causeway Bay flagship Store

Esprit to quit Causeway Bay flagship Store

Hong Kong-listed fashion brand Esprit Holdings will not renew the lease for its flagship store in Causeway Bay, local media reports.

Expiring in June, the lease for the 7000sqft (650sqm) store in Leighton Centre has cost Esprit about HK$2 million (US$254,862) a month since 2014.

Esprit chairman Raymond Or says cost saving is not the sole reason for the move. The company also considers location and size as factors. “A large store might not bring about good results,” he told Apple Daily.

JLL national director of research Cathie Chung says Esprit may be shifting its location strategy to be more mall-focused with a smaller shop size, reports Mingtiandi. “Compared to street shops, shopping malls tend to have a more balanced trade mix and guaranteed foot traffic, so it is more likely for Esprit to enjoy spillover benefit from complementary tenants. Promotion activities by malls can also attract shoppers.”

Hysan, which owns the commercial complex where Esprit has been leasing two units, has been marketing the property to potential tenants at the same rate, reports say.

Shop rents in Causeway Bay in the past quarter have dropped 53 per cent from their peak in the fourth quarter of 2014, says Chung who describes the owners’ stance as “rather soft”, allowing for rent negotiations.

Fashion brand Twist last month leased a two-storey shop in East Point Road in Causeway Bay for 56 per cent less than the $1.1 million monthly rent the previous tenant had been paying, while Russell Street, once the most expensive retail destination in the world, has also seen rent cuts. Swatch Group last week, for example, was able to renew its lease for a street-front shop at a rate about a third lower than the $1 million a month specified when it first signed three years ago.

Meanwhile, Esprit had a net loss of $954 million in the second half of last year. CEO Jose Manuel Martinez said the results were below expectation because of weaker sales at its stores because of a drop in customer traffic.

DJI, the world leader in unmanned aerial vehicle technology, will open the doors of its Shanghai flagship store to the public on December 10, giving residents of China’s largest city the opportunity to explore the creative and professional possibilities that drone technology has brought to the world.

Located at the center of Shanghai’s busiest shopping, dining and entertainment district in Xintiandi (aka “New Heaven and Earth”), the two-story, 500-square-meters flagship store will display DJI’s full range of aerial platforms and camera products. Drone enthusiasts and novices alike can get hands-on experience with DJI’s market-leading technology, from the foldable yet powerful Mavic Pro personal drone to the latest professional products such as the Phantom 4 Pro and Inspire 2 drones.

“2016 is a milestone year for DJI as we celebrate 10 years of imagination, inspiration and innovation,” said Paul Xu, DJI Vice President. “We’ve expanded creative possibilities for professionals, and we’ve made it easier for general consumers to experience the fun and excitement of flight. Our flagship stores have become important touch points for people to discover, learn and be inspired. Our newest Shanghai flagship store will allow us to continue on this path and provide more people the opportunity to experience our aerial technology first hand.”

The Shanghai flagship store’s building retains traditional Shanghainese architectural elements, combining Western and Chinese design concepts. The outdoor cafes, art galleries and lifestyle boutiques in the surrounding Xintiandi neighborhood also create a vibrant cultural backdrop for the new flagship store.

The first floor of the DJI Shanghai flagship store will house a 20-square-meters flight cage demonstrating DJI drones in flight, which can also be seen by pedestrians outside the store. Also on the first floor is the Technical Support Center and the DJI Story Corner where visitors can see creative use cases and the evolution of the DJI Story on a curved surface projection screen. The SkyPixel Gallery on the second floor will showcase breathtaking aerial images by photographers from around the world. A dedicated space is also set aside for future customer workshops, photography seminars and special events.

The DJI Shanghai flagship store will officially open its doors to the public at 12 noon on Saturday, December 10. The first 300 customers can enjoy special discounts when purchasing selected DJI products or bundles on opening day. The first 100 visitors to the store will also receive a limited edition DJI t-shirt.

In celebration of the store opening, there will be a series of activities and programs throughout the day around the Xintiandi area. Life-size DJI Phantom and Osmo mascots will kickstart the opening celebration with a street parade, flight simulators and virtual reality goggles will be set up for people to experience the thrill of being in the pilot’s seat, and those who want to play the role of a movie director can try out the Osmo+ and Osmo Mobile handheld stabilized gimbals.

The Shanghai flagship store is DJI’s fourth foray into retail after opening its first flagship store in Shenzhen, China in December 2015, followed by the Seoul, Korea flagship store opening in March and the Hong Kong flagship store opening in September.

The DJI Shanghai flagship store is located at No. 222 Madang Road, Xintiandi, Shanghai, China. Opening hours of the store are Mon – Sun, 10 am to 10 pm. The Technical Support Center will begin operations the following Monday, December 12, and is opened Mon – Sun, 10 am to 10 pm.
