    AirAsia X chasing Europe; open to other aircraft types

    AirAsia X wants to relaunch services to Europe “as quick as possible”, and is looking at aircraft other than Airbus A330s to get there.

    Speaking to FlightGlobal,the chief executive of AirAsia X‘s core Malaysian operation, Benyamin Ismail, says that its fleet plans have changed.

    The carrier had not planned to take delivery of any aircraft in 2017, but is now speaking with “some parties to see what aircraft are available”.

    “If we can get the aircraft we need… when the A330neos arrive, the focus for them will be to grow frequencies in our current markets, like China and North Asia,”

    Earlier in the year, Benyamin said that the carrier would not re-enter the European market until it starts receiving the A330-900s from the second half of 2018 onwards.

    On the A330-900 seat configuration, AirAsia X expects to confirm the details “in the next couple of months”, but could install more business class seats on those units initially planned to take on European routes.

    “We are working with Airbus to get the assurance that the A330neos can get us direct to Europe (from Kuala Lumpur).”

    Asked whether AirAsia X might take on A350s that may be available in the short-term, Benyamin re-iterates that the carrier “is open and has various options”, but would not confirm if it has held talks with lessors.

    Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that AirAsia X has 66 A330-900 and 10 A350-900s on order. It currently operates 22 A330-300s.

    AirAsia launches daily Manila-Taipei service

    Travellers from the Philippines now have more options when flying to Taiwan after Philippines AirAsia started its daily Manila-Taipei service last Monday.

    Philippines AirAsia chief executive Captain Dexter Comendador himself piloted the Airbus A320 to mark the budget airline’s maiden voyage from Manila to Taipei.

    “Today heralds a brighter and much closer ties between two countries to improve trade and tourism,” he addressed the passengers midway through the flight.

    “We have introduced amazing connections for our guests to enjoy and we are aiming to go further across Asia by strengthening AirAsia’s presence in Taiwan,” Comendador added.

    The flight touched down at the Taoyuan International Airport after midnight to a welcome water barrage from firetrucks.

    The Taipei-Manila route was officially launched Tuesday at a press conference at the Grand Sheraton in Taipei, which was attended by Philippines AirAsia chair Maan Hontiveros and AirAsia North Asia CEO Kathleen Tan.

    A thrice-weekly Cebu-Taipei service was also announced with performances from Sinulog dancers. Taiwanese celebrity travel blogger Patty Woo also regaled guests with her beach adventures during her recent trip to Cebu.

    Starting Friday, Philippines AirAsia will begin regular flights from Cebu to Taipei on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

    Taiwanese tourist arrivals in the Philippines have reached 157,517 from January to August this year. Taiwan is currently the country’s sixth top visitor market after Korea, the United States, China, Japan and Australia.

    “Taiwan and the Philippines share a strong affinity with one another. They enjoy robust economic ties, many Filipinos live and work in Taiwan and more and more Taiwanese are visiting the many beautiful islands in the Philippines. We are honored to be able to bring the countries even closer together,” Tan said.

    PNG plans to open flight route to Papua

    Papua New Guinea has reiterated its plan to open a flight route from Mount Hagen to Jayapura during a meeting of the Border Liaison Officers held in Port Moresby, an Indonesian official said.

    Papua New Guinea will soon realize its plan but has not set a specific date for it, Director for East Asia and the Pacific at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Edy Yusuf, said on Tuesday.

    Yusuf said the Indonesian government is prepared to help realize the plan soon.

    “Indonesia is ready to help Papua New Guinea realize the plan since there is no flight from Papua to Papua New Guinea,” he added.

    The head of the Indonesian delegation to the meeting, Klemen Tinal, who is also the deputy governor of Papua, shared Yusufs view and expressed the hope that the plan would come to fruition soon.

    Most citizens of Papua New Guinea who live in Vanimo visit Indonesia by land through borders between Wutung in Papua New Guinea and Skouw in Indonesia, as well as by sea, he informed.

    If the plan to open the flight route is realized, they will no longer need to travel to Papua by land or sea, he stressed.

    Garuda Indonesia Bans Samsung Galaxy 7 Note From All Flights

    Garuda Indonesia has issued a ban on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 for all its flights starting from Monday due to safety issues.

    This move ensues the recent ban by US Department of Transportation on the device, including its recalled and replaced units, after reports of the smartphone catching fire.

    Garuda Indonesia VP corporate communications Benny S. Butarbutar said in a press release Monday that passengers in possession of a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 would not be permitted to board the aircraft. Bringing the device through carry on baggage, checked-in luggage, or cargo was also strictly prohibited.

    This is the second ban issued by the airline regarding Samsung Galaxy Note 7. In early September, it banned the use of the device during flights as well as warned passengers not to charge the battery or store the smartphone in checked baggage.

    Samsung has already been forced to recall more than 2.5 million devices due to faulty batteries. The company has instructed users to “power down and stop using the device”, and announced the permanent end of its production last week.

    Garuda Indonesia opens new flight route in E. Nusa Tenggara

    The national airline Garuda Indonesia launched a new flight route here to expand connectivity in East Indonesia, said Director of Garuda Indonesia Cargo Sigit Murhartono on Thursday.

    “The two new routes are Maumere-Denpasar, round trip, and direct flights on Kupang-Jakarta, round trip,” he said in a press statement in Kupang.

    The inauguration of the new flight path for Garuda Indonesia was conducted at the Frans Seda Airport in Maumere, Sikka District, and was attended by Sikka Regent Yoseph Ansar Rera.

    Murhartono said the new flight service to and from the NTT is part of the expansion of the flight network, which continues to be conducted by Garuda Indonesia.

    In addition, the opening of the new route is part of the continued commitment of the state-owned airline to support the programs of the Presiden Joko Widodo (Jokowi) administration.

    “We have a commitment to always support government programs to improve connectivity between the island and the city, especially in developing the tourism industry to realize the target of 272 million tourists visiting Indonesia and to make NTT Province a new tourist destination,” he noted.

    He also expected the opening of the new routes would allow Garuda to increase the flow of tourists and businesspeople between Kupang City, as the capital of the province, and Maumere, which has many tourist spots.

    Murhartono explained that the Maumere-Denpasar route will be served by Garuda Indonesia four times a week — Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday — with scheduled flights from Maumere departing at 10.55 a.m. and arriving in Denpasar at 00.55 p.m.

    Meanwhile, the Denpasar-Maumere trip will depart at 7 a.m. and will arrive in Maumere at 9 a.m. The Maumere-Denpasar round trip flight route will be served by an ATR 71-600 aircraft with a passenger capacity of 70 economy seats.

    The Kupang-Jakarta round trip flight will be served by a Bombardier CRJ 1000 NextGen aircraft, which is touted as being reliable and environmentally friendly with cost-efficient operations.

    “For the daily Kupang-Jakarta, round trip, service departure from Jakarta will be at 5 a.m., arriving in Kupang at 8.55 a.m. and then returning from Kupang at 6.55 p.m. and arriving in Jakarta at 8.10 p.m.,” he stated.

    With the opening of the new routes, Garuda Indonesia will serve up to 39 flights to and from NTT Province every week.

    East Nusa Tenggara proposes flights on Kupang-Dili-Darwin route

    The Tourism and Creative Economy Office of East Nusa Tenggara Province has suggested to the Ministry of Transportation to start the Kupang-Dili-Darwin flight route.

    “The flight route will increase the number of foreign tourist arrivals in East Nusa Tenggara and other regions in Indonesia,” Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy Office of East Nusa Tenggara Province, Marius Jelamu, stated here on Thursday.

    He noted that the Kupang-Dili-Darwin flight route is, so far, unavailable. Hence, foreign tourists keen on visiting the province have to take a flight via Jakarta or Denpasar to Komodo airport in Labuan Bajo or El Tari airport in Kupang.

    Until mid 80’s there were international commercial route between Kupang and Darwin in Australia.According to Jelamu, the flight route should be considered as the three destinations are located in proximity to each other.

    “East Nusa Tenggara shares its borders with Timor Leste, and it is close to Australia. If there is a flight connecting the three destinations located in three different countries, then the transportation and communication lanes will be smoother,” Jelamu affirmed.

    Starting a transportation lane from one country to East Nusa Tenggara would help the province boost its economic growth, especially in the tourism sector.

    “It will ease travel for the foreign tourists from Timor Leste and Australia planning to visit East Nusa Tenggara and other regions. Moreover, the visa-free policy will facilitate the flow of tourists into the province,” he stated.

    He noted that the Indonesian flight carrier Garuda Indonesia could seize this opportunity as the market will always exist.

    “The flight carrier should not harbor concerns as passengers are always available,” he added.

    Citilink to Open New Hong Kong-Manado Route

    Citilink, the low-cost arm of national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, is set to open a new route from Hong Kong to Manado in North Sulawesi in a bid to lure Chinese tourists to the archipelago.

    Citilink Indonesia commercial president director Hans Nugroho said Manado was one of Indonesia’s most popular destinations among Chinese tourists besides Bali and Raja Ampat in West Papua.

    “Manado has become famous as a diving destination. Hopefully the new route will afford foreign tourists easier access to Indonesia,” said Hans.

    Using an Airbus A320 for its maiden flight on the new route, Citilink is slated to carry 180 tourists from Hong Kong to Manado on Tuesday. Hans estimated that the carrier would be able to accommodate up to 3,000 passengers until the end of August.

    According to Tourism Ministry data, the number of foreign visitors to Indonesia reached 915,200 in May, 12.6 percent of whom came from China.

    Indonesia’s national airline, Garuda Indonesia, today launched the re-operation of a daily flight between Singapore and Medan. The flight reopening is in line with the airline’s future expansion plan, and the continuously commitment as the flag-carrier to help boost Indonesia’s economic, business, and tourism growth, as well as part of its effort to further strengthen the backbone of its connectivity in Southeast Asia region in line with the Open Sky policy.

    The relaunches ceremony was located at the Changi International Airport, and proudly unveiled by Indonesian Minister of Tourism Mr Arief Yahya, President & CEO Garuda Indonesia M. Arif Wibowo, Indonesian Ambassador for Singapore H.E. Ngurah Swanjaya, VP Airline Development Changi Airport Group Damon Wong, along with other officials of Garuda Indonesia Board of Director and Tourism Ministry of Indonesia.

    President & CEO Garuda Indonesia M. Arif Wibowo stated that aside from the airline’s expansion program, the reoperation of the flight is also a commitment to support Indonesian government program in boosting the Top 10 Priority Destinations in which one of them is Lake Toba.

    “We believe this new service will stimulate growth of business and trade in the region, more so as Medan is strategically located as the gateway to Sumatera and the rest of Indonesia’s western regions. The new service will offer passengers a wider choice of destinations as well as greater flexibility and convenience when travelling between Singapore and cities in Sumatera, such as Palembang, Banda Aceh, Sabang, Lheuksmawe, Gunung Sitoli, and Pinangsori,” he added.

    Apart from business and leisure travel, many visitors from Singapore come to Medan as the city is quite well known for its vibrant mix of cultures and reputation as a culinary paradise as well as popular tourism attractions.

    Commenting on the airline’s strategic initiative, Indonesian Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya explained that Singapore is considered as an international transportation hub, as well as the tourism hub for Indonesia. Furthermore, the Minister also promotes Lake Toba, one of the Top 10 Priority Destinations in Indonesia.

    “Toba is the largest and deepest volcanic lake in the world. Lake Toba is a giant caldera, with crater formed by the eruption of a super volcano 74,000 years ago. Experts believe that huge explosion of Toba volcano was the largest in the last 2 million years, and had triggered a dramatic volcanic storm. As an attraction, Lake Toba is a very distinctive, world-class natural landscape,” he added.

    The Medan-bound service will run daily and will be operated by Garuda’s Boeing 738 aircraft with a two-class cabin configuration featuring its globally praised Business Class service concept and the World’s Best Economy Class (Skytrax Global Airline Awards 2013).

    The service will depart from Changi Airport at 11.15am and arrive at Kualanamu International Airport at 11.45am local time. The return flights to Singapore will depart Kualanamu International Airport at 13.30pm and arrive at Changi Airport at 16.00pm local time.

    Garuda Indonesia had also launched the Wonderful Indonesia Travel Pass last January in an effort to promote Indonesia’s tourist destinations beyond its main hub, as well as to boost travel, by making travelling within Indonesia a truly affordable and seamless experience.

    The launch of this service is part of Garuda Indonesia’s 50th Anniversary in Singapore.     Citilink is set to add more flights in Holy Month Ramadan. “There will be at least 9 extra flights,” said Commerce Director of PT Citilink Indonesia, Hans Nugroho, on Thursday.

    Hans said that the flights will operate 7 days before and after Eid. The extra flights will cover routes to Padang, Yogyakarta, Medan, and Denpasar. “We will see if other routes are necessary,” he said.

    Garuda Indonesia Increases Flight Frequency in Banyuwangi

    Garuda Indonesia airlines will increase the flight frequency at Blimbingsari Airport, Banyuwangi to twice a day from May 16, 2016. The decision was made after the issuance of the permit to increase Garuda Indonesia flight services of Surabaya-Banyuwangi route and vice versa by Directorate General for Air Transport of the Transportation Ministry.

    At present, Garuda Indonesia flight schedule only serve one daily flight at Blimbingsari Airport namely Surabaya-Banyuwangi route at 11:35 a.m. – 12:35 p.m. and Banyuwangi-Surabaya at 1:05 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. After the issuance of the permit from Transport Ministry, Garuda will have an additional schedule of morning flight, namely Surabaya-Banyuwangi route at 6 a.m – 7 a.m. and Banyuwangi-Surabaya at 7:30 a.m. – 8:25 a.m.

    “We gladly welcome the additional flight schedule of Garuda morning [flight], making it two flights a day. It’s a solution to the high volume of airline passengers that often leads to complaints about the lack of seats, either to Banyuwangi or vice versa. I hope it could trigger a surge in tourist arrival,” said Banyuwangi Regent Abdullah Azwar Anas on Wednesday, May 4, 2016.

    In addition to new schedule of Surabaya-Banyuwangi route, Garuda Indonesia also plans to re-open Denpasar-Banyuwangi service. “I heard that the planned Denpasar-Banyuwangi service is ready, but we are still waiting for further confirmation about it,” Anas said.

    The number of passengers at Blimbingsari Airport continues to grow after it started operation. It has significantly increased up to 1,308 percent from only 7,826 passengers in 2011 to 110,234 passengers in 2015.

    Banyuwangi district administration has also arranged evening flights. It has prepared several infrastructures to achieve the target to start operation in 2016. “We hope that evening flights would offer a wider choice of flight schedules to Banyuwangi,” Anas said.

    AirAsia Indonesia to end Bali-Kota Kinabalu services

    AirAsia Indonesia will end its thrice weekly Bali-Kota Kinabalu services, effective June 23.

    In a statement, AirAsia Bhd chief executive officer, Aireen Omar, said this was due to the stagnant market growth and insufficient revenues to offset the costs.

    “The operational costs have also increased quite substantially for AirAsia’s operations at Terminal 1 Kota Kinabalu International Airport,” she said.

    Following the termination of the services, the low-cost carrier said it would offer three options for the affected customers.

    The passengers could reschedule their journey with the latest flight on June 21, 2016, depending the availability of seats, it said.

    “They could also opt for creditshells which can be used as payment towards any AirAsia tickets or products and they are valid for six months or 180 days from the date of issuance,” it said.

    AirAsia said it would also offer a full refund of the amount equivalent to customer’s booking.

    In a bid to strengthen its business expansion and nation branding in Europe, Garuda Indonesia today has inaugurated flight service to Heathrow Airport, London. Earlier, since September 2014, Garuda Indonesia has opened flight service to Gatwick Airport, London.

    “London Heathrow is the world’s 6th busiest airport with high passenger traffic. Garuda Indonesia’s service in the airport is expected to expand passenger connectivity in European market, particularly England, mainly through SkyTeam network to various world destinations,” said President Director of Garuda Indonesia M. Arif Wibowo in a press release as quoted by Bisnis.com, Thursday, March 31, 2016.

    Garuda Indonesia will offer flights from Jakarta to London Heathrow through Singapore (transit), whereas from London Heathrow to Jakarta, Garuda will operate five times weekly non–stop flight service (every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday), using Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with First Class service, with a capacity of 314 passengers, with 8 seats configuration for First Class, 38 seats for business class and 268 seats for economy class.

    Meanwhile, Deputy for Financial Service Business, Survey and Consulting Division of SOE Minister, Gatot Trihargo, in his speech representing Indonesia’s SEO Minister has expressed his appreciation on Garuda Indonesia’s effort who has continuously provides the best services to its users.

    Garuda to launch non-stop Heathrow-Jakarta service

    Garuda Indonesia has confirmed it’s leaving Gatwick to launch a direct service to Jakarta from Heathrow.

    From March 31, the airline will use its fleet of B777-300ERs to operate a five-times weekly service to the Indonesian capital, an increase from the three-times weekly service it operates from Gatwick.

    Flights to Jakarta will also no-longer stop at Amsterdam, creating the UK’s first non-stop flight to Indonesia.

    Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said the deal shows how important Heathrow is to British business.

    “As the UK’s only hub, Heathrow is able to support regular direct flights to 75 long haul destinations not served by any other UK airport,” said Holland-Kaye.

    “With expansion, we can bring the world to Britain’s doorstep by adding up to 40 more long haul routes to high growth markets and more than doubling the number of UK cities served.”

    Jubi Prasetyo, general manager UK & Ireland said: “Making the move to Heathrow Airport has been an ambition of ours since joining Sky Team in March 2014.

    Air India to start evening Surat-Delhi flight from Oct 1

    This year’s Diwali is set to usher in loads of surprises for the high-flying Surtis.

    Air India is preparing to introduce daily evening flight between Delhi and Surat by deploying the 168-seater Airbus-320 from October 1.

    This will be over and above the existing morning flight to Delhi. Hence, the Diamond City will have two daily flights to the national capital and same day return option will be available to business flyers at both ends. International connections to the USA, Europe and South East Asia will also be offered.

    By the end of October, Air India plans morning flight between Mumbai and Surat in its ATR aircraft.

    Thanks to the efforts of Surat and Navsari MPs — Darshana Jardosh and CR Paatil — frequent fliers from the Diamond City will get an opportunity to fly to Mumbai and Delhi after a break of more than 11 months.

    He added, “We also met Air Asia CEO Mittu Chandaliya who has agreed to introduce daily flights between Bangalore, Jaipur, Delhi and Surat this winter session.”

    Despite being the second largest city in the state, ninth in India and fourth fastest growing city in the world, Surat is very unfortunate in getting domestic as well as international air connectivity.

    Jardosh said, “We have been successful in convincing Air India authorities on introducing evening Delhi flight from Surat. We also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August and he instructed Air India CMD to take positive action. We are grateful to AirAsia CEO Chandaliya who is keen on starting flight operations from Surat.”

    Airport director Pramod Thakre said, “The DGCA will be sending the slot schedule of Air India’s evening flight to and fro from Delhi. The evening slot is open for smooth operation at the airport.”

    Garuda Indonesia trims London flights, boosts Amsterdam

    SkyTeam alliance member Garuda Indonesia will reduce its flights between Jakarta and London Gatwick in favour of additional flights to Amsterdam.

    From July 22, Garuda’s London services drop from five-times-weekly via Amsterdam to three-times-weekly, and retain the Dutch detour in each direction.

    That’s also when the airline launches its newest route, Jakarta-Singapore-Amsterdam.

    Running three days per week, this offers travellers a total of six weekly Amsterdam-bound flights – up from five at present – with the return leg from the Netherlands skipping the Singapore stopover to fly non-stop to Jakarta.

    Flight schedule: Jakarta to London, Amsterdam

    On Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, Garuda’s Jakarta-Amsterdam-London flights (GA88) depart the Indonesian capital at 11:10pm to reach Amsterdam at 8:30am the following morning. After a two-hour transit, the onward flight pushes back at 10:30am and touches down in London at 10:35am local time.

    Returning via Amsterdam on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, GA89 is wheels-up from London at 12:25pm – arriving in Amsterdam at 2:45pm, continuing the journey at 4:45pm before landing in Jakarta at 11:50am the next morning.

    Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays see the Jakarta-Singapore-Amsterdam services also flying the GA88 banner, leaving Jakarta at 8:50pm, reaching Singapore at 11:50pm, continuing the journey at 1:30am and then touching down in Amsterdam at 8:30am local time one day after initially departing.

    In reverse, the non-stop Amsterdam-Jakarta services take flight at 4:45pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays as GA89, with passengers disembarking at 11:50am the following calendar day.

    What it means for Aussie transit passengers

    Garuda flies non-stop from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth to Jakarta, with passengers able to fly onwards from there to Amsterdam and London.

    Here’s what the new flight routings and timings mean for Aussie travellers taking the Kangaroo Route or zipping to Amsterdam for business or pleasure.

    Sydney, GA713/712: Flights to Jakarta on Wednesdays come with a five hour transit time, Friday flights offer transits of just 1hr 55m, Saturdays have a 7hr 20m transit while Sunday flights don’t provide same-day connections.
