    British high-end grocery retailer Fortnum & Mason has announced the closure of its primary store and accompanying restaurant located at K11 Musea. The closure, scheduled for January 25, concludes the company’s independent operations in the city, following a six-year presence.

    The announcement, which was made through the company’s official social media channels, was met with a range of responses from devoted shoppers.

    In its official statement, Fortnum & Mason expressed deep gratitude to its customers for their unwavering support throughout the years. The company confirmed that the decision to close its K11 Musea store and restaurant was a strategic move, rather than a final farewell.

    The company further reassured customers that their iconic products would remain accessible in the city. Patrons can still purchase Fortnum & Mason’s offerings through Lane Crawford, via the Hong Kong International Airport outlet, and on their online store.

    With origins tracing back to 1707, Fortnum & Mason has long been celebrated for its premium food products, signature teas, and regal gift hampers. The brand has remained a cornerstone of British culinary and cultural traditions for over three centuries.

    The expansive 7,000 square feet K11 Musea store was Fortnum & Mason’s first foray into standalone stores beyond the United Kingdom’s borders. In addition to Hong Kong, the brand’s products can also be found in South Korea and Japan.

    Upmarket British food store Fortnum & Mason will launch its first international standalone location in Hong Kong this September.

    Driven by a strong international demand, the first Fortnum & Mason Hong Kong store will open along with a restaurant in the K11 Musea development at Victoria Dockside, serving Hong Kong residents and mainland Chinese visitors.

    The retailer runs concessions in South Korea with Shinsegae, Mitsukoshi in Japan and Lane Crawford in Hong Kong.

    “Building on our 47 years of experience in Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong, our latest expansion in Asia is an important next step for us, as we extend our reach further across the world ” said Kate Hobhouse, chairman of Fortnum & Mason.

    “We have seen significant appetite for the Fortnum’s brand and products in the region, with impressive year-on-year sales growth. We are therefore incredibly proud to continue our record of investment and growth by expanding our business into new markets, and reinforcing our support for amazing producers and suppliers  and creating new job opportunities.”

    The 7000 sqft Fortnum & Mason Hong Kong space will feature an edit of Fortnum’s most popular products, including tea, biscuits and wine, and gifts such as Champagne and teaware. A restaurant space will afford views across Victoria Harbour.

    British food is popular in Hong Kong, at one time a British colony. Marks & Spencer has a chain of food stores in the territory, operated by Al-Futtaim Group, and own-brand products from supermarket giants Tesco and Morrisons are readily available in retail stores and online.

The Fortnum’s shop and restaurant will open in September 2019.

    Fortnum & Mason Asia sales soars boosted by Hong Kong

    Fortnum & Mason Asia sales are soaring, prompting the UK luxury-food retailer to plan more stores. In Hong Kong, the chain achieved a 55 per cent increase in sales in the year to July, helping it book a sixth consecutive year of double-digit sales and profit growth. Two new stores are now trading in South Korea – in Shinsegae Gyong-Gi and Shinsegae Gangnam – and options in other Asian markets are being assessed. Another new store opened in London.

    Global sales for Fortnum & Mason grew 12 per cent, reaching £126 million (US$161 million), while profit soared 26 per cent to £9.6 million. The company is now delivering products to a record 125 markets worldwide from its online sales channels.

    Sales at its flagship store in London rose 10 per cent – during a time most department stores in the UK have been struggling to maintain sales growth and profits. Travel retail stores in Heathrow and St Pancras International train station rose 12 per cent.

    “This year has not been without its challenges, but we’re proud to report another exceptional trading period,” said Fortnum & Mason CEO Ewan Venters.
