FTX Debacle Promts Revolut to Delay its Cryptocurrency Launch

Revolut is delaying its entry into cryptocurrencies, postponing the launch of its RevCoin in the wake of the collapse of the FTX exchange.

Switzerland’s most popular neobank, Revolut, is holding back on its planned entry into minting its cryptocurrency.

We are scoping the market conditions and assessing the best time to launch RevCoin in the coming months, a spokesman for the UK’s most valuable fintech told the news outlet. Revolut initially planned to launch RevCoin towards the end of last year, but management opted for a delay as FTX imploded in November.

The project was confirmed in an interview CEO Nik Storonsky conducted with The Block in May of last year. RevCoin will run on Ethereum and work similarly to airline mileage incentive programs, with users earning rewards on how frequently they use the service.

Storonsky is an ex-Credit Suisse derivatives trader who founded Revolut in 2014. He is worth $7.1 billion, according to Forbes.

In Switzerland, the neobanks services are available via Credit Suisse.

FTX Founder Expected to Plead Not Guilty

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried is reportedly expected to enter a not-guilty plea in a scheduled US court hearing, marking the latest development in the crypto exchange’s unraveling.

A court hearing has been scheduled for FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried in the afternoon of January 3 before US district judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan. Bankman-Fried is expected to enter a not-guilty plea.

The fallen crypto exchange’s former chief executive faces two wire fraud charges and six conspiracy charges, including money laundering and compliance finance violations, which total a maximum of 115 years of imprisonment if convicted.

While Bankman-Fried has repeatedly admitted to human errors while leading FTX, he has insisted that he is not criminally liable.

Bankman-Fried faces a case strengthened in December by the guilty pleas of Alameda CEO Caroline Ellison and ex-FTX chief technology officer Gary Wang over multiple criminal charges while agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors.

Meanwhile, Bankman-Fried has been free on a $250 million bond following his extradition last month from the Bahamas, the headquarters of FTX.

Separately, legal proceedings are also underway in the Bahamas where the local government said it was temporarily holding FTX assets to deliver to customers and creditors.

Binance Launches Billion-Dollar Crypto Rescue Initiative

Binance invites participants to support the crypto industry via a rescue initiative, to which it will initially commit $1 billion.

Binance has established the Industry Recovery Initiative (IRI), which includes its own initial commitment of $1 billion, according to a blog post by the crypto giant.

The IRI is not an investment fund, Binance said, adding that it intends to increase the amount to $2 billion soon if the need arises.

The initiative is expected to last about six months with flexibility on the investment structure, be it token, fiat, equity, convertible instruments, debt, or credit lines. The committed capital must be set aside within public addresses to ensure transparency.

Aside from Binance, there are other existing IRI participants, including Jump Crypto, Polygon Ventures, Aptos Labs, Animoca Brands, GSR, Kronos, and Brooker Group which have made an initial aggregate commitment of around $50 million. 150 applications from companies seeking to provide support have also been received.

On the participation of traditional financial institutions, Binance said it was open to exploring other deal structures for those keen as such firms may be unable to send money to a public address.

On the targets for capital deployment, IRI is aiming for companies with «innovation and long-term value creation, a delineated and viable business model, and a laser focus on risk management.

Aside from funding support, we plan to provide founders and projects with comprehensive support – from formation, technical execution, fundraising, and more – so that they can emerge and grow stronger from the crypto winter, the post added.

Meanwhile, the crypto winter persists following the collapse and subsequent revelations of the fallen exchange FTX. Binance had planned initially to acquire FTX but backed out one day after signing a non-binding agreement citing concerns from due diligence and news reports.
