Italian luxury leathergoods brand Furla has reported a 38% travel-retail sales increase in H1 2016.

Furla currently has 223 travel-retail points of sales in 52 countries, the most recent openings in Bucharest Henri Coandă International airport and Singapore Changi airport terminal two with Lagardère Travel Retail.

Following record results in 2015 in terms of sales and profitability, the Furla Group overall has continued growth in the first half of 2016 registering €194m ($217m) in sales versus €151m in H1 2015, an increase of 28%.

This increase is equal to +27% at constant exchange rates and proves Furla Group’s growth is well distributed worldwide thanks to increases in sales ranging between +22% and +34% in all geographical areas where the brand is present.

The Furla Group now counts 425 mono-brand stores, up from the 415 units registered at the end of 2015. Around 50% of these mono-brand stores are composed of property and franchising points of sale.

Counting multi-brands and department stores, the Furla Group is present in more than 1,200 other locations worldwide. It is directly present in more than 100 countries with its products.

Furla Group, recently opened new mono-brand stores in locations such as Citic Mall in Shanghai, Mira Mall in Hong Kong, GUM in Moscow and in Nice. In the second semester of 2016, the Furla Group plans to open new stores in London (Brompton Road) and in Paris (Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré).

Japan remains its strongest market, representing 26% of total sales in the semester with a 30% increase just like the US. In Europe, sales excluding Italy—that alone is responsible for a 34% sales increase—have increased by 26%. Asia/Pacific sales have risen 22%, equal to almost 20% of the total sales for the Group. Like-for-like sales have also surged significantly with well-balanced results across all regions.

In 2016, Furla Group, which boasts a 1,500-strong workforce, intends to increase investments in areas that already appreciate the brand and where the Group sees even more potential: marketing, communications, digital and e-commerce markets.

Furla Group general manager Alberto Camerlengo said: “We’re extremely proud of our results for the first half of the year. The Furla Group continues to grow exponentially both geographically and across the different product categories, continuing to assert itself on a global level as one of the leading Brands in all markets.

“The quality, freshness and innovative aspects of our products are recognised all over the world and we have been able to achieve these results thanks to the commitment and dedication of our team. We will continue to work towards new growth goals, opening new distribution channels, reinforcing existing relationships and focusing on new projects for the future.”

  • Takashimaya Vietnam opens doors

    Takashimaya Vietnam opens doors

Three years after the Japanese luxury department store chain announced plans to enter Saigon, Takashimaya Vietnam opened its doors at the weekend.

As the anchor tenant of  downtown Ho Chi Minh City’s Saigon Center, Takashimaya takes up a whole five floors making it by far the nation’s largest department store – and likely its most expensive.

The first impression that the department store makes is its spacious interior. Concessions to brands have been arranged to leave unusually wide aisles – ensuring the store was comfortable even on its crowded grand opening day.

The first floor of Takashimaya houses the food maison, most of which is filled by Japanese F&B brands such as Minamoto Kitchoan, Gyumaru, Azabu Sabo, Yamazaki and Suizan. Some tea brands make their way into that space, including Vietnam’s own Phuc Long, Singapore’s TWG tea, and B Tea.

Targeting the high class consumers in Saigon and Vietnam, Takashimaya has chosen carefully the brands to appear in their stores, including luxury brands coming to Vietnam the first time, complemented by the high level of customer service Takashimaya offers elsewhere in the world.

The second floor is exclusively for ladies with international fashion names such as Banana Republic, Bebe, Bonia, Braun Buffel; footwear from Clarks, Geox, Cole Haan; bags from Carlo Rino, Cromia; and Furla with its first flagship in Vietnam after years being distributed by Ha Vang company.

The rest space is occupied by cosmetics brands, including Korean labels Skinfood, which marked the store’s opening with a special event ‘Makeup Style for Your Summer’.

“We offer free makeup and manicure for our customers for two days. Besides, when they buy our products, they will receive a gift set,” said Kieu Oanh, senior PR & marketing executive of Skinfood Vietnam.

For women, the excitement continues on the next level of Takashimaya: a heaven of luxury cosmetics, jewelleries and fragrances. Christian Dior is prominently located at the front, with rival Lancome opposite. Lancome also opened its own ‘Lancome Cafe’ – a style boutique, where women can take free makeup lessons and receive gifts for the best ‘artwork’.

Other brands include Bobbi Brown, Shiseido, Estee Lauder, Swarovski, and Mac.

The next floor features international fashion and cosmetics brands including Diane von Furstenberg, Hugo, Versace and Paul & Shark, along with restaurants and cafes. This level has a rest space with some chairs for visitors arranged around a huge grey pillar.

Local luxury multibrand retailer Runway comes back after closing its store in Vincom Center in March. As usual, it has a large space in the center, gathering all women’s favourite brands with modern and elegant designs.

The new Runway store replaces the local multi-label luxury brand’s previous space at Vincom.

Another highlight is the ready-to-launch space of women handbags Kate Spade New York. That outlet is expected to open soon.

    Coming soon: Kate Spade.

The last level of Takashimaya is filled with men’s fashion and casual wear and children’s clothing and toys. Tommy Hilfiger has the largest outlet here, opposite the first authentic Fred Perry store.

With more than 180 years of experience and US$290 million investment, it is expected that Takashimaya will not only take Vietnamese shopping to a higher level but also mark a turning point for economic development and quality retail in Vietnam.

  • Furla Shanghai flagship opens

    Furla Shanghai flagship opens

Italian leather goods brand Furla China has launched its first flagship store in Shanghai as part of a move to expand its presence on the mainland.

The new Furla Shanghai store is in Citic Square in Nanjing West Rd. As the first duplex design store on the mainland, the flagship has two levels covering 300 sqm, and features women’s and men’s leather collections and accessories, as well as items exclusive to the store.

A feature of the flagship is its 234 sqm LED facade – a first for Furla.

Founded in Bologna in 1927, Furla has a strict made-in-Italy policy for its leather goods. The company had more than 30 per cent growth and strong retail expansion across all regions last year, resulting in 339 million euros (US$377 million) in sales.

    Fulra Shanghai 2

In China, the brand has been bucking trends, growing its market sales by more than 60 per cent in the first quarter of this year.

Furla president Giovanna Furlanetto says the opening of the Citic Square flagship marks an important step in the company’s dynamic expansion strategy in China.

A highlight of the opening was the Furla “Made for You” service, with Chinese actress Jiang Shuying designing her own bag, carrying a “Made by Jiang Shuying” tag. The bag was auctioned with the proceeds going to the China Women’s Development Foundation (CWDF), which supports women’s rights and career development.

As well as Shuying, fashion bloggers Elle Lee, Liu Xiao, Peter Xu and Toni attended the opening event, which also featured the launch of Furla’s limited-edition Metropolis bag, which has the themes “Hello Shanghai”, “Love Shanghai” and “Kiss Shanghai”. It has heart-shaped patterns and comes in red, black and pink.

Furla has a presence in 100 countries with 400 single-brand shops on international shopping streets, a distribution network with more than 1000 points of sale, and growing channels in travel retail and eCommerce.

  • SSI Group profit dives

    SSI Group profit dives

SSI Group saw its profit slashed by more than half – or 54.5 per cent – to P122 million (US$2.6 million) in the first quarter, from the same period a year ago.

The Philippines’ largest specialty store retailer recorded a 7 per cent increase in revenues to P4.3 billion in the first quarter of 2016 – outperforming forecasts after the group added Mont Blanc to its brand portfolio and increased its network by 29 stores, SSI said.

“SSI posted better-than-expected sales growth during the first quarter of the year as we leveraged on the strength of our brand portfolio and our store network,” said SSI president Anthony Huang.

In the first quarter, SSI was operating 117 brands and 775 specialty stores covering more than 146,000 sqm, a 6 per cent year-on-year increase in the company’s retail footprint.

“Through the rest of the year, we will continue to focus on top line growth and on maximizing the efficiencies of our store network,” said Huang.

  • Furla Stays Focused on China Expansion While Luxury Scales Back

Furla Stays Focused on China Expansion While Luxury Scales Back

If there’s one clear example of “accessible luxury” making strides in China’s retail industry, it’s Furla. The Italian fashion house has been in the midst of a rapid evolution, going from being known globally as a playful, youthful handbag brand to capturing China’s growing middle class with a new lifestyle-centric range of products. They’re doing something right—Furla, which recently announced it will go public in 2017, posted a 126 percent global sales increase in the past five years up to 2015, the highest since its founding in 1927. Sales were up 30 percent at 339 million euros and net profit was up 41 percent last year from 2014. China sales grew 75 percent in the same five-year period, and outgoing CEO Eraldo Poletto, who will be leaving in June for Ferragamo, says he expects China to soon become Furla’s main market.

To capitalize on this opportunity, Furla has major plans for China in 2016. Currently, there are 44 Furla boutiques in 18 cities in China, including two new flagship openings in Hong Kong and Macau last year, but the focus for the next couple of years is expansion in “fast-developing” first- and second-tier cities in the mainland, such as Chengdu, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Shenyang, and Tianjin. Of particular note, the company is preparing to reveal its flagship store in Shanghai CITIC Square this month. Creating an e-commerce platform in China is another huge priority for the company before the year ends.

Still, Poletto says Furla is keeping in mind the need to remain exclusive in order to remain appealing to their customer in China. Tighter household budgets may be making affordable luxury more appealing to middle-class consumers, but according Poletto, the key to Furla’s success is more complicated than the brand’s price point.

“The definition of luxury is not to be expensive, but to be unique,” he says. “Over-expansion violates this rule, this is why many brands currently are facing difficulties and have to downsize their boutique quantity.”

Furla’s impressive performance for 2015 was also driven by the company’s new product categories, and it’s their delivery of these as part of an Italian lifestyle brand that helps them “be successful and outstanding in the worldwide downturn,” Poletto says. This year, Furla introduced a menswear collection and women’s shoes, and continued its eyewear collaboration with De Rigo. Furla is also now partnering with Ratti for textiles, and Morellato for watches, as part of a well-rounded lifestyle selection with the modern Chinese consumer in mind that “brings Furla to a new era.”

“The Chinese customer will always be our first priority in all global projects,” Poletto says. “We consider China to be the biggest market in the next five years, so what we’re doing now is finding an easier and more comfortable way for the Chinese customer to experience the typical Italian lifestyle, which is one of the most high-quality ways of life.”

Furla is also catering to the Chinese consumers’ interest in acquiring bespoke goods. It will soon be offering a made-to-order service at Shanghai CITIC Square, where customers can design their “exclusive Furla dream bag.” Already, Furla fans around the world can choose from a colorfully designed selection of leather covers to dress up their bag in tune with their personality, but now, in China, customers can also customize the stitching, edges, hardware, and custom tags on the Metropolis or the IT BAG Artesia—still at accessible price points, although this varies depending on the materials. In keeping with their Italy-focused philosophy, Chinese consumers get their bags in 12 weeks—they’re made in Italy, after all.

  • Furla prepares for IPO

    Furla prepares for IPO

Italian luxury goods brand Furla has taken its first steps towards a public share offer.

After extensive negotiations, the shareholders of Furla have reached an agreement with TIP – Tamburi Investment Partners – over the issue of a bond which will later be converted into shares in the company’s future IPO.

Giovanna Furlanetto, president of Furla says he is “very happy with the step that the company has taken, opening up to the contribution of highly-qualified and ethical professionals, in order to become stronger and more competitive globally to pursue the future growth its heritage deserves”.

Giovanni Tamburi, TIP president and CEO, said his company was proud to be linked with “one of the most prestigious Italian entrepreneurial excellences, a brand recognised worldwide, which has decided to undertake its IPO with us to further accelerate its already remarkable growth, both in terms of sales and of profitability”.

No timing has been revealed as yet for the IPO.

  • Furla to showcase FW16 collection in Singapore

Furla to showcase FW16 collection in Singapore

Italian luxury leathergoods supplier Furla will showcase its FW16 collection at the upcoming Tax Free World Association Singapore show in May.

According to the company, the new Furla bags embody the rebellious spirit, typical of the music scene, from rock to pop and influenced by a metropolitan tribal beat in its more modern interpretation.

The bags are decorated with laser cuts, which add 3D effects and create kaleidoscopic patterns, embellished with golden studs. The new Furla Loop bag, for example, has fringes emphasising movement and femininity.

Shoulder straps, the season’s protagonists, recall guitar-like straps and are enriched with details and weave effects. The leathers are smooth, supple and soft and adapt to the body. Perfectly on-trend, charms convey a personal touch to each bag, making it special for every occasion.

The colour palette is sharp and well-defined, veering from black to blues to army green with touches of deep red and metal sparkles.

The Furla Valentina and Furla Club bags are characterised by a new and colourful camouflage pattern that becomes a manifesto of the fervent cultural mixes of big cities, especially when matched to the new tribe tattoo themed straps and tags.

The Furla Metropolis bag has evolved into a “creative laboratory” where new dimensions, craftsmanship and materials are developed and enriched.

Also being shown is the new travel-retail exclusive Furla bag, a limited-edition set of three crossbody bags in Saffiano leather, each with a smaller detachable pouch inside. Available in three colour combinations: Lampone & Magnolia, Onyx & Gold, and Cobalto & Silver, each bag has an adjustable and detachable strap.

Furla global travel retail director Gerry Munday said: “Asia is extremely important to the Furla brand and accounts for 35% of our global business in travel-retail. We are seeing significant growth in all areas, with a 36% sales increase in 2015 thanks to our presence now in 48 countries with a total of 195 airport doors versus 174 in 2014. We also have some exciting projects being finalised which will be announced in due course.

“I’m confident this growth will continue as we continue to bring out collections that break the mould in terms of innovation, design and styling. The FW16 collection has already received incredible feedback and, with the addition of our latest travel-retail exclusive, we are looking forward to a very successful and productive week in Singapore this year.”

  • Furla Asia-Pacific plans more flagships

    Furla Asia-Pacific plans more flagships

Luxury Italian brand Furla is planning more flagship stores in Asia as the region delivers strong growth for the 89-year-old family-owned company.

FURLA CEO_Eraldo PolettoIn an exclusive interview with Inside Retail Asia, Furla CEO Eraldo Poletto explains how the company has bucked the decline in luxury spending in core markets like Hong Kong and Singapore during the past year. Furla achieved 53 per cent growth in total sales (in euro at the current exchange rate) in Asia-Pacific, where it counts 14 markets – Australia, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, The Philippines and Vietnam. Japan, a stand-alone territory in Furla’s accounts, saw sales grow 24 per cent.

Even discounting sales from new stores, like-for-like growth for Furla Asia-Pacific reached 15.5 per cent last year, yet the region accounts for just 19 per cent of the company’s sales – about €64.4 million ($72.1 million) – suggesting strong growth potential ahead.

“The consistent strategy we have implemented over the past four years – positioning ourselves as the only Italian and ‘Made-in-Italy’ brand in the premium segment, without accepting compromises in terms of quality – is paying off,” says Poletto.

“We are expanding our footprint with important flagships: Singapore Marina Bay Sands opened in September; Hong Kong Miramall and Shanghai Citic, each with a 300 sqm street facade, opened in December with a luxury retail concept showcasing our full ladies’ and men’s collections.”

Furla China Flagship Store @ Shanghai Citic Square 4

He says more flagships will open this year in Australia and Bangkok.

“Flagships are meant to represent every aspect of the brand in terms of image and product range; however, we are not expecting to open more than five or six flagships in the region, as we are focusing on the profitability of our retail network, and prefer to penetrate the market extensively.”

In what he terms a “capillary” approach, more standard-sized stores and points of sale will also open across the region.

Furla China Flagship Store @ Shanghai Citic Square 7

For the past two years the company has opened or renovated one store a week. It now has 172 points of sale in Asia-Pacific, along with 72 monobrand stores in Japan.

“In terms of our retail format, our average store size is increasing together with Furla’s total-look collections. Malls and high-street locations complement each other, and in this period of time, rent levels in some markets have decreased substantially because of a drop in demand from luxury, watch and jewellery brands. We are always on the lookout for new opportunities to invest in,” says Poletto.

“Our retail store concept is also quite special, as it wants to deliver a 360-degree luxury shopping experience while maintaining our the value-for-money approach.”

Furla China Flagship Store @ Shanghai Citic Square 2

Asians appear to be embracing Furla’s distinctive quality brand feel and shopping experience. Perhaps surprisingly, the brand has no strategy of differentiating its Asia-Pacific product range from those of other markets.

“We believe that if a product captures customers’ hearts in one market, its appeal is universal. Our price and product range have always been appealing to a large spectrum of clientele; it is not by chance that our two best-seller styles – Metropolis and Artesia – represent the most affordable and the highest offer of our collection respectively.

Furla China Flagship Store @ Shanghai Citic Square 6

“In terms of branding, strong marketing investments – like our collaboration with Mario Testino and a more aggressive digital and outdoor media planning strategy – are making Furla far more visible.”

Department stores are still an integral part of the Furla sales strategy, especially in China, where that sector is still in its infancy by western standards.

“The department store culture in Greater China isn’t very strong yet, and there are very few players compared to the shopping mall retail model in western markets. There is most surely room for improvement in this region.

Furla China Flagship Store @ Shanghai Citic Square

“The situation is much more developed in Singapore and Australia, and obviously a priority in Korea with Shinsegae, Hyundai and Lotte, where we are present with 10 domestic stores and an aggressive development plan.”

Furla is also experiencing strong growth in the travel retail sector, which is helping both top-line sales and brand awareness.

“Travel retail will continue to fuel the growth in APAC,” says Poletto. “Total sales generated by the travel retail channel were up 27 per cent for 2015, and we opened five new locations. We see blooming opportunities in this channel as Asian customers shop worldwide while they travel: it is a great showcase for the brand.”

In June, Furla will open a directly managed boutique in Hong Kong International Airport.

Furla China Flagship Store @ Shanghai Citic Square 8

    Southeast Asian focus

Furla’s strong growth in the region is coming not just from the established markets of Hong Kong, Singapore and Greater China.

“We have witnessed a significant double-digit growth in Southeast Asia markets including Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, The Philippines and Vietnam,” says Poletto.

“In Indonesia, a fast-growing country with a population of 250 million, we have a capillary quality presence with 10 boutiques in five cities. As of today, Furla has 46 stores in Southeast Asia, and we will focus on strengthening our foothold in these markets this year.”

Furla China Flagship Store @ Shanghai Citic Square 5

In India, which Furla has entered in a joint venture with Genesis Luxury, the label has three boutiques – one each in Mumbai, Delhi and Calcutta.

“They are all performing very well with a 50 per cent sales growth increase in 2015,” says Poletto. But the market has considerable challenges.

“India is a market with very high potential, but also with a huge limits when it comes to infrastructures. There are not enough qualitative shopping malls to cover Indian clients’ high demand for fashion and luxury: this is why Indian consumers represent a key nationality in markets like Dubai, London or Singapore.

“In terms of expansion, we will tap into all the new relevant real-estate projects.”

Globally, Furla has 415 monobrand stores, of which 190 are directly owned and 198 franchised. It has 27 travel retail stores and more than 1200 outlets in department stores and multibrand outlets.

Furla China Flagship Store @ Shanghai Citic Square 10

Results released today show that Furla’s global turnover reached €339 million last year, up 30 per cent on 2014. The growth was driven across all Furla product categories, including the new men’s collection, women’s footwear collection and eyewear.

Poletto says that being a family-owned business – an increasingly rare phenomenon in the model luxury retail business – has its advantages.

“Being 89 years old gives us a great DNA to be around into the future: the real assets are the brand and its heritage, which are translated into equity. The Furlanetto family has very strong values – they have a long-term vision, instead of making opportunistic choices.”

Arcadia Malaysia partner rules out expansion

Wing Tai, the corporate retailer which partners with Uniqlo and a raft of other brands, including the Arcadia Malaysia stores, says it is streamlining its retail business.

The listed company has 85 retail stores in Malaysia’s major cities under 12 international brands – Topshop, Topman, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Warehouse, Karen Millen, Pumpkin Patch, Wallies, BCBG, Ben Sherman, Burton and Furla. It also has a 45 per cent stake in the joint venture with Japan’s Fast Retailing, operating 25 Uniqlo stores.

Wing Tai GM of finance Lee Kong Beng says while the Uniqlo store network, targeting the value driven fast fashion customers, will expand into suburban markets, the Arcadia brands like Topshop and Topman have reached their limits in Malaysia.

“We will not expand (the Arcadia brands),” he told a press briefing this week.

He said while there were no current plans to close Arcadia stores, if any store failed to generate positive cashflow or profit it would be cut.

“For retail, we’d just consolidate because it’s challenging. So no point being a hero, where you open outlets and the sale is not there.”

Lee said the company was finding the current retail market in Malaysia challenging following the introduction of GST on April 1, which consumers are slowly adjusting to.

An influx of tourists was bolstering the group’s earnings, with spending holding up in stores in high profile shopping malls.

“We expect retail sales to pick up because of the weakening of the ringgit, so it’s cheaper to shop in Malaysia rather than in Singapore. It’s a matter of time people get used to GST. We see that (retail sales) are more stabilised now,” Lee said.
