    Vietnam has most adult gamers globally

    Vietnam has the highest number of adult gamers in the world in 2020, according to a recently released global consumer survey by German data portal Statista.

    Ninety four percent of Vietnamese said they gamed at least occasionally while nearly 20 percent said they were frequent gamers, according to the Statista Global Consumer Survey.

    Eighty five percent said they gamed on smartphones.

    Besides Vietnam, other developing countries like Nigeria, Thailand and the Philippines also reported high numbers of adult gamers, aided by their younger demographics.

    Smartphone gaming has won over people not previously invested in the activity by giving them easy access at low or no initial cost.

    The Statista Global Consumer Survey polled 1,000-4,000 respondents between 18 and 64 years of age in 55 countries and territories.

    Vietnam is a growing market for e-sport and online games. An earlier Statista report said online game revenues in the country this year are expected to top $10.1 million, up 16 percent from 2019.

    Another study by market research company Niko Partners and Google earlier this year forecast Vietnam’s e-sport market to achieve the highest five-year compounded annual growth rate in Southeast Asia, from 2018, of 28 percent.

    Globe opens its first Esports Center

    The Philippines’ Globe Telecom has announced the launch of its first Esports Center, aimed at supporting various local esports communities.

    The Esports Center at Play Nation in the UP Town Center in Quezon City will offer various initiatives including esports competitions, as well as support helping gamers create live streaming content and interact with other members of different esports communities.

    Globe SVP and head of content business group Nikko Acosta said the facility will help Globe’s Games and Esports division achieve one of its key goals of strengthening support for esports in the Philippines in cooperation with various fan communities.

    “We want to bring together different communities of popular games like Arena of Valor, Rules of Survival, League of Legends, and Tekken – among others – in one venue to upgrade their knowledge and gauge their skill levels with others through peer learning of new strategies and techniques,” he said.

    “We are positioning esports as a real sport, to make a gamer into a real athlete harnessing both physical and mental attributes by playing it right,” Acosta added, mentioning the company’s #PlayItRight advocacy campaign, which seeks to emphasize the importance of discipline, nutrition, physical wellness, and cognitive development in esports.

    Singtel launches ultra-fast broadband for gamers

    Singtel has launched a new ultra-fast fiber broadband service targeted at gamers, which comes bundled with a dedicated gaming Wi-Fi modem.

    The new 1+1 Gbps Fibre Pro Gamer Bundle comes with the newly launched Razer Sila gaming router and a subscription to the WTFast Gamer Private Network service, which is designed to automatically connect gamers to the fastest servers.

    The bundle is priced at S$69.60 ($50.41) on a 24-month contract, and connects to a dual network which comprises 1Gbps of dedicated bandwidth for gaming and another 1Gbps for regular internet usage.

    The dedicated bundle is being launched today at the opening day of Singtel’s first PVP Esports Championship in Suntec City, a three day event featuring teams from Australia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand competing for a $300,000 prize pool.

    “We are pleased to offer our customers this broadband bundle that’s specially designed for online gaming during our inaugural PVP Esports Championship event,” Singtel CEO consumer Singapore and group chief digital officer Yuen Kuan Moon said.

    “Online gaming is extremely popular with our customers. This requires high connectivity performance and specialized devices to optimize the gaming experience. By bringing together Singtel’s superior network connectivity and Razer’s Sila gaming router, we believe the 1+1 Gbps Fibre Pro Gamer Bundle will provide the ultimate performance for gamers.”

  • PlayStation 4 Pro is now officially available in Malaysia

    PlayStation 4 Pro is now officially available in Malaysia

    Malaysian gamers and fans, you can finally head out and purchase the Sony PlayStation 4 Pro now as it’s been officially released in the country according to an announcement that was made via the official Playstation Asia Facebook page.

    We reported on the announcement of the PlayStation 4 Pro previously, and it was scheduled for an initial release in certain markets on 10 November. Although the retail price for most countries, including Malaysia was revealed (RM1799), an actual release date was not confirmed.

    It seems now that fans in Malaysia won’t have an agonisingly long wait to get their hands on the new console as Malaysia is also releasing the console today (10 November 2016).

    According to the Sony Playstation Asia Facebook page, you can head to Sony Centres around the country to get the console. There are limited units available at the moment and according to the Facebook page, customers are advised to contact the Sony Centres to confirm availability of stock.     As for customers who have pre-ordered the Sony PlayStation 4 Pro beforehand, you should be getting your units pretty soon as well. We managed to get in touch with Sony and they said that pre-order batches are expected to reach retailers today (10 November 2016).

    We, however, could not ascertain which particular retailers these were and whether they included online e-commerce sites like Lazada, 11thStreet and GemFive. It has been advised that customers who made their orders via those channels to check with the sites themselves for confirmation.

    Do tell us if you managed to get your pre-ordered PlayStation 4 Pro or purchase it at an authorised retailer. We’re guessing there are pretty limited stocks available for Malaysia so although it may be officially released here, there might be a bit of a wait till customers will actually be able to get their hands on one. We’re currently reaching out to Sony on the stock availability and restocking schedule, so stay tuned!
